So I had to go to a group eligibility review for my UI benefits yesterday along with 6 other people. During the class, someone was asking about temp work and how it affected drawing unemployment etc. To make a long story short, an older lady behind me (probably in her late 50s) was talking about people she knew that worked temp work for Toyota for up to 2-3 years and then being told that there were not being hired. The lady over the class said that its becoming a problem with the Georgetown plant, Toyota will hire a load of temp workers, telling them that they may get hired after the temp work is done, but really they just keep recycling temp workers. People will…

DETROIT - Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it is recalling 75,000 Prius gas-electric hybrid cars because their engines can stall due to an electrical problem. Involved in the recall are some 2004 and early 2005 model year Prius cars. The cars have a gas engine as well as a battery-powered electric motor that can run separately or together to save fuel. In affected vehicles, dashboard warning lights may come on and the gasoline engine shuts down. The vehicle's electric motor will continue operating in a limited capacity, so drivers can steer to the side of the road. The gasoline engine may start working again if the driver restarts the vehicle. Toyota spokesm…

Interesting article. Toyota recalls more vehicles in the U.S. than it sold last year prompting study of Vehicle Development Process. Last year, Toyota recalled 2.38 million vehicles in the U.S. -- more than the 2.26 million vehicles Toyota sold in that year. This statistic resulted in a formal review by Toyota to determine what needed to change. After a two-month review of its product development process, the significant lessons learned include: 1. Engineers in some cases may have rushed out products without conducting enough quality checks, nor building a sufficient number of physical prototypes. 2. Toyota also concluded that it outsourced engineering perhaps mor…

The cash burn rate through 2008 at General Motors, Chrysler and, to a lesser degree, Ford, has been one of the big new stories in the auto business. After a disastrous third quarter, GM was down to about $11 billion and, along with Chrysler, was in danger of having insufficient cash on hand to pay bills at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Toyota has been raking in the profits for ages now and was thought to have up to $90 billion in reserves as recently as a couple of years ago. The other day, however, John McElroy reported that Toyota may be down to only $18.5 billion in cash with rapidly spiraling debts. The company has spent heavily on new factories and new products…

Along with the polls above, lets speculate on 'who gets Toyota's lost market share? .... and, how much (what percent) of market share do they lose? For example, if their share of the market currently is 16% and you think their share will go down to 14%, then they will lose 2% of market share. For percent, assume the period of time is all of calendar year 2010.

The plant, now under construction, is scheduled to come online in 2008. Total investment in the Woodstock facility, Toyota's second plant in Canada, will now amount to about $950 million with a total employment of 2,000 people…

TOKYO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. has developed its third-generation hybrid-system engine, combining gasoline and electric power for a more eco-friendly engine. The smaller engine, which can reduce fuel costs and cut production expenses, will be put into practical use in 2008, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday. The new engine can be installed on most of the automaker's midsize or larger models. Toyota will produce key parts of the new engine in the United States to expand the use of the technology around the world. Toyota installed the first generation hybrid engine in its Prius model in 1997, and the second generation engine, which generated 1.5 t…

Japan's media are reporting that Toyota will launch a luxury sports car for the Lexus brand embracing F1 technology in fall 2008. Toyota to Overtake Ford in 2007 Ford Motor Co. (F.N) expects Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T) to unseat it next year as the second biggest company behind General Motors Corp. (GM.N) in the American car market, a position Ford has held since the 1920s, the New York Times said on its Web site on Thursday. Citing internal Ford projections, the paper says the projections show that company officers believe Ford will permanently fall to third place as soon as January. Ford, which is struggling to restructure itself under a plan called The Way Forward, predicted in September that its market share within two years would bottom out at 14 to 15 percent of the market, making i…

Some Toyota Companies Have No Automotive Connection Link Remember the days when GM owned ElectroMotive, air-conditioning and appliance companies, rental car companies, and probably many others? Are we seeing Toyota's 2006 that will roughly end up being GM's 1957...without the style? At least most of GM's endevors had some sort of tie in to the main business. What does building pre-fab houses have to do with building cars?

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. aims to slash to one year the time to get new models off the drawing board into production, a pace analysts say would be the industry's fastest and could save tens of millions of dollars annually. Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker, already holds the fastest production record, building a car or truck within 24 months of completing a design, said Jeff Liker, an engineering professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who studies Toyota's production methods. Cutting the time to 12 months widens its lead over the industry, which takes on average up to three years to get a model into production. …

Toyota to undertake costly airbag switch fix in Tundra David Shepardson / The Detroit News Link to original article @ DetNews WASHINGTON — Toyota Motor Corp. will spend millions to deactivate front-seat passenger air bag cut-off switches in nearly 160,000 Tundra pickups to avoid having to install a costlier child safety seat anchoring system. The Japanese automaker is taking the action after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week on June 28 rejected Toyota's petition to waive a federal safety regulation that requires most vehicles built after September 2002 and equipped with the cut-off switch to also have a child seat anchor system known as LATC…

Toyota's latest 2006 sales volume projection outstrips its earlier estimate for 8.5 million units, as demand for environment-friendly vehicles such as its Prius hybrid vehicle is increasing globally amid high gasoline prices. Next year Toyota said brisk overseas sales will again lead the firm's global sales expansion. Toyota said it now forecasts global vehicle sales for the group to rise 9 percent to 8.85 million next year, as it moves ever closer to replacing struggling General Motors as the world's largest automaker. The entire Toyota group includes mini-vehicle maker Daihatsu Motor and truckmaker Hino Motors. Challenging GM Toyota owns 51 perce…

I'm sure they were planning this all along since we all know the Big 3 were the only ones blindsided by the rapid increase in oil and gas prices. That's not a knock on Toyota but on those that think GM, Ford and Chrysler were the only ones that didn't see this coming! The fact is, nobody predicted oil and gas prices would rise that quickly and force that rapid of a permanent shift in the market.

You know I have to say I rather like the new Toyota Yaris, particularly the sedan in "S" trim. It's cute, like a baby Camry. It's only got one flaw. Why oh why did Toyota yet again stick the guage pods in the center of the flippin' dashboard?! I mean seriously, it's such a stupid place to put them, you have to look down and away from the road to check them. Everyone gripes about them, I'm sure Saturn won't do it again with the next Ion. It just baffles me why Toyota is so dumb. Oh well.

note: I am only posting this because of the outlandish question at the beginning of the article and as another example of the continuing media obsession with toyota. business week from the article...... "Now, I may receive some heat and email about this, but after almost half a century in the U.S., multi-billions of dollars invested in every state in the union, millions of very satisfied customers, seven factories, thousands of employees, isn't it time to stop calling Toyota an import brand? It may have come from Japan, but it is now an American brand that's almost iconic."

Toyota lags General Motors in second-quarter sales Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ Detroit News TOKYO -- Toyota slipped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter but retained its lead for the first half of the year, numbers showed today, as the two companies jostle for the title of world's biggest automaker. The figures -- and sales growth rates -- indicate that Toyota could overtake GM as the No. 1 automaker, a title the U.S. giant has held for 76 years. Typically, rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales, so that distinction will have to wait until data is tallied for the entire year. Toyota Motor Corp. said…

Toyota: 9.8M Sales in 2008 Toyota set a goal of selling 9.8 million vehicles worldwide in 2008, a 20 percent jump from last year, as it hones in on ailing General Motors' crown as the world's top automaker. The fast-growing Japanese automaker also raised its profit forecast for the quarter to September, saying it was cashing in on robust sales overseas and a weaker yen. Toyota: Moving Forward Slower Remember how Toyota said they are delaying the launch of the Tundra amid quality concerns? Well, that ain't the only one they're going to take their time with. The next Sienna, Solara and Avalon are models that could be subject to longer development time in order for Toyota to ensure they get it right the first time. The extra development time could delay the launches of these products by two to three years. Do you think Toyota decided to take heed of my words? This article is a little over a year old, but it sheds some light into the side of Toyota that is never published. How does the world's most profitable automaker get away with lowering wages after age 51, refusing overtime pay, hiring as few workers as possible while increasing cash reserves (causing higher work-related injuries and suicide rates), and underpaying taxes? Ever heard of Toyota Industries? No, not thatToyota (NYSE: TM). Toyota Industries is the original Toyota, founded in 1926; it spun off the far more familiar automotive division in 1937. Though it trades on the Pink Sheets, Toyota Industries' relatively low valuation and lucrative partial interest in its more famous offspring could make it a Foolish opportunity. What began as a company to make looms for textiles now manufactures forklifts, cars, and auto parts. The Rav4 and Yaris are both manufactured by Toyota Industries, but bear the Toyota Motors logo. Confused yet? It gets better: Toyota Motors owns 23.5% of Toyota Industries, and Toyota Industries owns 5.55% of Toyot…
