With sales of new vehicles slowing down, automakers find themselves making tough decisions in terms of production and jobs. Later this week, General Motors will temporally shut down their Delta Twp, MI plant (home to Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse) for a month to retool to make way for the next-generation models. When production begins back up on June 12th, there could be more than 600 workers without a job due to the third shift being cut. The Lansing State Journal reports that back in March, close to 1,100 workers were possibly going to be laid off. The plan would eliminate more hourly jobs this year, said CEO Rick Wagoner. Looks like GM is in the news again. Certain 2024 model-year Chevy Silverado GMC Sierra trucks could split in the metal on the passenger side. Due to this, GM announced a stop-sale. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) has published a document that 3,067 vehicles are being inspected. They will test the 1,500, 2,500, and 3,500. Another day, another senate hearing into the General Motors ignition switch recall. Today, two new people were grilled by the committee about their knowledge in this mess. First up was Michael Millikin, GM's General Counsel. Millikin testified that he didn't know about the issue till February of this year. The company announced a profit of $7.6 billion for 2011, a large increase from the $4.7 billion profit in 2010. However, forth quarter results were not as impressive. Net income for the forth quarter was only $472 million, or about the same as Q4 2010. While this makes it eight straight quarters of positive growth, the earnings were weighed down by losses of $562 million in Europe. Farago is rooting for GM despite the constant gloom. He's just as frustrated by the nasty combination of historic short-sighted and ill-visioned GM execs, legacy union issues, and increased competition as many of us are. The prospect of Tower and Delphi not coming to a good-for-all-parties agreement with the UAW is troubling. Seems the UAW will run GM into the ground and there's nothing that either GM or the UAW leadership can do to stop it. People are just too fat at this point.

GM has recalled its all-new crossovers, the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, because of potentially faulty airbag sensors. The recall affects all 13,032 of the vehicles on the road. The problem stems from a faulty sensor that controls the front airbags’ deployment. It will also prevent the vehicle from alerting owners of a malfunction. GM says the problem is a software issue and can be remedied with a service — no parts need to be replaced — at the dealer at no cost to owners.
