Cadillac
Cadillac, founded in 1902 in Detroit, quickly gained a reputation for precision and innovation, becoming a leader in American luxury vehicles. Acquired by General Motors in 1909, it set standards with iconic models like the Eldorado and DeVille. Though it faced challenges in the modern era, Cadillac has reinvented itself with bold design and a shift toward electric vehicles, now leading GM’s luxury EV efforts with models like the Lyriq and Celestiq.

It seems a bit odd that Cadillac is doing a special edition model for Japan as they don't sell that many vehicles there. But trying to figure out why just seems like an exercise in futility. Let's just talk about the special edition vehicle in question. This is the Cadillac ATS Luxury Sport Edition which features a set of 19-inch V-spoke alloy wheels with a two-tone look. There is also a set of Brembo brakes and a sports suspension that comes as part of this special edition model. Other items of note include cashmere accents for the interior, and the choice of either crystal white or sable black paint. A turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 272 horsepower and eight-s…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 15, 2013 Remember the days before SUVs became the symbol of luxury. If you wanted a luxurious vehicle back in the sixties or seventies, you went down to your Cadillac or Lincoln dealer and picked up a luxury coupe. Cadillac wants to revisit that idea of a luxury coupe, but bring it into the modern era. That brings us to the Elmiraj Coupe Concept which has made its debut at Pebble Beach Cadillac says the Elmiraj pays tribute to the past and looks toward the future of Cadillac design. The name and proportions of the Elmiraj pays homage to the late sixties Eldorado Coupe, while the design gives us a sneak peek of wha…

The entry-level luxury class could be getting a model from Cadillac. Dave Leone, Cadillac executive chief engineer said in an interview with Road & Track that they are developing a new sedan to sit under ATS. "We are working on something below ATS," said Leone. Leone didn't go into further details about the vehicle but did say "one of our strengths in sedans is that we are known for being rear-wheel drive." Road & Track speculates the new sedan will use the Alpha rear-drive platform. This gives a Cadillac an edge as all of the entry-level luxury sedans are front-wheel drive based. But using Alpha introduces a big problem. As we have noted in our tw…

There's a war going on between Cadillac and Lincoln. With the new Navigator, Lincoln has a very compelling alternative to Cadillac's aging Escalade. But Cadillac is fighting back by dumping a bunch of cash on the hood. Bloomberg obtained a memo sent to Cadillac dealers that announces a new promotion where current lease customers of 2016 Escalades are being offered a $10,000 discount on a new Escalade. Owners of 2016 Escalades have to make do with a $7,500 discount. The promotion runs until the end of May. GM Spokesman Jim Cain confirmed the promotion to Bloomberg. This isn't the first time Cadillac has put a huge amount of money onto the hood of the Escalade. Ba…

It is no secret that General Motors has big ambitions in the electric car space, we talked about back in March. But our chance to see to see the first fruits of this, the Cadillac Lyriq had been delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. But tonight, Cadillac finally revealed the Lyriq in show car form. "Show Car" is important in this context as Cadillac is finalizing various parts of the Lyriq's design - various reports say the design is 80 to 85 percent production ready. This may explain why Cadillac isn't launching the model until late-2022. The design is quite out there with a large pattern grille, vertical LED headlamps, fastback roofline, and rear lights that wrap around…

Cadillac is planning to make some significant changes to their V-Series sub-brand . Speaking to dealers yesterday in Las Vegas, General Motors product chief Mark Reuss said the lineup would expand beginning with the CT6 V-Sport next year - although it will be renamed to the CT6-V. "Beginning with the debut of the CTS-V Sedan in 2004, the V-Series sub-brand sparked new life into Cadillac. As a result of the overwhelming response the CT6 V-Sport received when revealed in early 2018, we've decided to formally make it a V-Series, signaling the expansion of V-Series," said Reuss in a statement. The CT6-V made its official debut at the New York Auto Show in March. It …

For the longest time, Cadillac has been trying to crack the European market. All of its attempts so far have fallen flat. The brand's latest attempt featuring the ATS and CTS has been shelved for the time being due to financial problems and finding better success in China and U.S. That doesn't mean Cadillac has given up. "Clearly our number one priorities are the US and China, but in the longer term there is a role for Cadillac in Europe," said GM President Dan Ammann. Ammann also was realistic about chances the brand has in Europe. "Is it going to be a high-volume contender in the medium to long term future? Probably not. But is there a role for something other than t…

Cadillac is offering 400 of its smallest dealers a buyout if they don't want to be part of the ambitious and contentious Project Pinnacle. Automotive News reports the offers will range from $100,000 to $180,000. The dealers eligible for the buyout sold less than 50 new Cadillac models in 2015. While the 400 dealers make up 43 percent of Cadillac's total number of dealers in the U.S. (around 925), this group only made up 9 percent of total sales last year. Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said the buyouts is to give those an alternative who don't want to forward with the new program. “This is going to be a long, arduous and challenging journey and certai…

Cadillac is undergoing a number of changes. From the appointment of a new head to new models heading out to dealers, and more that are to be revealed. Now, the luxury automaker is moving to a new home. Yesterday, General Motors announced that Cadillac will be moving to a new headquarters in New York City. The new HQ will be located in the SoHo area with a "multipurpose brand and event space in conjunction with modern loft offices." At this time, Cadillac is deciding who will move to the headquarters at this time. However, technical operations will remain in Michigan. The move is expected to finish up next year. “With the relentless upward repositioning of successive new…

July 23, 2012 Drew Dowdell - Managing Editor CheersandGears.com Cadillac is readying a 2.0 turbo version of their full size XTS sedan model according to a diagram obtained by a CheersandGears.com reader. The diagram, sourced from a U.S. Cadillac dealership parts catalog, shows the 2.0T badging along with the FlexFuel badge we are familiar with from other GM vehicles. When we first saw the diagram, we thought we were looking at evidence of a US bound livery model of the XTS similar to Lincoln’s MKT 2.0 Ecoboost. However, a source inside of GM informed us this was not the case, so do not expect to see the 2.0T version on the road if you live in the U.S. This version…

2015 will mark the launch of two Cadillac V-Series models; the ATS-V and CTS-V. But there will more V-Series models in the cars according Cadillac's chief engineer. “The ‘V’ will be on more models than today,” said Dave Leone, chief engineer for GM's luxury brand to The Detroit Bureau. Which cars will get the V treatment is unknown at the moment, but Leone says they will not go crazy with it. “Don’t expect to see an Escalade-V, or an SRX-V. We will focus on platforms which lend themselves to performance driving,” said Leone. Speculation at the moment has CT6 being the next model to get the V treatment. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 27, 2013 Back at the introduction of the 2014 Cadillac CTS at the New York Auto Show in April, Cadillac introduced a new trim called VSport. VSport offers unique styling and performance tweaks to a model. A few months back, Cadillac announced that the XTS would be getting the VSport trim as well. The Detroit News reports that more Cadillacs will be coming with VSport trim. Executives say VSport offers buyers the styling and performance they want without going to a full V model. “In the future you can look to us to expand this idea to additional models, additional vehicle models, and also using the branding for pe…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 8, 2013 Cadillac has been considering adding a large, unibody crossover to their lineup for awhile now. Now it seems that it could wear the Escalade nameplate. "I think there's a lot of equity in Escalade. I'd like to explore the notion of other vehicles that would carry that brand name," said senior vice president of global Cadillac, Bob Ferguson. Ferguson tells Automotive News that he believes there are distinct customers for the SUV and crossover. "There are a number of individuals who just love this vehicle," said Ferguson, but there are others who would say 'I would love something that would give me a diff…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 11, 2012 Following on the heels of introducing the new ATS, Cadillac is thinking about adding a smaller crossover. “We’re looking at options there. I think it would go a little bit more head-to-head with like the X3,” said Kurt McNeil, Cadillac’s vice president of sales. BMW's redesigned X3 has been a hit in the North American market. The new X3 was built with North American consumers in mind, which is the opposite of what Cadillac would have to do in order to profitably expand its portfolio. “The fact that Cadillac is becoming more of a global brand will certainly play a role in that decision,” McNeil said…

As part of their ambitions to compete with European automakers on their home soil, Cadillac was working on a range of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines. According to Automotive News, the upcoming XT4 was expected to have a diesel engine by 2020 and other models would follow. There was also plans about selling diesels for Cadillacs in the U.S. But Cadillac President Steve Carlisle said development has been put on hold. "We have been working on diesel, but the markets may be changing more quickly than we anticipated," he said to AN. "Going forward, we will focus on electrification." The diesel program at Cadillac got hit with a double whammy over the past…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 5, 2013 Cadillac is readying a new ad campaign for the fall that will portray the brand in a new light. AdAge reports that the new campaign will focus on American values, such as anyone can create their own destiny. The main theme of the campaign is "Work Hard. Be Lucky." This is a complete U-Turn from Cadillac's previous ad campaigns which featured the ATS attacking some of the famous roads around the world and Kate Walsh talking about certain models. As AdAge points out, Cadillac's recent campaigns haven't had a coherent theme. Cadillac is keeping quiet on whether the "Work Hard. Be Lucky" will be the tagli…

Earlier this month, Cadillac revealed the CT6 and XT5 in Berlin ahead of their official European launch in September. At the present moment, the brand will be selling the vehicles through 45 dealers in 12 countries. Speaking with Autocar, Cadillac Europe’s head of product management Barnabas Vincze says they plan on doubling that by 2020 as part of a plan to achieve “organic growth” rather than going after volume. This shows in the sales goal as Cadillac wants to boost sales from about 550 vehicles last year to around 900-1000. For the time being, the CT6 and XT5 will be equipped only with gas engines. Down the road, Vincze says “all types of different powertrains wer…

If there is one issue that is top of mind for various folks at Cadillac, it is the lack of crossovers. Their sedan-heavy lineup isn't doing them any favors in a marketplace crazy for crossovers and SUVs. The brand does have some breathing room thanks to increasing sales in China, but they know they need crossovers now. “It’s left us with the obvious difficulty. The core part of our volume lineup is in the market that’s contracting while we are unable, as good as XT5 and Escalade are, we are unable to fully exploit the updraft that’s taking place in the other half of the market,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen to The Detroit News. When the Cadillac CT6 was originally shown in the US back in March, we only saw the standard gasoline models while the plug-in hybrid was shown in Shanghai. Cadillac brought it to the LA Auto Show with some updated information. First, let's review some information about the CT6 Plug-In. The Cadillac CT6 Plug-In uses the same type of liquid cooled batteries found in the Chevrolet Volt. It packs the same number of them as well, 192 cells. Unlike the Volt's T-shape battery configuration, the CT6's are stacked on top of each other directly over the rear axle. Naturally, total battery output also matches the Volt at 18.4 kWh of juice. This is more than double the batte…

The hot thing for luxury automakers aside from crossovers is building electric vehicles to take on the elephant in the room, the Tesla Model. But Cadillac will not be joining this craze, at least not in the near future. Speaking with Automotive News, Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said the automaker will equip most of their lineup with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The decision comes down to tightening regulations, especially in China. "For us, the avenue to ensure that we are able to play in China is going to be through plug-in hybrids," said de Nysschen. There's also the benefit that plug-in hybrids are a bit more practical than EVs and the fear of runn…

Cadillac is adding an additional 70,000 miles to the existing 130,000 miles already in the system by the 4th quarter 2019. Cadillac owners will receive an over-the-air update once the system upgrade is completed. After disappointing fans with a less than awe-inspiring release of the CT4-V and CT5-V on Thursday, Cadillac took the cars to Belle Isle, in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday. General Motors President Mark Reuss and GM Vice President Global Product Ken Morris drove prototypes of the next step up in V-Series Performance at the Detroit Grand Prix. The two sedans appear to be uprated, higher performance versions of the cars shown on Thursday, more in line to be direct replacements for the ATS-V and CTS-V they succeed. Much of the disappointment surrounding the two cars comes from the relatively tepid power outputs. The CT4-V comes with a 320 horsepower turbo-charged 4-cyl…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 14, 2013 While Cadillac is attacking the German automakers with the compact ATS and upcoming CTS, one place you will not see the crest and shield do battle is in the volume race. "We're not going to be in every single segment that they're in," said General Motors CFO Dan Ammann to Automotive News. "In some ways, I think that not having the pressure to sell the last incremental car at whatever cost … is actually not a bad place to be right now." During GM's earnings call today, GM announced that a new, highly flexible, EV architecture is on the way and that Cadillac will be at the center of the release. The architecture, called BEV3, is said to be highly flexible, being able to be configured from small sedans to large crossover formats, and front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive configurations. GM is targeting a sweet spot of 300 mile in range according to GM CEO Mary Barra. GM is going to continue its development of autonomous technology. It currently offers SuperCruise automated driving on the flagship CT6 sedan and plans to expand that technology across the Cadillac lineup. Late last year, GM an…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 20, 2012 Cadillac is hoping the third time is the charm with their entrance into the European market. The company told Autocar this week, they will build a RHD CTS-V for the United Kingdom as a start to a renewed commitment to taking markets outside U.S. more seriously. Currently the CTS-V is only offered in LHD, which means UK customers are locked out. “We’re geared up for right-hand drive now. We’re working on it.” GM Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick said to Autocar. Alongside the CTS-V’s conversion, Cadillac includes the ATS, its 3-Series warrior, as part of their commitment. Ewanick has faith in GM’s European…

Buick is GM's star in China, but Cadillac isn't far behind. Last year, Cadillac sales rose 17 percent to almost 80,000 vehicles. Consulting company LMC Automotive says the brand is poised to move ahead of Lexus in the country. Where can Cadillac attribute this rise in sales in China? Young buyers. The luxury brand says the average age for a buyer is 34 years old - slightly more than half of the average age of a Cadillac buyer in the U.S. "In China, young buyers already dominate the luxury market. Since Cadillac is a relative newcomer ... it was far easier to begin to cultivate the desired positioning for the brand from the get-go," said Cadillac President Johan de…

Automakers try their hardest to keep new models under wraps for the longest time to keep the prying eyes of competitors and the media. But Cadillac is trying something a bit different. According to Automotive News, Cadillac will be revealing new vehicles about six or seven months ahead from the start of production. Currently, Cadillac reveals new vehicles about two to three months ahead. Why are they doing this? This is part of a push by Cadillac to work on improving the quality of new vehicles. Cadillac's sedan lineup in the future is going to look much smaller. Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen told Reuters in an interview that the ATS, CTS, and XTS will not be directly replaced when their lifecycles end in 2019. A new model called the CT5 will take their place and cost between $35,000 and $45,000. "We have to rebalance our sedan portfolio," de Nysschen. The CT6 will take care of the top end, while a new small luxury sedan (possibly named CT4) will handle the low end. de Nysschen reiterated plans of Cadillac building out their crossover lineup with the XT4 launching in 2019. de Nysschen also mentioned that Cadillac could be launching a range o…

December 18, 2012 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is looking like GM is gearing up for a very busy auto show in Detroit this year. Today Cadillac released this teaser of their upcoming ELR luxury electric hybrid. Based on Voltec technology, the Cadillac ELR will begin production in late 2013 at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the Volt is currently built. Rumor has it that the ELR will forgo the 1.4 liter engine the Volt uses and instead run with a new Opel engine displacing around 1.8 liters. Further backing that up will likely be a larger battery. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 18, 2013 The new Cadillac CTS will be introduced next week at the New York Auto Show, but the brand decided to announce the engine lineup for it this week. The big news for the CTS is the introduction of the twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 good for 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet. That is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination runs to 60 MPH in 4.6 seconds, a top speed of 170 MPH, and returns an estimated MPG of 17 City/25 Highway. “The new Cadillac Twin-Turbo brings a new dimension of technologically advanced performance to the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan,” said David Leone, executive c…

Cadillac's boss Johan de Nysschen has a plan to rehabilitate Cadillac's image. Part of this plan deals with the dealers with tightening inventory and end the sell-at-any-cost mentality. But as Automotive News reports, there is a slight problem as Cadillac's dealer incentive programs promote the opposite. One incentive attaches $700 in dealer bonus money to every Cadillac vehicle they order from the factory, while another has cash payouts for growing sales. “The business model has been structured more for the bigger brands inside General Motors, rather than the small Cadillac brand,” said de Nysschen. “The luxury business is different.” de Nysschen instead …

Cadillac is getting ready to launch the new XT5 and it is only the beginning a new crossover offensive from the luxury brand. Speaking to Automotive News, Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen said a variation of the XT5's platform will be used for a new three-row crossover in the near future. Currently, the least expensive way to get into a 3-row Cadillac was to pony up $76 kilo-dollars for a base Cadillac Escalade. Even then, check too many boxes on the option sheet and the price could easily head well into the $80k range. When the Cadillac XT6 hits dealership later in couple months, that line in the sand will fall by over $20k. Cadillac will begin taking orders on the XT6 later this month with a base price starting at $53,690. That gets you a front-wheel drive Premium Luxury model. The XT6 Sport with standard all-wheel drive starts at $58,090 (including destination charge for both). All XT6 models are powered by a 3.6 liter V6 producing 310 hp an…

It seems Cadillac has some updates in store for the XTS if some leaked pictures from Chinese website Autohome are the real deal. The pictures show the XTS taking some ideas from the CT6 and XT5. Up front is a broader, more upright grille with new headlights. Around back is a more sculpted trunk lid and L-shaped taillights. Powertrains are expected to carry over, meaning the U.S. will stick with the 3.6L V6 and twin-turbo 3.6L. Over in China, the XTS will stick with the 2.0L turbo-four. We wouldn't be surprised if there is an update for the CUE system. Source: Autohome View full article

Imagine a world where there isn't hearses and limousines wearing the Cadillac badge. According to GM Inside News, that will be happening when production of the XTS ends in 2019. Johan de Nysschen, head of Cadillac revealed that when the lifecycle of the XTS ends, there will be no replacement. This is due to the brand realigning their product lineup to better compete with the German automakers. With the upcoming loss of the XTS, this will also signal the end of Cadillac's livery business. "We will not have a car that will lend itself to these kind of modifications and we will probably withdrawal from those markets," said de Nysschen. Source: GM Inside News Pic Credit: …

Cadillac will be positioning the CT6 as a technology showcase for the brand. Automotive News reports that GM is banking on suite of new technologies to entice customers into checking out the new flagship. “Cadillac is the place where we will experiment with technology our customers want in the future,” said GM Vice President of global product development, Mark Reuss. Such technologies include lightweight body structure combining steel and aluminum to give the car both stiffness and agility; a suite of super cruise automated driving technologies; a new rear-view mirror that streams video from the rear-view camera; and a new twin-turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder that is pro…

Only a few months after closing it down, Cadillac is bringing back their Book subscription program. Expected to launch in the second quarter, the revised program will be bringing in their dealers to play a key role. "Book 2.0 really works even more closely with our dealer network because we think there's a lot of opportunity as you go forward. We're going to base it off the dealer network," said Cadillac marketing chief Deborah Wahl. "We have to recognize that all of us — from the manufacturers to the dealer networks — we have to evolve our models to keep up with where consumers are." The first phase of the program launch will see a small number of pilot pr…

Cadillac's president isn't planning to cut prices to reverse the trend of slumping sales for the brand. "We cannot deny the fact that we are leaving behind our traditional customer base. It will take several years before a sufficiently large part of the audience who until now have been concentrating on the German brands will find us in their consideration set," said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen in a interview with Automotive News. "Either you have to bring your volume aspirations into alignment with reality and accept that you will sell fewer cars. Or you have to drop the price and continue to transact at the prices where you were historically. I think the logic…

The past year has seen autonomous vehicles making headlines with a number of technology companies such as Google and Apple working on their own vehicles. But Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen says autonomous vehicles shouldn't take away the act of driving to those who enjoy it. “Autonomous driving and driving passion must co-exist,” de Nysschen said to a group at the 10th annual J.D Power Automotive Marketing Roundtable in Las Vegas last week. “We’re after balance.” Standing in front of a picture of Google's autonomous prototype, de Nysschen said, “Many autonomous car (prototypes) emphasize sheer functionality. Cadillac's chief marketing officer, Uwe Ellinghaus isn't one to mince words. In a interview with Automobile Magazine, he labels the ELR as a disappointment. "Put it this way: The ELR's a big disappointment; there's no denying," said Ellinghaus. Ellinghaus explained the ELR "was the niche in the niche in the niche," and therefore appealed to a small audience. Not helping matters is the way Cadillac marketed the ELR a luxurious two-seater coupe has proved unsuccessful partly due to the coupe market shrinking. Many customers compared it to the Tesla Model S which offered more practicality. While there might not be a second-generation ELR, Ellinghaus says Cadillac…

Imagine you are a dealer sitting in a meeting and the head of the brand that you sell tells everyone that sales will get worse before they get better. Well that was what Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac's president told dealers last summer. Now dealers are getting a first look at 'worse' looks like. Automotive News that a number of dealers have lost on incentive cash in the first quarter because they missed sales targets set by GM. Discounts and lease offers have also dried up as well. Previously, Cadillac offered deals on the ATS and CTS to help remove the massive stock sitting on dealer lots. This is reflected in Cadillac's sales. ATS dropped 23 percent, while the CTS saw …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 20, 2013 The Cadillac Elmiraj concept made quite the splash last week at Pebble Beach with a number of people talking about it. It could be that the Elmiraj could make the transfer from show car to production car. Automotive News had the chance to speak with Cadillac's senior vice president of global operations, Bob Ferguson. Ferguson said that the Elmiraj “is very doable." "Sometimes you go through these exercises to make a design statement. This car is marketable. It's practical enough to be put through the production process," said Ferguson. "Our dealers really want a vehicle like this." If given the green li…

Cadillac's Senior Vice President, Bob Ferguson said in a interview with Automotive News last week that the company is considering expanding the ATS lineup. "You've made the investment. You've built a brand within a brand. If you have a winner, you should exploit that and offer variations," said Ferguson. Models under the spotlight include a convertible and wagon. This would give the brand a better chance of competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The mention of a wagon and convertible signals a change of product plans at Cadillac. Previous reports had the ATS Convertible on hold and that the brand would likely not do a wagon due to the poor sales of the CTS S…

For starters, Ferguson revealed that the next Cadillac CTS would be unveiled at March's New York Auto Show, confirming what we've been hearing for the past month or so. Furguson also said the CTS would be going on sale sometime in the fall. "It's just gorgeous. For almost a decade, Cadillac has been using a three-letter naming system which is (insert letter here) followed by T and S. Small sedans such as the ATS start towards the beginning of the alphabet while larger sedans such as the XTS go towards the end. However, not all of Cadillac's vehicles follow this. For example, the SRX crossover and Escalade. Many complain that Cadillac's nomenclature is confusing and will only get worse when more models are added. Cadillac's marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus is one of them. "There's no doubt with an expanding product portfolio we need to revise our entire nomenclature," Ellinghaus told reporters at Geneva. How Cadillac plans to ch…

You don't hear a lot of executives admit when they or their company has made a blunder. When they do, it comes as a bit of a shock and helps you realize they are somewhat human. Case in point is Cadillac's marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus telling Bloomberg they bit off bit a more than they could chew with the ELR pricing. "The MSRP was, indeed, a mouthful. We overestimated that customers would realize our competitors were naked at that price," said Ellinghaus. So why did Cadillac price the ELR so high? Well product planners believed if the ELR was close to the price of the Chevrolet Volt, people would go for the Volt. Also, the high price was seen as to signal this …

Cadillac has been a hot topic of late, due to a number of key items such as the appointment of Johan de Nysschen, the nomenclature change, and the move to New York. Speaking with Reuters, Johan de Nysschen spoke about what the future holds for the luxury brand. A key part of de Nysschen's plan for Cadillac is to expand the lineup with the introduction of five to ten models by 2020. One of those models is a range-topping luxury sedan that will go on sale at the end of the decade and likely will be called CT8 or CT9. This model will compete with the likes of long-wheelbase models and has been signed off by him. de Nysschen also talked and hinted at some of the other mode…

Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen is known for slipping out little bits of information. Case in point was earlier today when an analyst in a Facebook group said Cadillac would axing the V8 from most of their models aside from Cadillac CTS-V and Escalade. Johan joined the discussion and went on to correct this by stating that there will be a new V8 engine that will be purpose built for Cadillac. In Johan's words, "There absolutely will be another state -of - the -art mega powerful highly efficient new 8- cylinder from Cadillac, besides the CTS- V engine. Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen is trying to sell Cadillac's lowest-volume dealers (selling 50 or less models in a year) on transitioning to a virtual showroom. Automotive News says de Nysschen outlined this concept to dealers last week during national brand meetings in Southern California. The concept involves a dealer going to a concierge-style approach where salespeople would visit prospective buyers either at home or work, equipped with a touchscreen device with vehicle configuration or virtual-reality units. Dealers who go with this concept will also not stock Cadillac vehicles. Instead, orders would be coming from regional inventory center. de Nysschen …

The long-delayed Cadillac Super Cruise system will be arriving as an option for the 2018 CT6 this fall. Described as "the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway,"(Tesla would argue otherwise) Super Cruise combines the driver assistance features currently on the CT6, along with a driver attention system and LiDAR-based mapping data. Unlike other systems that monitor forces on the steering wheel to see if the driver is paying attention, Super Cruise uses a camera mounted on the steering column to monitor a driver's head position and movement. If it detects the driver has turned their head away from the road, the system will issue an alert to…

Cadillac released the pricing for the upcoming CT4 sedan for 2020. Ringing up at $33,990 for the base 2.0T RWD model with an 8-speed automatic, the CT4 undercuts the price of the outgoing ATS by a few grand. This makes the CT4 roughly $7,000 cheaper than the same size 3-series or C-Class sedan or just $1k more expensive than a smaller A-Class Sedan. Adding AWD will add about $2,500 to the price. Buyers who want a bit more can opt for the Premium Luxury package with the 2.7-liter Turbo-4 making 309 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft of torque and a 10-speed automatic, brings the price to $38,490, adding AWD to that costs $3,200. Cadillac's newest V-series, the CT4-V and CT5-V, disappointed fans when they debuted on May 30th by being substantially less powerful than their predecessors. The CT4-V gets a 2.7-liter turbo four cylinder producing 320 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, that's a 130 horsepower deficit compared to the ATS-V. The story for the CT5-V is similar with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo making 355 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque compared to the 640 horsepower of the CTS-V. GM President Mark Reuss called the previous cars "hammer" and that they intimidated customers. Thus, Cadillac responded by extending the V-series badge down to be more accessible to more customers. The wreath-less Cadillac badge that debut on the ATS Coupe will soon be appearing on the 2015 ATS Sedan. That's not the only change in store for the ATS sedan for the 2015 model year though. Along with the badge, the 2015 ATS sedan gets some revised sheetmetal in the front to better match the ATS Coupe. On the tech front, the 2015 ATS sedan will get 4G LTE connectivity, text message alert, and a Powermat wireless phone charging dock. Power-wise, the turbo 2.0L four sees an increase of 14 percent for torque. Numbers now stand at 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5 four and 3.6L V6 carry over into 2015. Cadillac hasn't revealed pricing at this time, but…

The Cadillac XT5 will be the first model in a new crossover lineup for the brand. Next up is a compact crossover to take on the likes of the BMW X3 and Lexus NX according to Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. But don't expect it anytime soon. de Nysschen said it would coming out in 2018. Following the compact crossover will be a large crossover that would take on the likes of the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. This model is expected in either the second half of 2018 or 2019. Wrapping up the crossover lineup could be a subcompact model that would compete with the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. No word on when we could see that model. Source: Automotive News (Subsc…

Back in December, we reported on the anomaly that is the Cadillac Escalade. The model represents a number of things the brand would like to leave behind - too much bling and sharing a platform with Chevrolet and GMC to name a couple. But it is also the model where Cadillac makes the most money and brings in buyers from German and Japanese luxury brands. "How do you balance the desire to bring it into alignment with where we're taking the brand and the equally intense desire not to screw up a good thing?" said Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen back in April. The answer appears to be not messing with the formula and just building on top of it. “The Escalade m…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 12, 2012 When the first-generation Cadillac CTS debuted in 2002, it premiered the Art & Science design language with crisp lines and sharp edges. Ask GM design chief Ed Welburn what he thinks of it and this is what he would say, "It had a dramatic presence, very angular. But when you really look at it, the surfacing of the body was not very sophisticated at all," Welburn said to Automotive News. The second-generation CTS would add some sculpture that would smooth out the angular look while remaining as interesting as the first-gen model. So what's in store for the next-generation CTS? Welburn says the car…

The replacement for the Cadillac SRX is expected to be shown this fall, possibly at the LA Auto Show. The Detroit News reports that the next SRX will likely be wearing the XT name, along with a number to designate where it stands in the lineup. Many analysts believe that the SRX replacement will be named the XT5. The SRX has proven to be a big seller for the brand since it moved to the front-wheel drive Theta platform. Last year, Cadillac moved 53,578 SRX models. But the model is getting long in the tooth. Sales so far this year have dropped 17.5 percent to 12,294 vehicles. "Cadillac's current SRX is one of the oldest products in the segment. The XT5 is part of Cadillac…

As many of us suspected for a while, Cadillac has decided to not go forth with a second-generation ELR plug-in hybrid. "I plan to continue admiring it as one of the most beautiful cars on four wheels. But we don't plan further investment" in the coupe, Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen told reporters at a media event for the CT6. de Nysschen went on to say the ELR will still be sold as long as people want to buy it. Previously, Automotive News reported the ELR would stick around till 2018. The ELR was a victim of bad decisions. A key one pointed out by dealers was the starting price of $75,995 caused demand to drop sharply. For the 2016 model year, Cadillac s…

Last week, we brought you a story talking about what Global Cadillac's Vice President, Robert E. Ferguson would like to see happen with the ATS lineup. This week, we bring you a couple more items from the VP's wishlist. Edmunds had the chance to talk with Ferguson at the Detroit Auto Show and he said that he would like to have a diesel engine for most of the lineup in this decade. "I think that would speed our growth in Europe, and it would help us with environmental issues here and in Asia," said Ferguson. A good candidate for a diesel engine would be the new Escalade Ferguson went onto say. "I would love to see it in that time frame, but I can't commit to it. I thin…

The U.S. Patent and and Trademark Office (USPTO) sometimes provides some clues as to what automakers have possibly in the works. Case in point are a set of drawings depicting a new coupe for Cadillac. General Motors filed the patent for a “vehicle body exterior” on February 14th, 2017. The patent was approved by the USPTO earlier this week. The drawings reveal a fair amount of influence from the Escala. Up front resides a trapezoidal grille and a set of slim headlights. Along the side profile, the design shares the Escala's low-slung roof and creases. The back features a trunk lid with chiseling near the taillights. What could this patent be hinting at? …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 29, 2013 Currently in the Cadillac lineup, there is only one crossover, the SRX. But a new report from Reuters says that lineup will grow to three by 2017. Three automotive supplier sources who know of Cadillac's plans say that a replacement for the midsize SRX will be the first model to arrive around in 2016. A year after, a small and large crossover will bookend the midsize model. Why three crossovers? Cadillac is in the middle of fleshing out its product lineup to better compete with the likes of the German automakers in the U.S. and in China. With the likes of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz adding crossovers of…

The 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is taking the German opposition with 640 horsepower coming from a supercharged 6.2L V8. But Automobile magazine is reporting that a more powerful version is coming. “The Cold War continues. I don’t know where it stops, but it’s not at 640 hp, that’s for sure,” said a source. Now the current CTS-V outguns the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 by about 80 horsepower. But Cadillac believes the V8 is capable of producing more power. We'll be keeping an close eye on this story. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 10, 2012 Its been a few months since we last heard anything about the rumored Omega RWD platform that could be underpinning future Cadillac flagships. Our last report in September said a sedan and hard top are in the works and will be appearing sometime in 2015. A new report from Car and Driver says GM has a few Omega vehicles on the way, with the first one arriving sometime in 2015. Omega will take hold of the larger RWD vehicles ranging from a midsize luxury sedan (CTS, 5-Series, E-Class) up to length of 207 inches (about the same length of an Audi A8L). The first vehicle in question is the replacement for the…

It seems with every passing moment, the rumorpile churns more information out on the upcoming Cadillac ATS-V. Case in point is a report from Motor Trend this week which says the ATS-V will utilize the 3.6L Twin-Turbo V6 engine with 425 horsepower under the hood. Even better is that the ATS-V will also come with a a seven-speed manual gearbox option. Now this is very different from our last report in November when it was said that the ATS-V would be packing a turbocharged 3.2L V6, capable of 500 plus horsepower. There is more to Motor Trend's ATS rumor as well. There is plans for a more extreme version of the ATS-V possibly named ATS-V+. The V+ is expected to get a much …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 24, 2013 It was almost two years ago when Cadillac put German automakers on notice when they introduced the ATS sedan at the Detroit Auto Show. The automaker is looking to do a repeat performance of that by introducing the ATS Coupe at next year's Detroit Auto Show according to a new report from Edmunds. Few details are available about the new coupe, but judging from spy shots, we can assume that the ATS coupe will be somewhat similar in design to the CTS coupe. The ATS sedan's powertrain and transmission lineup will likely carry over to the coupe, as will the option of all-wheel drive. Source: Edmunds William…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 13, 2013 We know that Cadillac is hard at work on an ATS-V, but no one has been able to nail down what will be under the hood of it. Reports say it could either be a twin-turbo V6, possibly the new TT 3.6 found in the CTS and XTS VSport, or a V8 engine. According to a new report from Automobile, the ATS-V will likely have a twin-turbo V6, but not the 3.6. The report says the twin-turbo V6 will be a 3.2L and will be capable of producing of more than 500 horsepower. This TT 3.2 V6 has a bit of interesting story to it. The engine is based on GMs’ High Feature V6 engine architecture which was supplied to Alfa Romeo …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 24, 2013 In the 111 year history of the Cadillac brand, the emblem has changed and morphed close to 40 times. According to Automotive News, another change is incoming. Sources tell AN that the new emblem will debut on a concept that will be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California next month. The new emblem would then appear on production vehicles starting in 2015, although one of the sources say that could change. Why is Cadillac changing their emblem? To help shed the image of producing old luxury yachts and help bring in younger buyers to their showroom. "Every time it was tested, the reactio…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 30, 2013 For many years, the rumor of a seven-seat crossover from Cadillac have been floating around. Now it seems the rumor could be coming true. Car and Driver is reporting that three-row Cadillac crossover that will sit between the SRX and Escalade has been given the green light. This information comes from two GM employees. The new crossover will use an updated version of GM's Lambda platform named Lambda II. Lambda II is currently underpinning the current Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia. Expect the Cadillac version to come with some improvement such as less weight and more rigidity with th…

Back at the New York Auto Show, Cadillac unveiled an all-new twin-turbo 4.2L V8 that produces 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. This engine was destined for upcoming CT6 V-Sport. But with the CT6 lineup destined to go away in the near future, what will happen to the new V8. Roadshow has learned from a source that Cadillac will be using this engine in the next-generation Escalade and CTS-V (don't you mean CT5-V?!). Let's begin with the next-generation Escalade. The current model uses a 6.2L V8 engine that makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. We know that Cadillac was planning to offer a slightly detuned version of the 4.2L V8 on the regul…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 29, 2013 Last night, Automotive News broke some big news concerning Cadillac. Sources say that executives have put on ice a new super luxury sedan that would have competed with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The reason is due to the investment not being justifiable. A brief refresher: Back in 2011, we began hearing rumors of a new RWD platform with the codename of Omega. Omega was to spawn two new Cadillac flagships; one that would take on the likes of the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class; and a super luxury sedan. Now, development of Omega and the S-Class competitor is still on and is expected to come…
