Honda appears to be the next automaker to join the downsized, turbocharged engine craze. Automotive News reports that the next-generation Civic - possibly arriving as early as this year - will feature a turbocharged four-cylinder as its base engine. "Downsized turbocharging will be the base, even for the Civic," said Yoshiharu Yamamoto, global r&d head of Honda. The turbocharged engine will be a 1.5L four-cylinder that will deliver the power of a normally-aspirated 2.0 to 2.4L four-cylinder engine with excellent torque and better fuel efficiency according to Yamamoto. The new engine is expect to go into production later this year at Honda's Anna, Ohio plant. Sourc…

Rumour has it Alliston (down the street from me) is the leading candidate. A lot of farms around the plant have been bought out, and our healthcare/literacy rates are a big plus. Hopefully our strong dollar isn’t too much of a deterrent.

Honda has finally pulled the curtain back on the 2017 Civic Hatchback that will be arriving this fall in the U.S. There aren't many changes with the transition from concept to production model. There is a sloping roofline and a upswept beltline. The model shown here - Sport Touring - features side skirts, intergrated rear wing, and center mounted exhaust. The Civic Hatchback will only be available with the turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder. The LX, EX, and EX-L get 174 horsepower, while the Sport and Sport Touring feature 180. Both tunes of the turbo 1.5 will feature the same amount of torque - 162. One exciting bit of news is that the hatchback (along with the Civi…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 20, 2012 The Honda CR-Z tries to blend sportiness and hybrid efficiency. However, it doesn't do so well on either one and has been a poor seller. Through October, Honda has only sold 3,705 CR-Zs (down 64.7% year over year in sales). Still Honda still believes in the CR-Z and has made some changes for the 2013 model year. Outside, the CR-Z gets a reworked front fascia, new wheels, and a rear diffuser. Other outside changes include two new paint colors and and optional LED daytime running lights. Honda has also made small changes inside with new trim, redesigned door panels and new standard features like a rearvi…

Didn't see this posted anywhere here: http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0...2207975,00.html It's widely accepted (if little-known) that GM is one of the pack leaders when it comes to hydrogen research. But here Honda is about to pull a Toyota and win huge mindshare by releasing this car. Personally, I think GM should at least have an answer ready to go, if not released around the same timeframe, but I understand the lack of money might be an issue. I just hope somebody at GM is paying attention.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 19, 2013 It has been a few years since Honda did a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in one of their vehicles (first-generation Acura RDX), but the company is coming back with turbocharged engines with a vengeance. This morning in Tokyo, Honda introduced three new turbocharged VTEC engines; a 1.0L three-cylinder unit, and two four-cylinder engines displacing 1.5L and 2.0L. The new engines utilize direct injection and advanced cooling techniques, such as pistons with cooling galleries to run relatively high compression ratios for turbocharged engines (10.6:1 for the 1.5L and 9.8:1 for the 2.0L). Honda said these…

If you happen to have a pre-production Honda Civic Type R just sitting around, what would you do with it? If you happen to an engineer in special projects division at Honda's Swindon plant in the U.K., you decide to make it into a pickup. Codenamed ‘Project P’, the Type R pickup made its debut at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Test Day. To create this truck, the special projects division changed everything from the b-pillar to the back to install a bed with diamond-plate metal bed and a set of rollbars. The big rear wing is retained. The rest of the vehicle is pretty much identical to the standard Type R with a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four …

Tetsuo Iwamura, President and CEO of American Honda, told Autoblog that he is disappointed with the current sales of the Crosstour. "In the case of the Crosstour, I'm really disappointed because that's a nice car, [with] very beautiful styling, and it gives very good driving performance as well as packaging. But yet, we went a bit too far." Since being introduced back in 2009 as a 2010 model, the Crosstour has been struggling in sales. So far in 2011, Honda has only moved 16,679 Crosstours - a 36% drop compared to 2010 when Honda sold 25,927 Crosstours. Iwamaura said Honda is actually "quite satisfied" with sales of most of its vehicle lines (i.e. Accord, Civic, CR-V),…

The minivan is not quite dead yet and the Honda Odyssey, one of the five remaining minivans still in production, is entering its 25th year on the market. Since its launch in 1995, the Odyssey has sold more than 2.7 million units. Honda is quick to point out that most of these are retail sales and not fleet. The Odyssey has been the number one retail seller in the segment for 9 years running. For 2020, all Odysseys will be upgraded to a new 10-speed automatic transmission. This is mated to the existing 280 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 driving the front wheels. Also for 2020, Honda is offering a $1500 25th Anniversary package that includes a chrome roof rack, body si…

Honda is cutting back on production at two of its U.S. plants in anticipation of a slide in sales. The Marysville, Ohio plant and Honda of Indiana are the two plants being affected. The cuts primarily come to the Accord and Civic built in Marysville. Marysville operates two lines and one shift at Marysville on Line 1 will be suspended temporarily. That line produces the Accord, CR-V, ILX, and TLX, but the cuts there will mostly impact Accord. Acura production is unchanged at this time. The CR-V is also produced in Indiana so some production can be shifted from Marysville to there. This news comes after the announcement of the closure of Honda's Swindon UK manufacturin…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 10, 2012 Even though Honda hasn't showed off the production version of the new 2013 Accord, the order sheet has made a surprise appearance. The Temple of VTEC got their hands onto an order sheet for the 2013 Accord. Besides a new six-speed automatic for V6 models and a new CVT for the four-cylinder models, there are two new model designations. On the sheet, there is an Accord Sport and an Accord Touring models. As Honda/Acura begin production of the NSX, talk has sprung up about doing a more extreme version. Nick Robinson, Dynamic Development Leader on the NSX told Autocar there are a number of folks who want Honda to do a Type R version as it would continue the revival of the company’s sporting heritage. Robinson was quick to point out that Honda hasn't approved anything at the moment. What would an NSX Type R look like? It would be lighter than your standard NSX to begin with. A key item that could be removed is the NSX's hybrid powertrain. Not only would it remove a fair amount of weight, but it also would make it rear-wheel drive. There could also be the use of light…

Next at the LA Auto Show, Honda will unveil the coupe version of the Civic. But thanks to an eagle-eye spy photographer, we have our first peek at what the production coupe will look like. While the Civic coupe in the photo has the same bright green color as the concept shown at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, the production model is toned down a bit with no rear wing or distinctive front bumper. But the basic shape is all there. It's expected the Civic coupe will feature the same 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower as found in the sedan. We'll have full details of the coupe whe…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersamdGears.com December 28, 2011 Heather Peters is angry with Honda. Her 2006 Civic Hybrid doesn't get its claimed EPA fuel economy and she isn't satisfied with a proposed class-action lawsuit settlement that would give lawyers $8.5 million while Civic owners would get as little as $100 and rebate coupons for the purchase of a new vehicle. She could take Honda to court. But with Honda's army of lawyers, she wouldn't have a chance. But, Peters has found a way to get a chance and keep Honda's lawyers out of the proceedings. TOKYO — Honda Motor Co. plans to recall 45,335 Civic Hybrid sedans worldwide to repair a voltage converter defect that could stop the car's engine, a company spokeswoman said Friday. Japan's No. 2 automaker plans to recall 7,219 of the vehicles sold in Japan and another 38,116 sold overseas, mostly in the U.S., a Honda spokeswoman said. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing company policy. Honda learned about the defect — which could cause a short circuit that would stop the engine and prevent it from restarting — from overseas reports, the company said in documents filed Thursday with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This becomes an even bigger recall for 2019, 2018 and some 2017 models as Honda sold over 500,000 CR-Vs in the US alone not including this same engine in Canada and Mexico. Honda says they are working on a solution and will apply it under warranty to all engines. Recall: 2004-05 Honda Accords (81K) Honda Motor Co. is recalling 81,000 2004-2005 Accord sedans because of issues that could cause an air bag-related sensor to fail, the company said Wednesday. Honda said in a Jan. 9 letter to the government that the wiring harness for the seat position sensor, which detects the driver’s seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly, was attached in the wrong location and may have been overtightened. Honda said the sensor wire could break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated and prevent the sensor from working properly. When the sensor fails, the air bag system automatically moves to full in…

Patent Panic: China Stymies Honda in Battle To Control Rights to CR-V Design Date posted: 03-24-2006 SHANGHAI — Honda has received a blow in its vigorous legal battle against Chinese car manufacturers that it alleges have copied its CR-V: China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) has canceled the Japanese automaker's patent for the SUV. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 20, 2013 Honda is hard at work on the next-generation Civic Type R which will pack a 2.0L turbo-four with 276 horsepower going to the front wheels. But don't expect to see this hot Civic coming to our shores anytime soon. Part of the reason comes from the Civic sold in the U.S. and the one sold elsewhere is very different. The other part comes from the Civic being seen as a econo-box and launching a high-performance and somewhat costly Civic seems like a bad idea. (+) it's (-): No Hybrid Version of Honda's CR-V Honda has recently told Edmunds that though a Fit Hybrid is indeed in the works, there are no plans to produce a CR-V of the same persuasion. Honda admitted that people who are going to spend the extra coin for a hybrid CR-V likely won't see that money returned in fuel savings. Cars are the only vehicles Honda will be equipping their hybrid systems with. I'm afraid our hopes of a Pilot or Ridgeline hybrid are dashed. Read "Honda Drops Plans for CR-V Hybrid" @ Edmunds

Honda needs to get its mojo back Can the automaker recapture its innovative spirit? James B. Treece Automotive News / February 27, 2006 - 6:00 am TOKYO -- Can Honda Motor Co. get its mojo back? From 1995 to 2000, Honda was the hottest, most innovative Japanese carmaker. A string of hits, led by the Odyssey minivan and CR-V car-based small SUV, set Honda apart. Toyota Motor Corp. responded by copying Honda's ideas and designs. Nissan Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. were left in the dust. Honda's reputation then was reminiscent of Sony Corp.'s in its glory days. Sony didn't unveil a trendsetting Walkman every year. But it came up with innova…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 23, 2012 "For your dealership to take full advantage of the refreshed Civic and the marketing we will have supporting it you must greatly increase the turn rate on our 2012 Civics. With the unprecedented enhancements we have made to the current Civic after its first year in its cycle you will want to have little to no Civics on hand at arrival time of this refreshed 2013 model. The changes made to the 2013 model will make the outgoing 2012 Civic a difficult model sell when they are side to side. I strongly encourage you to discuss your Civic inventory situation with your district manager today, and set up a sell d…

As enthusiasts, we sometimes make the mistake of referring to Honda as a car company. Honda started out as a motorcycle manufacturer, and now makes everything from generators to IRL engines to robots. The Japanese automaker has produced a series of short films to give the rest of the world a better idea of what it's all about. There are three videos so far, and the latest of these short documentary-style productions is about Honda's unique view of failure. The video, titled "Failure: The Secret to Success," provides insight into the thought process of company founder Soichiro Honda, and how he viewed failure as a means to winning. It also shows how much Honda, a s…

Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it will recall about 99,000 Odyssey and Stream minivans produced between 2003 and 2005, while Suzuki Motor Corp. said it would recall about 325,000 vehicles. Honda said a computer problem may cause the failure of a pump that transmits oil to the minivans' continually variable transmissions and that it would repair the defect free of charge. Separately, Suzuki said it will recall a total of about 325,000 vehicles from five models - Alto, Alto Lapin, Kei, Wagon R, and Mr Wagon - because insufficient lubrication of bearings in their transmissions could result in a breakdown. It was not clear whether the recalls affected vehicles sold outs…

Honda Warns Dealers About Civic Supply William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 3, 2011 Honda has put a warning out to their dealers with the 2012 Civic. In a memo sent to dealers, American Honda Motor Co. sales boss John Mendel said the supply will be “severely restricted, with limited availability of certain models.” The memo also states production of the new Civic will, “be at significantly reduced levels at least during the summer months,” because of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March. As a result, analysts said sales of the new Civic could drop below 2010 sales of 260,000 units. “With an all-new and improved model, Ho…

A member on the CivicX forum got their hands on a slide revealing that a six-speed manual transmission option would be available on the turbo-four starting in the 2017 model year. The slide also reveals that it was planned for 2016, but was pushed back a year. No reason as to why wasn't said. Source: CivicX.com, The Truth About Cars Image Source: CivicX.com View full article

So far in 2012, Honda sales are up, has excellent relations with their suppliers, won this year’s Indy 500, and many other good stories that many a company wish they had. However, those in the know see that Honda lost the magic that it once had during the eighties and nineties with its core group of fans. Honda has also began to realize this very fact and is taking some drastic steps to fix it. For the first time in Honda’s history, they have promoted an American, Erik Berkman, to the pos…

Compared to the current crop of infotainment systems, Honda's system shows its age. The navigation and audio sources are somewhat severely dated. That will be changing for 2013. Wired's Autopia reports that Honda is readying a new infotainment system called Hondalink that will first appear in the Fit EV, due out sometime in July. The Honda CR-Z hasn't set the sales chart on fire and it has been canned Europe and Australia. The reason is likely the disappointing hybrid powertrain which offers ho-hum performance and economy. But Honda is planning to change that with the next-generation CR-Z. Car and Driver reports that the next-generation CR-Z - due out in 2017 - will trade in the Honda Fit platform for the Civic. Honda will slice four inches off the Civic platform for its duties in the CR-Z. Power will come from a detuned version from turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder found in the Civic Type-R. The new CR-Z expected to go on sale in 2018. Source: Car and Driver View full article

Edmunds Evaluation: 2005 Honda FCX Not exactly a new car but only recently reviewed. Go figure. Honda admitted that the future of fuel-cell cars is uncertain and there is no guarantee that this type of car will ever make a practical contribution to meeting our transportation needs. The platinum fuel-cell stack is expensive and very labor-intensive to assemble. Notwithstanding, Honda has set an admirable example by putting 15 FCXs on the road, mainly with public agencies in California, and has another five cars that are used for Honda's internal fleet. Honda is also pressing forward with plans to introduce a production fuel-cell vehicle slated to go on sale in two yea…

03/25/2011 - TORRANCE, Calif. Honda will voluntarily recall 2,800 model-year 2011 Odyssey vehicles in the U.S. to replace the side window glass in one or both of the front doors. Honda is taking this step because there is a potential for one or both windows to become detached from the window regulator, causing the window to become inoperative and preventing it from being rolled up or down. In the worst case, the window may bind and shatter onto the occupants. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this defect. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authori…

Honda is making some changes to its executive staff with a number of new appointments. The big change is the announcement of current CEO and president Takanobu Ito stepping down in June. Ito became the CEO back in 2009 and led the company through a tumultuous period which included the financial crisis, the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011; and fluctuating currencies. More recently, Ito has received a lot of criticism for flagging quality issues which has led to a number of recalls, along with delays on a number of key products for the company. Despite the recent problems Ito has been dealing with, he has also introduced a number of reforms to get the company back …

Honda hybrids may cut into Detroit's market share May 21, 2008 4:49 PM ET Link to Source DETROIT (AP) - Honda Motor Co. is coming out with hybrid cars starting early next year that will cost about $1,900 more than comparable gas-only models. The cost for the Detroit Three, according to industry analysts, could be lower market share as U.S. consumers continue their rapid shift to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Analysts say the new hybrids, including a gas-electric hybrid-only model to fight the popular Toyota Prius and a hybrid version of the subcompact Fit, will hit the market at the right time with gasoline prices continuing to rise. The CR-V exterior gets new sheetmetal which gives the CR-V a more refined look with a sloping roof, revised front end, and new taillights. Inside, Honda has improved interior quality, added more interior space, and quick-stow rear seats. In current form, it's powertrain is widely accepted as a benchmark of the industry for refinement, hp, and gas mileage--hitting high marks in all three. What's been the buzz in the last 12 months? That has lead rumors to Honda killing off the Ridgeline and caused American Honda's Truck Planner, Sage Marie issuing a statement saying the truck is staying.
