SPIED: RAM 1500 PLUG-IN HYBRID By Nick Aziz Spy photographers have captured the first photos of the Ram 1500 Plug-In Hybrid undergoing testing in Michigan. As announced earlier this year, Chrysler plans to build 140 of the plug-in pickups and test them in a number of regions across the country. The Plug-In Ram is capable of traveling up to 20 miles using only the power supplied by the 12KWh lithium-ion battery. The truck’s 5.7-liter HEMI V8 takes over when the batteries are depleted. Overall fuel economy is expected to improve by more than 65 percent for average drive cycles. Chrysler is working with battery maker Electrovaya of Mississauga, ON to provide cells for th…

Ram Trucks debuts new 2011 Outdoorsman, RamBox Holster by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Aug 12th 2010 at 3:30PM "We asked Ram Truck customers – boaters, campers, fishing enthusiasts and hunters – what features would they like to see in a truck. They answered 'more capability, more room for my gear and ready to hit the trail. And make it affordable.'" So says Fred Diaz, President and CEO of Chrysler's Ram Truck Brand. And apparently, he's not just blowing smoke. Chrysler's internal research suggests that 62 percent of fullsize pickup truck owners hunt, fish or camp. The automaker's response to these apparent needs is the new 2011 Ram Outdoorsman. Functional upgra…

Undeterred by critics, Ram aims to expand its truck, van lineup Bradford Wernle and Luca Ciferri Automotive News -- July 26, 2010 - 12:01 am ET Some critics chastised Chrysler Group for separating the Ram brand from Dodge. American pickup buyers are devoted to their brands -- Chevy, Ford and Dodge -- and anybody who messes with that is asking for trouble, the critics reasoned. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne responded that the separation gives Dodge room to breathe as a youth- and family-oriented brand. Ram will attack the commercial-van market by rebadging two Fiat vans. Ram will keep the distinctive ram's horns logo that identified Dodges in recent years. Ram …

Ram Trucks go Commercial with New Chassis Cab Variants Monday, May 10, 2010 Chrysler's Ram truck division will begin shipping its 2011 commercial-duty chassis cabs, putting another option out there for big truck buyers and helping to fill out the Ram lineup. Ram's commercial chassis cabs, much like Ford's and GM's, are able to be spec'd out to suit a variety of customer needs: weight classes (3500, 4500, 5500), trim levels (ST, SLT and Laramie), "four cab-to-axle lengths (60, 84, 108 and 120)", engines (5.7 liter Hemi / cleaner, B-20 biodiesel-compatible 6.7 liter Cummins turbo-diesel), and 2- or 4-wheel-drive are all there to be chosen from. The diesel engine gets e…

Filed under: Truck, Chrysler, Dodge, Diesel Chrysler has announced the recall of 186,099 model year 2007-09 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. The voluntary recall has been issued due to an engine defect that could cause the check engine light to come on. In some cases the engine can produce heavy soot that could damage the turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation valve and diesel particulate filter, which are some very expensive components to repair in a modern, high-tech oil burner like the Cummins. To fix the problem, Chrysler wants you to bring your affected truck to a Chrysler dealer for an Electron…

Ram Trucks begin offering spray-in bedliner 04/13/2010, 4:33 PMBY ANDREW GANZ Chrysler’s Ram Trucks division – once a part of Dodge – says that it will begin taking orders for its line of 1500, 2500 and 3500-series Ram trucks with factory-applied spray-on bed liners. A popular aftermarket accessory, the factory spray-on liners will cost $450 from Ram Trucks and will be available on every single model, every cab and every bed length the automaker offers. “Creating a stand-alone brand for Ram Trucks has allowed us to concentrate on how customers are using their trucks and what new features they’d like to see,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck division, in a …

Ram pickup goes bigger than life Alisa Priddle / The Detroit News What has tires that are 17 feet tall and a windshield that's 28 feet wide? A 140-foot tall, 120-foot wide photo of a 2010 Ram heavy-duty pickup that is wrapped around the Chrysler Group headquarters in Auburn Hills. It is part of a marketing campaign that launches this month with a new national advertising campaign after a sluggish sales start for the truck. Chrysler has sold about 38,000 Ram pickups (including light-duty trucks) so far this year, down 18 percent compared with the first three months of 2009. The all-new 2010 Ram heavy-duty went on sale in December and has been slowing building volume. …

In new ads, Ram truck stands alone Bradford Wernle Automotive News -- March 29, 2010 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT -- A new advertising campaign this spring for the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty pickup features the deep, resonant voice of actor Sam Elliott and celebrates the Dodge-like manly American pickup virtues of toughness, utility and durability. But nowhere in the campaign is the word "Dodge" to be found. That's just as Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne wants it. Marchionne is trying to rebuild Chrysler Group around strong brand identities. Last year he decreed that the Ram brand would be separate from Dodge in the same way Fiat and Fiat Professional are separate brands in Eur…

Ram starts heavy-duty marketing for heavy-duty truck Bradford Wernle Automotive News -- March 24, 2010 - 2:30 pm ET DETROIT -- The Ram truck brand is launching its first full-scale advertising and marketing campaign for the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty pickup. The new campaign is part of Chrysler Group's strategy to separate Ram from the Dodge brand. The campaign will emphasize the American virtues of the Ram HD and its can-do capabilities. The ads feature prominently the HD's designation as the Motor Trend magazine Truck of the Year. The campaign was created by The Richards Group, a Dallas advertising agency. Television commercials will feature the deep voice of charact…

Filed under: Concept Cars, Motorsports, Performance, Truck, Dodge, Off-Road Answering the question of whether Mopar's Ram Power Wagon concept is meant to be a competitor to the awe-inspiring Ford SVT Raptor (that'd be a 'no,' it would seem) is a report courtesy of our friends at PickupTrucks.com that Chrysler's go-fast division is also planning to release a long-travel version of the Ram 1500 at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. Adding credibility to Mopar's off-road-ready Ram "research project" is the presence of veteran Baja racer Kent Kroeker, who's KORE company is already the go-to expert for aftermarket Dodge truck goodies (see photo above of his Ram 2500 rac…

Filed under: Spy Photos, Truck, Chrysler, Dodge, Off-Road Dodge Ram Power Wagon spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery We just told you that that Chrysler will be launching four new "Moparized" vehicles later this month, and our spies have already caught one of these new vehicles - the Dodge Ram Power Wagon - on the streets of southeast Michigan. Unlike the Power Wagon that's just now hitting dealers, this is a totally unique package, featuring a single-cab configuration with a short, style-side bed. The huge off-road tires and exaggerated wheel arches lead us to believe that this is Chrysler's answer to the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor (if only in concept form), …

Filed under: Truck, Work, Chrysler, Dodge, Diesel During last summer's bankruptcy proceedings, New Chrysler chose not to contract Cummins to produce a light-duty diesel engine for the its Ram pickup trucks. At a rumored 5.0 liters of displacement, this diesel engine would have been somewhat less powerful but also less expensive and more fuel efficient than the larger 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder diesel, also supplied by Cummins, in heavy duty Rams. Now our friends from PickupTrucks.com report that Dodge may be back in the light-duty diesel game. Joe Veltri, Chrysler vice president of product planning, reportedly said at the NTEA Work Truck Show, "We're in discussions…

Update: Texas high school gets to keep using Ram logo by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Mar 10th, 2010 at 4:28PM Remember a couple weeks back when we told you about Chrysler's improbable legal battle against little Lake Mary High School in Florida? Chrysler's legal team put the smack down on the school for using the Ram logo as its school insignia, and the law jockeys in Auburn Hills, MI were giving the school until June 15 to remove all instances of the logo at a considerable cost to the school district and neighborhood taxpayers. It appears cooler heads have prevailed at Chrysler, as Allpar is reporting that the school and automaker have made an agreement that allows the …

Chrysler legal turns into schoolyard bully over use of Ram logo by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Feb 20th, 2010 at 3:22PM About the same time Chrysler and Fiat executives were running through a marathon eight -hour look into the future with the world's automotive, Pentastar lawyers were working over the principal at Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida. You may be asking yourself what Chrysler lawyers would want with principal Michael Kotkin when, just six months earlier, The Pentastar needed billions of taxpayer dollars to exit bankruptcy. Good question, for sure, but the answer is pretty lame. Moto Bullet reports that Chrysler's legal department was reportedly all…

Filed under: Truck, Work, Dodge 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty - Click above for high-res image gallery Motor Trend magazine's 2010 Truck of the Year competition was an odd one this year. Only four models met MT's criteria of being new or substantially changed from the previous model year. Of those, only two were actual work trucks: the 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty and Toyota Tundra 4.6-liter work truck. The other two contenders, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and Transit Connect, likely won't ever do much of the work that we normally associate with trucks (hauling, towing, etc.). Perhaps that hindered their chances at winning the coveted Golden Calipers, because the truck that did …

Filed under: Truck, Chrysler, Dodge The Dodge Dakota -- as we know it today -- will go away in 2011, but looking at current sales of the mid-size pickup, it may as well be dead already. Chrysler has only sold 10,000 Dakotas this year, with an anemic 663 units cleared in November. But while the Dakota is selling poorly (it's not helped by being too close in price to the much more capable Ram), it doesn't necessarily mean that the enigmatic pickup won't live on in another form. The Detroit News is reporting that Chrysler is contemplating a unibody Dakota to replace the current model. A more fuel efficient car-based platform could yield better efficiency, especially whe…
