* Since late April when we first learned my sister is pregnant with their 2nd child, my nephew has been adamant that he is having a little sister. When asked if a baby brother was OK, he simply replied, "I'm having a little sister!" Last week, my nephew's wishes were confirmed ... my little sister is having a girl! My niece should arrive in late November. My nephew is THRILLED! Being an uncle the last 3+ years has been awesome. I originally honed my "corrupting skills" for friends' kids, but I've perfected them with my nephew. When I was in the hospital last week, he brought the "Monte Carlo" bear (that I bought him) to help me get out of the hospital quicker.... …

I've said every so often that I love the Pontiac GTO; although I actually fell in love with the Monaro first, because I was in OZ when I first laid eyes upon it, and was then lucky enough to take one for a (slightly illegal) spin. Now, I should have the means to pick one up used, especially with Canada's currency parity with the US Dollar. However, my problem is, is that I have learned that for whatever reason, the Government won't allow people to import the GTO into my country. So before I give the agency responsible for the regulations a call, I was wondering if anyone knows why the GTO isn't allowed into Canada, or even better, if anyone knows some way that will le…

For the 1971 model year, Chevrolet introduced the handsome, economical, fun to drive Vega in 4 bodystyles: a two-door sedan, two-door hatchback, two-door panel delivery, and two-door wagon. The stylish little car looked like the perfect little brother to the second-generation Camaro. At first blush, it was a breakthrough, (along with the venerable Pinto and unique Gremlin) a uniquely American response to the charming VW Beetle and early Toyota and Datsun subcompacts. It should have been a contender... it could have ensured GM's market supremacy, already enjoyed in the mid-and full-size classes, in the burgeoning subcompact market. But a couple of major issues killed …

So tonight I was walking back to my apartment/dorm with my friends and we were all drunk, and while we were walking I noticed how much better cars look when you're drunk. First, a '95 or so Camaro, which looked really low and sleek. I was like "holy $h! that Camaro looks awesome," then we went past a G6 coupe that looked freaking amazing. It looked like it was some super-sleek concept car or something. Yeah, that's my rant for the night. I'm still "under the influence" right now, but I'm basically sober.

This idea has come up in the past, and it's a good one that has credibility to it... With this being said, I'd like to ask the following: What would C&G members think of holding an additional competition, known as the C&G Design Competition, which would feature and allow submissions from all artists of all backgrounds, computer-aided or with pen and paper?

"You know J.R. is making deals" __ Hank Williams Jr __ 'This Ain't Dallas' ~2 months ago, I was ~110 pounds b/c of not eating or sleeping. Still not sleeping, but starting to eat. With that, I've had a bit more energy (& 'fight') to start working on some projects & found this note written by a friend ~9 years ago: "My friend, if I could give you one gift, I would give you the ability to see yourself as others see you. Then you would realize what a truly special person you are." Made me smile, but my hunch is most of us can't see ourselves the way others seem to.... "Tough times" make that harder. While family & friends are discussing engagement…

Dudes, I'm getting a Dell. Yep, Windows has retained a user. It's a Dimension E510 desktop. Important specs: -Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 -Pentium D Processor 930 (Dual Core), 3.0 GHz -1 GB DDR2 SDRAM -250GB Serial ATA HD -128 PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon X300 SE video card -17" Analog flat panel monitor In short, it beats the hell out of my current rig. I was considering an iMac but this deal looked too good to pass up (plus, I'm curious about Windows Vista). I don't think I want a Mac as my main computer just yet. Maybe I'll get a MacBook in the future. It should be arriving next week.

I don't know if any of you have seen this before... But Penn and Teller have a show on Showtime called "Bull$h!" where they debunk popular social assertions, the supernatural etc.. well they devoted a half hour to environmental hysteria. So it occurred to me that I never told you guys about my new job. If you hadn't been watching last season, I lost my job with Direct Energy in 2019, my last day was December 18th. I was told at the beginning of November that it was coming, just didn't have an exact date. Direct Energy paid me a healthy severance of 7 months of salary, plus bonus, plus a medical stipend. After 13 years, I was ready to go and I can't be mad at them for laying me off. In the ensuing months, Direct Energy laid off another 6,000 in June and then another 7,000 in August. They've also been sold out to a competitor. So I think I got out just in time. My initial plan when I found …

Is there any of you here? I'm looking to get a keyboard. Some guys play drums, some guys play guitar... Me, I want to play piano. Always wanted to, but lately this feeling has been increased for some unknown reason. I figure, being that time of year, it'd make a nice gift for myself. I just wondering what I should look for. There are many of them out there and I have no idea what ones are good, bad, complex, or simple. I'd say the maximum price for one would be $200. Any suggestions, if anyone here actually knows any more than I do?

So, despite previous worries that the Astra wasn't going to hold up, it seems it may be here to stay for a while. At the moment, it's still having random issues with the fuel gauge and range readouts going out of synch (further investigation doesn't point to a weak fuel pump, but rather issues with the CANBUS controller), but otherwise it hasn't stalled or quit since having the camshaft sensors replaced. I realized some time ago that I didn't want to spend much money on the car, however there are "attention" areas that I'm going to deal with in the near future on the car. First, I've realized driving a car like the Astra makes it an absolute hell to drive at night when s…

Yesterday evening I decided that, given my hatred for my hateful old Astra hatchback has grown to burning new heights, I would pay a visit to Kentucky's largest independent auto auction — the Kentucky Auto Sales Pavilion, or KASP for short — located 30 miles north of me in Lexington and try to take home a beater or project car for less than $1,000 dollars. Here, it was certainly an obtainable concept and less of a challenge based on late Sunday night programs I had watched; numerous Clinton Administration-era vehicles seemed to cross the auction block here rarely ringing up at more than $1,500. It also seemed far less droll than spending countless future weeks of sifting …

From 1957 through 1991, the Mercury Colony Park reigned supreme as the biggest and sometimes most expensive vehicle in the Mercury lineup. During the early years it was a hybrid of sorts, often sharing its platform with whatever full-size Ford sedan was in production at the time while occasionally plucking engines or suspensions from the Lincoln catalog. After 1978, the Colony Park's fate was forever tied to its Marquis sedan brother and the Ford cousins, no longer did it have equipment ties to Lincoln. For 1992, the big Ford and Mercury sedans were redesigned to the new Aero look introduced ten years earlier on the Tempo/Topaz and made into a best seller with the 198…

A few weks ago my buddy Ross introduced me to this awsome website. This guy calls himself Mister Jalopy and he's awsome. Almost like a modern day hero in a comic book kind of way. Wacked out and scatter brained but in the coolest way possible. Really spend some time and poke around the site. He's a madman. I need to have a website like this... no real specific topic just a bunch or random cars I work on and "useless" junk I collect that I consider treasure, documented roadtrips to "exotic" locations like some hidden treasure speedshop. Seriously, check it out. One of the best websites I have ever seen! http://www.hooptyrides.com/

I'm thinking about attending a solo autocross some weekend with the LS. Apparently Des Moines SCCA does them on a regular basis. I think it'd be fun as heck to do, but I don't know where to start and since I have no experience on a track, don't know if I'm going to make myself look like a fool. How welcoming are these events to novices? Am I going to be the only one with a stock sedan while everyone else has a tricked out sports car? How hard are these events on your vehicle?

Want to talk politics with your neighbour? The Economist I WAS in Seattle on Monday, chatting to Pat Murakami, a lady who runs a small computer repair shop and does a little political agitating on the side. She’s concerned about her neighbourhood, a vibrant area full of Vietnamese shops and veiled women waiting at bus stops. A few years ago, the city tried to declare parts of it “blighted”. That would have enabled it to seize people’s homes and hand the land to private developers. Mrs Murakami started a group called “Many Cultures, One Message”, to rally her neighbors to object to the proposed bulldozing. She prevailed. Or at least, the plan to knock down chunks of he…

Hey guys, I've been using my parents' PC, which is infested with the occasional pop-up, and it's driving me insane. The pop-ups are related to whatever website I'm viewing. If I'm on a site about, say, internships, then there will be a Yahoo! Jobs pop-up ad. Sometimes if I click on a link from a Google search, it will automatically take me to a different, spam website. If I click "back" and try again, it's usually okay. It seems like Firefox is working overtime to close these pop-ups - the uppermost "bar" turns light blue, and I have to click on the browser to continue scrolling or typing - though several still come through. It's annoying, and I'm concerned about m…

I'm "angered/frustrated/saddened by domestic violence" is what I posted as a status on Facebook a day or so after I was told by a good friend of mine that another friend had been killed by her husband. I've known Amy for ~12 years. She had a heart of gold, and the world has lost a wonderful person. This is yet another "senseless act" ... and, to me, another reminder of how fragile life is, how much we need to "stick together", and how much violence doesn't particularly solve anything, but just adds more pain to the situation.... http://www.indystar.com/article/20100325/NEWS02/3250494/Two-die-after-Grant-Co.-standoff Cort | 36swm.IL | "Mr Monte Carlo"."Mr Road Trip"…

I scampered out of my room headed up the steps, instinctively turning on the stairway light .... and, wowa, ... light. So, I turned back into my room ... and flipped some of the circuit breakers and the entire house had power again. Next door neighbor heard it, too. We believe it was a lightning strike. Internal combustion versus battery electric. The article is about dealership markups and the Escalade but brings up several interesting ideas that would be nice if we could discuss. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a39122714/dealers-added-an-average-of-728-to-every-new-cars-msrp-in-2021/

like for example.... "No Particular Place To Go" Ridin' along in my automobile My baby beside me at the wheel I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile My curiosity runnin' wild Cruisin' and playin' the radio With no particular place to go. Ridin' along in my automobile I'm anxious to tell her the way I feel, So I told her softly and sincere, And she leaned and whispered in my ear Cuddlin' more and drivin' slow, With no particular place to go. No particular place to go, So we parked way out on the Kokomo The night was young and the moon was bold So we both decided to take a stroll Can you imagine the way I felt? I couldn't unfasten her safet…

If so: Please answer 3 questions! This query is due to several comments within the last few weeks or so that those of us in Chicagoland (and nearby states) really "ought to get together" ... key words, "ought to". So many times this ends up being well-intentioned "talk". Yes, some gatherings have been successful, but it seems the bulk of 'em either never get off the ground or end up with people disappointed at the lack of ACTUAL attendance/interest.... And, yes, I KNOW "life happens" and that driving distance is a factor for some.... BUT ... after a successful gathering of 2 groups [heart-related, of which I'm a member of both] for a late lunch today (Saturday, M…

Baseball is in the last quarter of the season and it is shaping up to be a very close race to the post season with 18 teams being within seven games of their division lead. I'm a rabid Mets fan and am hoping to see my team make the playoffs for the second year in a row. Here are my pridictions for the end of the regular season AL Divsions- East - Boston Central - Detroit West - Angels Wild card - Seattle NL Divisions- East - Mets Central - Milwaukee West - Diamond Backs Wild Card - Phillies That's what I think the post season will look like but a lot can happen in these last 5 weeks of the season.

We're all on this site because we've been touched by GM one way or another. My question is: How so? Share your experiences with GM here. Only one requirement....keep things family-friendly, mmmkay? I'll get the ball rolling: Some of my GM memories: When we (my sisters and I) would visit my grapdparents in the Bronx for the weekend, we'd either be riding around in a 1973 chocolate-brown Monte Carlo or a 1955 Bel Air hardtop. The Monte was in pristine condition, the Bel Air was much less so having been stolen so many times. For both cars, my grandmother made clear plastic seat covers (think "Everybody Loves Raymond") that you would usually stick…

First, take a G6, deform the roofline to make it bland and make the taillights look ugly. Slap on a Vauxhall (or to-be Saturn) grille on the front. Add H badges to taste. Ta-da! Didn't know Honda loves GM so much these days... I just see so many similar things.

So I'm traveling down a suburban road, when an F-150 makes a right turn from a side road, with no turn signal, and swings way over into my lane coming toward me. She barely makes it back into her lane as I get to her. I look over and she's just smilin' and jackin' her jaws on a CELL PHONE, completely oblivious to the task at hand, seemingly, and that is... DRIVING HELLO. Freakin' birdbrain individuals out there, I'm tellin' ya. And the laws banning cell phone use while driving will not work until someone has an accident and it is proven they were using their phone at the time. What sort of alignment of the stars has to happen for a police officer to actually be there…

There is one for sale nearby. It looks like its all origional. From some time warp, just pushed out of storage. Its origional paint, origional interior. It does have some lower rust, not real bad at all. Cant speak for the undercarriage which must also be rusty. The interior is great except for the drivers back. Seat bottom looked great. Its licenced and inspected since July so apparently the brakes and all is working, so maybe the underneath is not too bad ? I just looked quickly at it from the outside and have not talked to anyone. I have a feeling its been in a barn or something, covered up because the old paint just looks like old paint, not trashed. The price is…

Do you have any collectibles? Basically anything that could be worth something... especially as the years go bye. Anything from automobiles to scale models of automobiles or even old articles and stuff like that. If so, share it... I happen to have a few things. The first is a relatively good looking copy of a Popular Mechanics magazine from 1954. Again, it's in good condition considering its age. I know I have magazines that are less then 10 years old in worse condition than it... :P I also have another thing that is in damn good condition. It's a Radio Shack remote control Porshe 928. I forgot what year it's from but it hasn't been used... ever. It still has …

Riots In France

Obviously unless you've been living under a rock you are well aware of the riots going on in Paris, France due to a new law being passed. It would allow companies to fire young workers for no reason at all. It's clear to see the global economy is set to wreak havoc on people 18-30 over the next two to three years as more countries pass such laws.

Does anybody know anything about Aerospace Engineering? There are a few guys at my work (auto engineers) who are telling me to try to get into the aerospace industry once I'm done with college. How do you guys feel about that? Do you know anything about that industry to lend me information on?

Yeah... have fun without me, bitches! Never again will I come back here! Or I will... IDK. I won't be around for much of this upcoming week. I'll be at my grandparent's camping out in their camper while trying to sell my 300EX over there. Hopefully I'll sell it, being along a major highway (Rt 322). That and it'll be listed in the trade book. It better sell... but I have a feeling my back luck will continue. Either way, camping out will be refreshing. I've wanting to do it lately... even if it is in the backyard of my grandparent's house. Plus, my grandpa has some work for me to do, and I'm money hungry... Alright, tonight I'll be going over and having my 300 haul…

I'm not much of a wine drinker, but I know people who are. My tastes lean toward dessert wines that taste more like candy than proper wine. I do, however, enjoy a good wine tour. Finding local craftspeople who can turn grapes into interesting potent potables, hearing their stories, and drinking their concoctions is a great day out. In order to share this experience, I wrote a little piece on our latest wine tour. Not many people think of Pennsylvania as wine country (or even HAVING a wine industry), but it exists. Take a few minutes to read the whole article below and post some comments here on your thoughts. Even if you're not near this region, I'm sure there are winer…

The 'Camino has a kink in the hood from someone forcing it closed instead of oiling the hinges. It kinked at the built-in factory "fault line" . How reliably can that be fixed? I think I'm going to use the hood from the parts car instead, but if that one is too rough I might want to fix the original. I'm just concerned that it will be too weak to stay straight after being fixed. Watcha think?

Cuba to cut 500,000 gov't workers, reform salaries AP Cuba announced Monday it will cast off at least half a million state workers by early next year and reduce restrictions on private enterprise to help them find new jobs — the most dramatic step yet in President Raul Castro's push to radically remake employment on the communist-run island. Castro suggested during a nationally televised address on Easter Sunday that as many as 1 million Cuban workers — about one in five — may be redundant. But the government had not previously laid out specific plans to slash its work force, and the speed and scope of the coming cutbacks were astounding. Cuba's official work force is…

EDIT: Now it appears GM says they are coming to the EXPO, but the U of I's site that lists the companies coming doesn't have GM... maybe they just don't know what table they're putting GM at yet. This is a long ways away, but I might be able to get an internship for the summer... there are a lot of companies coming to the engineering job EXPO at U of I, but the only two automotive companies interested in freshman mechanical engineers (what I'm in) are Ford and Rolls-Royce. I think Rolls would be rather boring, so Ford would be my only chocie if I want an internship in the car business (of course there are like 93 companies interested in ME freshmen, so I could get somet…

I found these funny... Facts about Mr. T 1. Every time a bell rings, Mr. T pities a fool. 2. Mr. T speaks only when necessary. His main form of communication is folding his arms and slowly shaking his head. Regardless of the situation, he is always understood. 3. Mr. T once punched Chuck Norris at the exact moment that Norris roundhouse-kicked Mr. T in the chest. The result was the 80’s. 4. Twenty-three. That’s the number of fools Mr. T has pitied in the time it has taken you to read this sentence. 5. Mr. T does not break wind. He destroys it. 6. Mr. T ended the civil rights movement by getting on a bus … all the caucasian people moved to the back. 7. Mr. T i…
