Being first matters. Today, Dodge drew a line in the sand by reintroducing the Dodge Charger as the first electrified muscle car in both sedan and coupe forms. Not just an electric vehicle, the Charger will be available as a multi-energy lineup, sporting both pure EV and gas powered options. The Charger will keep its title as the world's most powerful muscle car, starting with the all-electric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack with 670 horsepower and a 3.3 second 0-60 time. It was supposed to be released in 2020. Now, the release date is 2021. This means it should be in the showrooms in late 2020, just a little over a year from now. The Dodge Challenger has been enjoying a resurgence for the past couple of years, due in part to the supercharged variants known as the Hellcat and Demon. As I scour for articles on the next version of the Charger, I can't seem to keep the timeline of what has been said in order. I'll see an article that says it will be on a version of the Alfa Romeo Giorgio platform modified and tuned for the new Charger. Then, I'll see an article with the late Marchionne saying it will be on a highly modified version of the current chassis that will perform very differently. (I interpret that as "better"). What seems to be the latest train of thought for the next Charger ... and the next Challenger? Also, do you think the next rendition will roll out in 2021 instead of 2020?

I am a little frustrated with GM's limited sedan and lack of coupe offerings. Right now, I'd probably buy a Cruze LT and call it a day. Let us wind the clock back to November 2016. We wrote a piece in the rumorpile saying that the next-generation Dodge Challenger and Charger had been pushed back to 2021. It is a story we have all heard time and time again. A limited-run model is announced by an automaker and certain dealerships take advantage of this by marking up the price. As the Dodge Viper drives off into the sunset, its home since 1995 will be shut down. NBC Detroit affiliate WDIV reports that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' will be closing down the Conner Avenue Assembly in Detroit at the end of August. At the moment, more than 80 people work at the plant. In a notice filed with the state of Michigan in June, FCA said it would be offering positions at other locations to those affected. Another day and another Challenger variant has been revealed. This time it is the 2018 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody. The Widebody features the wide front fenders and splitter found on the Demon. The new fenders add 3.5-inches in overall width - perfect to fit the 305/35R20-size Pirelli P Zero tires with a set of 20-inch wheels. Because of this, Dodge is having all of the buyers sign an acknowledgment form to know what they are getting themselves into. Dodge is doing something that can be considered as sacrilegious in the muscle car class. They are adding an all-wheel drive version of the Challenger to their lineup. The 2017 Challenger GT will go on sale early next year with a base price of $34,990 (includes $1,095 destination charge). The all-wheel drive system that the Challenger will use is the same one found in the Charger AWD - power is sent to the rear wheels until slip is detected, at which point the front axle will hook up to the transfer case and get power. A week ago, Dodge dropped a teaser announcing the return of the Demon nameplate. It will appear on the Challenger SRT and become the "new ultimate performance halo" vehicle of the lineup. Yes, there will be a model that usurps the SRT Hellcat. Dodge for its part has released two teaser videos about the Demon. The most recent video reveals that the Demon will be 200 pounds lighter than the Hellcat. It is suggested in the video that various components in the suspension, steering, and interior have been swapped for lighter parts. Automotive News has learned from two sources that FCA won't redesign the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Charger until 2021 when they will transition onto the Giorgio RWD platform. Last month, we learned that Dodge had some interesting plans for the Challenger . There is an all-wheel drive version that will be introduced this fall, followed up by a widebody model with the Hellcat V8 known as the ADR. Thanks to a spy photographer, we have the first photos of the ADR. Now the two vehicles photographed don't have the wider fenders installed, but the wider tires give away their identity. We can't tell how wide the tires are, but it would be safe to assume they are in the range of 315 or more. We don't know if Dodge has some other changes in store for the suspension or brakes. Last year at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, FCA introduced the Challenger GT concept that featured AWD. The premise was you could have a four-seasons muscle car. It seems this idea got enough traction that FCA is going forward with it. Automotive News reports that Dodge will introduce Challenger GT AWD this fall. The Dodge Charger is getting up there in age, not in looks but its platform. The 300 and Charger's LX platform uses suspension bits from older Mercedes-Benz models (W211 E-Class and W220 S-Class). The Dodge Viper's future is uncertain after 2017. Allpar got their hands on the proposed UAW contract for FCA and looked at the production changes. According to the contact, the current Viper will end production in 2017 and leave the Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit without a vehicle to take its place. The current Viper has been languishing since its introduction in 2013 due to a combination of a high pricetag and competitors stepping up. The factory hasn't been able to keep up with the demand, so they had to put on hold on orders and increase the production of the Hellcat engines. The Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat models have become a big seller for the brand. Dodge brand head Tim Kuniskis tells Automotive News they have received 9,000 orders for both models, double the amount the company was expecting to sell. Production of the Dodge Viper has been on hiatus since April due to poor sales. But according to Automotive News, Chrysler's Conner Avenue plant will commence Viper production once again next month. Automotive News reports that Chrysler is being sued by Scat Enterprises Inc., for infringing on their 50-year-old 'Scat' trademark. Well, I'm not going to give a full write up or anything but I thought I'd throw a few thoughts/comments out there on my first ever new Chrysler product. I really wanted a V6/8-speed car due to my daily commute but got too good of a deal on the R/T to pass it up. Now that I have it, I'm glad I got the Hemi. Here are my thoughts: 1) It gets much better gas mileage than I expected.
