So here goes. It's Friday, 2pm (got out of work early) By Saturday night I'll be finished moving out of the old place... that means ALL of my $hit has to be gone, the '59 Buick and the rest of the fleet incl. my 69-ish IH Cub Cadet are already at the new place... but I have EPIC amounts of pack ratted crap in the basement to move & he clock is ticking. (you laugh now but someday all those 1950s and 1960s Hot Rod magazines and thousands of car emblems will be worth a king's fortune!) Also, Sunday (the day it will be snowing) I will be taking my first roadtrip of 2009. We'll be headed 146 miles north to almost the Canadian border, …

I had to run to Lowe's today to pick up a few things. As usual, I parked out by myself with no cars next to me. When I was finished, as I was just about to hit the trunk unlock button, I realized I left my list and pen by the self-checkout register, so I turned my cart around and went back inside with my purchases still in the cart. I retrieved my forgotten stuff and wheeled my cart back out to the car. It is breezy here today. As I approached my car, I noticed an '02 Durango parked next to me. At that moment, a kid of about 7 years old opened the rear door of the Dodge, the wind caught it, and it slammed into the driver's door of my car, right in the center, just b…

Hi all, After gauging the intrest on my 05 mustang GT and with some of my end of the year improvments to my finances I have decided to deffinetly go ahead and sell my car. I will be clear between 4000-6500 selling it via a private sale after paying off the ballance of the loan. I have an additional 3000 in savings that I can put twards a new car. I will be getting a late 90's early 2000s Jeep in the price range of 5-6k. I don't drive very much anymore and neither does my girlfriend milage wise but we both travel on the weekends and a jeep would be a lot more practical for our active lifestyles, plus right now I have to park on the street and while I can drive my mus…

I thought this would be a fun topic. If you could bring back or create five new GM vehicles that aren't currently in the lineup, what would they be? Here's my list: 1. Cadillac ULS - range topping Cadillac to compete with 7er/S-Class/etc. 2. Buick Velite - RWD sedan, coupe, and convert versions based on the concept. 3. Pontiac "G8" - RWD sedan based loosely on the GTO (next gen GTO, if there is one). 4. Pontiac Kappa sedan - something to give Pontiac a model below the G6. 5. Chevy Camaro - self explanatory I think.

So I spent my allotted coffee break (I don't drink coffee) shipping a package out at the nearby post office. A guy who's delivering several packages stops what he's doing and asks me, "Excuse me, but do you drive a blue Cobalt?" I reply, "Yes." He then says, "I saw you driving it this morning. Man, that car looks awesome! I had never seen them except in the papers. I never knew they looked this good. Nice car!" I thanked him and haven't stopped grinning since. Boy am I glad I didn't get that Monte!

How many things would you do differently if you could go back with the knowledge you have now? I can think of several major changes in my life that I would love to make if I could go back in time. But here's a recent one: Instead of trying to pull a Hero Stunt J-turn in the middle of the racetrack after a half a lap in reverse at 40mph, I would pull off onto the grass and turn around safely and avoid a bone crunching rear end that disbled my Volvo and put me out of the Halloween Howler race. Here's a play-by-play photo journal recap of this years Demolition Derby race. Here she is. 240,000+ miles, $100. - Replacement grill from th…

Anybody have some pretty memorable kills? I'll share two. The first was about a year or so ago. My dad and I were in the Durango and some punk in a riced out Civic was revving at us laughing. Funny thing is, when the light turned green, my dad brake torqued it a bit and took off, beating the Civic to the next light and the kid didn't look over nor rev. Idiot. Next is my one of two "best" kills in the Camaro (the other was against a mid-90s GT and was probably my best kill). But I raced a dude who was in a Hemi Ram. He said to go at green (we were both cruising Gratiot) and we did, but I got a terrible start. He said he started bad too (he lost nonethe…

I am right now listening to their new (cover) album YEAH! Why is a band like they once were, doing COVER records? and to make things worse, covering one of my all time favorite songs, by one of my all time favorite bands HANGING ON THE TELEPHONE by BLONDIE. You're covering DEBBIE, you're seriously messin with me. i supported the bad when they were getting dumped on during the ADRENALIZE and X days.....defended their right to do SLANG. On Wedensday a new CTS Sport (2007) came in, and I spent a good two hours getting her all ready to be put out on the lot. It looked sweet when I got done with it, and I have the pics to prove it In other news, I got to drive a new Tahoe to the gas station along with an SRX V6, CTS (not this one) which was a lot of fun, SRX V8 (loaner car), some other loaner cars that aren't worth mentioning, HHR, and just about an hour ago, an SSR! The SSR was definetly the coolest of the bunch, people were just staring at it the whole time.

I just put this in the general "Other Guys" news, since there is no section for American manufacturers who aren't Ford or DC. Story: http://www.wired.com/news/wiredmag/0,71414-0.html By Joshua Davis, from Wired magazine 12:00 PM Jul, 19, 2006 Martin Eberhard holds the brake down with his left foot and presses on the accelerator with his right. The motor revs, the car strains against the brake. I hear ... almost nothing. Just a quiet whine like the sound of a jet preparing for takeoff 5 miles away. We're belted into a shimmering black sports car on a quiet, tree-lined street in San Carlos, California, 23 miles south of San Francisco. It has taken Eberhard three years t…

The rules of this thread...we need to name as many cars that we personally are crazy about that no one else at C and G is wild about. people may like them okay or hate them... but we need to find as many cars, oddball or not, that we are the only people who are nuts about them. Here is my list- I love the 1953 Ford, last of the Flatheads, and even paced the Indy 500 that year. I've ALWAYS wanted one of these since I was a kid, but have never had the chance to own one... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inventory_show.asp?stknum=3334 71-72 Ford LTD ragtop...I think Moltie likes these, but he and I are probably the only ones... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inv…

It is my opinion that everyone viewing C&G should be registered, that there should be no "guests." I feel this way because whenever C&G has breaking news or a unique spy photo, the number of guests far outweighs the number of registered members. Perhaps it's no big deal, but I suspect that these guests are people who normally post to other car boards, and they merely view C&G to learn scoops and then share them with their usual audience. I guess I consider other websites as "competitors," and my loyalty is with C&G. To me, C&G has, arguably, at times, been the leading GM news website, and I hope that others will recognize and respect the site. …

After a great day at work today, I was on my way home, heading west in the center lane of IL RT 58 in Schaumburg (traveling about 20 miles per hour … luckily), when a car streaked across the roadway from the right lane to the left lane in front of me … no warnings, no signals, nothing. I was too shocked at what the driver did to react (i.e. honk horn). However, the driver of the car to my left blared his horn. The driver of the offending car apparently thought I had honked my horn and dived back into the center lane in front of me, sped up slightly, and then slammed on his brakes. I saw the rear end of the car shoot upwards and I quickly hit my brakes, skidding to alm…

And I hope I don't offend anyone with my dream, I just want to tell you guys about it because you guys were in it. But don't say I didn't warn you... So as I start dreaming I find myself walking up to Balthazar's house, as he's asked me over to have a ride in his newest toy. A perfectly restored 1964 Black Pontiac Grand Prix. We're cruising along the New Jersey Turnpike, chatting away, talking about my sons music and his son's band, vintage cars and the like when we start talking to each other in French for some odd reason. Balthazar pulls off…

Recently I have come into posession of a Nintendo Entertainment System circa 1985. I've wanted one for a while, but couldn't justify the $60+s&h for one on eBay. I found a used game place that had one so I traded my N64 (hasn't been used regularly in years) and some games for it. I've got Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 as well as Duck Hunt. OH MY GOD THESE THINGS ARE AWESOME! (Sorry, I just went reg on you guys) I didn't have one when I was younger (went straight into the Sega Genesis) so I didn't get to spend a lot of time with the NES back in the day and am making up for it now. So, there was a thread similiar to this that I can't find (I'm sure someone will post a link though when THEY find it! ). Originally, I replied that we were going to pay off the G6 in mid-2014 (if not earlier) and then the Envoy in early 2016, at which time I'd look to get me a new GMC Sierra pickup. The the wife fell in love with the Buick Encore and wants to consider leasing one when they hit the market (meaning one of the two current vehicles has to go). Logic says dump the Envoy - it will be 7 years old and still has 3 years left on the loan - and keep the G6 since it's almost paid off (and likely not a good trade-in value). Though I don't want to be without a tru…

Some of you may have noticed a series of small changes being made around here. For every one small change you see, there are 10 more that you can't see that only really apply to how the search engines see the site. This is part of a concentrated effort on my part to raise the visibility of CheersandGears.com in the eyes of the search engines. This is a learning process for me, but since diving into this on January 1, we've seen some slight movement in the right direction. I am expending this effort and money for two reasons: First, we've been turned down by some manufacturers for being too small and not having enough unique visitors per month. There are multiple ratin…

As I've traveled, I've often wondered why people decide to live and work in the towns/cities in which they live/work. Mostly, I think about this in terms of the small "mom and pop" type stores or shops or service centers that cater to only a small geographical region. Of course, with the internet, in most cases, those same businesses can reach farther than ever before. Yet, I wonder what brought them to set up a brick'n'mortar business and home in the location they have chosen. Was the decision made because of the location of family? The location of friends? Or, was it the cost of living? The cost of doing business? Or, was it due to a particular opportunity? And…

From the other side: Road along the bottom: The area I'll be living in is flat, but is right beside the foothills to the rockies. Those of us into cars are a special breed. Many of us keep our cars as if they are another member of the family. So when we see friends or relatives mistreat their vehicles, it raises hairs on the back of our neck. What annoys you the most about these people? Is it: How messy they keep their car? I have a relative that just picked up a clean used Ford Explorer 6 months ago. I saw it when he first got it and while it is a 2006, it was clean and in decent shape. I saw it again over the holiday weekend and it was loaded with junk, brake dust all over the wheels and in need of a bath. Their disregard for for regular maintenance? Back in high school I h…

...I'm not saying that you drive like an idiot, but everyone else in this state does. On the way down here yesterday I learned that most Iowans answer to a little ice on the interstate is to slam on thier brakes. Hopefully the ones who hit the ditch as a result learned a leason, but I doubt it. In downtown Des Moines last night, I was almost hit by three different vehicles. I'm going to give Des Moines the benefit of the doubt there since it was probably the alcohol is everyone's system down there that was doing the driving, but it didn't help to sway me to the side of the Iowans. Hope this doesn't affend anyone, Iowa is a nice state, just something I noticed. W…

Well I have always wanted to write a book and I think know would be the time. The biggest challenge for me is what to write about and who's my audience and would people care. Also its a promise I need to carry out. Before my friend Jay was KIA He always joked about writing a story of our lives in the military and Call it "The life story of an nonexistent person." one thing I'm not short of, is story's, or plot lines, but If i told my story it would have no direction and kind of whiny. So some questions would you be interested in reading about my life? Is it worth it? What should i call it? What message should i try to put across? Do i target it to the youngsters i…

I am on vacation and in the Southland heading for my home in Texas to see my mother, then after that on to California. We have stopped for the night. GM will let you know what it plans to do as far as cost cutting goes within the corporation, this will happen at 8:30 AM tomorrow. Expect to see many engineers assigned to frozen projects let go, I will let you speculate on which products they are but be aware there will be a shake-up of GM's product portfolio. Most of the cuts will come from GMNA, GM's home market, some engineers have been reassigned to small-car projects, however GM will be a smaller company with a thinner product line so there could be thousands let…

It would be a big help if you guys could type up C&G related words so I could copy/paste them into the site. Anything General Motors related and needs to be at least two words each. For example: Chevy Camaro Chevrolet Camaro Buick Regal Buick Lacrosse Cadillac Escalade Platinum Don't worry about dupes, the software will sort them out. Thanks a bunch and hopefully it will drive more traffic to C&G.

This is the STUPIDEST thing I think the government has ever wasted our money on, and really decent cars are going to be scrapped because of it. Further, I really think if the government had half a brain, they would have demanded that the trade ins could only be made on a domestic owned lot - Ford - GM - Chrysler - so that the money came back home, not further increase the trade deficits. So, get out there, cruise the back lots and tell me what you find. I will start off with a really nice '99 Wrangler YJ 6 cylinder 5 speed hard top - no rot, great shape...needed a bath...will never…

Vehicles that aren't your "type" but you're interested in anyway. Hopefully an ongoing thread. Many of us have a type that we go for... whether that be in dating or in cars. Tell us your type and then tell us a car that defies that type that you're still interested in. For me: I like big luxury cruisers. Buick Lacrosse, Cadillac CTS and STS, Lincoln MKS. I really dislike cute utes, crossovers, and sport utility vehicles. My admiration for the Avalanche come more from it's utility than it's aesthetic though as far as trucks go, it's one of the best looking. but one SUV keeps catching my eye. The interior is really a put off, but I can't help but stop and stare a…

When very little I really liked matchbox or dinkie toys and really got stoked when they had a trailer hitch with something to pull. I had a favorite car and camper trailer. But my dream toy was always a pedal car and never got one. We lived in the mountians and nothing but gravel, really slowed them down. I would have been in Nirvana with this:

I'm crazy about any carmakers ideas for possible manufacture or just as a design study. Some are wonderful and some are downright wacky. American Motors in the 60s: AMX concept: AMC Cavalier concept: American Motors design proposals, probably from the 70s/early 80s:

So Terminator 2 and Matrix have been on TV tonight and I've really got a hankering for a firearm now. All I want for Christmas is an AR-15 or an MP-5. Of course a tactical shot gun would be fun too.

OK, I put these in response to the post about Lincoln changing the Zephyr name to MKz and thought it would be fun to have everyone else add their own Lincoln model name and description of the car: OK, so I've created the new Lincoln line up: The Mark Harris - a car with no balls The Mark Hamill - It's really popular when it comes out, but then after a few years no one buys it. The Mark Twain - It only comes in white and a lot of kids are forced to like it, but have no idea why. The Mark Vincent - People never buy the gasoline version, it gets popular when Lincoln indroduces the diesel version The Mark Wahlberg - First introduced with standard hip-hop items l…

My SKY image came through yesterday!!! I go to the dealership on Saturday to write up the paperwork and put a deposit down, although the sales manager has already put it into the system with the options I want. I was working a late yesterday (actually, almost always do) and I get an e-mail from the manager saying that my image arrived, he put in my options, and I can now officially say that I have ordered my '07 SKY. The only downside is that I wanted the black & red two-toned leather interior to go with the Silver Graphite exterior. There's a constraint on that interior, so I told him to go ahead and change the interior to the all black leather interior. Hope…

I'm leaving tomorrow at 4:30AM for the airport to get on a plane to go to Miami where I will stay for a day and then get on a cruise ship to cruise around the Bahamas and other areas. Just thought I should let everyone know why I will probably not be here much from tomorrow until June 11.

So the other day while bored but stuck at home in the rain I found this horrible flick "Snake Eater" on OnDemand. I watched it (unfortunately) and I can honestly say it's one of the cheesiest movies of all time. Absolutely horrible like a bad train wreck: it's terrible but you can't look away. It stars that great acting ledgend Lorenzo Lama(s) & some dude who looks like a stunt double for Kenny Rodgers. (or Will Sasso as K.R. on MadTV) To make matters worse I just found out there's a made for TV Miami Vice movie hitting theatres soon, Jamie Foxx is not even a bad actor, in silly comedies but not in a M.V. remake. Miami Vice is two things:…

Jeez, seems like Chevy filmed this '72 Malibu as it cruzed through PA Dutch Country... what a nice looking car, that '72 Malibu. Does my eye spy a "350" badge on the fender next to "Malibu", or is it a "307"... <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pu-TnCo4yQ8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

My worst two- Taking the Miata down my favorite exit ramp (marked 25 MPH) at 73 miles per hour after I pulled off the shaved autocross tires and put on all seasons...one VERY impressive four wheel drift at high speed about two weeks ago. Would have hated to call the insurance company back... Was driving to work about two years ago, took the Miata...which was a mistake, as it was a level two snow emergency. Good looking thirty something blonde in a Hyundai Tiberon wanted to race me, for some unknown reason i raced her...not thinking that this time I DID have the shaved autocross tires (read-slicks on all 4 corners during a blizzard)...had about three car lengths pulled…

You guys have all been unwilling witnesses to my fruitless search for a decent plow truck, and distractions with more interesting stuff as I look for ways to get things rolling on my personal automotive front. Sorry about that if it transferred my frustration into yours! When is he going to freakin' buy something?!! Well, maybe not until I sell my daily driver Tahoe. I'm unlikely to find what I'm looking for within budget, so that means I have to find a way to increase the budget, and selling the Tahoe is probably the most effective move I can make on that front. Of course that means I have to push the wagon back into service for a while which I hadn't planned on. G…

Did anyone else see this story on CBS Sunday Morning, January 14? For some reason the first part where they talked to Consumer Reports really struck a nerve with me. I hate how they just group domestic car makers together and how they nit-pick certain test to prove their point. But I guess I should expect any different. U.S. Cars Improve In Quality

Here's a simple scenario. Let's say you have a few grand saved up and you want to buy a decent beater to keep the miles off of your nice later model car, and to also bear the brunt of going on long commutes to and from class and work, especially in inclement weather. You've found two options that are quite enticing. Here are those two options. Option One: 2005 Saabaru 9-2X AWD; 2.5L Boxer-Four; Five-Speed Stick; 57,000 miles; asking price of $4,000 with room to negotiate. Condition: filthy seats; rusty dent in the rear left side passenger door; horrible curb rash on all four tires, but otherwise sound. Option Two: 2002 Isuzu Axiom 4WD; 3.5L V6; Four-Speed Autotragic Slu…

Okay.... so as of today, Thursday, May 10th 2007 there is less than five weeks left before I hit the road with several friends to drive about 3700 miles in less than a week. I promissed DodgeFan I'd hammer out the timeline on here since he's going along. So here goes. I'm hoping to get about 13mpg on this trip since it will be 95% highway miles and I'm either taking the 1959 Buick which has a 6.0 liter V8, or perhaps (blasphemy!) I might take the 1977 Cadillac instead. The Cadillac has a very economical rear end in it... 2.08:1, but it breathes through a big 4bbl and displaces 425 cubic inches/7.0 liters. So for the sake of argument, since Big Red got abou…

It's sad to say but I will be parting ways with my xB within the next month or two. My family has decided to do some car rearranging in order to cut down on expenses and stop me from killing my sister. We have been sharing the xB for about the past year but she just started paying her portion last month. She doesn't care for it...allows people to smoke in it, trashes it, etc. I can't stand it. After my dad's Altima lease ends early next month he will get my mom's 4Runner, my sister will get a cheap car (under $3,000) and me and my mom will share a car. After doing some research this week we narrowed the field down to: 2008 Saturn Vue Mitsu Outlander Nissan Mu…

Okay, by now you've seen that I'm going to sell the SKY soon and it's apparent that I am also trying to get rid of the AURA too. Not that there's anything wrong with either car (how I'd love to kkeep them both), but the wife informed me recently that we are living way beyond our means. After making as many changes as possible to help save where we could, it still boils down that the SKY needs to be sold to pay off other debt, and triming our remaining car payments down would really help too. She said for the Envoy to go, but I told her that the lease has 11 months remaining and I really like the Envoy. So that leads to the AURA having to go, which I'm working on with …

When you fall through it! Or at least in this case when your left leg goes through the porch up to the mid-thigh. Well everyone I've seemed to have hurt myself. I'd come out of the woods this evening from hunting and was quietly packing my rifle away in its case on the front porch when CRAAAACK!!! and down goes my left leg through one of the boards on the porch. Looks like the reboarding and reinforcement of the front porch just got moved up a notch on the home improvement list...

So I had a request to make these more difficult. So in an effort to do that, I'm creating one that will be different for everybody, but still be based off the same rules. It will span different amounts of time for different posters, so everyone will have different options available to them. Here's the rules- 1) You get to select ONE vehicle from 5 different points in your life. They are as follows... 2) You get one vehicle from your birth year. 3) You get one vehicle from the year when you turned 16. 4) You get one vehicle from the year when you turned 21. IF you are 30, OR older, you can choose one from the year you turned 25. 5) You get one vehi…

So, while looking for crossover leases for my boss, and researching dealer incentives on Edmunds, I decided to see what the SRX had to offer (its probably more than what he wants to spend but I thought maybe there were some good leases...). Anyways, right now there's a $2024 GM to dealer incentive for premium lux V6 models, $900 GM to dealer for AWD on V6 models, and $900 GM to dealer for the rear seat. Before today when the $3000 GM to customer incentive came out, there was also a $2000 GM to dealer incentive for any model SRX (at least V6). There's an SRX that has these options plus the 18" wheel and tire package and white diamond paint at my local dealership right now …

As home prices continue to decline and loan defaults mount, federal regulators are bracing for dozens of American banks to fail over the next year. But after a large mortgage lender in California collapsed late Friday, Wall Street analysts began posing two crucial questions: Just how many banks might falter? And, more urgently, which one could be next? The nation’s banks are in far less danger than they were in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when more than 1,000 federally insured institutions went under during the savings-and-loan crisis. The debacle, the greatest collapse of American financial institutions since the Depression, prompted a government bailout that cos…

Over the last week, I've looked at a number of cars as a potential "winter beater" or "winter beater/road warrior"...3 of those on Saturday, November 8. I tend to come across either FWD coupes or RWD sedans. I'd prefer a RWD coupe.... '78 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $3500 ...nice car, orange in color with tan vinyl top, but too good of condition to use as a winter beater, imo. ...not too keen on vinyl tops ... or the vinyl seats it had ... or it being a sedan. ...Possible name = Orange Flame '89 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $2500 ...nice car on the outside; 2-tone blue. ...appeared to have some leaks into the interior and, when I drove it, the h…
