With sales of new vehicles slowing down, automakers find themselves making tough decisions in terms of production and jobs. Later this week, General Motors will temporally shut down their Delta Twp, MI plant (home to Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse) for a month to retool to make way for the next-generation models. When production begins back up on June 12th, there could be more than 600 workers without a job due to the third shift being cut. The Lansing State Journal reports that back in March, close to 1,100 workers were possibly going to be laid off. Workers were notified about this via a WARN notice (an advisory that is required to be sent out to workers unde…

TOM WALSH Auto merger would limit the bleeding BY TOM WALSH • FREE PRESS COLUMNIST • November 4, 2008 Forget about whether General Motors Corp. acquiring Chrysler LLC makes any sense. Don't get caught up in the semantic debate about whether federal intervention in the fates of Chrysler, GM and Ford Motor Co. is a bailout, a rescue or descent into a socialist hellhole. The drama over Detroit's future, which resumes after a brief intermission for today's election, boils down to two words: damage control... http://www.freep.com/article/20081104/COL0...1014/BUSINESS01 After the dust from the General Election settles I expect "President Obama" (fingers crosse…

Trojan Horse At GM's Door by Rick Ackerman Thursday, Dec 08 What the heck could GM investors be thinking? A surge in the stock late yesterday cut the DJIA’s losses nearly in half, but you’d have to be a cynic to believe the celebration was warranted. The news that caused GM shares to rise 2.9 percent in mere minutes concerned the growing likelihood that Kirk Kerkorian, a 9.9% stakeholder, will get a seat on GM’s board. Kerkorian’s hatchet-man, Jerome York, managed to squeeze impressive tribute from Chrysler when he was installed on that company’s board a decade ago, but the auto manufacturers were on the threshold of a cyclical upswing then that eventually turned…

'07 looking up for GM Automaker will pump another $1B into products as cost cutting continues Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News Link to Original Article @ DetNews The upbeat picture General Motors Corp. executives painted for Wall Street on Thursday is a far cry from a year ago when company leaders were scrambling to explain a disastrous $10.6 billion loss. If predictions for 2007 prove true, the world's largest automaker will shave losses, bolster spending on new products and grab market share in competitive world markets. But the heat is far from off GM, which lost $91 million in the third quarter of 2006 and expects to lose money again in 2007. Toyota Motor Co. is…

General Motors Spending $17 Million a Year on Viagra and Other "Lifestyle" Meds Date posted: 04-17-2006 DETROIT — General Motors' spiraling health-care costs are a well-known problem area. In fact, General Motors is the world's largest private buyer of Viagra, the paper says. General Motors' total health-care expenses add up to $5.6 billion a year and cover 1.1 million workers, employees and their dependents, the paper reports. Jamie LaReau Automotive News January 13, 2008 - 5:43 pm ET DETROIT -- General Motors will announce the details of phase two of its attrition plans soon. The plan would eliminate more hourly jobs this year, said CEO Rick Wagoner. GM is working with the UAW on the second part of an attrition program announced late last year after reaching a contract agreement with the union. Wagoner would not say how many jobs will be eliminated in this round because GM is still working on the program. The plan will target workers close to retirement age. They would be given a buyout package offer, and those who take it likely would be replaced eventually by lower-paid, younger…

GM Purchasing Chief: Raw Material Prices 'Scary' October 01, 2007: 05:55 PM EST The purchasing chief of General Motors Corp. (GM) said that price increases on certain key commodities are "scary" and that the auto maker is looking to reduce consumption and find alternate materials in some cases. In a press conference this past weekend in Bogota, Colombia, GM global purchasing chief Bo Andersson said the auto maker would look to use more magnesium instead of aluminum and more plastic in place of steel. The auto maker, like its competitors, is looking to cut costs. But price inflation in key commodities makes that task more challenging for the industry. "The most s…

by TOM KRISHER -- Associated Press posted August 31, 2006 DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. has decided to end its sponsorship of CBS' hit series "Survivor," but the world's largest automaker said Wednesday that the decision had nothing to do with the reality show's controversial decision to divide its contestants in the upcoming season by race and ethnicity. GM spokeswoman Ryndee S. Carney said the company made the decision in the normal course of making its media buys months ago, before the show made its recent announcement. I'm nearly stricken with tears at this beautiful and eloquent piece of writing. I highlighted some of the best parts. Ford and General Motors are Getting What They Deserve. By Editor (12/24/05) They have had over thirty-five years to figure out how to put quality in their products and still don't have a clue. (Explain to me how you "put quality" into a product. Horrible choice of wording.) Their attractive and flashy offerings often look very nice, but are poorly assembled and full of inferior quality components and parts. Once the word started to spread about the high quality of Japanese and recently some Korean models, the sales of Ameri…

GM needs only 2 big SUV plants Automaker plans to shift production to full-sized pickups By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 26, 2005 DETROIT - In the face of high gasoline prices, General Motors is counting on improved truck sales to offset modest expectations for its large SUVs. GM plans to build the next generation of its full-sized SUVs in two assembly plants, rather than the current three. But the automaker expects total full-sized truck capacity to stay about the same. GM will allocate more capacity to its full-sized pickups, chiefly the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM built about 1.7 million full-sized trucks and SUVs in North Amer…

Tom Walsh: You know GM's back in black when... When will we know that General Motors Corp. has fully emerged from its 30-year funk? This question arises as GM Chairman Rick Wagoner, Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and other GM brass begin walking and talking with a touch of swagger now that they've run off pesky billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, who cashed out his 10% GM stake, and brushed off SuperCEO Carlos Ghosn of Renault and Nissan in his bid to lure GM into a super-synergistic-sucker's auto alliance. Things are indeed looking up for GM, but remember, this is still a company only 11 months removed from a $10.6-billion loss in 2006. So how can we tell when GM has really turned th…

November 24, 2005 GM promises product benefits from business cuts by Alex Law , Auto123 Fate may play a card or two that will change things for everyone concerned, but it looks like future General Motors' consumers will benefit from the company's recent decision to close a bunch of plants and damage the lives of thousands and thousands of its workers and their families. This deal has been talked about for two years, and it looks like it may finally see fruition. Demand for Chevrolets and Opels in Eastern Europe is growing by leaps and bounds, with GM shortly to open a third plant in Russia to build the Chevy Captiva. Chevrolet sales grew by 33% in Europe, to more than 100,000, in the first quarter of 2007. It is the best-selling brand in Macedonia. Opel is Croatia's best-selling brand, Croatia bordering with Serbia and both of these being former republics of Yugoslavia. Looks like GM is in the news again. Certain 2024 model-year Chevy Silverado GMC Sierra trucks could split in the metal on the passenger side. Due to this, GM announced a stop-sale. Live Bait & Ammo # 72 At the Detroit Economic Club Miller said that bankruptcy “is a growth industry in America.” It’s ironic that Miller thought the audience in Detroit would find his smugness amusing. I heard teeth grinding like a tranny that popped a drain plug. He claimed the typical bankruptcy costs “about $100 million a year in professional fees.” He did not include the social costs, i.e., the losses to workers, investors, and taxpayers. If we provide enough carcasses, the vultures will flourish and the restructuring of America—lost jobs, lower wages, higher health care costs, and defunct pensions—will create new opportunities for bankrupt…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 8, 2012 Last week, we reported on the departure of GM's global marketing chief, Joel Ewanick. The reason given out at the time was Ewanick not meeting up to expectations. A day after his departure, a report from Bloomberg said Ewanick's departure was due to a review of a recent sponsorship agreement that didn't meet company policy. A week later, a new report from Bloomberg sheds some more light on why Ewanick was kicked out. The recent sponsorship agreement in question was a partnership between Chevrolet and U.K. soccer team Manchester United. The agreement, lasting till 2021, would have GM shelling out $18.6 mil…

Automotive News Charles Child 7-12-06 It's clear that Kirk Kerkorian will not let up on Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors. Kerkorian's implied threat to replace Wagoner with Carlos Ghosn is just a start. Kerkorian, the crazy-like-a-fox billionaire from Las Vegas, will keep prodding Wagoner to perform. But I have a plan that might keep Kerkorian at arm's length. OK, Wagoner is not Ghosn. But there's no reason why he can't act like the celebrated CEO of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. Ghosn stood tall at Nissan by spelling out specific sales and financial goals after he took command of the troubled Japanese automaker in 1999. Under his first three-year pro…

What GM's Strike Means to Car Shoppers Link to Original Article @ KickingTires At 11 this morning, the United Auto Workers union went on strike at American GM plants. This basically shuts down production of many new GM cars, trucks and SUVs for the foreseeable future. But does that mean you won’t be able to find that new GM car, truck or SUV when you go car shopping in the immediate future? According to the latest inventory numbers, GM on average has enough vehicles for 67 days at the current rate of sales. Some hot vehicles like the Buick Enclave — built in Lansing, Mich. — only had a 26-day supply, which is roughly 3,600 vehicles, as of Sept. 1. Trucks and SUVs lik…

Interesting figures on automakers' profitability in NA, from CNNMoney.com. To view the article, click here. I hope Nissan's $2,135 profit per vehicle, vs. GM's loss, won't give the Kerkorian-York-Ghosn team more fuel for the fire.

Saturday, November 26, 2005 Print this Comment on this E-mail this Spring Hill plant's survival depends on GM bringing changes Facility is shutting down Saturn Ion production, but expects to reconfigure for new product line By Beth Rucker / Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The General Motors Corp. Spring Hill manufacturing plant will survive if the company makes good on its promise to employees to bring in a new product line -- one that likely won't be a Saturn, analysts said. GM announced earlier this week that it will cut 30,000 jobs and close nine assembly, stamping and powertrain plants and three parts facilities. The line in Spring Hill producing th…

Keith Crain, editor at Automotive News calls a ball is a ball, and a strike is a strike. He has it figured out..........how come the guys running GM don't ????? Listen what he has to say GM. "It's a good thing that General Motors has North America and China to rely on for sales, products and profits. But what's going on in Europe? No one understood why GM got involved with PSA Peugeot Citroen by acquiring 7 percent of the company in March. Now, only a few months into the deal, it looks like GM executives made a big blunder. The weak European car market has made the value of the Peugeot stock worth less than the valuation carried on GM's balance sheet. I h…

Another day, another senate hearing into the General Motors ignition switch recall. Today, two new people were grilled by the committee about their knowledge in this mess. First up was Michael Millikin, GM's General Counsel. Millikin testified that he didn't know about the issue till February of this year. He also testified that lawyers working for GM during April 2013 had information pertaining to this from a case they were working on. However, they failed to notify engineers about the problem. "That was tragic. If they had brought it to my attention at that time, I certainly would have made sure that they had done something," Millikin said. Lower-level lawyers were …

GM hated it. Drucker's take—that the then-wildly-successful automaker might want to reexamine a host of long-standing policies on customer relations, dealer relations, employee relations, and more—was viewed from inside the corporati…

ROYAL OAK, Mich, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The top executive at General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday that if the recent strengthening of the Japanese currency continues, it would represent "a huge change in competitiveness" for U.S. automakers. Rick Wagoner, the automaker's chief executive, said that he would like to see the yen in the 90-100 range versus the U.S. dollar because such a level "would dramatically change" the competitive landscape. From Autoweek Dutch Mandel Imagine the Irony It certainly was not lost on the sharp mind of John G. Middlebrook, a 49-year veteran of General Motors sales wars. Middlebrook, who until July 1 was vice president of vehicle brand marketing and corporate advertising, joined family, friends and business acquaintances at the General Motors Heritage Center, a facility that chronicles GM's nearly 100-year history. They came to celebrate Middlebrook's retirement from the company. The irony: On the day that Middlebrook was making small talk with well-wishers, GM chairman Rick Wagoner announced that what once was the world's largest corporation is making dramatic, drasti…

The company planned to buy GM's 40 percent stake in Isuzu-General Motors Australia, said Kouitsu Mabuchi, an Isuzu spokesman in Tokyo. Mabuchi declined to give price details. Isuzu may also take a majority stake in a new truck unit in South Africa, to be spun off from a GM subsidiary, the Ni…

Flint: Strike Any Notion of a Delphi Strike Each day, the possibility of a potentially crippling Delphi strike seems to increase every so slightly as GM, the UAW and Delphi are still at loggerheads over an agreement that will prevent such a thing. Jerry Flint is not worried however, as he thinks the opposing forces are providing a whole a lot of bark but will lack the bite to actually go through with their threats. Is Mr. Flint right? See his reasoning for having little to fear. Read "Auto Strike? Not Likely" by Jerry Flint @ Forbes

General Motors has announced plans of moving towards an electrified and self-driving future. But in the foreseeable future, the company's core business model of selling vehicles to drivers will not be going away. “The owner-driver model will be there for a very long time. So far we see (mobility) as additive, but we see it as having potential to grow and be quite substantial,” said GM CEO Mary Barra during a meeting of the Automotive Press Association. Most of GM's and other automaker's profits come from crossovers, pickup trucks, and SUVs. But GM is planning for a possible future where the automotive landscape is very different. Back in October, the automaker a…

GM Considers Selling West Mifflin Plant Aug 15, 2006 10:42 am US/Eastern Link to Original Article @ KDKA.com (AP) WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. A union official at the General Motors auto parts stamping plant in West Mifflin say the company wants to sell the plant instead of closing it down as was announced last year. If the plant is sold, it could save nearly 400 jobs there, according to Rick Mismas, shop chairman of the United Auto Workers local at the plant just east of Pittsburgh. Mismas told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that workers were advised of a possible sale in a union newsletter last week. General Motors announced in November that it was cutting 30,000 jobs to save…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 16, 2012 Today, General Motors announced their results for 2011 and forth quarter. The company announced a profit of $7.6 billion for 2011, a large increase from the $4.7 billion profit in 2010. However, forth quarter results were not as impressive. Net income for the forth quarter was only $472 million, or about the same as Q4 2010. While this makes it eight straight quarters of positive growth, the earnings were weighed down by losses of $562 million in Europe. There were also a number of one-time events that affected earnings in the fourth quarter. Take those events out and GM says the profit would have …

John Revill Automotive News Europe February 16, 2009 06:01 CET ENLARGEAlain Visser will focus more on Opel’s sales strategy. General Motors is restructuring its sales, marketing and aftersales operations in Europe to give its Opel, Chevrolet Europe and Saab brands more autonomy. The move is likely to include a greater role for Chevrolet in Europe as GM’s entry brand while also making it easier for Saab to be spun off into a separate company. The change also will allow each brand to be more responsive to market conditions, Brent Dewar, GM Europe’s head of sales, marketing and aftersales told Automotive News Europe. “This year will be as challenging as 2008…

Enter GM Defense LLC that took the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 truck with GM's 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine, add a 12 module battery pack, electric motors front and rear for awd and a total armored exterior allowing GM Defense to meet the requirements of a Silent drive and watch tactical vehicle prototype for the 21st century. GM Defense ensured the vehicle would have a stealthy ingress and egress for success in high threat zones, delivering onboard power to support …

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 20, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors' next generation of SUVs will debut with significant gains in fuel efficiency, safety, sophistication and design, the automaker promises. But GM doesn't think that will mean a huge spike in sales. GM, which unveiled its 2007 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe as well as the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade to journalists on Tuesday, is projecting sales to maintain current levels. "It is realistic to assume the segment won't grow," said Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global development. GM says it owns 60 to 62 percent of a 750,000-unit segment and leads…

[source: Wall Street Journal] GM's China Sales Hit Monthly Record in April BEIJING -- General Motors Corp. said its sales in China hit a monthly record in April, rising 50% from a year earlier on strength in its Buick and Wuling brands. The strong performance in China by the U.S. auto maker, until recently the world's biggest by output, contrasts with its struggles in its home market. GM is racing to restructure outside of bankruptcy court in the U.S., and is expected this week to accelerate talks with the United Auto Workers union and move toward closing about 2,600 dealerships. GM, which posted record China sales of 151,084 unit…

I can only shake my head and sigh. First there was the Equinox Then there was the Torrent. Now the Grand Vitara. I am sure GM must have some logical reason that Suzuki should get a version of the hottest selling Chevy to have come out in years. Please tell me there is. Did Suzuki badger and cajole GM? Did they threaten? Is there some legal reason that GM has to hand the keys to the Equinox over to them? Isn't it bad enough that the Verona and Swift + are already cross-shopped? I can only weep for the future of this company. Clearly, nobody in Detroit gets it. Hyundai and Kia are no longer bit players, let alone Suzuki. This can only serv…

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/content/1...27324/index.php I enjoy reading this series because there's occasionally some insight to the bigger picture. Farago is rooting for GM despite the constant gloom. He's just as frustrated by the nasty combination of historic short-sighted and ill-visioned GM execs, legacy union issues, and increased competition as many of us are. The prospect of Tower and Delphi not coming to a good-for-all-parties agreement with the UAW is troubling. Seems the UAW will run GM into the ground and there's nothing that either GM or the UAW leadership can do to stop it. People are just too fat at this point.

GM To Union: Trust Us Andrew Farrell | 09.13.07, 12:29 PM ET | Link to Original Article @ Forbes With a key deadline looming on labor negotiations, investors were optimistic that General Motors would soon be able to create a new health care trust for its workers and save billions of dollars. Shares of General Motors rose $1.93, or 6.4%, to $32.18, after Citi analyst Itay Michaeli said they would be worth much more if GM could hammer out a favorable labor deal. Michaeli initiated coverage of General Motors with a "buy" rating on Thursday. GM, Ford Motor, and Chrysler are in round-the-clock negotiations with the United Auto Workers Union, which represents about 180,000…

GM has recalled its all-new crossovers, the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, because of potentially faulty airbag sensors. The recall affects all 13,032 of the vehicles on the road. The problem stems from a faulty sensor that controls the front airbags’ deployment. It will also prevent the vehicle from alerting owners of a malfunction. GM says the problem is a software issue and can be remedied with a service — no parts need to be replaced — at the dealer at no cost to owners. The company discovered the problem during internal testing and no incidents have been reported. Letters went out Thursday to Outlook owners, and letters for Acadia owners will go out Feb. 28. Owne…

GM management to blame FLINT JOURNAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Tuesday, April 04, 2006 by Theodore Edick Let's take a look at some of the decisions General Motors' top-level management has made over the years, and it will be easy to see why it is in the fix it's in. Several years ago, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the third-best-selling nameplate behind Chevy and Ford. So GM canceled that car, and eventually did away with the entire Oldsmobile division. Not many years ago, Buick LeSabre was the best-selling Buick, so GM did away with that nameplate. Also Buick's best-quality LeSabre plant was the Buick City plant in Flint, and GM not only stopped production at t…

GM To Idle Two Truck Plants, Cut Down On Inventory William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2011 Back in early May, we reported on GM looking at cut in production of their pickup trucks. The reason why was due to increasing size of their unsold inventory, which stood at 275,000 at that time. A month later, the pickup inventory has increased by 13,000 to a total of 288,000. To help combat the large inventory, GM idle two of their truck plants for two weeks beginning on July 4th. The two plants are Flint Assembly in Flint, MI and Fort Wayne Assembly in Roanoke, IN. “GM is rightly being quite careful about building products into the sum…

Two weeks after becoming the CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra got blind sided with the news that a major safety problem, a faulty ignition switch in certain vehicles that could turn and cause the vehicle to stop with no warning had come to light. This switch was flagged years ago as being problematic but nothing aside from service bulletin was ever done. This problem was linked at the time to several crashes and 13 fatalities. When Barra testified to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce about the ignition switch, she said that she only knew about the issue in late January. But many questioned for someone who worked at the company for 34 years, why was she kept in …
