With new fuel economy regulations coming around the corner, many automakers are trying a number of things to meet those upcoming standards. Case in point: Ford is using aluminum in the next-generation F-150, and General Motors is reportedly doing the same for their next full-size truck. What about Ram Trucks? A new report says the brand will be sticking with steel for the time being. Reuters has learned from two sources that when Ram gives their truck a refresh in 2017, aluminum will not be in the picture. The earliest that Ram would add the material is after 2020 when the truck will be redesigned. This move could either hurt Ram if aluminum proves to be ticket for sale…

The past few years have seen truck manufacturers engage in a war of fuel economy numbers. Using new engines and fuel saving technologies, manufacturers are using fuel economy as a big selling point. Speaking with Automotive News, Ram brand director Bob Hegbloom says there is a big prize that all truck companies are aiming for: 30 MPG. "The first manufacturer that gets to 30 mpg wins," said Hegbloom. "We are seeing that with our 28 mpg EcoDiesel as well as the 25 mpg on the Pentastar V-6 model that fuel economy is so important. We are seeing it in the share gains and the growth for the brand. That's a number that is out there, but I don't think you can stop there." Hegb…

One of the more notable segments that has been seeing massive growth is the compact commercial van. What used to be a place where the Ford Transit Connect and Ram C/V Tradesman (AKA Dodge Caravan Cargo Van), has now become a battleground. There's the new Ford Transit Connect, the Nissan NV200/Chevrolet City Express twins, and now the 2015 Ram ProMaster City. The ProMaster City is the Fiat Doblo wearing some new clothes. The front end wears a large Ram grille and restyled headlights. Otherwise, the ProMaster City and Fiat Doblo are the same from the A-Pillar and back. Ram will offer the ProMaster City in one wheelbase (122.4 inches) and two different configurations; the T…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 2, 2013 We've been reporting for the past few years on Ram getting a version of the Fiat Doblo to compete with the likes of the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200. Well today Ram has finally confirmed that a version of Doblo would be introduced into the U.S. sometime next year wearing the ProMaster City name. "The Ram ProMaster City further expands the Ram Commercial truck lineup, which includes everything from vans to pickups to Class Four and Five trucks. As Ram Commercial continues to gain share and grow sales in the market, we will be aggressive in our goal of expanding our commercial vehicle offerings," …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2013 Chrysler is taking the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee Concept out to dealer shows to gauge reception and find out from dealers if the concept should become a production model. "We will take it to some dealer shows and talk to dealers. We try to listen to the dealers. They know their marketplace," said Dave Sowers, Ram's head of marketing. "It is something that we could execute.” However if the Rumble Bee is given the green light, there will be a few items that will be left out. "Some of the things that we put on the truck weren't volume production possible for us. That flat yellow paint would be a little bit o…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 17, 2013 Let's go back in time to 2003, when Ram was still part of the Dodge family. It was around that time when a special model of the Ram was introduced. Called the Rumble Bee, this special Ram 1500 regular cab donned a yellow and black paint job and a number of touches to pay homage to the Rumble Bee cars of the sixties. Well Ram is doing it again. At the Woodward Dream Cruise today, Ram unveiled a concept version of the Rumble Bee. Starting with the lightest configuration of the Ram 1500 (regular cab with 2WD), Ram applies a Drone Yellow paint job with a matte finish, back accent strip with the Rumble Bee log…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 13, 2013 At one time, the term 'luxury pickup truck' was an oxymoron. But now, automakers are churning them out like they're not going out of style. Ford has three different luxury versions of the F-150 (King Ranch, Platinum, Limited), General Motors has the GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado High Country, and Ram has the Laramie Longhorn and Laramie Limted. However, Ram CEO Reid Bigland believes there is more room for a more posh truck. “I don’t even know where the ceiling is on the premium pickup truck,” Bigland said to reporters this week. For those wondering, the Ram Laramie Longhorn models start at $44,…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 24, 2013 The Ford Raptor doesn't have any competition. Okay, you could make the argument that the Ram Runner is the closest one. The difference between the two is that the Raptor is built on the production line, while the Ram Runner is built at a dealership after a buyer buys the modifications necessary. That could be an item of the past for Ram as Chrysler debates whether to offer it as a production model. “My boss would really like us to try to do a little more research on the Raptor and how it does (in the market),” said Pat Dougherty, the vice president of Mopar parts, sales and field operations. “If we cou…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 6, 2013 Ram has gone ahead and announced pricing for the new 2014 ProMaster van lineup due later this year. The lowest priced ProMaster you can get is the ProMaster 3500 chassis cab cutaway with a 136-inch wheelbase is the $27,025 (includes $995 destination charge). A ProMaster 1500 Cargo van starts at $29,625. While Ram announced pricing for fourteen different versions of the ProMaster, what they didn't announce is the pricing for the EcoDiesel engine and the six-speed automated manual transmission powertrain combo and if it would be available in all models. That will likely come later down the road. Source: …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 14, 2013 It has been long rumored and caught on camera, but now it can come out. Chrysler announced today that the 2014 Ram 1500 will come with the option of diesel V6 engine, making it the only light-duty pickup to come with a diesel in the marketplace. “Truck owners have been emphatically asking for it, and Ram will be the only manufacturer to offer a diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The half-ton truck market is incredibly competitive, and although we’re honored the Ram 1500 has received a number of prestigious awards, we cannot rest on what we have accomplished, w…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 11, 2013 When Ram aired its "So God Made a Farmer" ad during the super bowl, it resonated with many people. Unfortunately for Ram, most would say it was the Dodge Ram ad, not the Ram ad. Even worse was certain media outlets calling it the Dodge Ram ad. "Does it bother me? A little bit. Does it really annoy me? A little bit. When you realize how long our trucks have been Dodge Ram trucks, you can't expect the whole world (to figure it out.) Look how long it took journalists — and we still have journalists that still call it Dodge Ram,” said Ram CEO Fred Diaz. Diaz admits that the rebranding could take a very …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 9, 2013 If you have been looking for a pickup that can tow a mansion with no sweat, Ram has the truck for you. Earlier this morning, Ram announced that the new 2013 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty will be able to tow a maximum weight of 30,000 pounds. To put that number into perspective, the Ram 3500 would be able to tow twelve Fiat 500s. Also, the 30,000 pound rating is 6,900 pounds more than the nearest competitors, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD trucks. The 2013 Ram 3500 now boasts a Gross Combined Weight Rating 37,600 pounds. How were Ram engineers able to pull off this feat? Under the hood lies a upgraded …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 30, 2012 A couple of years after Chrysler separated the Dodge and Ram, the company is once again performing a separation. This time it deals Ram and the creation of a separate sub-division for Ram's commercial trucks and vans. Named Ram Commercial, the new sub-brand will will include the 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks and 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs in Tradesman trims, the Ram C/V van, and starting next year, the new Ram ProMaster van. The ProMaster is the North American version of Fiat's Ducato van lineup. “The Ram ProMaster further strengthens our commercial lineup, offering a full line of work trucks…

Anyone else seen these new RAM ads that say something along the lines of "When you only build trucks"? Anyone else have trouble holding back from yelling at them? Hey "Ram", we all remember that you just dropped "Dodge" from in front of your name, and we all know you're part of Chrylser, who builds a heck of a lot more than just trucks. /rant

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 19, 2012 Car & Driver has uncovered some recent trademark filings from Chrysler for 'Promaster' and 'Promaster City'. Besides sounding like some fishing equipment, Car & Driver believes these are the names for the new vans from Fiat for the truck brand. 'Promaster' will be the name for Ram version of the Fiat Ducato van, while the 'Promaster City' will be the the Fiat Doblo. The two vans will be arriving next year. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 27, 2012 The Ram Tradesman HD was an interesting idea for pickup. Using the new Tradesman 1500 as a base, Ram slipped in the suspension and chassis bits from the 2500 HD. However according to PickupTrucks.com, the Tradesman HD will not be appearing for the 2013 model year and anytime after that. No concrete reason was given as to why the Ram Tradesman HD was given the boot. PickupTrucks.com thinks that with the new 2013 Ram 1500s beginning production and the HD versions getting ready for their redesign, the Tradesman HD wasn't a high-enough priority. A more performance themed Silverado (a'la Camaro/Corvette), and something in the veins of the Syclone/Typhoon-but-part-Denali with the Sierra. 2WD, V8 performance, RWD (if wanted, make AWD an option), offered in all cab configurations, and customizable option…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2012 Seeing a pickup truck fill up with diesel is a common occurrence. Seeing a Ram 1500 filling up with diesel is not. A new spy shot gotten by the folks at Automotive.com shows a Ram 1500 getting some diesel into its tank. The truck had been seen testing in the Southern California mountains. As we've reported before, the engine of choice for the Ram 1500 diesel will be a 3.0L VM Motori turbodiesel V6. The same engine will used in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 7, 2012 While GM has shelved their small diesel for their half-ton trucks, Ram looks to be soldiering on with their plans for a diesel 1500. Some new spy shots have caught a Ram 1500 single-cab with an odd thing. On this truck, the rear fender happens to be covered with soot, leading us to believe this happens to be a diesel 1500. Left Lane News speculates that under the hood lies a version of the Italian-built VM Motori 3.0L diesel V6 that will power the 2013/2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 3.0L V6 produces 240 HP and over 400 lb-ft. of torque. Source: Left Lane News View full article

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 8, 2012 Ram has some big changes in store for the 2013 Ram 1500 in April, but a new SEC filing reveals some of the juicy details. The Ram will be getting Chrysler's 3.6L Pentastar V6 producing 280 HP. This will replace the current 3.7L V6 producing 210 HP. Also, the Ram will get a new eight-speed transmission. The new eight-speed transmission "reduces fuel consumption by up to 12 percent over our current five-speed transmissions" such as the one in the current Ram, the filing says. The filing also reveals the eight-speed transmission will make its way to the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 2013 mo…

More Options for Ram Tradesman 1500 Posted by Mark Williams | March 6, 2012 It's official: The Ram Tradesman is a huge success, and Ram Truck is expanding the number of models to include more powertrain options and cab configurations. "From the moment we launched it, the Ram 1500 Tradesman was a hit," said Fred Diaz, Ram's president and CEO. "Our new four-door Ram Tradesman models offer the pickup segment's best combination of room for six hard-working adults, V-8 capability and value." The Tradesman is a value-priced package designed to meet the hard-working needs of commercial fleets as well as small businesses. Ram has been successful at expanding the model lineup …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 26, 2012 Previously, if you wanted a top of the line Ram truck, you had to to take the Longhorn edition, cowboy hat and all. Now, Ram is offering a slight-toned down version of Ram called the Ram Laramie Limited. Outside, the Laramie Limited gets body-color front fascia with fog lamps and a matching rear bumper, while the heavy-duty models stick with chrome. Chrome accents adorn mirrors, door handles and side steps. The Limited also drops the usual Hemi, Cummins and Ram badges. Ram 1500 models get 20-inch wheels, while heavy-duty models get 17-inch wheels. Inside, the Laramie Limited gets leather seats with c…
