William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 20, 2012 Back in September, we reported on Hyundai was developing ten-speed automatics for the Genesis and Equus sedans. Today, Hyundai has confirmed to Car & Driver, that yes they’re working on ten-speed automatics. “We confirmed that it [the ten-speed] is a ‘go project’ for development,” a Hyundai rep told Car & Driver. Hyundai isn’t saying when we’ll see the new transmission or what vehicles that it will be in. Car & Driver speculates that the new transmission could end up the Accent and Elantra. After teasing us for a bit, Hyundai has finally pulled the curtains back on the first model from the new high-performance N division - the 2018 i30 N. It certainly looks the part with new bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler, and the choice of 18 or 19-inch wheels. The i30 N's interior comes with new sport seats with blue stitching, a new steering wheel with blue buttons for the different driving modes, and aluminum pedals. Under the i30 N's hood is a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four with 246 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. An optional Performance Pack boosts horsepower to 271. Power is routed to the front wheels through a six-speed manual. 0-60 mph is said to…

The Korean-language Hyundai company blog has released two pictures of the new 2013 Genesis coupe due out at the North American International Auto Show in January. The pictures show the coupe falling into line with Hyundai’s design language. The front end borrows some design cues from the new Veloster with its complex front fascia. Front headlights are more stylized to the vehicle and and LED fog lights nestled low in the front give the coupe a touch of class. Around back, the taillights have also been changed. Source: Autoblog, Carscoop Edit: Carscoop has gotten it's hand on more pictures of the South Korean specification Genesis coupe which show more of exterior and i…

The Hyundai Elantra is one of the highest rated vehicles in it's class for MPG, with the car receiving an EPA rating of 29 City/40 Highway. But many people can't seem to match the EPA rating and that has caused a consumer group to take action. Consumer advocacy group Consumer Watchdog announced this week that it will be urging the EPA to re-test the Elantra due to complaints from consumers about the MPG. “The Elantra has attracted an unusual number of consumer complaints about real-world mpg averaging in the mid-20s, far from Hyundai’s stated average of 33,” said Consumer Watchdog in a statement. Hyundai rates the Elantra at 33 MPG combined. However, reviewers and peop…

This is the very first ad that is on the May 2008 issue of Car and Driver. It's really nothing special or fansy, but a usual Hyundai ad, but.... Also, the magazine has this, Hyundai did a public taste test(?), and came out with the grill winner.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2012 During the press launch of the new Hyundai Elantra Coupe and GT, Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik revealed that the company is considering performance versions of the Coupe and GT. Krafcik didn’t elaborate on details, but if given the green light, the Elantra Coupe and GT would get turbocharged engines (possibly from the Veloster), stiffer suspension, upgraded exhaust, and a tweaked interior. Hyundai has finally released more details on the next-generation 2019 Santa Fe crossover. Like the current-generation Santa Fe, Hyundai will offer two variants. The standard Santa Fe will offer seating for up to five people, while a larger Santa Fe XL will likely carry up to seven. Hyundai is making the new Santa Fe look more SUV-like than crossover. It features a boxy shape with muscular lines. Overall length measures out to 187.8 inches, up 2.8-inches over the Santa Fe Sport. The interior looks quite handsome with an updated dash design, optional leather upholstery, a large screen for the instrument cluster, and a seven-inch infotainment system. Th…

Purchasing a car at a dealership is a stressful and painful experience: Finding the right vehicle, dealing with various sales and finance people, mountains of paperwork, and so on. Hyundai is hoping a new program will make the experience slightly better. Hyundai Shopper Assurance promises to streamline the buying process with four key parts; fair-market pricing (MSRP minus incentives and dealer discounts), flexible test drives at a customer's place of choice, streamlined purchasing process, and three-day money back guarantee. “Shopper Assurance is the next step in that tradition and is car buying made simple. We expect this to be a differentiator, as our research…

Hyundai has announced that is has developed the world's first road noise countering active noise control system. While active noise control is available in many makes and models, it is limited to when the noise is constant and predictable. Hyundai's new system is able to analyze noise at a much faster pace. The digital sound processor can respond to a noise in 0.002 seconds. Cabin microphones constantly monitor road noise and then the speaker system emits sound waves that cancel out drone or engine roughness. Hyundai says they are able to decrease cabin noise by up to 3dB. That means that noise is cut nearly in half as compared to running without RANC. In EVs that…

SPIED: 2011 Hyundai Elantra Our very own member, CanadianBacon94, managed to snap these photos of the Hyundai's next Elantra undergoing cold weather testing in International Falls, MN. The details are still covered up, but we can tell that the overall shape of the new Elantra is much more rakish than today's Elantra. No doubt Hyundai is aiming to push the Elantra upmarket as is the trend for the class. Expect Hyundai to aim it squarely at the class leaders when it debuts as a 2011 model.

After launching a number of teasers and doing a slow drip of information, Hyundai has finally revealed the Ioniq to the South Korean marketplace. If you're wondering about the name, it is a mashup of "ion" and "unique". The Ioniq's exterior is largely diticated on aerodynamic effiency. The shape is very familar to the likes of the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. But Hyundai says the design gives the Ioniq e a drag coefficient of just 0.24. Now the big thing with the Ioniq is that is capable of having a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains thanks to a new platform specifically built for this purpose. At the moment, Hyundai is dishing out the specs on t…

The Hyundai Veloster is a departure for the Korean automaker. With a unique style and a asymmetrical door layout, the Veloster has been the black sheep when compared to other models. But a new report says the Veloster may not get a second act. An unnamed Hyundai executive tells GoAuto.com.au that the company is currently debating whether or not to do a second-generation Veloster. “It still has not been decided. There is still debate as to whether it will happen.” Last year, the Veloster sold 60,000 units worldwide. Over half of those were delivered to North America where the model experienced a decline. The Veloster is expected to get a mid-cycle refresh in the near-f…

This morning in South Korea, Hyundai unveiled the 2018 Kona subcompact crossover. This is a big deal for the Korean automaker as it is the brand's first subcompact crossover. The Kona stands out from Hyundai's other crossovers thanks a polarizing design. Up front, the Kona features Hyundai's new mesh grille that debuted on the 2018 Sonata. The split headlights resemble those found on the Jeep Cherokee. A slim vent above the grille, flared out fenders with cladding, and a two-tone roof finish off the design. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled …

Hyundai is pouring $1.8 billion by 2020 for a new offensive in commercial vehicles. This new offensive will include the U.S. getting some of these new vehicles. According to Reuters, the majority of this investment will go into research and development of vans, trucks, and buses. The remainder will go into raising production of current models. Commercial vehicle sales are expected to rise 30 percent in each of the next five years and Hyundai want a nice slice of it. Currently, sales of Hyundai's commercial vehicles fell in all the markets it sells in at the moment. Hyundai also plans on introducing "premium models in North America and Europe." Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 Hyundai Accent What is the Hyundai Accent SE? After a week behind the wheel, it does not strike us as a cheap car. It's roomy, solid, well equipped, and offers a decent dollop of true driving fun. Plus there's that Hyundai 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, along with its EPA-estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. If you're in the market for a cheap — no, make that "affordable" — vehicle, what's not to like? Edmunds

Hyundai's N performance division is beginning to make itself known with the i30 N for Europe and the Veloster N for North America. According to Auto Express, there is an internal debate going on as to what the 'halo' mode…

Hyundai has revealed a couple pictures of the next-generation Santa Fe crossover. The new model looks nothing like the current model with a more imposing profile. Up front, Hyundai has taken some ideas from the subcompact Kona with a similar grille shape and very slim headlights. Hyundai says the new Santa Fe is longer and wider than the outgoing model. Inside, the Santa Fe appears to be more premium with leather seats, stitching on the dash, and a new instrument cluster with a center mounted screen. Hyundai drops minivan plans Automaker will concentrate on SUV, sport wagon By Charles Child Automotive News / August 26, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=13153 Hyundai Motor America has dropped plans to sell a traditional minivan next year. Instead, the company says it will add a seven-passenger SUV. Later, it will offer a six-passenger sport wagon. “We felt the best strategy was to leave the traditional minivan for others,” says CEO Robert Cosmai. Hyundai wants to “stay appropriately differentiated from other brands.” The unibody SUV, about the same size as a Honda Pilot, will go into production in late 2006. The minivan, dubbed the Ent…

The Hyundai Sonata is likely to make a big splash with its good looks when it hits dealers in a few weeks. One thing that was missing from the original release of the Sonata was an up-level engine option. To review, the Sonata can be optioned with a 191 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a 180 horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with a wide peak torque band and 195 lb.-ft. Gone is the 245 horsepower 2.0-liter turbo. Back in April, Hyundai confirmed that it would produce an N-Line version of the car with 275 horsepower. That car is likely to be debuting at the LA Auto Show later this month. The kicker is the N-line is not the full performance edition like …

At the New York Auto Show this week, Hyundai unveiled the 2025 Hyundai Tuscon. New Dashboard and Twin 12.3-Inch Screens The exterior styling updates, largely consisting of a front fascia update, are subtle. Inside, Hyundai made the interior more open and airy with a new, lower-height dashboard featuring a panoramic gauge and infotainment screen. The screens consist of twin 12.3-inch displays with crisper colors and graphics, as well as faster processing speeds. While the screens can control all functions of the car, Hyundai still inc…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 17, 2012 Last month, Hyundai and Kia announced they had overstated their claims for fuel economy on a number of 2011 to 2013 model year vehicles. Now, the starting point of this whole incident could be from a phone call by a vice-president of an American automaker. Automotive News reports that Margo Oge, retired head of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality got a phone call from a "credible" senior VP of a domestic automaker that accused the two Korean brands of ""cheating" to get inflated mpg numbers." Oge didn't divulge the VP or the automaker. Automotive News then contacted Chrysler, Ford, and G…

Like it or not, people are buying up crossovers and certain automakers are having problems to keep them in stock. Hyundai is one of those due to production constraints at their various factories. Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski said the compact Tucson would be outselling the Elantra - the automaker's best seller - if it weren't for constraints. But Autoblog has learned about a new plan that Hyundai will be enacting to boost production, along with bringing more crossovers to market. The first of the plan involves adding production of the Santa Fe Sport to the Montgomery, AL plant. Hyundai has brought in the tooling and soon will be built alongside the Elantra …

Hyundai is hoping their new performance sub-brand will help reverse a downward trend in sales. The N high-performance brand made its official debut this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show with three concepts and the announcement that production N models would begin rolling out in 2017. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 2, 2012 Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years or so, you have most likely seen the ads from Hyundai touting they sell more vehicles that get 40 MPG on the highway than any other automaker in the U.S. Well, those ads are done as Hyundai and Kia admitted to overstating the estimated fuel economy posted on window stickers of about 900,000 vehicles sold since late 2010. This announcement comes in part from an EPA investigation which couldn't replicate fuel mileages Hyundai and Kia had claimed on window stickers. The investigation found out that 41% of vehicles sold by the two automakers are…

Hyundai and Kia are in a unique position. The two companies compete with each other in many segments even though the two are under the same roof. Despite the inevitable sales cannibalization arising from this, the two have enjoyed remarkable growth in recent years. But this leads to a question; should Hyundai and Kia stay where they're at or should they try to differentiate themselves? Well the two companies will do both. "One of our group's biggest agendas is to differentiate Hyundai and Kia and minimise cannibalisation. It is true that there is competition and cannibalisation between some models of Hyundai and Kia.," a unnamed executive at Hyundai Motor told Re…

Hyundai has been seeing its sales declined as it doesn't have enough crossovers and SUV to feed the growing demand by consumers. This, in turn, is causing profits to drop, making investors disappointed. Because of this Hyundai is going crazy with cutting costs. Reuters reports that Hyundai's cost-cutting measures include reducing the number of business-class flights, annual trips for overseas workers to see family, and cutting back on fluorescent light bulbs. "We're trying to address a mismatch between the market trend and our product line-up. That's a longer term plan. For now we're trying to save every penny," said a source. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 21, 2012 According to Reuters, Hyundai will be introducing a new Sonata in 2014. Hyundai CEO Kim Choong-ho revealed the product update plans at an industry meeting in Seoul, South Korea. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 5, 2012 UPDATE: Yeah, about the under $20,000 pricetag for the Veloster Turbo.. That appears to be bunk. The Truth About Cars got a hold of Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik asking to clarify the $1600 increase. Krafcik said the Veloster Turbo will add $1600 to the cost the Veloster, but with all of the added equipment, the price tag will be over $20,000. We'll see how much over $20,000 tomorrow. As for the Inside Line story, that has pulled a disappearing act. Click on the link and it will take you to a page not found. The orginal story follows below. Hyundai was caught off guard by the rise of crossovers with their car heavy lineup. This has caused their sales to fall down. But the Korean automaker is hoping to change that with the announcement of eight new or redesigned crossover models by 2020. The plan will begin with the launch of the Kona crossover in March and will include a wide range of models from a small A-segment model to 8-seat midsize model taking the place of the Santa Fe. There are also plans for an electric, hydrogen, and diesel powered models. The electric one is likely the Kona. “The Kona is only the beginning of our product revolution for Hyundai. At first glance, a new set of spy photos shows what appears to be a Hyundai Genesis sedan that has been stretched. But according to Automobile Magazine, what we are looking at is the next-generation Equus flagship. The mule appears to be riding on a longer wheelbase. This is hinted by a large piece of sheetmetal riveted behind the rear doors. Also giving some credence that we're looking at the next Equus. Driving along with the mule was a BMW 7-Series. Not much is known about the next-generation Equus, but Automobile Magazine speculates that the model will share the Genesis' platform and come with the option of all-wheel drive. As for when we'll see the model, 2016 or…

Hyundai had a put a lot of confidence into hydrogen being the future power source for vehicles. But much like Toyota, the Korean automaker is realizing that electrics are the way of the future and they might want to jump on the bandwagon soon. Today at a press conference in Seoul, Hyundai announced that it would be placing electric vehicles front and center with plans to launch several long-range EVs in the coming years. This includes an electric version of the Kona early next year and an electric sedan for Genesis in 2021 that is expected to have a range of 310 miles. Hyundai also confirmed a report by Reuters saying the company is working on a dedicated EV platform…

With its distinctive coupe styling and a turbocharged 3.3L V6, the GT Concept got a lot of love. The new model gets a dramatically restyled front end that is similar to the HCD-14 Concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show this year. The low-set, vertical grille is sandwiched between a pair of headlights. The HCD-14's roofline has also been carried over to the Genesis. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 8, 2012 With the news of Hyundai and Kia saying they have overstated fuel economy numbers on a certain number of models, the lawsuit have begun to come out of the woodwork. Earlier this week, a lawsuit was filled in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio against the two companies. The lawsuit seeks unspecified attorney fees along with damages for U.S. buyers or leasers of one of the 900,000 Hyundai or Kia models. The suit also asks the court to allow people who own or lease a Hyundai and Kia that live in the state of Ohio to back out of their agreements. Then yesterday, the two companies were hit…

Back in June, we reported Hyundai was planning a coupe version of the Elantra to be shown at this month’s LA Auto Show. Well, someone at Automotive.com caught some pictures of what is presumed to be the Elantra coupe. At first, it looks like a Honda Civic coupe wearing some covers. But look a little closer and you’ll begin to notice swoopy roofline and the wheels borrowed from the Veloster, telling you this is a Hyundai. The doors on this mule have been extended and roofline goes further down then the sedan. No details have been released regarding the coupe’s engine, transmission or price tag. It’s assumed the sedan’s 1.8L 148 HP four-cylinder lives under the hood and w…

The Hyundai HCD-15 Santa Cruz concept shown at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show is the automaker's idea of a compact truck with such features as seating for five and a unique bed that can extend to provide more space. With the concept getting raves from the press and auto show visitors, Hyundai has decided to investigate the truck idea further. Reuters reports that a unnamed Hyundai executive told reporters a pickup truck is under consideration. But Park Byung-cheol, a director at Hyundai's R&D division said there were "hurdles" to the production of a truck. Byung-cheol didn't go into detail about what 'hurdles' are. Hyundai's N performance division has its eye on building a hotted-up Kona. Albert Biermann, head of the N sub-brand tells Auto Express that he has asked engineers to begin work on a test mule. It has to be the i30 N powertrain, really. Of course, we can give Kona different specifications on suspension and steering, although there are some common components we can use in that area as well, because it’ll be front-wheel drive, like the i30 N. We've watched with a sense of awe as Hyundai has gone from a discount also-ran brand into a genuine industry powerhouse in startlingly short order. But we've also long suspected that its vehicles have gained so much ground by being among the best values in their respective segments – not because they've necessarily been the best vehicles to drive. The addition of the Genesis Coupe may have served notice that Hyundai isn't content to just be the industry's value leader (see Battle of the Sixes), but the keystone draw of most of the brand's offerings has remained their affordability. Which is not to suggest this is a bad thing – Hyundai's steroidal growth speaks to the inhe…

The EPA has released the fuel economy numbers for the 2020 Hyundai Venue and they look pretty darn good. Remember that the Hyundai Venue is offered with a choice of two transmissions, a 6-speed manual and a CVT. The CVT is the fuel miser with a rating of 30 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The manual clocks in at 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The closest competitor, the Nissan Kicks does a little better at 31 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined. Other non-hybrid crossovers in the segment are a little bit larger and a bit more powerful, so the Venue beats them there. The Venue is powered by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder producin…

I know this is just an artist's rendering, but every other mainstream midsize sedan maker needs to watch their back if the next gen Hyundai Sonata turns out to look anything similar to these renderings. A Hyundai midsize sedan that looks like this would surely steal sales away from the Camry/Accord/Altima segment mainstays. I would possibly consider buying one if it turns out to look like this (and I am definitely not a big Hyundai fan). Visit My Website Source: GlobalMotors.net P.S. The accompanying article is from December. For some reason, I didn't see these renderings until today. If these renderings are old news, then I apologize.

Automakers know they have to stay on top of changing trends to be competitive or they'll end up behind the pack. That is currently the case with Hyundai as they are playing catch up to meet the growing demand for crossovers. Starting off with powertrains, the 4.6L Tau V8 which was the Genesis' only V8 engine until last year will be dropped. Hyundai has been selling the Genesis sedan (what we know as the G80) in the United Kingdom since 2015 and has recently been axed. The reason? Hyundai only sold 50 Genesis sedans - not 500, but just 50. "The Genesis was never built for the European market, it was conceived for the Korean and American markets. It shows a saloon car with a 3.8-litre engine is not really what is demanded in Europe, and in particular in the UK," said Hyundai UK managing director Tony Whitehorn to Autocar. "We brought it in as much just to sample it: lots of people told us they’d driven a Genesis in America and liked it. It was also available in Australia and had done well there, so i…

A fresh stack of spy photos of the upcoming Hyundai Veloster N have made their way on to the web this week. The photos show the mule losing some of the camo that we have seen in previous spy shots and are able to pull some new details. The most apparent item is a new rear wing mounted the roof. We can also make out a set of large tailpipes and the front grille extending towards the bottom of the bumper, possibly hinting that there is an intercooler hiding behind it. We also got an idea of what is in store for the standard Veloster. Hyundai has decided to drop the split-window liftgate of the current model and go for a regular hatchback. Hyundai Accent excels in quality, styling, safety and price By Paul & Anita Lienert With its latest redesign for model year 2006, Hyundai's Accent leaps into the upper ranks of the subcompact class. While the concept isn't quite the real deal, it gives us some clues of what to expect. The overall design is very much a classic concept car with a almost vertical front end, large grille, and rear-hinged doors. Aside from those dream features, the HCD-14 does feature some design cues that might end up on the next Genesis like hard-edged body creases running along the side of the car and the coupe-like roofline running all the way to the end of vehicle. Late this year will see the launch of two new EVs, the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Ioniq EV. The Bolt is the big story as it will offer a 200 mile range. The Ioniq EV will only have an 110 mile range. But that doesn't mean Hyundai isn't thinking about doing an electric vehicle with more range. Byung K. Ahn, director of Hyundai’s Eco-Vehicle Performance Development group says the Korean automaker is planning to launch a 200 mile EV in 2018, and then a 250 mile EV two years later. It would be easy to think that Hyundai will just improve the Ioniq EV to reach these ranges, but Ahn said it wouldn't the Ioniq. For a vehicle to have a range of 200 miles or more, it requires …

The Hyundai Santa Cruz has been a source of wonder - will they put into production or not? For the longest time, Hyundai's U.S. office say they wanted to do it, but it was the home office that had to make the final call. It seems we have a final decision. “We have made the decision. We have not made the announcement,” said Dave Zuchowski, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America to Motor Trend. That decision is a yes. Zuchowski said they are busy at work on a production version. The Santa Cruz's design went in for a review earlier this month and they are close to finalizing it. The production model is expected to use the same platform as the Tucson and could…

Hyundai today released images of their latest Hyundai Sonata refresh for 2024. This is a rather quick turnaround as the current Hyundai Sonata was released in 2019 as a 2020 model. This could be the last hurrah for the Sonata because it is rumored that Hyundai will ax the Sonata nameplate at the end of this run. While the current Sonata is one of the more handsome designs in the dwindling sedan market, Hyundai felt the refresh was necessary to bring the Sonata in line with their EV lineup. The visual similarities between the 2024 Sonata and the recently released Hyundai Ioniq 6 aren't by accident. While riding on the same platform, externally, the 2024 Sonata ado…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 17, 2012 Hyundai has a bit of a problem. Currently, the Korean automaker has 5% market share in the U.S., but their supply of vehicles is very constrained. How constrained? Using the traditional measure of dealer inventory in "days supply," Hyundai's supply is very very low. At the moment, Hyundai's average at 25-27 days, or less than one month's supply. The Azera stands at 12 days supply. To put this into perspective, out of a 1,000 vehicles sitting on U.S. dealer lots, 25 of those are Hyundais. “We know we will be short from a production point of view. We're definitely passing up sales," said John Krafcik, Hyund…
