July 7th, 2013 - State of the Site This will be less a "State of the Site" and more a "State of Drew". As you know, I haven't been around as much lately. Work has kept me on the road all year up until recently. From mid-February till late May I was battling constant colds and exhaustion to the point where my doctor told me that I had to knock off my work schedule or face more serious illness. From mid-May till the end of this week, I have been missing two of my staff at my day job who have been out for medical reasons (lucky them!). Since Mid-July, my work travel is done until end of August, so I finally have had the chance to catch up on things at home and recupera…

I really think we need to have a more active front page. it's already set up in a blog style. Why can't we simply get the Auto stories from the major news sources posted in the forums and then linked to from the front page. Or have articles in the forums linked to the front page with a headline, post snippet and small photo? I would love to do this. I emailed FLY about it, but I think he may not be checking his mail. I am currently not working and have plenty of time on my hands. This would be something I would love to do, which would really help C&G stay competitive with other auto news and discussions sites. What do you guys think?

I posted this on another thread and was told by Northie to post it here. Most of the graphics on the site don't appear, instead I get the dreaded red 'x.' It happens to most of the pictures and all of the icons, even the smilies. Does anyone else have this problem?

it's completely underwhelming compared to the CTS Coupe... Officially Official: 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLC Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2008 CLC-Class, the Euro-market successor to the now-defunct C-Class Sports Coupe. Well, we should clarify that. It's not completely defunct in that its architecture has been carried over for the new car, meaning the CLC does not share underpinnings with the new-gen C-Class. Still, Mercedes boasts that the car features 1,100 "newly-developed or enhanced" components, including the direct steering system introduced on the freshened SLK. The changes are intended to give the car a different feel than its predecessor. At fi…

I clearly have been away too long and the inmates have been running the asylum. I have absolutely had it with the bickering on this site about political crap and bigotry. My tolerance for such bull crap is down to 2% and the battery light is flashing. I am -->this close<-- to pulling the plug on the whole site because of all of the people who bring non-car dramatic crap onto my car website and can't even show an ounce of human decency towards each other and other human beings. Talk about cars.... that's it! I am watching. To anyone who would bring political or bigoted crap to my website, I have a message from the Romulans for you...

Japanese auto makers surpass GM in North America Tue Apr 4, 12:07 PM ET Japanese automakers overtook US car giant General Motors in North American car and truck production in 2005 and all signs point to Asian dominance of the industry soon, a report showed. Faced with growing losses in market share, GM reduced its production in the region to 4.6 million vehicles in 2005 while Japanese automakers boosted their assembly plant output in the region by 12 percent to 4.8 million cars and light trucks last year. It is the first time on record Japanese car and truck manufacturers have surpassed the biggest of the so-called Big Three US automakers in North America, according …

As some of you have noticed, I did a software update last week to the latest version of the software. In addition to more ways to upvote and downvote, the Clubs feature is now open. If you've ever wanted to run your own car club forum, now is your chance. People who open clubs become the moderator of their own club automatically. For the moment, I have no established rules for clubs except: No Adult Content. When in doubt, keep it out. No Clubs about current or former members. I will not allow cyberbullying on here. This does not mean I will not institute additional rules for clubs in the future. I created a sample club that I will update a…

I notice you've sub-divided the "Other Guys" forum. I liked it better the other way since you could see all the news in one bite, without having to enter each subforum. Not only that, but the purpose of the subdivision really makes no sense. One can ascertain the company the post deals with by the thread title. I haven't been here long (and since in the migration, my account was eliminated, I appear to be even newer) but thought you might like a little feedback on the change. Tony

Moderators need to curb their right to alter or delete posts. Within the last few months, Ninety Eight Regency posted one of his photo parades. I commented on the setting in one photo and said it "looked very Houston TX" (which is where he happens to be from...a metropolis of 4 or so million people). Ninety Eight provided us with some humor in the grandstanding exit/re-entry also exhibited by a few others on here so I get a kick out of such "self-importance." Many people comment on surroundings or backgrounds in people's posted photos. Being that I design buildings, this is reflexive to me. Yet the post was gone. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure ou…

AW Press drew a laugh with a recommendation he offered for anyone depressed about the current state of affairs in the industry. "Do me a favor and visit the maternity ward of any hospital," he said. "Every one of those little blue and pink baskets represents 14 or 15 purchase cycles." - Toyota is benefiting from what he termed a tailwind. But Press pointed out that the industry is cyclical, and Toyota's fortunes could decline, too. "We have no interest in GM declining. We have no interest in becoming number one," he said. "GM is a global icon. They support the economy, and they represent the strength of the industry. There is no joy in the difficulties they're having…

As most of you may have noticed, none of you have yet received your promised prizes for winning competitions. Please know you haven't been forgotten about. Our C&G account is very low because of recent purchases of spy photography as well as the big down payment we had to put down for two years of hosting. Because of this, I'm pretty much paying for these prizes out of my pocket. The prizes are - as somewhat stated - going to be small trinkets, things like keychains, toy diecasts, etc. Nothing like an actual car or something grandiose, but a little relevant prize nonetheless that we hope you'll appreciate. Rest assured again that winners will receive prizes! Just g…

I don't know if you consider other GM fan websites as competition, but I wanted to alert you to "Help Fix GM." To go directly to the website, click here. At this time, there's not a lot of content, but mostly a request for ideas to, as the name says, help fix GM. Would you ever consider a merger between C&G, GMI, and Help Fix GM? (Hey, if nowadays people suggest that GM merge with anyone and everyone... ) Just think of how you could reduce the cost of bandwidth with united buying power. Just think of how you could triple the number of complainers. Or silly posts like this one.

Not sure if I am overlooking this or not, while I like the way posts now show up in this new updated version, I do have a challenge in getting to the Forum list of threads as from the home page I do not find where to go to get the forum list. Anyone want to explain why that after I post something I get a blank screen (it looks like that after I make a post, the site tries to redirect me to the main forum index, rather than the thread I posted in) or why that after I edit something the whole post goes blank? Introduction By Mike Hudson Email Date posted: 12-19-2005 Every office has one. You know, the employee who has seemingly done no wrong since coming onboard. Every decision he makes turns into profits and every review comes with a healthy raise or promotion attached. At first, the Golden Boy is loved by all. But after a few years, the mountains of praise start to annoy coworkers. Soon resentment sets in. His nicer attributes fade into the past while his flaws start to irritate you. So when a worthy challenger emerges from the ranks, it's no surprise people are pulling for the new guy. And so it is with our latest matchup between front-wheel-drive fou…

I'm pleased to announce that C&G's own GM Economy and Efficiency Guide has been updated to reflect the latest federal information for the 2007 model year. While the vast majority of models are included, a few (such as the Acadia and OUTLOOK) are pending at this time. We will add the data as soon as it becomes available. New to the guide are Marque Averages, which tells how economical and efficient the division is as a whole. The number is derived from simply adding the city, highway, average, and emissions figures and dividing those respective totals by the number of vehicle engine choices. Enjoy, as we hope this - along with our updated GM Vehicle Safety Guide - wi…

First from Autoblog: BMW switching to turbocharged M cars After two decades of normally-aspirated high-revving engines shoehorned under the hoods of its M cars, BMW is changing direction and will begin to offer direct-injection turbocharged powerplants in its future high-performance flagships. The German automaker is blaming tough environmental emission standards and the soaring manufacturing costs of the specialty-built V8 and V10 engines found in today's M3, M5, and M6 models for its decision. We also suspect the fact that both Audi and Mercedes-Benz have successfully offered torque-laden forced-induction powerplants for years on their performance models may have s…

Just a couple suggestions. One would be to place the PM box in the upper right corner like it used to be. Everytime I get a PM, I get forced to go to the User CP page to read the full PM where before I could click the PM and it would just link me straight to the new message I received (inside the User CP). Also, I noticed on cobaltss.net that they have a very useful drop-down menu in the top left corner of all the forum pages where you can skip right to the forum you want to go to. It's really nice to use sometimes instead of going to the forum home page, then searching for the right forum. Damn it, I'm getting lazy.

Japanese cash for clunkers program draws criticism 12/10/2009, 4:24 PMBY MARK KLEIS Detroit’s Big Three automakers are voicing concern over Japan’s version of the cash for clunkers program, which declares virtually all imported vehicles ineligible for government rebates. The Big Three have taken their concerns to the U.S. Government in a call for action. Japan has recently launched its own version of the cash for clunkers program in an effort to spur its economy and shore up struggling new cars sales which are down 34.7 percent from their peak. However, unlike the American cash for clunkers initiative, Japan’s program specifically outlaws the eligibility of imported ve…

As a reader for a while now, I thought I'd post to say that the site is almost unnavigatable. Problem one is that everything spawns a new tab. I'd really be nice if everything kept to the same tab like the old forum did. It's nearly impossible to browse anymore, since I have to pick a forum (new tab), pick a subforum (new tab), then I can read threads in the same tab. To go to the next bit of reading, it's close, close, new tab, new tab. It's getting to point where it's almost impossible to see the great content on the site. That kind of leads me to problem two, though I suspect if problem one were solved, problem two would vanish. When I co…

Some of you may have noticed the server struggling today. I think I may have just found and fixed the issue. One of the server log files had grown to 90 GB in size. I killed that log file and that seems to have eased the burden on the server. Search is still indexing due to a patch I applied earlier trying to fix the issue. Once that finishes up, we should be back to normal.

We've toyed with the idea of an automotive Wiki here for a number of years. Due to the way this website software works, I don't think a full reference wikipedia is feasable. However, what do you think about an automotive advertising wiki/database to collect current and vintage material? Let me know in the poll. Europe could be largest global market for electric cars Luca Ciferri Automotive News Europe -- October 28, 2010 09:25 CET TURIN – Europe could become the largest global market for battery-powered electric vehicles by far, predict analysts J. D. Power and Associates. But EV volumes will still be lower than some automakers' expectations. By 2020, EV sales in Europe could reach 742,020 units, or 3.1 percent of 23.8 million sales predicted for that year, according to a report by California-based J. D. Power. China would be the second EV largest market with unit sales of 332,775 and a 1.9 percent market share. The United States would be third in term of unit sales, 107,…

Car News briefs: Cross Lander Ute expected this year AutoWeek | Published 01/17/06, 4:33 pm et Free pass for Cross Lander Importers of the inexpensive Romanian built Cross Lander 244X sport/ute won a three-year exemption from federal airbag requirements. Cross Lander won the exemption through May 2008 because the vehicle as initially configured weighed more than 5500 pounds, which would have excluded it from the requirement. However, an engine supply problem forced a powertrain switch that reduced the weight below the 5500-pound threshold. As a result, the company requested and won the airbag waiver and plans to move ahead with sales of the vehicle in the United Stat…

I wanted to announce a few site changes that will be coming ahead of their deployment. I do not have exact dates on when they will be deployed, but I want you to be aware of them. Most of these changed revolve around new EU data privacy laws and while we are completely US based, 25% - 30% of our traffic will sometimes come from Europe. So while we are not strictly bound by these rules, I have decided to put the rules into practice anyway as they represent industry standard going forward. 1. Already Deployed - Guest Cookie policy - Guests will have to consent and acknowledge that we place a cookie on visits to the website. 2. Coming Soon - A new privacy policy …

Hi! Not a big deal, but please correct the typo on the homepage. In the list of hot topics and other news, Enclave is spelled Encalve. Thank you.

I am currently tracking an issue on our server that is causing the server to crash unexpectedly and then reboot multiple times in succession. You may see this manifest itself in an SQL error page or the site not loading at all, but it stops after about 30 minutes. It is not the dreaded database issues we have experienced in the past. Just letting you know I am aware of the issue and working on it.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...photopanel..1.* The problem with most Japanese cars here is that they're dull, soulless, and generic. But after seeing tons of truly weird and different cars in Asia this past winter, I actually wish they would import some of this lost-in-translation, automotive-anime, Japanese subculture madness here. Modern cars in the US are all pretty much the same, dictated by certain car norms, shapes, and functions... to begin with, why do all cars have to be symmetrical? Why must luxury car interiors be covered in leather and wood? Anyway, I really like the Cube, especially in that color, even though…

Sometimes I get tired of sigs, so I thought that rather than just turning them off, maybe we could add a feature that LS1GTO.com has. Your sig appears after your first post in a topic, but after your first post, your sig does not appear. Thoughts?

What is going on with the edit function this afternoon? I try to edit one of my posts, I click on the "edit" button, but instead it goes into "quote" mode, and then there IS NO EDIT BUTTON showing? Is this somehow normal? Doesn't seem normal.

BMW has done the (inexplicable) inevitable, expanding its M treatment from cars to SUVs (or Sports Activity Vehicles in BMW parlance). The New York Auto Show marks the world debut of the X5 M and X6 M, and in typical M fashion, the high riders get substantially more power than their more pedestrian variants. Both vehicles get uprated versions of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that debuted in the X6 last year. Power goes from a mere 400 hp up to 555 hp in M form with torque swelling from 450 to 500 lb-ft. While the increase in twist doesn't seem like all that much, BMW is claiming it's produced from 1,500 all the way to 5,650 rpm. The 4.4-liter V8 is direct injected …

Cheers and Gears gets social Now you can share you favorite posts on C&G with people in your social network. Doing this helps increase Cheers and Gears's visibility in the search engines and helps generate traffic to the website. Also, on many high interest articles, I will place a "Vote this up on Reddit" and "Digg This!" link that you can click and increase votes for our website on Reddit and Digg. I'd guess the 2008 Buick Enclave . It certainly is one of GM's most anticipated products of that model year, and many would like to see the interior of the production vehicle. I suppose I could compare the shown image to the uncovered vehicle at the car shows, but I'll skip that. Buick Enclave! * If so, Flybrian, remember to spell it E-n-c-l-a-v-e . P.S. - If I'm wrong, it'd be the first time... in the last five minutes. Guess I've run out of smilies . [ EDIT ] They should have covered up those rims .

Friday, December 23, 2005 Print this Comment on this E-mail this Auto sector driving Slovak recovery Matt Reynolds / Reuters TRNAVA, Slovakia - The closure of Slovak utility vehicle maker TAZ after the fall of Communism in 1989 put the brakes on the local economy of the town of Trnava. But 16 years later, the auto industry is once again the driving force for the town's 70,000 residents. France's PSA Peugeot Citroen will start production at a state-of-the-art assembly plant next year, eventually creating more than 5,000 jobs. Subcontractors are expected to supply another 1,500 jobs within two years. The plant is expected to have annual capacity of 450,000 ca…

Several other websites have a link to be able to allow a user to go back to previous posts, instead of having to search thru topic titles.. In some cases you may not even remember the topic title, but would like to go back to it, and see what responses may have been added. Another fast connection link needed is current topics, instead of, again, having to search thru the whole format.

2008 BMW M3 Coupe being marked up to $100,000 Link to AutoBlog We've been getting reports from all over that the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe has begun to arrive in U.S. dealerships. Dealers, however, have also begun taking advantage of the high interest in these Bavarian über coupes by marking up the price. Since we couldn't just take everyone's word for the extreme mark ups, we had to wait until someone surfaced with proof, which came today. Dragtimes.com is hosting an image of a brand spanking new M3 sitting in an unidentified California dealer with a window sticker displaying the car's $70,720 MSRP plus a $30,000 mark up. The extra monies demanded by the dealer is labeled…
