* Since late April when we first learned my sister is pregnant with their 2nd child, my nephew has been adamant that he is having a little sister. When asked if a baby brother was OK, he simply replied, "I'm having a little sister!" Last week, my nephew's wishes were confirmed ... my little sister is having a girl! My niece should arrive in late November. My nephew is THRILLED! Being an uncle the last 3+ years has been awesome. I originally honed my "corrupting skills" for friends' kids, but I've perfected them with my nephew. When I was in the hospital last week, he brought the "Monte Carlo" bear (that I bought him) to help me get out of the hospital quicker.... …

Ok so here's the deal, my Graphic Design 3's latest class project is to make an 17"x22" poster relating to a social issue we feel strongly about. Mine deals with import bias...I want to make something along the line of "Rethink American" It has to be able to push that idea without making it look like I'm trying to sell a car...any ideas? Note: professor drives a Toyota so it's gotta be good! :AH-HA_wink:

Hey Guys, I am new to this forum and throught I would try to contribute. If anyone is looking for reapir manuals, owner manuals or service manuals for virtually any type of car, there is a FREE ebook at the address below. I asked him could I download and share it, but he said he prefers to have people come to the website. The site itself isn't the best, Sometimes there are annoying ads and surveys. The ebook is only a couple of pages, but it gives a list of places online where you can find almost any service and repair manuals, even for very old models and trucks. I would highly recommend to download it and keep it on your computer. Website - http://ebook-files.info…

Well, it's time to roll up the sleeves, scout out the few places I've identified I would live and go look for a job (since I finished this night time degree just before the summer). Monday, I leave for Atlanta and Florida via plane. If I get the vibe and it's a go, I was thinking of taking my car down first (since that's the diciest) and then move myself down and job hunt (can't do that from Portland). Ok, so, what about the car...my Regal 3800 coupe some of you like to rag on? At 238,000 miles, I'm thinking of bringing her, or actually, having her cart my ass down to Atlanta. New stuff (within the last year to 6 months): all brakes, all tires, all struts, spark plug…

LOS ANGELES – Jewelry from two entire lines being sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide, including bracelets and necklaces branded by Miley Cyrus, contains high levels of the toxic metal cadmium, according to an Associated Press investigation. Testing of 61 samples purchased by AP reporters across the country from a Cyrus line and from a series of make-it-yourself metal bracelet charms indicated that 59 of the pieces contained at least 5 percent cadmium by weight, with 53 of those measuring 10 percent or higher. And the world's largest retailer knows the items are tainted. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. received test results in February showing cadmium in these jewelry l…

Casey Mears won NASCAR's longest race, the Coca-Cola 600, last night using fuel milage to beat out the top contenders. A long green flag run at the end of the race saw the expected front runners have to pit for fuel while Mears stayed out and held on over the final 8 laps to win. This race marks Chevy's 11th win out of the 12 races so far. Casey Mears' car owner Rick Hendrick has seen his teams win 9 of those. Now all four of Hendrick Motorsports teams have a victory this year. Stephen Downer Automotive News September 14, 2007 - 3:01 pm EST MEXICO CITY — It may take until Tuesday, Sept. 18, for six auto assembly plants in Mexico to resume production. The plants suspended operations as a result of bomb attacks Monday, Sept. 10, on energy pipelines in southern Mexico. Natural gas supplies should resume gradually between Sunday night, Sept. 16, and early Monday. Martha Avelar, a spokeswoman for Mexican energy monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, told Automotive News today. Normal supplies probably will be restored by midday or late afternoon Tuesday, she added. If service is restored Monday, it would likely take until Tuesday’s fir…

So the other day I'm at home in the moring getting my day started, I've got several hours of painfully dull work ahead of me and in the mean time a client needs a delivery to western Mass. Since I'm busy and Marcia was going to visit her Friend Audrey anyway (who lives close by to the drop off point) she runs out wiht the Datsun and leaves me and at home to take care of myself and the baby... both sick with a bad cough, runny nose and worst of all a nasty sore throat. Several hours go by and I'm statring to get pissed. I call her on the cell phone and I'm like WTF? Where are you? This isn't a vacation I need you back here so I can concentrate on …

The Patels in the US, Hari and Sarla, aka Harry and Sally, were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Harry kissed Sally goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.' Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...' 'Oh, no need to explain,' Sally cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.' 'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?' 'Well that's what Harry and I had hop…

As much as the actual military-oriented ones were, I planned on doing an auto one for the occasion. In honor of Veterans Day, it will be based upon Domestic nameplate vehicles. Rules- 1) Maximum of 5 choices. 2) These are your only vehicles. 3) Production cars sold in the US only. 4) Cars must be a model name or at least generation that is NO LONGER BUILT- this is the Veteran part, obviously. 5) As long as the vehicle is no longer on sale, any era is allowed. Happy Veterans Day, and enjoy!!

Hey all. As some of you know I had an 06 malibu SS that I was planning on trading in on a G8 GT when they came to market. Well due to the fact that I was a complete dumb ass those plans had to be flushed down the drain as I got a DUI last december. long story short with that is that I was at an office party and had been drinking pretty steadily for a few hours. Normally If I have more than two beers I don't even consider driving as I've seen first hand how a DUI/DWI can affect a persons life. Unfortunatley I was a bit under the weather and I was also homesick as I hadn;t visited my family in a few months. I was supposed to go up there that night and I felt a very …

clicky This isn't a bad article on the subject. It looks at the BIG picture (inproved fuel economy vs cost of buying a hybrid). If mathematics causes your brain to lock-up, you'd be best to skip the article. The quick and dirty summary: Gas-electric hybrids are the most fuel-efficient passenger cars on the road and ecologically there isn't a more viable option. Until something big changes, though, the industry-high efficiency can't economically offset the steep sticker price.

While watching "Last Comic Standing" tonight, NBC showed two promo spots for a new show starting this fall called "My Own Worst Enemy" with Christian Slater. He plays a duel character - Henry, the average joe, and Eddie, a cross between 007 and an assassin. The second promo showed "Henry" driving in his mundane blue Chevy Traverse, while "Eddie" cruises around in a silver 5th generation Camaro coupe. So NBC is showing both Ford (Knight Rider) and Chevy some lovin' with new fall shows.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Around the country and especially around the upper Midwest, dozens of bright college-age males have been found drowned in rivers, lakes, and ponds after a night of drinking. The "smiley face killer" theory was proposed by a couple retired NYPD cops because a dozen or so of the crime scenes had smiley faces carved into objects nearby. They are found after they have left a bar or party alone. I believe one person survived and told the police someone had pushed them over the edge into a river. The retired cops have pieced together clues and believe it may even be a ring of serial killers around the country. The reason I bring this …

If I had the money, I would do this... ...To the front of my S10. Also, I was flipping through an Auto Trader Extra the other day, and found something I'm going to look into: locally, there is a 1994 Chevy S10 for sale with a 350 V8 for only $2,900. I know the truck is worth that much in powertrain modification alone, so I'm excitied I found this kind of deal. I have to pick up another Extra, though, to get the name of the dealer and the phone number. There is one problem, however: the color is yellow, and it's not GTO YellowJacket yellow, either. This shade is too . . . light for my tastes, so I'm thinking I'll eventually do a paint scheme that would be pearlescent b…

Aaaahhhh....that fresh, newly-washed look is so intoxicating...isn't it? I finally washed my older 4 Monte Carlos this past Saturday [the '87 MC LS daily driver will get its second cleaning of the year this coming weekend, weather permitting, of course]...partly to have them ready for the July 26 gathering here, in case it IS sunny...but mostly to get the "winter dust" off them. Now, they all just look and "feel" so much better! Sure makes a difference when they are clean; driving them after a fresh wash is a bit invigorating, imho. Hmmm...does anyone else who has multiple cars notice that each car as its own "personality"? It just seems that each of my MCs have a d…

Craigslist Chrysler ad As seen on Jalopnik. A very strange Craigslist ad.. From Craigslist: I believe the car originally belonged to my Aunt Betsy, who was born in Wisconsin in 1931, and later migrated to California in 1954, while engaged to my Uncle Talbert. She had a Tabby cat named Blinky, who died in the spring of 57. Blinky had 6 kittens in 1955, all of whom she regrettably gave away at a fair in Modesto. The cats where never seen or heard from again. Betsy left Modesto in 1963, approximately at the time she allegedly helped purchase the car for her lover, Benson, whom Talbert was unaware of. Unbeknownst to Betsy at that period, a second Tabby cat, also nam…

It's that time of year when the Salvation Army guys are standing on busy street corners or outside your local supermarket with their red bucket while jingling their little bell. I don't really mind giving when I have change. I've given a dollar here and there but does anybody feel pangs of guilt or selfishness when you simply walk past the guys or say you don't have any change (whether you do or not)? By Jonathan Adams and Max Hirsch Newsweek International Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue - China's recent rise has brought with it a new conventional wisdom: that everyone must learn Mandarin. But no one's told South Korea yet. Though Chinese is increasingly popular here, the nation seems to be suffering a profound case of English fever. South Korea now boasts at least 10 "English villages"—mock Western communities complete with post offices, pharmacies and the like where kids can practice their language skills. An entire English-only town is due to open on Cheju Island in 2010. And one Internet-based company here even offers English courses for fetuses in the womb. Next door, m…

I watched this test a while back, and really enjoyed it. To my knowledge, the only one who managed to get this whole group together. 'Everday Driver' did a comparo a while back of the Golf R, Evo, Focus RS, and STI. I know these are usually 2 car option threads, but we're going to deviate from that this go-round. Here's the test- Golf R vs Evo vs FocRS vs STI So, which of the following would you rather have? Golf R STI Evo X Final Edition Focus RS

Encyclopedia Brown Just thought I'd share this with everyone. I was going through some of my old things and decided to look up one of the books I read as a boy. I don't quite remember this story though. By the way, this is the 6th link you get when googling encyclopedia brown.

So the last few 'DG' threads got a little action, so here's a new one for you guys. A very simple, but challenging one. Rules- 1) Maximum of 5 choices 2) Only 2017 Model Year vehicles can be chosen 3) Your choices must have had 2017 be the last availability 4) Your choices must be models that received ALL NEW replacements in 2018, or were discontinued entirely 5) Any market is allowed 6) These are your only vehicles Enjoy!

This is mostly for the folks who grew up in the Baltimore-Philadelphia suburban zones in the '60s-'80s. Well, burned into the dark recesses of my childhood are trips to Ginos and Burger King, not McDonalds. Well, in the early '80s, Ginos were converted to Roy Rogers (which were left to dry up) and a major eating institution passed into the history. Well, apparently, no more. The popularity of places like Five Guys and Red Robin have demonstrated that there is a market for upscale burger restaurants, and many of the original Ginos people are putting together a new Ginos chain. Apparently, the first location was opened in King of Prussia, PA in late 2010, to quite a…

[source: MSN Money] The US-China Ponzi scheme By unwittingly tying together their fortunes as they pursued their own interests, the 2 nations have put themselves on an economic path of mutually assured destruction. By Jon Markman MSN Money Imagine becoming so successful at your job that you stack up $2 trillion in income, which you conservatively place in short-term U.S. Treasury bonds for safekeeping. Now imagine that when you try to cash in those bonds to buy a few things for your kids, the clerk at the bank abruptly shuts her window and tells you to go away. That is essentially the situation faced by China these d…

Inflation: not good, and has a clear reason why it happens. Historically it's easiest seen in the worst times. Germany after WWI. Industry had been destroyed, therefor minimal wealth generation through manufacturing, mining, and farming. Paper money was printed to let government pay for it's expenditures because tax income was very minimal, ~1% of their budget at times. This caused their money to be devalued, like stock of a business that was losing money, with no hope of growth. the smartest german citizens bought gold and other currency before Hyper inflation happened. Wholesale Price Index: July 1914 1.0 Jan 1919 2.6 July 1919 3.4 Jan 1…

One of the guys at the local electrical supply house just bought a Buick Grand National...for $2500. It ain't pretty. It's got a million Jesus loves you stickers on it, a regular Regal fender for one of the front fenders, the headliner is missing, and it needs paint in the worst sort of way. And it's got rust, but very minor. Also comes with a stack of paperwork that my tape measure says is three inches thick, the motor and tranny have been rebuilt by GOOD local people, the rest of the interior is damn near perfect, and it's a T-top car. Oddly enough, it was ordered with every option, including the upgraded stereo, but no posi rear end. Making me even sicker is…

So wanted to try one of these for a while. Hope enough of you guys will participate. Choose up to four sports/pony/sporty/performance cars that you would buy with your OWN MONEY. Whatever you can realistically afford NEW or USED, one out of three - four choices you will present. Post picture of them in your favorite color.

A bear cub sniffed out a barbecue-chicken-and-jalapeño pizza in the back seat of a vintage red Buick convertible at an upper Kingsbury Grade parking lot on Sunday, jolting onlookers and leaving a cheesy mess behind. About 30 people watched the cub lumber around the Tahoe Village parking lot before it homed in on the Buick and the pizza. Frightened swimmers stayed inside the nearby pool area as the bear - ignoring the car's horn which blew non-stop as the cub pressed the seat into the steering wheel - crawled inside to ferret out the pizza that was on the floor. "The bear was loping along in the parking lot and then decides to get inside the car," said resident Jerry Pat…

I'm asking anyone here that from time to time goes to junkyards in search of parts for your projects and/or repair needs if you'd be willing to help me out. I'm looking to find a decent condition steering wheel from either a 1955-1956 GMC (preferred) or Chevrolet pickup (1957+ were a different design); if you find a GMC, I'd like the horn button too if it's not too far gone with rust. Here's a picture of the steering wheel I'm looking for: If you happen to be out in a junkyard and bump into a '55/'56 GMC or Chevy truck and that steering wheel pictured above is in good condition, would you remove and purchase it for me? You can PM me to find out the max I could pay…

I was thinking of a scenario with regards to the auto industry and government regulation of it. WHAT IF... everything were the same, as far as world events... the gas crises, safety and emissions regulations all happened exactly as in real life... but CAFE, or any form of it, were never thought of? What would today's vehicle lineups look like? Would market forces have been such that things would look pretty much the same... or would the car world look completely different? If you have a few minutes, let us speculate...

Well, first of all. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I have much to be thankful for on this day. Last night we had a close call with my grandmother. There are a lot of details that I would rather not get into here, but luckily she is still with us. For that reason, I have everything to be thankful for this day. This may seem trivial considering it all, but last night on the way back from the hospital in Grand Forks, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a little bit of nature. A (4x5 buck) and my Suburban had a little run in. Instinctively I applied the brakes when I saw him coming out of the ditch, had I not, I might have whizzed right by him. Anyway, I can't do much …

Since Im in full car search mode, I found this pretty amusing. An Ontario (Canada) man is running a contest to win his car. Basically, he wants a $50 dollar checque, and a written entry not to exceed 100 words on the theme of “I/We want to win this Saab because..”. After 100 entries, a winner will be picked, and get the car. Easy $5000 bucks for the guy, possibly a $50 dollar SAAB for you. http://www.bmts.com/~warren/ http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-c...QQAdIdZ45525269 Crazy, eh?

A few days ago I posted a thread titled "Critical mass" during a point this week where things in my personal life had become very stressful to me and I needed to vent. I eventually deleted that thread not wishing to add further stagnation to the stormy climate here at Cheers and Gears. In that thread I made mention that doctors were fairly certain that my uncle had cancer. This bit of news was the "breaking point" for me earlier this week, having witnessed two family members fall victim to the disease prior. I really didn't know how to handle that news. However, I recently received the good news that they are no longer certain that he has cancer. I am relieved to say th…

While I haven't been much of a fan of Motor Trend lately, I picked up the Sept/Oct issue of Motor Trend Classic for an article on the Corvair, and an interesting piece on the '59 Chevy's fins. This morning I'm going through, page by page, checking out the mag, and I find an editorial by Angus Mackenzie, entitled "History Lesson", and I swear, this man somehow got inside my mind and published what I (and others) have been thinking and posting here for years. Here are some excerpts: "...Henry Ford: 'History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition...' The irony is Ford Motor Company might be in a whole lot less trouble right now if the folks who r…

Well to make a long story short, two years ago I had a transmission fluid flush done on the Riviera at around 85K miles. At the time there was nothing "wrong" with it, I just wanted to treat my car to a bit of preventative care. Well I soon came to find that my decision to prevent possible transmission problems down the road was actually the cause of them. Soon after the car was serviced my smooth shifting transmission started slipping into overdrive. At first it was only when the car was cold and once it was at full operating temp it was fine. This went on for awhile until it became more and more frequent, and began to not go into overdrive at all. Finances have be…

The question: What cars & when used the E-Body? Don't start typing yet.... I believe a huge degree of confusion comes from those who confuse body designations with chassis designations, which are usually the same folk who want to call all BOF chassis' "platforms" as if they were unibodies. Chassis's, or frames, were NOT designated by the same body letter codes. The B-Body Buick rode a completely different chassis/frame than a B-Body Pontiac in 1960, for example. And FRAMES ARE NOT 'PLATFORMS' !!! "Buick introduces the prestige, E-body based, Riviera, as a 1963 model." --( http://www.gm.com/company/corp_info/history/gmhis1960.html ) "There was styling, of course: …

First off I haven't been posting nearly as regular as I do most days because my family and I went on a trip to the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone and Black Hills/Custer State Park for 12 days. Long story short took the Torrent and she now has over 6.5K on here up from the 2.5K she started out with. Fuel economy was good not great averaged about 23.25 if I figured right. Not bad for 75-80mph interstate running and climbing many a moutain pass. Handling was great for a small SUV and the back roads were very fun. Could use an extra cubic foot or two in the truck area other than that my Torrent made the trip nearly perfect. Except in Cheyenne WY my A/C stopped blowing cold air. I t…

Actually, I am not crazy about going there but, when I have to, I will definitely go. For the Regal, I have bought 5 items there - and saved myself a lot of money: 1. Heater blower motor 2. Washer fluid bottle 3. Radio pod 4. Steering wheel 5. Dash light 30 second delay switch ($7 instead of $200+, ridiculous) When I am there, it's fun to walk around the aisles and look at cars I used to like (i.e. Grand Le Mans )

So I'm looking for photos on Google and I come upon one of my old signatures. The one of a red '59 Electra-225 Riviera from the brochure, I had labeled the corner of it in a very modern font (Geneva?) and so there was no mistaking it. I went to the source site & it's in Hebrew, or it might be Arabic but since there are stars of david for a rating system I'm guessing Hebew. Anyway I notice a few other photos that turn out to be my old signatures and there's that very unique photo I took of that 1966 Corvair that I photographed in Kingston, NH when I was contemplating buying that car. It was the Corvair 4dr hardtop & I opend up both doors and took a high …
