The leaders of General Motors and Ford say this summer's employee discount incentives worked well, but automakers can't continue offering huge discounts. Ford chief executive Bill Ford says such incentives aren't healthy for the industry and aren't sustainable. GM's Rick Wagoner says he doesn't regret GM's starting the incentive war in June but says it hurt profits and helped Asian automakers, which typically have lower incentives. Incentives have gone as high as $4,500 per vehicle or more. A Merrill Lynch analyst says the average incentive in September was $2,600 per vehicle, but $1,600 for Asian brands.

General Motors Corp. and workers at its assembly plant in suburban Moraine have reached a tentative contract agreement that would put the facility in position to build a new generation of sport utility vehicles, a GM official said Wednesday. I have seen Hyundai do something similar. Hyundai also say things like fuel efficient on their SUV ads without mentioning what the miles per gallon are. GM has picked up the habit of putting dress up covers on their engines which succeed only to:- (1) Make the build quality look cheap -- even Hyundai has nicer and higher quality (appearing) covers. (2) Make some otherwise very good looking engines and manifolds look like a Rubbermaid trashcan. This is the latest rendition... can anyone say that the "covered" engine (below) looks sexier, higher quality or more advanced? Jeez... enough of these garbage can lids already. They are not worth $0.05. How about spending the money on say a suede leather cover for the owner's manual (or whatever) instead!

UAW spokesman Paul Krell said that the UAW had notified locals by e-mail that an agreement is possible. A source inside GM says it is "very confident" but added that the automaker could impose unilateral benefits cuts this week if talks fail. Krell said GM has not raised the possibility of unilateral cuts in talks. A spokesman for GM declined comment.

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. is recalling 804,000 full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of potential brake problems, federal safety regulators said Tuesday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said unwanted application of the antilock brake system in some vehicles can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed braking and may result in a crash. Vehicles affected by the recall include the Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado pickups and the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs. The GMC Sierra pickup and Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are also affected. All 804,000 vehicles trucks are from the 1999-2002 model years, NHTSA said.…

Production on the current GMT800's will "wind down" and GMT900 production of pick-ups will begin. The first of the models will be the crew cabs, with heavy duty sales beginning later in 2007.
