DETROIT, Jan. 6 - General Motors expects to reduce the billion-dollar losses at its struggling North American operations this quarter, as its cost-cutting efforts take effect, G.M.'s chief executive, Rick Wagoner, said today. Speaking in a rare interview with a small group of journalists at G.M.'s headquarters here, Mr. Wagoner declined to say when the automaker's North American operations would return to profitability. But he did emphasize that G.M. had no plans to file for bankruptcy protection. And Mr. Wagoner said he anticipated that stronger sales of new vehicles, including a restyled group of sport utility vehicles, combined with the company's restructuring should…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 14, 2013 General Motors' current CEO, Dan Akerson, could be stepping down as early as next year, according to a report from Reuters. Sources tells Reuters that Akerson hasn't formally notified GM's board of directors of any plan to step down, but could come to fruition some next year. "I assume at some point he (Akerson) will decide he has done what he has wanted to do and will step down, but no one has a date for that," said a source. Now the board has a succession plan in place if Akerson makes a decision to step down. But according to sources, the board hasn't set a timeframe to begin a search for a new CEO…

I have a few questions about the 2007 agreement. First, is GM getting rid of all HMO's or just select hmo's?? And second, people that are on non core jobs will have to make a desicion. One, retire if elegible. Two, quit. Three, stay on their non-core job and work for less money. Or four, flow back to the line. Now if he or she decides to flow back to the line they will bump somebody with a lesser seniority date. Now when all the bumping is said and done where do the people that got bumped go. And are only new hires going to be the ones filling the non-core jobs?? And last but not least who is elegible for the attrition program?

Chosun News Story - Korea As GM Daewoo Soars, Kia Crumbles After Korea suffered the financial crisis of the late 1990s, Kia Motors and Daewoo Motor, two of the top three automakers in the country at the time, changed hands. Kia was bought out by Hyundai, becoming Hyundai Kia Automotive Group in 1998 and Daewoo, which went bankrupt in 2000, was sold to GM of the United States two years later. Nine years have passed since Kia was sold, and seven since Daewoo went belly up. In that time these companies have traveled in opposite directions. Thanks to stable labor relations, Daewoo has grown rapidly as a production base for small and compact GM-branded cars. In contrast, …

June 26, 2008 - 3:30 pm ET TORONTO (Reuters) -- Canadian autoworkers acknowledged that General Motors' decision to close a Oshawa, Ontario, truck plant next year was irrevocable, a union leader said on Thursday after a meeting with company officials. Eventually, if someone keeps hitting you over the head with a sledgehammer, you're going to wake up," said Buzz Hargrove, president of the Canadian Auto Workers, said at the union's headquarters. Hargrove said GM told the union it may decide to build a new model in its Oshawa car plant, where the new Chevrolet Camaro muscle car is set to begin production, but he added the situation looked bleak. …

General Motors is making some major changes in Russia. The automaker announced today that it will withdraw Opel and mainstream Chevrolet models in December, and focus on the premium segment of the Russian market with Cadillac and iconic Chevrolet models (Camaro, Corvette, and Tahoe). “This change in our business model in Russia is part of our global strategy to ensure long-term sustainability in markets where we operate. This decision avoids significant investment into a market that has very challenging long-term prospects,” said GM President Dan Ammann. General Motors Corp.'s new chief executive said Tuesday that he will not reduce his salary to $1 a year like his ousted predecessor, Rick Wagoner. Fritz Henderson, GM's former chief operating officer, said at a news conference that his pay will remain unchanged now that he is head of the troubled automaker. His base salary as COO was cut 30 percent to about $1.3 million this year when GM accepted government loans. Wagoner had agreed to accept a salary of $1 as part of the Detroit automaker's request for assistance. The company has been staying afloat because of the $13.4 billion GM has received since Dec. 31, and Wagoner stepped down as CEO on Monday as a condition fo…

For starters, Akerson said General Motors has a goal of reducing vehicle weight by 15% by 2016. This will be accomplished by using lightweight materials like aluminum, carbon fiber, and magnesium. Akerson says the move to lightweight materials could improve fuel economy by more than 6.5%. Akerson also said the company is working on two electric vehicles; one that comes with a 100 Mile range and another vehicle with a 200 Mile range. BY MICHAEL ELLIS FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER General Motors Corp. shares closed above $30 for the first time in more than nine months on Tuesday amid growing expectations that the troubled automaker could post an operating profit today. The higher stock price put billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian back in the black on his nearly $1.7-billion investment in GM stock. And now, with SGM and PATAC marking their 10th anniversaries in 2007, GM has achieved an even more remarkable milestone: It has become the first glob…

GM is Among Both Most and Least Trusted Firms in US By BRADLEY JOHNSON | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/14/06, 9:02 am et General Motors is loaded with debt and is the subject of bankruptcy speculation. GM Wants 10% of Asian Market by '10 General Motors Corp., its market share shrinking at home, is turning to Asia to boost its profits, and aims to capture 10% of the region's market by 2010, the U.S. automaker's regional chief said 10%. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 20, 2013 Edmunds has learned from industry sources that General Motors is considering a three-cylinder engine for the Cadillac ELR and Chevrolet Volt. The reason for the three-cylinder is to help reduce fuel consumption and vehicle weight, something CEO Dan Akerson mentioned during a speech at a Houston energy conference a couple weeks ago. The proposed idea would have the 1.4L four-cylinder that is used in the Volt and ELR to be replaced by either a 1.0 or 1.2L three-cylinder engine that is currently being developed by GM and its partners in China. If given the green light, the engine would appear in the Volt r…

Link So because US automakers make better large vehicles and therefore sell more they get penalized more? Was CAFE dreamed up by politicians that don't understand math? Seems like required mileage ratings should depend on the class of vehicle. I'm not opposed to gas mileage requirements but it's really not going to force construction companies to trade their 1-ton work truck for a Honda Civic. Trucks are still needed, and this penalizes companies who make good ones and therefore sell more. This is going to hurt US industry more in the process. Did I miss something?

US Treasury Plans For Early Sale Of GM Shares William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 27, 2011 The US government is planning to sell off the remaining share of GM it owns rather than wait for the stock price to get higher to max out the investment. Austan Goolsbee, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers spoke at a breakfast with reporters. "The writing is clearly on the wall that the government is getting out of the GM position. The government never wanted to be in the business of being majority shareholder of GM. It was only to prevent a wider spillover, negative event on the economy. So we're trying to get out of that," s…

General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers are in advanced talks on buyout offers for up to 20,000 hourly employees, setting the stage for the biggest exodus of union workers in recent memory. http://www.motorauthority.com/wp-content/u...V_R8_main01.jpg Australia’s Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) is the successful performance arm of GM-Holden and has been modifying and building its own cars for the past 20 years. GM officials now hope to copy that success in other markets where Holden products are sold and the first of these will be the Middle Eastern market where an E-series HSV Commodore was recently spotted. In the Middle East the cars are sold as Chevrolets hence the name Chevrolet Special Vehicles (CSV). The guys over at DriveArabia managed to get their hands on a list of 2008 models from General Motors Middle East, and one of the cars mentioned was a “CSV…

I am starting to get baffled by the alphabet soup of change. Which new platforms are to be redone or scrapped/replaced for the 2008 and 2009 model year? 2008 - Malibu and related platform? 2009 - Impala and related platform? What about LaX and GP - when are they do for facelift or doomed to the graveyard of monikers? What is moving from FWD to RWD? This would be interesting for everyone's edification.

MARK PHELAN: Don't bury GM yet: It has the vehicles for recovery November 22, 2005 FREE PRESS COLUMNIST General Motors Corp. builds more good cars and trucks today than it has in decades, but it's still saddled with too many losers. Its plant closures should address that and allow GM to stop diverting resources it can't afford to vehicles it doesn't need. It may make sense for Pontiac and Buick to attempt to sell minivans in some alternate universe, but on Earth the boring vehicles only distract GM from coming up with vehicles the public actually wants. Every big automaker has its share of underperforming models -- even Japan's successful automa…

Dear T Charlieville, You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs. Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid. The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of …

" The automaker announced an unlimited data plan for the 4G LTE system that turns its vehicles into mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. In the Chevrolet brand alone, more than 3.1 million vehicles have the capability that allows users to connect up to seven smartphones, tablets or other devices at a time, from distances up to 50 feet. Starting Friday, owners of 4G-capable Chevys, Cadillacs, GMCs and Buicks will be able to pay a flat $20 a month for the service. It's a change from current service plans for limited amounts of monthly data. At Chevrolet, the offers included a gigabyte for $10 a month, four gigs for $20 and 10 gigs for $40." https://www.usatoday.com/story/m…

WASHINGTON — It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism. But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry. Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears an…

It has been almost two months since General Motors announced a compensation fund for families who either lost a loved one or who were injured because of a problem due to the ignition switch. According to the Detroit Free Press, almost 300 people have filed a claim. 100 people who have filed a claim said their loved ones were killed because of defect, while 184 people said their injuries come as a result of the problem. These numbers come from Amy Weiss, a spokeswoman for fund administrator Kenneth Feinberg. The Detroit Free Press says each person who has filed a claim has to provide evidence that it was the defective switch that was the cause of the injury/fatality. If …

GM Announces New Program to Design and Manufacture Electric Motors http://gm-volt.com/2010/01/26/gm-announces-new-program-to-design-and-manufacture-electric-motors/ GM is taking the next critical step to position itself competitively in a future of electrified automobiles. Vice Chairman Tom Stephens is announcing today that GM is expanding its in-house core competency to include the design and manufacture of electric motors. This will make the company the first major US automaker to mass produce its own electric motors. Electric traction motors are a critical component for both hybrid and electric cars. Stephens likens them to the combustion engine, and the bat…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 22, 2013 Electric automaker Tesla has been a tour-de-force over the past year. Sales of the Model S have exceeded expectations; profits are though the roof; the company has been implementing free charging stations across the U.S. for owners and other things. These success have caught the attention of General Motors. More specially, GM CEO Dan Akerson. According to Bloomberg, Akerson has created a small team to study Tesla and how it could affect the company. “He thinks Tesla could be a big disrupter if we’re not careful. New GM Crossovers On An Odyssey of Their Own By Scott Anderson Dec 28, 2006 1:08 PM Link to Original Article @ WardsAuto PALO ALTO, CA – It’s just not cool to make minivans anymore. It’s debatable if minivans ever were cool – just ask any 30-something who grew up sandwiched between a cooler of Capri Sun and mesh bag of soccer balls. But minivans are even less cool if you’re an auto maker on the wrong end of the segment, as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. demonstrated this year. Both domestic auto makers have shut down their minivan programs, leaving the sliding-doors wide open for the leaders: The Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Group’s Dodge Caravan. By no…

Ford pulled off a bit of coup at the Detroit Auto Show last month with the introduction of the 2015 F-150 which features an all-aluminum body to help meet the upcoming fuel efficiency standards. The Wall Street Journal has learned from sources familiar with the matter that General Motors is working on making the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have aluminum bodies. The company has secured contracts with with Alcoa and Novelis Inc. to supply aluminum for the next-generation trucks, due out in late 2018. EDWARD LAPHAM COMMENTARY 8/23/05: Can a U.S.-built car be the next great Euro roadster? By Edward Lapham Automotive News / August 23, 2005 General Motors execs expect big results from the low-volume Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters, which will be image-building halo vehicles for their brands. Initial Solstice sales make it popular, but production is being ramped up slowly, so Pontiac dealers are clamoring for more cars. Some Pontiac dealers are grumbling that GM shouldn't give Saturn dealers a version, even though it goes into production this year. What's less certain is how Europeans will accept the Opel roadster that is expected for 2007.…

When cars were America's idols STATUS: A Cadillac, this one a 1958 Eldorado, topped GM’s “Ladder of Success,” a shrewd marketing strategy that welded a link between who we are and what we drive. --- Dan Neil June 1, 2009 If you were to walk up to a typical New York executive in the 1960s -- think Don Draper in AMC's "Mad Men" -- and tell him that General Motors Corp. would be in bankruptcy by 2009, he would have thought you were delusional, or perhaps a Communist. GM was more than just the world's largest and most admired corporation; it was the final vindication of the American Way, the perfected and even divinely inspired example of democratic capitalism th…

GM back in 2019 rolled out what their BEV platform would be like using the BEV global platform that will evolve in supporting a complete portfolio of BEV or battery electric auto's. The goal of the BEV platform was to use a new GM digital vehicle platform that enables future technology by supporting data processing of up to 4.5 terabytes per hour, a five fold increase over the current electrical architecture at the time with connectivity supporting up to 10 Gbps. This is what would allow GM to have over the air updates to their products for decades to come. https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2019/may/0…

Tuesday, 07/11/06 GM seeks 750 temps to replace 1,300 Spring Hill early retirees 150 down, 600 to go as automaker scurries to train new workers By BUSH BERNARD Staff Writer General Motors Corp. will hire as many as 750 temporary workers this year for its Spring Hill plant, to fill spots left vacant by workers taking early retirement and buyouts. The company has 150 on board now and plans to add 600 more as it loses more than 1,300 longtime employees as part of a work-force reduction. GM is shutting down a half-dozen assembly lines — including one of the two lines in Spring Hill — to bring production in line with shrinking sales. The company won't need the 5,000 pe…

GM Displaces P&G As Top Ad Spender, But Autos Begin To Slide by Joe Mandese, Friday, Dec 2, 2005 7:45 AM EST FUELED BY A 7.3 PERCENT boost in its advertising budget, General Motors Corp. emerged as the nation's largest advertiser during the first nine months of 2005, nudging out alpha marketer Procter & Gamble, which has been cutting back on spending in the conventional media measured by syndicated ad spending researcher Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Despite a 5.6 percent cut by DaimlerChrysler, which slipped behind Ford the nation's third largest advertiser, the auto category has been quite healthy, account for $5.4 billion during the first three quarter…

I've heard this for awhile now, or rumblings at least but this is what GM and the UAW will be doing to replace the massive number of people that are leaving GM due to the early retirement buyouts. Evok and I have speculated in the past that some type of agreement would be conjured up between the Union and General Motors to replace those workers. This is the deal. GM has already began hiring temporary workers at three locations in Metro-Detroit. These temporary workers are being told they will be kept with the company for at least one year. However they will not have health benefits, and will not be considered part of the Union. Once the year passes, if General Moto…
