On the way to work on Thursday morning, 8/23/07, I spotted a couple interesting IL license plates: MINI HUM ... on a Honda Element, which had an "H3" graphic on the rear end (and) BMW AT 40 ... on a Pontiac Grand Am GT Didn't see either one on the way home, though I wasn't paying much attention due to the torrential downpours ... followed by the extensive flooding around town and the house ... and somewhat in our basement.... All right, so before I ask my question, I would like to point out that I am not "technically inclined" when it comes to cars. I know where vital fluids go and how to change them, but that is the extent of it. So, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to most things. I was thinking about this on my drive home from work. I drive a car with a column-mounted shifter. Where exactly is the gearbox? Is it in the same place as a car with a floor-mounted shifter? Or in a different place? How does the gearbox know to disengage park for instance in either form? I honestly want to know, and you know, become a little more educated about the car I drive. [/noob]

The Dealer found an appropriate Cobalt with the Appropriate Equipment and agreed to take back the G5 I bought in May... So I'm now driving a Slate-colored 2008 Cobalt LT. I've only noticed two differences from the 2007 G5 (except for now having the safety features I paid for )- and those are the body colored bumper trim and the instant fuel mileage gauge (very welcome addition). They switched over my iPod Interface and Tripletred tires for free- I just have to have Nitrogen put back in them (ugh- there's 20$ I'll never see again). I'm thinking of putting on the 2009 Wheelcovers after seeing this picture here... seems attractive enough. I may add Tire Pressure Senso…

I'm starting to wonder if, perhaps, I might have gotten scammed in some fashion and if I should go ahead and get a refund. Here's the story. Let's see what you think. On Tuesday, July 27th, I purchased a guitar from eBay, an '84 G&L Superhawk (for those of you who are familiar with Alice In Chains, Jerry Cantrell uses the one-pickup version of the Superhawk called the Rampage). I was previously the high bidder in the auction (ended on the 26th), but the auction closed with the reserve not being met. I get a message through eBay the following day (the day I bought the guitar) with a Second Chance Offer, the seller saying he would let me have the guitar for $360 bucks…

Just wanted to check in and say hi, and that I'm doing ok. I moved into my new house at the beginning of February. Still getting things organized, and I don't have a computer yet, so I only get to go online once a week or so, mostly only to check my emails. All right, so I'm cruising around tonight in the truck, blowing off some steam after being at work and leaving from the hospital visiting the little girl and wife in while the little girl cooks for a little while under the lights (she has Jaundice). I'm on the interstate, cruising at about 65, relatively light traffic. A StumpJumper (Ford Crown Victoria with 24" + wheels on it so it now has 2-ft ground clearance) blows past me like I'm sitting still. I decide to follow him to see where the fire is, crank down on the pedal, throw it into 2nd and listen to the quad exhaust pipes thunder (if only I'd finally done the flame thrower kit for the pipes it woulda been a hell o…

Missing centenarians cause angst in aging Japan Japan prides itself on the world's longest life expectancy but is struggling with a disturbing footnote to that statistic - revelations that hundreds of people listed as its oldest citizens are either long dead or haven't been heard from for decades. The mystery of the missing centenarians has captured the attention of this rapidly graying nation with reports of scamming relatives and overworked social workers and sad tales of old people, isolated and forgotten, simply slipping out of touch with society. The story unfolded in late July when police discovered that Sogen Kato, who would have been 111 and was thought to be T…

Besides 1 Cadillac CTS smaller lease ad, a small Hummer ad, and a sliver of a dealer saying they'll sell any 05 over $150 over invoice, there are no other new GM products being advertised in this weekends edition of the Autos/Drivetime in the Portland, OR newspaper (the Oregonian). In comparison; honda = 7 (not inc. acura) toyota = 7 (not inc. lexus) Mazda = 4 Subaru = 5 VW = 4 (not inc. Audi) nissan = 6 (not inc. infiniti) Chrysler = 15 (not inc. Over the weekend, I logged into my State Farm account to pay my homeowners insurance...I saw the listing of my policies--my home owners insurance, 4 car policies..then I realized one of the car policies was for a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe...which I don't own. Clicked on the details, and it's a policy for a guy in another town 50 miles away with the same first and last name, different middle initial. What a screwup. Called up my agent this morning, they were unaware of it but said they'd fix it.. I spent almost the last 5 years building insurance claims and policy software, so I'm amazed at how something like this could happen (if State Farm's data model is anything li…

Did the Astro and Safari vans have a lot of issues with build quality. I was at work at Canadian Tire and in 4 hours, 3 people called to ask if we carried a replacement mirror for an Astro. First one I thought was a coincidence, then the second one was on the phone and it started to get me wondering. I had about 2 cases of that last Tuesday I worked. I asked everybody if they had already been in or sent somebody in looking for that but they said no. This is kind of odd because that was just 5 cases in 2 weeks or technically 2 work days. But we didn't carry them so I told everybody to go to the dealer for the new mirror. Has anyone else heard of this happening? The driver'…

These days, all the talk is about how Detroit is losing X amount of market share each year to imports. Well, I did a little thinking about it tonight and have written up this nice little example to show it in a different light of thinking: For simplicity's sake, I'll only deal with 4 companies and small numbers In 1900, there are two companies, GM and Ford. Each company sells 1 car in that year, meaning that they each hold 50% market share. Then in 1950, a newcomer, Mercedes, comes to the US market. While GM and Ford have each sold 10 cars, Mercedes sells 2 cars that year. Calculating that out with 22 cars total for that year, GM's market share is 45%, …

My Dad replaced his '03 Dodge Dakota with a brand-new Inferno Red '06 Dakota today. It was an impulse buy to say the least. A water-pump had gone on his '03 earlier today, so he brought it directly to the dealer for service. Instead of coming home with a repaired '03, he came home with a new '06. The dealer practically gave the thing away (he had several months left on his original lease). It's a fully-loaded Dakota Laramie complete with the 4.7-liter V-8, leather interior, 17" Aluminum/Chrome Wheels, upgraded Infinity sound-system w/ in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 player, SIRIUS Satelite radio, and just about every other imaginable option. Beyond the Camaro and the Volt, there seems to be very little to be excited about in the future anymore regarding GM. When you sit down and look at all of the facts and rumors, well, it does look quite depressing over at GM. The Insignia will not be coming to North America unchanged from its Opel form (even though it has been stated that Saturn and Opel will become one and the same); the Beat will not be coming to North America either, only the Trax, despite the concept's popularity here; there has been no back-up plan for Zeta; the W-Body Impala and Cobalt will live on past the end of the decade; Alpha has been delayed six months; future product plans for Pontiac are b…

Well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film of all time, James Cameron's Avatar is bulldozing all the competition. Have you seen it? I took my mother to see it yesterday at her request, and I must say, even with the heavy-handed message(s) and well-worn love story angle, it was beautifully done. We saw it in 2-D, and I'd go back to see it in 3-D, wow, what a way to light up the screen.

So what kicked off this search was my reading Oldsmoboi's post, "If Mazda survives that long", and thinking, "What a wierd thing to say!". It got me thinking, I wonder if Mazda is only doing well here in Canada. So here are some graphs I dug up. Mazda outsells Nissan here in Canada, where in the US they get beaten almost 4-to-1. Also, note the American GM-Ford-Toyota podium vs. Ford-Chrysler-GM in Canada.

I have an interesting one-afternoon mini-project that I want to tackle. I have the GM Accessories premium floor mats for my Cobalt, and while they're great at catching dirt, very durable, and embarrasingly easy to clean, I have one problem with them: The tan accents on them are rather ugly and don't go well with my car's inside at all. My solution: mask off the accents and brush on some type of silver paint to cover the tan up. Does anyone know of a type of brush-on paint that will will flex with the mat so that it won't crack easily and last for a long time? Something that soaks into the mat would be ideal, because I have no reason to want to see the tan again. TIA

I just learned yesterday that the "Back to the Future - The Ride" has closed and is in the process of being demolished in Universal Studios Orlando.... and that the one in Universal Studios Los Angeles is set to close for good in 20 days (September 3). So if you're in CA, a fan of this ride, and want one last chance to ride it, do so before it closes for good on September 3. And just fyi... the ride that will be built on the BTTF's site in both parks will be a Simpson's ride. I sad and happy at the same time.

Hey everybody, I'm taking a trip home to Ohio from New Jersey for the first weekend in December. I am really really interested in purchasing a Cruze Eco - probably an automatic, as my boyfriend doesn't know how to drive manual. I doubt I'd be able to find a Cruze Eco for rent, but I was looking to rent a Cruze, hopefully with the 1.4 turbo for my trip. Does anyone know which rental agency have Cruze's in their fleet? If I can't find a Cruze I'll just be taking the old Grand Prix for another trip! I am about 9-12 months away from looking for a new car, and I figured, a 550 mile stint behind the wheel would tell me how I like the Cruze, as far as comfort and travel…

I hi-jacked my teens X Box One who is gone for three weeks, because I want to play Forza til my eyeballs bleed. But, I am frustrated. I purchased the Fast & Furious pack to drive a couple sweet old mopars, but I honestly don't know where or how to find them. They are not on in My Car list. The only care I can find there is my default. This is the strangest game. I just drive all around trying to score lame points. I just want race and don't know how. I must have rented the wrong game. Sucks so far, but looks great on my new 4K big screen. Any tips out there. Any good sites anyone can suggest. I don't mind cheats either, thankie

Its two years old already but I just got this G3 DVD. Recorded in Denver in 03 Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen Old guitar player and fan of Joe that I am I just sat and watched in awe of the talent of todays modern Wizards, separately. Then in the end they do three jams together. The second was Jimi's Little Wing and I just feel apart. Was so good to see that these masters paid tribute and remember from where they came. Bless ya Jimi ! Anger, he smiles .towering in shiny metalic purple armor Queen jelously, Envy waits behind him .her firey green gown sneers at the grassy ground Blue are the life giving waters taking for granted .they quietly unde…

I've been on a classical kick lately. I feel really stressed and I'm not sure exactly why, so I turn to classical for some relief. I prefer dark, brooding classical. I've been compiling a list on playlist, here's a link to what I have so far. Any suggestions? Playlist

On the sixth day God turned to the angel Gabriel and said "Today I am going to create a land called Canada. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty, it shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, beautifully sparkling lakes bountiful with carp and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, rivers stocked with salmon.." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, they shall be known as the most friendly people on the Earth." "But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generou…

Ok, maybe I'm just imagining things, but I remember people on here talking about a two door Blazer, like the GMT-400's of yore, and wishing there would be a GMT-900 version. Now didn't someone on this site do a sketch of what it should look like? Something along the lines of this? Because I happened to be browsing on Google for GMT-900, and this sketch came up, but on a different forum, and the poster is called "opiated" http://www.nfscars.net/forum/showthread.php?p=308698 Maybe it's someone off this site, but I'm not too sure. You might have to scroll up to see it.

Why is asking for and/or accepting the help of others so seemingly taboo? I'm exhausted and so tired I can't even sleep, which is not good, since I have to be at work Thursday and Friday. But, trying to do my best to help my parents at home after their surgeries (Mom donated a kidney to Dad), while doing what I need to do ... and trying to make my sister understand that I AM helping Dad and Mom ... is starting to grate on my nerves. I love helping Dad and Mom, especially after the sacrifices they have made, but when they won't LET me help them as my sister insists I need to ... it frustrates me. Thus the somewhat re-worded, semi-rhetorical query I posed to start thi…
