European jurists announce seven finalists for 2011 Car of the Year by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Nov 9th 2010 at 8:58AM While it may seem like every magazine worth its bar-code is clamoring to select its own Car of the Year, over in Europe things are a bit more civilized. Seven publications from seven different countries get together each year to nominate their collective Car of the Year, speaking in one united voice. The process takes place over the course of months. First comes the nominees, then the finalists and ultimately the solitary winner. The super best-friends have just arrived at that middle step, announcing the finalists for 2011, and as in years past, it'…

It's no secret that GM's in a precarous position right now, and the decisions it makes over the next couple of years will determine its future and, ultimately, its survival. With that in mind, there's never been a better time to play armchair CEO. C&G is pleased to unveil its newest feature, one that'll give all you who fancy yourselves in Rick Wagoner's chair someday a chance for your voice to be heard. For this feature, titled "C&G Wants to Know", we'll take a hot button issue concerning GM and ask the question "How would you address this issue if you were running the show at GM?" Since we'll be running this in the "To General Motors" section, you may just be fo…

"It feels soooooooo good to be back!!!!" Roseville, MI - While Eminem may be in rehab for a drug addition problem, I'm here to say I've gotten my fix of my drug of choice, C&G is back! While there have been rumors that we were closed for good, that Walt had forgotten to pay the hosting bill, and even the tried and feasibly often rumor that the General themselves shut us down. Nope. None are correct. We've decided to move to a more, secure server and in the process it's obvious some changes have had to have been made. Most notable is while it is unfortunate, it was necessary. C&G will have to (take a deep breathe …

NHTSA probes BMW Z4, Mazda3 over steering issues By Drew Johnson The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new investigation involving the BMW Z4 and Mazda3 over steering concerns. The NHTSA’s probe is looking into a possible power-steering defect. The NHTSA has received a total of 107 steering complaints involving the 2003-2005 BMW Z4 and 33 complaints against the 2007-2009 Mazda3. One of the BMW complaints resulted in a crash while three of the Mazda3’s reported cases ended in a collision. According to the NHTSA, the BMW Z4’s “steering wheel sticks, binds or locks up, and requires increased steering effort resulting in difficulty controlling …

BMW Group and PSA Peugeot Citroën want to Expand Cooperation to Hybrid Systems MONDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2010 The ongoing love affair between the BMW Group and PSA Peugeot Citroën has just become more intense as the two companies announced today their intention to further expand the cooperation to include hybrid components for front-wheel-drive vehicles by singing a memorandum of understanding. Both parties have agreed not to disclose financial details of the agreement. In a joint statement, the two automakers said the components are to be used in front-wheel-drive vehicles with electrified drive trains with the proposed deal said to offer significant economies of scale for …

Hey, guys. To address the recent and growing problems with our server, C&Gs host provider is going to be moving the forum to a better, more reliable server on Friday, November 24th. Scheduled downtime is approx 1 hour, which will occur between approx 5:00PM Friday and 3:00AM Saturday. This will hopefully cure what has been ailing us. In the meantime, I and all the other moderators (except Ven) truly appreciate your patience and loyalty while we work to improve our connection issues. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving! -Brian

a "readers corner" , so there is a place to leave a review on any good books anyone reads... hehe it can be out own "book club" hahahah but the idea is tell what book it is and maybe a decent couple of paragraphs including why you wanted to read it, what it was about, and a critique of it. it would include any genre, fiction and nonfiction. just an idea.

Since the Politics section seems to be the most active forum on the website right now... and it's not related to automotive news... a small restriction has been put in place. In order to enter the Politics forum, you must make at least 5 posts in any other forum in the previous 24 hours before you will be permitted to post in Politics. No one, not even myself nor the other Admins are exempted from this rule. This also presumes that you already have access to Politics. -DD

Well, we're back and kickin' butt, so we decided to make a few revisions while we could. Allow me the break the changes down for you. The Other Guys has now been broken down into four distinct sections by geography or company - Ford, DCX, Europe, and Asia. We decided the placement of each individual make should be based on what's commonly accepted as 'country of origin' (Japan for Nissan though its French-owned) and ease of grouping (a new platform shared by multiple Ford divisions placed in Ford rather than Ford, European, and Asian). C&G takes pride in our easy navigability and we hope this will be easy and hassle-free for everyone. 2006 …

I'm sure you've all noticed the nice new thing at the top of the forums. Looks good, but I dislike it for two reasons. First is that it is wide, causing potential unwanted sideways scrolling. Secondly, it has no "Log Out" link that I can find, meaning I cannot change screen names and pretend to be everybody's favorite crazy Floridian.

Report: Asian automakers closing in on 50% share of U.S. auto sales While it may come as no surprise that Asian car companies are constantly gaining market share in the U.S. market, the actual numbers are quite amazing. Ten years ago, companies like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and the rest accounted for a little more than one-quarter of total light-vehicle sales in the States. By 2005, that figure stood at 36.6 percent. By 2007? 41.9 percent. In 2009, Asian automakers sold a full 47.9 percent of the cars and light trucks we Americans bought. These numbers come from the latest report by Ward's Auto. Perhaps predictably, that same dispatch tells us that American automa…

Nissan, Hyundai reportedly duking it out for No. 2 Asian automaker in U.S. by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Aug 30th 2010 at 9:32AM Nissan has long been the number three Asian automaker in the U.S., lagging behind both Honda and Toyota on the sales charts. But the Japanese automaker has been on a bit of a roll of late, with 10 straight months of sales gains and an aggressive product onslaught planned for the next 24 months. Nissan would love to unseat Honda to finally sneak up to the number two slot in the States, but a funny thing's happening: Hyundai is doing its best to push Nissan down to number four. Nissan and Hyundai are currently in a dead heat in U.S. auto sales.…

BMW has done the (inexplicable) inevitable, expanding its M treatment from cars to SUVs (or Sports Activity Vehicles in BMW parlance). The New York Auto Show marks the world debut of the X5 M and X6 M, and in typical M fashion, the high riders get substantially more power than their more pedestrian variants. Both vehicles get uprated versions of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that debuted in the X6 last year. Power goes from a mere 400 hp up to 555 hp in M form with torque swelling from 450 to 500 lb-ft. While the increase in twist doesn't seem like all that much, BMW is claiming it's produced from 1,500 all the way to 5,650 rpm. The 4.4-liter V8 is direct injected …

Fiat, Ford lead sales decline in Europe as Audi gains Automotive News Europe -- September 16, 2010 10:40 CET (Bloomberg) -- Fiat S.p.A., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. led a fifth-consecutive monthly drop in European car sales as the end of government incentives hit demand. Volkswagen AG's Audi luxury unit gained market share. Registrations fell 12 percent to 731,503 vehicles in August from a year earlier, Brussels-based industry group ACEA said Thursday. Eight-month deliveries decreased 3 percent to 9.3 million. Fiat declined 24 percent, while Ford slipped 20 percent and Toyota slumped 19 percent. European demand is declining as governments end or trim subsidi…

So after not being on the forum for about a day, I click the "view new content" button, and get... 3 results. I highly doubt the board has been that inactive in the last day. Is there a setting somewhere that decides how long after a new post something gets marked as not new anymore? Can we extend that to a few days instead of less than one? Not sure what I missed, or how to find what everyone's been talking about for the last day or so.

Yes yes... I broke the front page. I'm not sure what happened. I was upgrading the Garage system to the latest version and for some reason it took out the uPortal app that runs our front page. I've tried re-installing uPortal to no avail. I'm debating whether to put my efforts into fixing the uPortal app or if I should just finally bite the bullet and activate the Pages system that was intended to replace it.

Audi, Mercedes forge ahead in China September 6, 2010 06:01 CET Print Email Reprints FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Audi and Mercedes-Benz racked up more eye-popping sales in China in August, tapping into a rich vein of growth as living standards rise in the world's most populous nation. Audi said its China sales jumped by two-thirds to 22,350 units, bringing the total for the past eight months to nearly 152,800, a year-to-date gain of 63 percent. This puts China on track to eclipse Germany as Audi's single-largest market as domestic new-vehicle registrations amounted to 144,365 units through August, according to official data. Audi controls a much bigger slice …

Report: Mahindra says it has terminated U.S. dealer agreement by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 28th, 2010 at 11:25AM Mahindra's four-year saga with Global Vehicles is taking so many turns, it should get a telenovela on Univision. When we recently posted that the Pik-Up finally received EPA certification, GV and its dealer network were excited and ready to go. However, commenters on that post noted a message on Mahindra's site indicating that the company's relationship with GV was kaput. Mahindra hasn't said a word since, but Global Vehicles and the dealers have let folks know that they aren't impressed and that they have no idea what Mahindra thinks it's doing. Gl…

German luxury cars in high demand, but not in Germany 10:28 AM If you're interested in a German luxury car, you're probably not German. Business is booming for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche, a nice turnaround from a slow 2009,the Detroit News reports. Plants are so busy that some are apparently avoiding the end-of-the-year shutdown and running this week to try to catch up with demand. Demand, that is, in export markets like China, Brazil and the U.S. But not in Germany. There, in the fatherland, German luxury is still just that, a luxury. Sales slipped 25.2% in the first 11 months of the year. How much is demand up. Nine of the 10 top selling luxury nameplate…

Toyota, Honda, Nissan shares surge as Japan halts yen rise September 15, 2010 - 9:00 am ET TOKYO (Reuters) -- The Nikkei stock average today jumped 2.3 percent to a one-month closing high after Japan intervened to weaken the yen, boosting shares of Toyota, Honda, Nissan and other exporters. Japan intervened to sell yen for the first time in six years, bringing the currency off 15-year highs against the dollar. The action lifted the Nikkei out of negative territory and the index surged as much as 3 percent at one stage. Automakers rose across the board with Toyota Motor Corp. surging 3.8 percent to 3,010 yen and Honda Motor Co. advancing 4 percent to 2,944 yen. Nissan…

Tata Nano retrofitted with four-year warranty to assuage quality fears by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Dec 10th 2010 at 2:00PM Tata Nano sales may have started out strong, but a number of price increases and several reports of electrical or exhaust fires have resulted in a huge sales plunge for the world's most affordable vehicle. Last month, Tata sold just 509 copies of the micro mini – a far cry from the massive waiting list for the Nano back in 2009. Automotive News reports that the Indian automaker is looking to once again win over perspective buyers by introducing a four-year factory warranty. What's more, Tata will extend the warranty to all 70,000 owners already…

Russian auto sales jump 45+ percent in June, July By Mark Kleis Like the U.S. and other global auto markets, Russia faced a steep decline in auto sales during the economic instability of 2009, and now the market appears to be showing signs of recovery after posting two consecutive months of increased sales nearing 50 percent compared to 2009. The Association of European Business (AEB) has reported the latest auto sales in Russia, and according to a report by Reuters, for the month of July Russia moved 173,171 new cars from dealer lots, narrowly missing the performance in June that resulted in 174,838 sales. These increases, compared to the same months in 2009, represen…

Finalists For 2011 European COTY Awards Announced By Viknesh Vijayenthiran Editor November 2nd, 2010 2011 Volvo S60Enlarge PhotoThe finalists for the 2011 European Car of the Year awards have been announced and surprisingly there is not a single luxury car among them, except perhaps the 2011 Volvo S60, which sits near the bottom of the luxury car spectrum. This means that original candidates like the new Jaguar XJ, Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW 5-Series were all overlooked. Not surprisingly, most of the finalists are economical compacts, reflecting the changing trend of what’s most important when judging new cars. Even the all-electric Nissan Leaf has made this year’s fi…

The new products are called the Magic and the Winger. Ratan Tata, the visionary chairman of Tata Motors, aims to change the face of Indian transportation. In 2005 he turned the light-commercial-vehicle sector upside-down with the four-wheeler Ace pickup truck. The Ace had all the abilities of popular, motorcycle-derived three-wheelers but with one extra wheel and other amenities. It was so clearly the right product for its …

Why do I need to constantly log back in? Most of the time, I open this site, log in, click view new posts, read a couple, then try to reply to one, and when I click submit post, it says I can't because I need to log in. I log in again, and I'm taken back to the front page, with my reply not being posted. It's getting very annoying.

Sept. car sales down 10.4% in w. Europe; no recovery seen Paul McVeigh New-car sales in western Europe fell by 10.4 percent in September, according to J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting. The UK-based market researchers now expect a 6.4 percent decline to 12.8 million in the region's car sales this year, followed by a 1.8 percent drop to 12.57 million next year as government austerity measures dampen large consumer purchases. "The market continues to compare poorly year-on-year to a 2009 market that was inflated by government scrappage incentives," J.D. Power said in a statement. The company said an annualized selling rate of 12.4 million is weak by historical standard…

Europe baulks at GM-style shakeout that could transform prospects Europe's automotive manufacturers lack the will to rid themselves of unprofitable operations that threaten their future, and experts predict a future of muddling through rather than decisive action to restore health and profits. At a conference in Bilbao, Spain, last month, Ford Europe Chairman and CEO John Fleming said overcapacity had reached 35 percent and was getting worse. In a sane world, this would mean that the least productive producers in Europe would be under pressure to close. After all, the existence of a chronically inefficient manufacturer simply makes it uneconomic for everybody. As the w…

Japanese automakers report production recovery Associated Press Tokyo -- Japanese automakers reported sharp increases Tuesday in global production for the first half of the year, and for June in particular -- with Toyota seeing a 16.2 percent surge, underlining a recovery in auto demand from a dismal plunge a year earlier. Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, said it produced 739,683 vehicles in June, as sales grew in Japan and abroad, and exports expanded to North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. For the first half, Toyota's worldwide production totaled 4.36 million vehicles, marking a 46.8 percent rise from the previous year -- underlining th…

Hey everyone, In light of the news that GM hasdivested its holdings in Fuji Heavy Industries - parent company of Subaru - the Subaru Forum once found under Foreign Exchange has been closed and deleted. All its current discussion topics have been relocated to the Asian Marques forum and merged with that forum's discussions. Nissan, Hyundai profits soar; U.S., China seen slowing July 29, 2010 - 4:16 am ET SEOUL/YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co's forecast-beating quarterly profits may prove tough to match in the second half as robust sales in China and elsewhere start to slow. A patchy recovery in the U.S. market has become one of the biggest concerns for the auto industry, especially Japanese automakers, which rely heavily on the region for its profits. Nissan, Japan's No.3 automaker, reported its strongest quarterly operating profit in more than two years as sales surged, but it left its cautious guidance unchanged amid an increasingly murky outlook for d…

I've noticed some oddness over the last week, when typing into a form for a post, as I am doing right now, occasionally the cursor suddenly backspaces to the beginning of the word I'm typing--or back several words. I've seen this behaviour on these forums and another that is also using IP.Board (2.3.1 and 2.3.6), on multiple computers---a Win XP machine using Chrome, a Vista machine w/ both Chrome and Firefox 3.5. Anyone seen anything like this? It can be very annoying when it happens 5-6 times in typing a post, as it did typing this one.

European troubles could rattle Fiat Chrysler expects to see April sales jump BY GREG GARDNER FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER Chrysler expects to report its first substantial monthly sales increase in the U.S. in more than two years Monday, but CEO Sergio Marchionne is shifting attention to Fiat, where problems are deepening. The European half of this new alliance is facing change nearly as wrenching as Chrysler's government-backed bankruptcy. Car sales in Italy are expected to fall about 15% this year because the government stopped paying consumers to replace dilapidated old vehicles. Fiat is separating its car business from Iveco trucks and CNH farming and construction e…

He'll be in charge of setting up both the sketch and chopping competitions that you guys all know and love. Let's give our newest staff member a round of applause.

Even though we have the "view new posts" option in the menu, I've found it over the years to be unreliable sometimes, as it can and will randomly clear out the most recent posts, so nothing shows up (like just now). What about if in addition to "view new posts" the site incorporated RSS, which is far more reliable? Just a thought.

Small Japanese SUVs outpacing supply in Beijing 04/28/2010, 2:19 AM BY MARK KLEIS While attending the ongoing Beijing Auto Show, consumers are being presented with seemingly countless options of electric and hybrid gas-electric vehicles. Outside of the show, however, consumers are opting for gas-powered SUVs and shunning hybrids and electric vehicles at dealers. According to Gasgoo, several Toyota and Honda dealers in Beijing are complaining of shortages of small SUVs, while hybrid vehicles are having to be sold at a loss to clear them from dealer lots. Beijing Honda dealers explain that customers in Chaoyang, a district of Beijing, must wait two months to receive the…

Marchionnne says next European car merger may involve French Bloomberg News April 13, 2010 06:01 CET ROME (Bloomberg) -- Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne said the next European auto merger may involve a French manufacturer. “The next merger will probably be French,” Marchionne told reporters in Rome today, when asked what the next industry consolidation move could be. “They tried with Mitsubishi and they will try with someone else,” the CEO said, referring to PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, the French carmaker that ended talks last month over a proposed equity swap with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp. PSA also has an engine partnership with BMW AG. The companies said in Febr…

Volkswagen Wants Alfa Romeo In The Family, Fiat Says NO! William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 15, 2011 Volkswagen has been making passes at Alfa Romeo, trying to get the Italian automaker to leave it's parent company Fiat and join the Volkswagen family. Earlier this month, VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech said if Alfa Romeo was under the Volkswagen umbrella of brands, they could see sales of 400,000 vehicles within five years. This week, a rumor has come around saying Porsche could provide assistance to Alfa if they moved to the Volkswagen family. Part of the assistance could be a new flat-four engine Porsche is working on. The engine …

Japanese Auto Makers Drive Ahead With Fuel-Cell Vehicle Programs By Roger Schreffler and Mack Chrysler WardsAuto.com, Sep 29, 2010 9:00 AM TOKYO – Fuel-cell-powered vehicles may join the industry mainstream sooner than anyone thinks due to developments taking place in Asia. “Hydrogen energy and fuel-cell technologies have achieved greater acceptance and are likely to be phased in earlier in Asia, especially in Japan and South Korea, than anywhere else in the world,” writes Peter Hoffmann, publisher and editor of the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter. Hoffmann particularly is upbeat about efforts by Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. “Both auto makers have ind…

Introduction By Mike Hudson Email Date posted: 12-19-2005 Every office has one. You know, the employee who has seemingly done no wrong since coming onboard. Every decision he makes turns into profits and every review comes with a healthy raise or promotion attached. At first, the Golden Boy is loved by all. But after a few years, the mountains of praise start to annoy coworkers. Soon resentment sets in. His nicer attributes fade into the past while his flaws start to irritate you. So when a worthy challenger emerges from the ranks, it's no surprise people are pulling for the new guy. And so it is with our latest matchup between front-wheel-drive fou…
