Recently have become mildly obsessed with the twilight era for vintage junkyards, which is happening right now. I have developed a small cyber toolbox (GoogleMaps, GlobeXplorer, MapQuest, Switchboard) to gather before & after aerial pics of junkyards across the U.S. Mostly this is to document where they were and their size, but it's also useful to today's scroungers to assess whether a given sight-unseen yard today looks worth the trip. Not sure why, but I was struck today to grab the camera in the sunny heat and just take pictures of our car conglomeration. Too bad only a few were cleaned, and mine was covered (hah...prepping for the storm that hit soon after), but still interesting. Why? Especially now with gas prices, micro cars, etc., the whole driveway is still FULL of old GM boats, all daily drivers--with the one pretty new face of Malibu just standing out like the Suburban before it never did. Looks almost like land of the lost. First some overalls...and again, why I didn't do this before I put my car cover on, who knows.

So, I just had a thought pop into my mind: Imagine the future of the V8 as this: 4.0L, twin-turbo, SIDI, 500+HP. How, you ask? Stick two 2.0L SIDI Ecotecs together and that's what you have. I don't know if that would work, but it seems plausible enough. It would deliver pretty good fuel mileage as well, I think. Image the other possibilities, too. The same HP/L (130 is what the 2.0 gets, but lets use 125) out of a 3.0L would yield 375 screaming ponies. A 3.5L would make 435HP... and so on... I think you can do the math easily enough. one word Amazing! This weekend was the Red Bull Air Race in Detroit. It was crazy. They put on a very good show and had much more then just air racing. they had helicopter stunts and sky divers and military aircraft flybys. They had a F-4U fly in formation with a F-18. that takes some skill there. Then the F-18 did a mach .98 fly by. Also had a B-25 flyby. Crazy stuff. I cant wait till next year. Did any of you get to make it? There must of been 200,000 people there easily. Forgot the camera but i will find some on the net and post them.

I am looking at getting myself some cheap wheels for spring/summer. Maximum price of $3000 CAD I would really like an Achieva (1994 or 1995 is my preference). I have seen a total of 3 GM ads since I've came back to the USA 9 days ago. The sad thing is, one was for the the Cadillac Escalade, the other was for the GMC Acadia, both these ads were on TV, the other add I saw was for the Pontiac G8, it was an internet ad. These are not the vehicles GM needs to be pushing in the days of 4 bucks a gallon gas, which is surely to go higher. They should be showing ads that show GM vehicles that get 30 mpg or more, once again GM shoots itself in the foot.

This weekend, while we were working on the lawn, I had Tammy move the Vette away from the garage so I could take care of the grass around that area. Okay the time has come I have been promising myself some sort of real GPS for my rides but have kept waiting till prices come down. Well after much thought I am seriously considering a Garmin Nuvi 650. Anyone have any thoughts? Experince with one? So yesterday we went to get the T&C out of the tow yard where it was being kept. Assuming it was drivable the plan was for me to drive it home with my girlfriend and mom following behind me. So, I just thought I'd vent a little since at least some of you know my pain...I was downtown late last night bowling and having some fun with some buddies of mine. A friend of ours organized a car show for a local high school. Apparently, someone had a video camera and put a couple of video compilations on YouTube. It was probably someone from the Mustang club. The show was small, but it was a success financially and actually had a good turn out given the size of the school and the fact that it was an inaugural event. Today is my Regal's 16th birthday. This morning, it had 244,073 miles on the odometer (that's almost 400,000 kilometers!) In this period, other than stuff that normally wears out (belts, hoses, brakes, batteries), I've only fixed the following, in this order: - exhaust donut connecting manifold to tailpipe - water pump - alternator - thermostat by-pass - 2 front wheel bearing assemblies (different times) - tie rod ends - 2 sensors: O2 and knock (different times) That's it. It's a silver '87 with T-tops and a split bench seat, 46k original miles, very clean though not perfect, still titled in original owner's name. The seller wants $8,500 ( a bit high IMO) but he seems eager to sell it and willing to negotiate. The car is quite nice.

I'm going on a two week vacation starting Friday. I'm going by myself at first, to London then Copenhagen. Meeting a friend in a small town in Sweden for a couple days. Then meeting a different friend for a tour of Berlin, Prague, and Vienna. I'll post some pictures when I get back. ps. The Euro doesn't make things convenient yet.
