I got this book last week and have read some jumping around in it but still have some chapters to go. As with his two first books he is pretty straight forward and honest with his feelings and calls here. Like stated it is not a hatchet job as he tells the good and bad on each just as he as done on himself in past books. I would recommend this book as it gives some in site not seen with some of the auto company players and the games played behind closed doors. It is a good reminder that things are not so cut and dry or as simple as we like to think here on the web. Personalities play a big roll in management and some of these folks hide it well or you just never see wha…

GM strike costing 760 vehicles per hour Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:59pm EDT | Link to Original Article @ Reuters DETROIT (Reuters) - The strike at General Motors Corp. will cause U.S. production losses of 760 vehicles per hour and could shut the automaker's facilities in Canada and Mexico within three days, a leading industry analyst said on Monday. Michael Robinet, an auto industry analyst with CSM Worldwide, said the United Auto Workers strike called Monday could have a cascading effect on GM production elsewhere. Initially, the shutdown of GM's U.S. plants will cost the automaker production of 12,200 vehicles per day, he said. If the strike continues for more than 36 hou…

TORONTO — Premier Dalton McGuinty says Ontario will continue to offer incentives to the auto sector despite the controversy surrounding the planned shutdown of a General Motors of Canada Ltd. truck plant in Oshawa, Ont. The move by GM, which will affect about 2,600 jobs when it closes next year, will not deter his Liberal government from providing other loans to secure investment, Mr. McGuinty said Wednesday as debate over the closure continued to rage. Nor, he said, would his government think twice about making other loans on the generous terms as the one extended to GM. “It's not something we pull out of the air,” he said. “It's based on what the competition's doi…

Starting Tuesday 8-29 through Labor Day, cars get $500, $1,000 on P/Us and Full Size Suvs, and $1,500 on Mid Size SUVs. GM just doesn't get it. They let the month slip away, then blast the market with overkill and meanwhile ruin the Holidays once again for those in retail. We'll go nuts for a few days and then return to the excitement of funeral procession. How will people feel who purchase this weekend only to discover they got screwed for want of a couple days. Once again I'll profess that until GM changes their marketing once and for all, the decades of decline will continue, Wagoner will continue to chop and cut, and GM will be extremely lucky to stay in business desp…

Dear T Charlieville, You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs. Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid. The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of …

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com GM was in the press earlier this year when it offered to help recover and restore the corvettes from the corvette museum that got damaged in the sinkhole. GM stepped up again when VP Mark Ruess happened to be listening to a radio show on WJR on Wednesday. The show talked about how police researching a phoney VIN led authorities back to the original owner. 71 year-old owner, George Talley got a call telling him his vette was in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Odometer showed 47,000 miles and was in good condition. The retiree who had worked at GM's Milford Proving Grounds had no idea of ho…

Course they also talk about the rest of the chevy family but some interesting marketing on their top 3 auto's that fleets should be buying.

OPG plug-in car site featuring the Volt Got a heads-up email about this today as a contractor for Ontario Power Generation. Seems like maybe somebody else was listening to me rant these past few years about early adoption of plug in cars fuelling increased electricity production. Alright, maybe not... but it's at least nice to see other people think these things as well. Notice that the video shows Malibus as the stand-in for Volts, I guess they're hoping people won't catch that? ...or implying that the Malibu may be plug-in in the future?

Automotive News Charles Child 7-12-06 It's clear that Kirk Kerkorian will not let up on Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors. Kerkorian's implied threat to replace Wagoner with Carlos Ghosn is just a start. Kerkorian, the crazy-like-a-fox billionaire from Las Vegas, will keep prodding Wagoner to perform. But I have a plan that might keep Kerkorian at arm's length. OK, Wagoner is not Ghosn. But there's no reason why he can't act like the celebrated CEO of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. Ghosn stood tall at Nissan by spelling out specific sales and financial goals after he took command of the troubled Japanese automaker in 1999. Under his first three-year pro…

GM raises its prices to help offset costs Automaker increases stickers on about a third of its vehicles to cope with costlier raw materials. Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News Link to Original Article @ DetNews General Motors Corp. raised prices an average of 0.5 percent on about one-third of its vehicles this week to help cope with the soaring cost of raw materials, a company official said Wednesday. Prices rose from $60 to $425 a vehicle on 35 percent of GMs cars and trucks, GM spokesman John McDonald said. Most increases were from $90 to $140, he said. car connection "A new report from Merrill Lynch suggests that GM has been investing too little in new products for a long time and it isn't clear that even in the present crisis, the auto giant is prepared to change. "We believe GM will continue its historical pattern of underinvesting in product to the detriment of earnings and stock price," noted a new research report from John Murphy, Merrill Lynch's new auto analyst. "GM's market share losses are not new news. The company's consistent underinvestment is the primary driver of its consistent market share losses," the report says."

Bloomberg is reporting that Delta Americas has a three year project with GM to develop GM's new fast charging system. This would recharge a battery with 180 miles in less than 10 min or 360 miles in less than 20 minutes. This is a quicker recharge than Tesla's own Supercharging system. With GM having 20 electric vehicles on sale by 2023, GM is wanting to be on top of the go to for best recharge rate. Currently Tesla is 6 min of charging time per mile, Porsche has committed to 12.4 miles per min of recharge as has BMW and Mercedes-Benz. GM has committed to 18 miles per min minimum of recharge time. Per GM, customers have stated very clearly that recharging of an electric a…

Pearl Harbor remains a useful analogy given Admiral Isokoru Yamamoto's statement on December 7, 1941 - "I fear we have woken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve." Heres an old article, 2001 July... hrmm wanted to take this thread to another level, but... I really find it strange that all I seem to hear regaurding GM is that its waking up, that the General is finally starting to wake up. GM is learning Product matters. GM is asking for input on what direction their vehicles should take, I.E. front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive. Ever heard the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child?" Something similar could be said about the automotive industry, except the village is an assorted and wide-ranging group of auto suppliers and the child is your next new car. Currently, the major automakers only deal directly with Tier 1 suppliers, the big companies that assemble major automotive components into large modules. These modules are created using parts from Tier 2, Tier 3 or even smaller suppliers, and these companies are generally paid by their larger Tier 1 siblings. General Motors has just announced a new provision that would have the automaker making payments to smaller Tier 2 suppliers. The wo…

Here are some notes of what I found at the auto show this year. the Cadillac line was placed in and with Benz, BMW, Porsche and Audi. It was removed from all the other GM products. T The ATS and XTC were generating a lot of interest at the display. The Buick display was near empty less for the Encore. The Encore had many older buyers looking. As for the Encore it was the first time I was in it. It is a very nice car if you do not want a large ready cargo area. you can configure it to carry things but you had best be alone. It has a similar feel inside of my HHR less the cargo area and the much better interior. The GMC display was busy with the Acadia. They did have a…

Wall Street Journal GM Plants to Close Much of Summer General Motors Corp. plans to idle most its plants for about two months this summer as the company races to cut costs and production to keep pace with sinking demand, said a person familiar with the plan. The car maker typically closes its plants for a two-week summer vacation. A GM spokeswoman declined to confirm or deny the planned closure. Such a production hiatus -- one of GM's longest in recent decades -- promises to drain the company's revenue stream, dealing another blow to its attempt to restructure operations. GM's sales have tumbled in recent months, with declines topping 50%…

Rumors of tomorrow's "important changes" at GM have approached a fevered pace, but the latest one we've heard is coming directly from someone who's directly related to someone who could be directly affected if the rumor is true. So, it must be true, right? Hit the jump for the full rumor. "My uncle works on the Volt as an engineer. He's getting laid off Friday because apparantly the project (aka VOLT) is on hold indefinitely." DETROIT -- General Motors' U.S. market share fell below 20 percent for the first time as the impact of $4 gasoline knocked the Detroit 3 into a minority share of the U.S. market in May. The 44.4 percent share not only was the worst-ever showing for GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, but it was also less than 2 percentage points ahead of the Japanese brands. Led by Honda, Japanese brands gained 5.7 percentage points to finish May with a 42.5 percent share of light vehicles. The Detroit 3 lost 7.4 points. Also in May, GM's U.S. market share fell below 20 percent for the first time since the automaker was formed in 1908. Excluding Saab, GM sold 268,892 vehicles, down 2…

General Motors softened its demands on its surviving dealers last week. The dealers, for example, won the right to meet with a GM representative next year to discuss sales objectives. And the company promises to negotiate reasonable sales improvement goals. GM is walking a tightrope as it tries to work out of U.S. Bankruptcy Court. To shed thousands of dealerships, it is using tough tactics that are angering many dealers. But GM needs dedicated and enthusiastic dealers to boost sales and work out of its deep financial hole. Ahead of releasing this month's sales numbers, General Motors has announced that it will start reporting sales quarterly instead of monthly. “Thirty days is not enough time to separate real sales trends from short-term fluctuations in a very dynamic, highly competitive market. Reporting sales quarterly better aligns with our business, and the quality of information will make it easier to see how the business is performing,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations in a statement this morning. GM cites many reasons for the change to quarterly reporting - weather, product launches, number of selling days, incentives, and seasonal factors. “It’s no…

News Isuzu CEO says North American operations nearing a 'major turning point' JAMES B. TREECE | Automotive News Posted Date: 11/23/05 TOKYO -- Isuzu Motors Ltd.'s profits are down, but CEO Yoshinori Ida isn't worried. He says the decline is part of his plan to refocus the company on the more profitable parts of its business. For example, Isuzu's North American revenue shrank 31 percent in the fiscal first half, which ended Sept. 30, to $604.1 million, the company reported last week. That was mostly because Isuzu stopped selling SUVs. But operating profit there surged two and a half times, to 3.74 billion yen, or $33.1 million at current ex…

Tom Walsh: You know GM's back in black when... When will we know that General Motors Corp. has fully emerged from its 30-year funk? This question arises as GM Chairman Rick Wagoner, Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and other GM brass begin walking and talking with a touch of swagger now that they've run off pesky billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, who cashed out his 10% GM stake, and brushed off SuperCEO Carlos Ghosn of Renault and Nissan in his bid to lure GM into a super-synergistic-sucker's auto alliance. Things are indeed looking up for GM, but remember, this is still a company only 11 months removed from a $10.6-billion loss in 2006. So how can we tell when GM has really turned th…

We know GM is developing diesels for the US. My question is how are these going to be released? Will they be launched just in new models and MCEs, or will they be made available for all models that can take them ASAP? The reason I am asking this is that my ideal vehicle would be an SRX, and I am wondering the probability that GM would release a diesel version of it as the engine becomes available, especially since its future is in doubt. I want to be green as well as plan for the future (diesel engines can switch to biodiesel fuel with no problem, whereas a gasoline engine making a fuel switch needs modifications).

Richard Truett Automotive News November 22, 2008 - 12:23 am ET General Motors directors are considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the Wall Street Journal and Detroit television stations reported. The Journal attributed the information to people familiar with outside board members' thinking. The paper said such a move would put directors at odds with CEO Rick Wagoner, who has main…

Neither company commented when asked. Reuters has learned from one of their sources that the two companies has discussed "selling Opel to Peugeot, buying Peugeot's automotive business or putting them all together in a new entity." Reuters Story By Jui Chakravorty DETROIT, June 23 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. <GM.N> plans to offer zero-percent financing on most of its 2006 models and financing as low as 2.9 percent on its 2007 line of sport utility vehicles, a GM dealer said on Friday. GM declined to comment, but the company, which typically briefs key dealers on its sales strategy in advance of any announcement, scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to …

The Envoy/TB/Ascender thread inspired me to look at the US Isuzu web page. I can't believe how much cheaper the Isuzu versions are from their GM counterparts. 5-passenger Ascender: $20,459 5-passenger Trailblazer: $27,410 7-passenger Ascender: $22,498 7-passenger Trailblazer: $29,030 i-280 ext. cab: $14,239 4-cyl Colorado ext. cab: $18,365 The only one on the Isuzu site that seems expensive in comparison, very close to the comparable Chevy, is the i-350 crew cab, at $24,608. That is some CRAZY undercutting on the TB though - can't believe they are still floundering.

SOMERSET, Pa. – The head of the nation's largest automaker took perhaps the most important car ride of his life Wednesday, traveling 500 miles, mostly over highway through four states, to Washington, D.C., where he will ask Congress for a second time to save his slumping company. Two weeks ago Rick Wagoner flew to Washington on a corporate jet. This time the chief executive of General Motors Corp. made the trip in one of his company's black hybrid Chevrolet Malibu, driving part of the way. He periodically made calls on his cell phone while in the passenger seat and wore sunglasses to protect from the glare of a sunny day. Wagoner will be back in the spotlight Thursday…
