I got the chance to borrow an '06 Passat with the new 280hp V6 for a couple of days and have a few comments about it..... I really like the new Passat...! The car I'm driving has an MSRP of $36,400 and is the V6 with leather, navigation, 6-speed auto, and the DynAudio sound system. This is one hell of a classy feeling and driving car. When taken in isolation, it feels worth every bit of its $36K price tag. On the other hand, there's lots to choose from out there in that price range. The car handles better than the old Passat and has a firmer feel to the chassis and suspension. The car looks good on the bigger 17-inch wheels and tires. T…

November 28, 2005 First Drive: 2007 Bugatti Veyron Review and photos by Michael La Fave Canadian Driver For 47 years, Bugatti built race, touring and luxury cars that were, and still are, thought by many to be the finest automobiles of their time. Ettore Bugatti's company went bankrupt in 1956 less than a decade after his death, but not before producing almost 8000 automobiles – some with impressive race provenance. Almost 35 years later, the company re-surfaced under Romano Artioli, a wealthy Italian car distributor who had acquired the rights to Bugatti's famous name, and the hallowed marque set out once again to build the most amazing cars in the world. …

Drove through the VW dealer lot today by the mall. Was there literally two days ago, I swore I did not see the new 011 Jettas! After seeing an ad in the paper saying as much, and checking online inventory, indeed they had 2011 Jettas! A slew of them. I drove right by them the other day and did not notice, but went there again today, and yes they do exist!. HMMMMMM.....how's that for a first impression. ANYWAYS this is like one of those unboxing a cell phone videos. There is not much meat other than just a first sort of thought on the presentation. So I did not get to sit inside one. But here goes.... exterior. BLAND, however......tidy. Balanced, inoffensive, …

I loved driving my VWs... but every one of them had a problem... or three or four. '92 Golf was built with inadequate water shielding for the drive belts... recalled to install a splash shield that should have been an elementary part of development testing. And the clutch linkage fell apart in a parking lot far from home. I think I used a paper clip to refasten it until I could get to the dealer. First '98 Beetle had loud squeaky brakes, and this was at a time when EVERYBODY turned their head to look at it... I used to coast as slow as I could before pressing the pedal to avoid turning ppl's smiles into quizzical stares. Second '98 Beetle overheated the first weekend…

Audi A1: Audi Bringing a Mini-killer? We found some sources saying that Audi will bring a Mini killer in 2010 which will be the official successor of the Audi A2, but now called Audi A1. The current issue of German "Autobild" has this story as a main topic including the first pics ever. Being currently in Japan we couldn't get our hands on a copy of it, so we had to rely on some pics from an AutoWeek forum. Make your own mind if it looks reliable. To be honest, we don't hope and think so. Stay tuned for more news! The Audi A1 is said to arrive with 3 doors, 4 seats, in compact size and with the new twincharger engines. Diesel engines will also be available. It seems …

Audi Bringing Back The Allroad? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 23, 2011 The original Audi Allroad was an Audi A6 Avant with higher ground clearance and a version of Audi’s Quattro system with low range. Audi sold the Allroad in the US between 2001 and 2005 and hasn’t sold one since. But Audi is planning to bring back the Allroad to the U.S., albeit a smaller size. Car & Driver has been told by Audi, they’re bringing the A4 Allroad. The A4 Allroad will have unique bumpers and lower-body cladding, which will be available unpainted or in body or contrast colors. Engine in the A4 Allroad was rumored to be the 2.0T producing…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 1, 2013 At the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, Audi announced they would be offering four models with the option of a diesel engine. The first of those four, the 2014 Audi A8L TDI will be the first to arrive in the U.S. in the spring and have a base price of $83,395 (includes $895 for destination). The A8L TDI comes with a 3.0L TDI V6, producing 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive is standard. Even with the extra weight of TDI being in the long-wheel base model only, Audi says the A8L TDI can reach 60 in 6.4 seconds and gets 24 city/36 highway/28 combined MPG. Sou…

Audi announced this afternoon that the 3.0L TDI V6 did have a defeat device that allowed the engine to circumvent U.S. clean air laws. In a statement, the German automaker said that it failed to disclose three emission control software functions, also known as auxiliary emissions control devices (AECD) to the various agencies as required by law. One of devices, a 'temperature conditioning of the exhaust‑gas cleaning system' was deemed to be illegal by the EPA as it could detect when it was being tested for emissions and turn on the pollution-control equipment to cut emission levels down. Audi also announced the plan to fix the vehicles that will involve a software…

Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of Audi's r&d has stepped down today. Hackenberg has been a key presence at Audi and the Volkswagen group since he joined in 1985. He has played a major role in a number of projects including the first-generation Audi TT, Volkswagen XL1, and the MQB modular platform. In 2013, he was named the head of Audi's r&d division. Hackenberg made headlines back in September as he and two other r&d heads at Volkswagen - Porsche's Wolfgang Hatz and Volkswagen's Heinz-Jakob Neusser - were suspended for possible involvement in the diesel scandal. “In the 30 years that he was active in the Volkswagen Group, Ulrich Hackenberg was involv…

Audi appears to have a hit on their hands with the new A3. Bloomberg reports that in the first three months of sale, the A3 has outsold the Mercedes-Benz CLA by a rate of 2 to 1. In June, Audi move 2,452 A3s, while Mercedes-Benz moved only 1,658 CLAs. Year-to-date sales, the CLA holds an 2,841 unit advantage over the A3, mostly due to model going on sale a bit earlier than the A3. “CLA was the only game in town for a while, and now there’s something to compare it to. If you read some of the comparison tests, the A3 is coming out on top by a long stretch,” said Michelle Krebs, an analyst at AutoTrader.com. So why is the A3 doing much better than the CLA? Some of it migh…

With tougher CAFE standards looming, Audi has got a range of new diesel and hybrid models coming to the US. Next year, Audi has the Q5 crossover and A8 sedan coming with a diesel. However, Audi has put the A6 diesel and Hybrid versions of the A6 and A8 on delay. In the case of the Hybrids, Audi’s US President, Johann De Nysschen told Ward’s Auto that the pushing back the A6 and A8 Hybrids was largely done to “minimize complexity” in the lineup, since there is a Q5 Hybrid coming next year. As for the A6 diesel, no official reason was given. But given the mid-size premium sedan segment in the US is sluggish and most of Audi’s sales gains (14.1% so far in 2011) have been …

Audi seems to be impressed with the BMW X6 that they are working on their own competitor. Volkswagen Group design chief Walter de’ Silva told Automotive News Europe that the company has signed off on Audi’s X6 rival, dubbed the Q6 by the media. “We will definitely launch a sportier crossover in between the Q7 and Q5,” de’ Silva said. De' Silva also said that Audi is still deciding whether to add a smaller SUV, likely named the Q4, to fit between the Q5 and Q3. The Q4 would compete with the upcoming BMW X4, which was confirmed by BMW’s CEO Norbert Reithofer, to come out in 2014. Source: Automotive News Europe (Subscription Required) View full article

Audi can now use Q2 and Q4 for future models thanks a new deal with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler tells Autoblog that the German automaker has done a trademark swap to get their hands on Q2 and Q4. It is unknown what FCA got out of the deal. "We tried to get it years ago and they said 'No, never,' but there is never 'never' in business. ... This year I went back to them with a proposal and we talked and there were some negotiations and then we agreed to it," said Stadler. Q2 was used by FCA to denote vehicles equipped with a limited-slip differential (mostly used on Alfa Romeo vehicles). Q4 denoted vehicles with all-wheel drive (used on Al…

Audi has some very ambitious plans in the coming years. It's planning eleven new models and has set a new global sales goal of two million vehicles in the next few years. How will Audi pay this off? Well by investing more money. According to Bloomberg, Audi has increased its investment by 500 million euros to 22 billion euros ($30.3 billion US). Seventy percent of the investment will go towards development of new vehicles and technologies. “We are now decisively steering toward our next milestone. Audi believes that the future of the brand will rest on electric vehicles. In fact, the German automaker wants to have 25 percent of vehicles sold to be electric. Now this goal is way down the line, but Audi is beginning to make this a reality with a number of electric vehicles going into development. They are also tackling how they will sell them. A recent piece in the New York Times said that dealerships were a stumbling block when selling electric vehicles either because they didn't know anything about them or pushed buyers into buying a gas-powered vehicle. Tesla is the only automaker that no problem with selling their models, but that is due to their decision of …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 7, 2013 It has been about two years since Audi announced that the Q3 Crossover would be coming to the U.S. Since that time, no word has come out of Audi HQ about when the Q3 would be arriving on our shores. We have a answer and a possible timeframe. According to Car and Driver, Audi is planning to launch the Q3 in the U.S. within the next eighteen to twenty-four months. The reason is due to the way the U.S. classifies vehicles. Audi wants the Q3 to be classified as a 'light truck', however it doesn't meet certain criteria such as the vehicle's approach angle. Audi will be addressing this with a mid-cycle refresh.…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 26, 2012 Audi has given their midsize crossover, the Q5, a mid-cycle refresh. Not that you actually can tell on the outside or the inside. Both got subtle styling changes and updates. The big news on the Q5 refresh is what lies under the hood. The only engine sticking around is the base 2.0T with 225 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. Everything else is all new. Replacing the 3.2L V6 is Audi's supercharged 3.0T (don't ask why they didn't use an S instead of a T) producing 272 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Also, coming is a 3.0L diesel churning out 245 hp and a eye-watering 428 lb-ft of torque and a Hybrid model that pai…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 30, 2012 Audi has a bit of a problem on their hands. The German automaker is in the middle of launching new hybrid vehicles, the technology loved by Americans - but is also introducing a range of diesel powered vehicles, which are actually more efficient. Rather than begin changing the mind of American buyers that diesels make more sense than hybrids, Audi is changing course and altering their green plans; making hybrids the green option and diesel the performance option. The move has caused Audi to make decisions on models will and will not come to the U.S.. For example, Audi has shelved the 2.0L diesel opt…

Meet the fifth-generation Audi A4 sedan and Avant. The new A4 follows the same formula as previous models: grow in size, add more features, improve performance, and cut weight. Although there is one element missing from this formula - make it look slightly different than the model it replaces. There are small changes to the A4 such as new headlights and larger grille found on the new Q7. But you have to look very closely to notice the changes, since it almost looks like the A4 it will replace. At least Audi has cut a fair chunk of weight out of the new A4 - 264 pounds to be exact (mostly dependent on engine and trim). Also Audi has worked on improving the A4's aero. T…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 6, 2012 Before we get started, I want to clear up a couple of items: Yes, it’s a real car. Yes, you could buy this one of a kind Lamborghini, but you can’t since it has been sold for a cool 2.1 million Euros (about $2.8 million). The Aventador J follows a pretty simple recipe, remove excess weight to go fast. That includes the climate control, navigation, roof, and windshield. Lamborghini says this is to make the Aventador J feel like a two-seat sport bike. Continuing the weight loss, Lamborghini uses more Carbon fiber through out the Aventador J - the bumpers, front air scoop with winglets, and a huge rear di…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 12, 2013 Audi's current diesel offerings stand at two with the A3 hatchback and Q7 crossover. That will be increasing to six with the A8 TDI coming in the spring and the Q5, A6, and A7 TDIs arriving in the fall. Tonight in Ingolstadt, Audi revealed the new 2017 A5 and S5 coupes. You might look and wonder what's different about the new model compared to old - it looks the same. We can't fault you for thinking that. The only real change that most people will be able to pick out is the slightly wider grille up front. Audi has improved the overall aerodynamics with a class-leading 0.25 drag coefficient. At least the interior does reveal some significant changes. Much like the A4, the A5 gets a new dash design with minimal clutter and an 8.3-inch screen. Audi's 12.3-inch virtual cockpit system is available. The A5 will also be the first Audi model to feature the automaker's connec…

Audi had one more surprise up their sleeve this week. Today, the German automaker announced the SQ7. Positioned as the high-performance model, the SQ7 uses a 4.0L turbodiesel V8 with 435 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. This bests much of the competition when equipped with a diesel engine. But that high torque figure isn't the big story, it is how the SQ7 produces all of that power. The 4.0L V8 uses two conventional, sequential turbochargers and an electric compressor - a first in a production model. The electric compressor sits in the air path downstream of the intercooler, near the engine. Since it uses electric power to generate boost pressure (not exhaust …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 25, 2012 Last year at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi pulled the covers off an A3 Sedan concept, complete with an 408 HP five-cylinder engine. Well, Audi is putting forth an A3 Sedan for the U.S. minus the 408 HP engine. Renderings from Road & Track show the A3 carrying a family resemblance to other Audis, with a large front grill, flared out fenders, and sculpted sides. The A3 Sedan will be about six inches longer than the current A3 five-door. Power will come from 2.0L four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. Hybrid and electric models are expected. Base A3s will come with FWD and a six-speed manual, while qua…

The diesel emission scandal has caused Audi to change up their development cycle. A source tells Car and Driver that Audi has sped up the development cycle for e-tron quattro and h-tron quattro models. The board has allegedly diverted engineering and financial resources toward these models and put all non-essential projects on the back burner. “Everybody is of course concerned about the aftereffects of the diesel crisis, and the thinking is that Audi has to show people we are serious about these kinds of cars,” said the source. “Every kind of thinking has changed since the diesel problems. We are pushing to bring zero-emission cars to market as fast as we can now—…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 5, 2012 Audi appears to be looking back at the first-generation TT model for the next-generation TT. Sources tell Autocar that the design of the next-generation TT will take design elements from the first-gen and current TT to help bring back the distinctiveness and impact that first-gen TT had. The next-generation TT will utilize Volkswagen's MQB platform and will have a similar overall size to the current TT but with a wider track. There is also talk of using more aluminum in the TT's structure to help reduce more weight. The next TT will arrive first as a coupe sometime in 2014, with a convertible following …

We know that Audi is going mad with crossovers considering the U.S. lineup has three at the moment and more are on the way (smaller and bigger crossovers, along with coupe-design models). Car Magazine has learned about one that will fit into the TT lineup. Back at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, Audi revealed the TT offroad concept which featured a noticeable amount of design cues from the current TT such as flared wheel arches and the distinctive roofline. Car Magazine reports that this concept will go into production sometime in 2017 wearing the TTQ nameplate. Originally, the plan was for the TTQ to wear the Q4 nameplate to keep everything simple. But Audi ran into troubl…

Rumors have been flying around for a couple of years of Audi doing an RS3 sedan for North America. But there hasn't been any concrete evidence for it, just hints and speculation. Continuing this trend, Quattro World has learned from sources that the RS3 sedan is a go. Audi of America executives told employees at a recent summit that the RS3 sedan has been given the green light. Sources say the model will look slightly different from the current RS3 Sportback sold in Europe with new front end and headlights. A new turbocharged 2.5L five-cylinder with over 400 horsepower will be paired with a seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive. The RS3 sedan is…

The concept marked the 30th anniversary of the original quattro being introduced. Talk of a production model came and gone, leaving us wondering if there was the chance of a quattro rebirth ever happening. A new report from Autoweek says it could happen. Sources tell the magazine that Audi is preparing a new quattro concept that could be shown as soon as the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Audi is in the process introducing the next-generation V8 that will be used in their models, along with Bentley and Porsche. We've already gotten a glimpse of the diesel version that powers the SQ7 and before too long, we might see the gas version. But Autocar reports that this V8 could be Audi's last. A source tells the British publication that the German automaker is moving a fair amount of their investments over to electric and hybrid vehicle development. This change would likely mean there isn't enough money to develop another V8 engine in the future. “By 2025, the plan of Audi management is to have between 25% and 35% of Audi’s output as battery-electric vehi…

This crossover will be following in the footsteps of the Range Rover Evoque or Audi's Stepenwolf concept, having a rakish and sporting look. This has not been a good week for Audi in terms of leaks. Earlier this week, we reported on a video that showed Audi introducing the RS3 sedan to employees. Now a product roadmap has come to light showing what's in store for next two years. Dutch site Autobahn.eu got their hands on a picture showing the timeline for Audi products in 2017 and 2018. Let's start with 2017. The roadmap shows the RS3 sedan, the Q7 e-tron (a plug-in hybrid that will either come with a gas or diesel engine), and the SQ7 (performance version much like the SQ5 that could offer a tweaked supercharged V6 or a V8). We also spy the A5 and S5 coming in 2017 - makes sense as the new A4 has been laun…

Car and Driver is reporting that the next-generation Audi RS4 will retire the naturally-aspirated 4.2L V8 engine and use a turbocharged V6 engine. This is due to the upcoming emission regulations coming soon to Europe which are very stringent. That doesn’t mean Audi is hard at work with the next generation TT. Autocar has learned some interesting information dealing with the next generation model. Audi officials say the goal of the next TT is to be “more driver orientated” than the current model. Audi’s plan to reach this goal factors on many things. Michael Jost strategy chief for VW has stated that in some markets already ICE is starting to fad and by 2026 as more EVs enter the market place, the transition will be underway. VW will continue to modify and tweak as needed for markets where there is insufficient charging infrastructure which will carry this last power train line past 2050. Hi guys, I drive a Volkswagen Golf 2001 (bought it refurbished in 2007). When I got it it didn't come with car mats, I got such a good deal on the car that I decided to splurge and bought some legit car mats from the dealership. Several years down the road they're getting a bit raggedy and I want to replace them with some good quality all-weather ones. Where have you guys gotten your car mats from/what are some brands I should stay away from? I'm willing to spend the money on quality ones as long they last and come with attachments so I can install them securely.
