Hargrove: Up to 100,000 Canadian workers could be idled by UAW strike 1 minute ago | Link to Original Article @ The Canadian Press TORONTO - Tens of thousands of workers at General Motors of Canada and in the Canadian auto parts industry are being immediately hit by the impact of the strike against GM in the United States, Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove said Monday. "It's not inconceivable that by the end of this week we could have anywhere between 80,000 and 100,000 people unemployed - mostly in Ontario, some in Quebec - as a result of the dispute," Hargrove said. The walkout by 73,000 United Auto Workers members, with the UAW saying talks were hung u…

Like stickers, GM's rebates dip as new pricing strategies take hold By JOHN K. TEAHEN JR. | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/07/06, 9:23 am et DETROIT -- Cutting sticker prices seems to be doing the job that General Motors assigned to it: enabling the automaker to scale back its huge rebates on cars and light trucks. We don't mean the first attempt at lower stickers, which GM installed last fall. Those stickers showed minimal reductions from 2005 prices, and they followed a summer of employee pricing, with its heavy discounts. The pricing strategy fell on its face then, and GM stopped talking about it. But the company decided to give it another ch…

UAW says two locals vote down GM contract Fri Oct 5, 2007 4:17 PM ET By Jui Chakravorty DETROIT, Oct 5 (Reuters) - A United Auto Workers union local in Romulus, Michigan, is the second to reject General Motors Corp's <GM.N> tentative labor contract with the union, the local's president said on Friday. Members of local 163 voted down the contract on Friday despite the automaker's promise to keep work at the plant. Local President Larry Long said he was unsure why more than 50 percent of the voters were against the deal. Union members at UAW Local 465, which represents the engine factory in Massena, New York, also voted down the contract on Friday, local Pre…

General Motors is rethinking its approach in the automotive marketplace. A number of conflicting issues (auto sales growth are slowing, stricter standards for emissions and safety; autonomous vehicles, changes in how vehicles are owned, and trying to return more cash to stockholders) have the company making some drastic changes in an effort to cut captial spending. Speaking with Reuters, a number of GM executives said they are undertaking the most extensive overhaul of its vehicle development process in many years. The end goal is to design their global lineup with a few building blocks and spreading the costs of engineering and research over many more vehicles. Also,…

[source: Left Lane News] GM to Issue Additional Shares to Pay Off Debt A filing with United States securities regulators has revealed that General Motors will issue up to 60 billion additional shares in an attempt to pay of government, bondholder and union debts. The plans would essentially wipe out the holdings of its remaining shareholders - and since the United States government will become the majority shareholder, only the Treasury's approval would be necessary. Analysts have long predicted that GM shares will be essentially worthless regardless of how the automaker restructures; this massive, unusual issuance of stock would furthe…

Well if you thought September was bad... October is only getting worse... Sales are never gonna see 2004's totals... What kind of incentives would it take to get customers to flock in... 0% intrest? 10 year warrantys? 5-10k$ off of every vehcile? what will it take to get some vehicles off the dealership... the customers are used to it... they will expect nothing less... so why stop incentivies? if GM offered a 10 year bumper to bumper & 10 year powertrain... wouldnt that set the bar and let people know GM is a serious contender? no incentives would be needed... then GM would know exactly what problems their products face so they could fix them... that…

Among General Motor's restructuring and cost slashing activities of 2018, GM was apparently in talks to sell their headquarters in Detroit. GM bought the Renaissance Center in 1996 for $70 million and has made substantial renovations over the years. The RenCen, as it is also known, was originally built by Ford in 1971 who later sold it in the 1980s. The potential buyer was billionaire Dan Gilbert. Talks fell through rather early because the aging structure requires expensive upgrades to its heating and air conditioning systems along with other renovations. There does not appear to be another buyer in talks with GM at this time. News of the potential sale fol…

Plans announced last year to move 2,000 General Motors jobs from Wilmington, Del., to Bowling Green appear to be on hold, United Auto Workers Local 2164 President Eldon Renaud said yesterday. "The future does not look good for that right now," Renaud said in an interview of the plan to add the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky to the Corvette factory by 2012. "The talk we are hearing is those vehicles will not be built here." Renaud's comments came as GM announced plans to shave 10,000 from its global white collar staff of 73,000. What's the best selling full-size pickup truck in North America? Ford's F-150, of course! Well, maybe not. While widely reputed as not only the best selling pickup truck but also the best selling vehicle in both Canada and the U.S., Ford sells fewer F-150s than rival General Motors sells of its half-ton contender. Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 3, 2008 - 11:32 am ET DETROIT - General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner says the automaker expects overall U.S. auto sales to hold roughly flat in 2008 with the depressed levels of 2007 even as global sales hit a new high. "There are some obvious reasons for concern, but on balance I suspect '08 will be similar to '07 in total, although likely weaker in the first half and stronger in the second," Wagoner wrote in response to a question on his outlook for U.S. vehicle sales. He added: "In the U.S., we expect (overall sales in the) low 16 millions, but some risk given the economic background." Wagoner addressed reporters in an onl…

JASON STEIN | Automotive News Posted Date: 8/22/05 http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=103024 General Motors has promised to run product development globally in the past. This time it's actually happening. After several false starts, GM is assigning global programs to different vehicle development centers around the world. The automaker now has globalized engineering, design, information systems and manufacturing, with global operating and capital budgets. For instance, engineering work on the next generation of vehicles on the mid-sized, front-wheel-drive Epsilon architecture -- including the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 -- now is led by GM'…

General Motors today announced another set of recalls that covers over 500,000 vehicles, The first and largest recall is for the Chevrolet Camaro from the 2010-2014 model year due to the key fob being accidentally hit by a driver's knee and causing the key to move out of the move position. GM says this isn't a problem with the ignition switch, but with the key fob itself. GM also said that it is aware of three accidents where the key fob was the problem. A total of 511,508 Camaros worldwide will get a separate ignition key and fob to fix this problem. Dealers have been told to stop selling Camaros for the timebeing. Congress is about to approve a loan that is nothing more than a firebreak, it does not extinguish the fire. The loan will give us the time we need as a nation to wet down the roof and call in the water bombers, but the fire still burns and the smoke and embers are still falling all around us. The good news is, that the situation has spurred a great flood of creative thinking (even amongst the small minds in DC). Ideas with real merit are floating through the air like snowflakes in a blizzard, from how to finance the balance of the loans our domestics will require, to the (overdue) notion that the US needs to adopt a rational industrial policy to avoid crises like the o…

The Asian markets are open now and are taking a beating with the Nikkei index has falling 6%. It is likely that the US markets will see a significant drop in early trading when it opens in 10 hours. This news may have a dramatic effect on holiday shopping as Americans pull back or cancel their Christmas spending. That could cause further economic problems for retailers that have already struggled in a soft retail market. Normally many companies file for bankruptcy in the beginning of the new year, after a failed holiday season. That number cund rise consideribly. I was watching the news this morning on CNN and just before a commercial break, I caught the clip about the new side-impact crash ratings. Chevy Impala is number 1 followed by the Toyota Camry (or fat Mazda 6, if you so desire). I think that this is good news, considering the car comes standard with side-impact airbags, meanwhile some of its other competitors don't. I'm also surprised to see that someone else hasn't already posted something about it on here. Guess I get to be the one to spill the beans! Yay for me!!!

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 8, 2013 Forbes had the chance to talk with General Motors' North American president Mark Reuss this week. Reuss talked about key gaps that he sees in GM's lineup and what could be done to fill them. We'll start with the Chevrolet Cruze. Since going on sale in the U.S., a lot of us have been wondering why there isn't a hatchback version. Especially considering the number of compact hatchbacks that are on sale has been growing and that Chevrolet sells a Cruze hatchback in Europe. Reuss said “That was a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake.” Even without the hatchback, the Cruze has been doing quite well, with 211,862 …

NEW YORK — General Motors late Friday gave in to mounting pressure from suicide prevention and mental health groups and agreed to revise its "suicidal robot" advertisement that triggered criticism after it aired during last Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast. The automaker has not yet confirmed how it will change the ad, but the ending, where the despondent robot jumps off of a bridge is expected to be revised. In the spot, a quality-obsessed robot makes a mistake and is thrown out of a GM plant. After a series of demeaning jobs, the robot commits suicide, only to wake up and realize it was just a dream. GM was displaying a blue Opel Zafira hydrogen fuel cell technology. Comments follow downgrade sending ratings deeper into junk territory NEW YORK - A bankruptcy by General Motors Corp. is not "far-fetched" if present trends at the company persist, Standard & Poor's said Monday, shortly after cutting world's largest automaker's ratings deeper into junk territory. The downgrade and S&P's comments initially sent GM shares and bonds lower as investors fretted about the rising risk that the company will have trouble repaying its debt. "In the past, we might have felt at different points that the concerns about bankruptcy risk were way overplayed," said Scott Sprinzen, speaking on a conferenc…

GM HOLDEN may have to increase and extend dramatically its US export program after parent company General Motors put all its US rear-wheel drive programs on hold in the face of proposed stiffer fuel economy standards. At first glance, the new standards will make it harder for GM to produce rear-wheel drive cars in the US, especially the high-performance V8 models. But GM will have the option of building the cars outside the US because the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards apply to imported cars and domestically built cars separately. GM imports most of its small cars and makes the majority of its larger cars in the US and Canada. Should GM decide not to m…

As we reported back in July, Akerson created a group to study Tesla and how it could effect the company. Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said escalating costs would mean more industry alliances and mergers but declined to say if the world's largest automaker would bid for rival DaimlerChrysler's struggling Chrysler Group. Wagoner said the costs of developing the next generation of automobiles, especially the replacement for the traditional internal combustion engine, meant that the industry would be driven toward deeper collaboration. Standing under a fading blue sign that says BIRTHPLACE OF THE AMERICAN V6, Allan Taylor gestures at the factory behind him and grimaces. "Everything in there is obsolete," he says of the Buick engine plant. Taylor has spent 30 years there, and at 59 he's nearing retirement. It's a good thing too, since the plant won't be running much longer. General Motors plans to shut it down in 2008, one of nine factories the company aims to close, eliminating 30,000 jobs. Taylor is surprised the plant has lasted this long. "We have to put buckets under the machines to catch the leaking oil," he says. Buick City, where he works, was once a vast manufactu…

General Motors Corp. on Monday approved a production cut at its Pontiac Assembly Center, a move that could result in as many as 500 layoffs at the factory that builds heavy-duty pickups. With sales of its big trucks hurting in a sluggish market, GM will produce nearly 20 percent fewer pickups in two shifts at the plant. Company officials are determining how many jobs will be eliminated as part of the change. Sources had said the plan is to cut about 100 full-time workers and nearly 400 temporary employees in September. GM is still working to reach a final number, officials said on Monday. "It's still a matter of discussion," GM spokesman Tom Wickham said. GM's redesig…

This is opinion but it mirrors my sentiments about GM, the UAW, DPH, etc... Strike? Consumers Couldn't Care Less By Warren Brown Sunday, April 9, 2006; Page G02 At last word, negotiators for the bankrupt Delphi Corp. and the United Auto Workers were at loggerheads. Delphi, once one of the world's greatest automotive parts suppliers, last week petitioned the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York for release from its labor agreements with the UAW and other unions. The petition, part of a larger plan to restructure Delphi into a smaller, more efficient company, also asks that Delphi be allowed to alter certain contracts between itself and its large…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 27, 2012 In the past few generation of its full-size SUVs, General Motors used pretty much the same interior design across all brands. That looks to be changing with the next-generation SUVs. “In the past we shared SUV and (pickup) truck interiors. That is not the case going forward,” said Chris Hilts, creative manager of interior design at General Motors to Car and Driver. Hilts cites two reasons for this change. One is that SUV owners want more refinement in their vehicles. Pickup owners want something a bit different. “We went to a lot of clinics. What we learned is that truck customers like their interior …

Lack of '05 inventory expected to take toll on GM sales By Greg Migliore Automotive News / August 25, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=13151 DETROIT -- A summer of offering employee discounts to the public has cleared out plenty of 2005 models for the Big 3 -- a fact that will likely dent General Motors' sales for August, analysts say. Analysts expect Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group to post sales gains for August, as both automakers kept their employee discount programs for a second month. But August was the third month of the sales program for GM, which the automaker applied to most of its 2005 models. And with the number of &#…

WHISPERS: Will the Russians Ditch General Motors? Date posted: 02-03-2006 TOGLIATTI, Russia — Russian automaker Avtovaz, which is now controlled by Moscow, said it will build a new factory near its existing facility here on the Volga River and is reviewing its joint venture with General Motors. Known outside Russia for its clunky Fiat-based Ladas, the company has been in the process of updating its model range for more than a decade while struggling with chronic cash-flow problems. Avtovaz had a dream of cracking the U.S. market back in the 1970s but never got any closer than Canada. The automaker builds more than 700,000 cars a year and is far and away Russia's larg…

General Motors is building as many Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups as they can, but they are still not able to keep up with the demand. Currently, there is a 41 day supply of Colorados and 58 day supply of Canyons in dealers or being sent out. Part of the problem of not meeting demand is the Wentzville, MO is working at full tilt producing as many midsize trucks, along with full-size commercial vans. But GM has a possible solution to increasing production of their midsize trucks; outsource some of the van production. In a statement released on Friday, GM and Navistar, Inc announced a new partnership where Navistar would build the cutaway version of the Chevr…

I just received an e-mail from Bausch and Lomb. If you've been following the news, you'll probably know that Bausch and Lomb sells a contact-lens solution called "Renu MoistureLoc". This product has been possibly linked to a rare eye infection (Fusarium keratitis) - which has caused them to recall (and stop producing) the product. Why is this interesting on a car forum? Their CEO is Ronald L. Zarrella. Here's his message in case you are interested: http://www.bausch.com/us/vision/about/news..._15_recall.html

The dire situation in which the U.S. auto industry finds itself has created a lot of national discussion, but for many the consequences are much more personal. It's one thing to see a panel of experts discuss the ramifications of bailing out an ailing auto industry on a cable news shows, but as we see in this video after the jump, it's something altogether different when you're the mayor of a town caught in the crossfire. Virg Bernero is the mayor of Lansing, MI and it's quite apparent that he's not content to let pundits shape the discussion about who needs to sacrifice more to save the auto industry. The Fox News anchor conducting the interview can't do much in the face…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 5, 2013 Some surprising news coming from General Motors today. The Detroit Free Press reports that Cadillac's vice president of global strategic development, Don Butler resigned his post today. In a email, Butler explained that his departure is “a personal decision.” “As I've told others, I just need to take a step back to recalibrate, reassess my priorities. I know it’s time for a change but I don't know what’s next. I'm trusting that God will provide,” Butler went onto to say. Butler's exit comes at at an inopportune time for GM as it tries to capitalize on the recent success of Cadillac in the U.S. by expandin…

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 26, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors is considering diesel engines as an option on some models of its next-generation SUVs, GM's top truck executive says. Gary White, GM vice president and vehicle line executive for full-sized trucks, says GM is mulling alternative fuels for SUVs built on its GMT 900 architecture due next year. "Diesels certainly would be considered a viable option sometime during the life cycle of this truck," White says. "We've got some pretty aggressive emission standards coming, and when you move those into the SUV category, the emissions are even more stringent. We've got…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 30, 2013 General Motors is hoping to reverse a trend of losing market share by introducing new models over the next few years. Since 2002, GM has seen its market share decline at a steady rate, losing 10.5% in that time. This is due to competitors such as Chrysler and Japanese automakers roaring back in sales. GM believes a onslaught of new products can help them claw back some market share. The Detroit News reports that 70% of GM's product portfolio will be refreshed by the end of this year. That will climb to 89% by 2016. "The oldest car will be the (Chevrolet) Cruze and the (Buick) Verano, very shortly. So …

Jeff Plungis / Detroit News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. last year recalled 1.35 million trucks and SUVs in 20 states and Washington, D.C., to clean brake sensors that could malfunction and cause accidents. Can Jerry York Save GM? Ace cost-cutter ratchets up pressure for major changes Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- In the 1980s, it was a feisty Texan named Ross Perot who rattled the board of General Motors Corp. by calling his fellow directors "pet rocks" in the pocket of management. A decade later, retired Procter & Gamble Co. Chairman John Smale led a board-room coup that toppled a GM chairman and set a new standard for corporate governance. But no outsider ever joined the GM board with the expectations attached to Jerry York. The appointment to the board last week of York, the ace cost-cutter employed by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, is a pivot…

Word is that G. Richard Wagoner will be a guest today at 10:30AM on "Face the Nation". Our failed CEO has been making the rounds of newspapers, radio, and television at a frantic pace. Mr. Steve Harris, the PR director brought back to save the day, has pulled out all stops in a desparate effort to build goodwill, and offset the stampede of calls for his boss to resign, or be fired. In my opinion, General Motors would be far better served if "Red Ink Rick" were instead simply made to "Face the Music"!

No, this certainly isn't another "Red-Ink" Rick diatribe. Buickman has done enough of those. Instead, some praise of Rick Wagoner from Peter DeLorenzo, for things Wagoner is doing right. Let's make sure that, in the midst of daily challenges to GM and the American auto industry, including the latest proposal from Jerry York, we don't forget the things which are right about GM. It is excerpted from the autoextremist.com website: " . . . I have to give Rick his due, he is focused on engineering a turnaround in the 'right' way - and I see real, demonstrative progress. When I say the 'right' way, I mean that Rick Wagoner has always tried to take into account the constit…

Back in early May, we reported that electric truck maker Workhorse was in talks with General Motors to buy the shuttered Lordstown Assembly plant that formerly built the Chevrolet Cruze. The plan seemed founded more on hopes and dreams rather than actual financial reality. Workhorse's only model, the W-15 is a truck with an 80 mile range and a built in range extender, has not exactly been climbing the sales charts. In fact, the company booked only $6,000 in sales in the 2nd quarter of 2019, roughly $70 per day. Following that report, the company's stock plunged 35%. Deliveries of the truck are currently on hold and will resume in the 4th quarter this year. There is c…
