-- This thread will not tolerate flaming of any kind, it is intended to be a "civilized argument" encouraging critical thinking that lends itself to further evolving and refining our world. It focuses mainly on American Culture (the fastest growing culture in history) however foreign cultural views are more than welcome, as everything lends insight. To kick it off... Modern American Culture has evolved so rapidly that America is losing its cohesiveness, and is slowly destroying the traditional place of the family. What is your opinion on this relatively new trend (post WW2)? Is this good or bad? what are its consequences? what does it provide to our soc…

I collaborated with a friend on two songs recently while I try to figure out what I'm going to do about my home studio dilemma. We tracked down a bunch of loops, chopped them up, threw them back together, added a touch of WTF, and came up with what you hear here: http://0023916.bandcamp.com/ Not totally original, I don't think. Well, about as original as an art collage, which is to say there is originality in how things are used. We made due with what we had. It isn't completely boring, though, like some of the stuff you hear coming from people who a.) can't properly arrange music and b.) don't understand anything at all about theory and c.) can only use pre-made samples…

I have always loved the 2-door Tahoes and Yukons but searching for them online is a hassle. They always slip between the cracks in any search and I end up entering every configuration of 2-door Tahoe(Yukon) as in 2dr Tahoe, 2-door Tahoe, Tahoe 2-door, etc. or sifting through thousands of 4-doors just to find a handful of 2-door listings. What a PITA! So, if you run across any let me know.

I've got 1 gay friend. Who here sees a problem with this? I'm running into problems... to those who have gay friends--is it always about "being gay" or is it just about things that happen in a friendship? I've noticed that I'm the gay guy. Girls want to hang out with me because I will compliment their hair, hold their packages, talk to them aboug guys, give them a good laugh. They also want to go to gay bars to have fun. I'm starting to almost feel like a freaking novelty item. I have one gay friend--and I've only know him for like a year... and that's because we began as dating. He's the first gay guy I've managed to meet nearby that acts like a human being--t…

Last Wednesday my gf and I went to an auto auction. We sat in an drove many vehicles. Some were good some were not so good and some were pretty horrible. There were a couple GM cars I saw and looked at. a previous gen Grand Prix, and a 90's Seville. I didn't get to test drive either, but I did sit in them. The Caddy was nice, with plenty of soft materials and so on. I've always been a fan of the styling, but it's not a car I could afford, so I passed on it. The Grand Prix was probably in my price range...but I just could get get by the interior. Now, I can put up with a lot...but the plastics and the switchgear were just awful. Ugly, cheap, and squeaky are some good ad…

So, I pull into the driveway and stop to collect the trash cans. I use the dash switch to open the rear hatch in my new Tahoe and load in the cans. Truck is running while I do this. I close up the back and go to the driver's door. The Tahoe has locked itself with my only key in the ignition. I try multiple "tools" to get at the lock switch on the door while I try to balance on the running board. I slip. I smack the side-view mirror with my hand, breaking it. After about an hour and a half of trying, I manage to operate the lock switch. One direction - no result The other direction - no result So I go for the window switch and finally get into the truck. I have s…

Corvette Racing's Future Depends on Aston Martin Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | By GARY WATKINS Corvette Racing will confirm its continued participation in the American Le Mans Series--as soon as the Aston Martin Racing team does the same. GM road racing manager Steve Wesoloski even suggested that questions about Chevrolet's 2008 plans should be directed at Prodrive (which runs the Aston team) boss David Richards. "As soon as they announce they are coming back, we'll announce that we'll be back," he said. "I think you should ask that question to David Richards and George Howard-Chappell [who also runs Aston racing]." Wesloski and Corvette program manager Doug…

I saw a green and white Prius taxi today in traffic..I googled and found this article: From the Denver Business Journal: ---Metro Taxi doubled its fleet of hybrid vehicles on Denver streets Monday, bringing the total to 10. The addition of the five new Toyota Hybrid Prius is in keeping with a pledge Metro Taxi made in late May to replace all 500 vehicles in its fleet with hybrids. Metro Taxi said replacing one of its taxis with a Prius is equal to converting five non-commercial vehicles to hybrids. The company estimates converting its entire fleet will save 3 million gallons of gas a year.

I'm currently taking STATS and CALC and I'm not doing very well at all. I have a lot riding on my satisfactory completion of these course and I was wondering if anyone had any magical study techniques or philosophies up their sleeves. I swear man, I can sit through a 2 hour Psych lecture and recite it word for word, yet I can't remember Calculus well enough to do the homework 30 minutes later. Me trying to learn this stuff is like trying to force water into a steel block, it just frustrates the hell out of me and makes me feel dumb. Maybe I could coin a new phrase: Mathematically Retarded: The inability to comprehend or accomplish anything mathematically that doesn't …

Well guys, I've thought about it. And quite frankly I'm tired of changing the oil in the driveway and doing brake jobs and such on the back parking pad. I'm building a shop! I'm thinking 40ftx40ft devided down the middle to give me two 20ftx40ft bays. In one bay, I'm going to put a 12,000-lb two post lift, in bay two flat floor. Air and electrical outlets in both bays, full plumbing and heating and air. I'm going to put work benches along the exterior and joining walls in both bays. In bay 2, I'm going to also put welding equipment (probably a MiG/TiG and a stick welder) along with my oxy-acetelene torches and bottles. Both bays will have overhead heavy winches to…

July 22, 2008 Modern Classics: Pontiac Fiero, 1984-1988 http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jb2...ntiac-fiero.htm Pontiac Fieros. By Jeff Burry Pontiac Fiero, 1984-1988 Mid-engine sports cars are not generally associated with General Motors. People are more likely to associate them with exotic carmakers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. However, the Pontiac division of General Motors produced such a car in the mid-1980s. The car was badged Pontiac Fiero, Italian for "proud." Conceived by John Delorean, and designed by Hulki Aldikacti, the car's chief design engineer, the Fiero was a two-seater, mid-engine sports car built for the masses. It was Ald…

Warning-this is a rant, but it is how I really feel. This comes in part from Miata net and hanging out with a few of the VW/Audi guys...and talking with people at work or in various social circles. The feeling seems to be widespread that most of what is being built right now is just plain..well..butt awful ugly. I need to know if you all think 2009 is the worst year ever for car design. I just look at what some car makers are building, and I just want to weep. Not to sound like a Cheers and Gears nutjob, but a rusty 73 Maverick on jackstands looks better visually IMHO than the following: Anything from Nissan other than the 350Z or the GTR. The Z and GTR aren't …

Well we finally got our yearly ice storm. So far its only about a quarter of an inch, but still, bad things happen. I was going to get something out of the back of my car and slipped on the ice, hit my back, kinda hurt but not too bad. The drive home was interesting, the LeSabre did better than most other cars on the road, mostly because I'm a better driver than most others. A guy in an F-350 flew by me on the highway (I was going about 30, he had to have been doing 60) then noticed traffic was at a standstill in front of him and slid off the road. There was a FWD Regal in front of me that also noticed too late that traffic up ahead was stopped, so he slammed on his …

Okay....I've read a rumor, and maybe you guys have heard it.....that Car & Driver might be leaving Ann Arbor to combine many operations with it's sister mag, Road & Track, in Newport Beach, CA.? At first, I thought "no" because....didn't they just move into new editorial offices in Ann Arbor? Then I read that one of the reasons Csaba Csere (who I've always liked) left C&D at the end of last year was because he didn't like the direction the magazine was taking....and admist rumors that they were leaving Michigan to move to CA to combine many operations with R&T (which would make some economic sense considering they are both owned by the same publisher..…

OK, so I seem to remember a Pontiac ad from magazines or maybe a full line brochure. I would love to have it as my desktop, but I cant find it on the web. Does anyone have it scanned by chance? If noone does I may have to dig out some old brochures to see if I can find it. OK, the ad was (I am pretty sure) a GTO, Bonneville and Grand Prix all in one pic, and I think they were made to look like they were sitting at the end of skid marks that would look like they spun them into place for the picture. It would have to be 2004 or 2005, methinks. Bueller? Bueller?

Yeah. Right. Once they check out the car (a 3-series BMW BTW)and find there was nothing wrong, he's got some 'splaining to do.

N.E.D. opened up today, and surprisingly the weather was beautiful...until about 3:00, LOL I got 7 runs in, as did Silvester (Pretty sure he got 7...) Track conditions sucked, everyone was sliding all over the place (myself included), but I managed a 14.097 @ 100.67 with a .654 r/t and a 2.174 60 foot time..... thats out of a 96 Cobra with 103,000 miles, a steeda shifter and Bassani x pipe with flowmasters...... not too bad, i dont think Silvester was....well....a few seconds slower, but we both had a great time up there. As many of you may know, I've been on antidepressants since March, Lexapro to be exact. They did their job, getting my out of my depression, for good news. Otherwise, the side effects were unbelievable. Weight gain from appetite increase... Problems with excessive yawning... Inability to orgasm during any form of sex... and Sleepiness and Insomnia both. Because of these, I've had a desire to stop taking them. Considering that I was in a "rut of life sucking" when I was depressed and was put on these, I figured it's about time to get off them. Life for me has changed so much since March and most of the reasons why I was depressed in the first place have disappeared. I re…

I keep on admiring a 91 Sunbird LE sedan at a used car dealer in my town. It was a trade-in one owner car and it has only 128kms on it. It has been sitting there for about 6 months so the price has been lowered. They send I could have it for $200. I did the free history report on it and it turned up 0 records. It was owned by a little old lady lol. The paint is rough but the rust isn't bad. THe powertrain is in excellent condition. The car has a turn off though. The floor boards are getting soft and rotting. Can this be prevented before they open or can new floorboards be put in? The kms are legitimate as the car has a 6 digit odometer unlike the Aries. Nothing mechanical…

Yech! For those on the semester system, final exams are right around the corner. Mine start on Wednesday night and I have two others, all at night time, within a week from that because I am in an evening program. I have been burning the candle at both ends, ending up at coffee shops with my books from 11 pm to 1:30 am or so since I find myself cat-napping at weird intervals. The upside: I will be DONE with finals, and with my degree program, in less than 10 days. I think I can manage. What about you? Big finals load? Are you coping / what do you do to cope?

In the comments section below an article about DaimlerChrysler paying a $40 million CAFE fine, there was this comment that was pretty interesting. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/31/nhtsa-r...ler-takes-cake/ Wasn't there a modified CAFE passed that allowed trucks more leniency than cars (down to 25 mpg)? If so, and Chevy really is at about 27 mpg for its car fleet, that's a lot better than I was thinking. Trucks have a way to go, however. It's also interesting to note how big of a difference the Prius makes on Toyota's lineup; I think CAFE can be done, but no doubt GM needs more hybrid / electric vehicles on the road. I don't see why size needs to be sacrific…

Well not really "curse" so much as driver stupidity. I was on delivery in the $h!tier area of Lawrence, at an intersection with no light and poor visiblity. There was also some jackass parked at the corner. As I came to s astop this beat up 80's Town Car comes to a stop behind me, kind of short. I pull out a few inches to see around the car at the corner. He pulls up too but hits his braakes kind of hard, as I can see the boat nose dive a bit. I pull out a coupel of inches more and stop to geta better view and wait for an openning in busy traffic...then BAM! I'm rear ended...and more than a little pissed. Let's lok at the facts: 2nd accident in less…

I threw together this collage to show a long-running & widespread practice for a number of decades. You have your Chevys, Fords, Dodges, Internationals, Studebakers & Jeeps commonly doing the same thing on multiple truck lines : painting grilles (and sometimes also bumpers & headlight bezels) white versus the higher trim's chrome pieces. Looking back, it's interesting to me that it was pretty much universal. White is usually the cheapest paint, but in my opinion; it looks a lot better than unpainted black plastic. Wonder how a 'stripper' trim modern truck would look done up in a similar manner?

So after wanting a good digital camera for the last three years, I (we) finally got one for Christmas. Jessica and I got it as a gift from my brother and my mother. It's a Canon SX10 IS. Funny thing is it's the same one BV recently got, and even funnier is that it he bought his from the same place this came from: newegg. I love taking pictures, so this is quite awesome. For now I'm just playing with the settings and taking test photos, but what a difference compared to the Kodak. So naturally I've taken one or two.

* I have thought about visiting-posting many times the last couple months, but despite having actually drafted a post or 2 [including choice responses in the Random Thoughts Thread], did not. So, why now? To invite you to a gathering I am hosting THIS weekend! Short notice, but sometimes impromptu-spontaneous gatherings are needed. 2 experiences prompted this last-minute decision. First, just over a month go, I found out the restaurant that hosted my MidSummer Chitown Gatherings ~20 years ago is under new ownership interested in hosting events in 2026 [details on those later]. Second, among developing health issues (including a hernia), I had a scare a week or…

TheCaptain's thread got me thinking. Ever watched a movie, TV show, played a game or something along those lines and heard a phrase that you find yourself using or wanting to use?

Today, I saw a bunch of last(2)gen Monte Carlos on a major boulevard in my area. They ranged anywhere from early 2000s up to the 2006/2007. Some of them, unfortunately, were kind of "blingy(sp)." I look at this car and study it. It has some good angles and some bad ones. The overall side profile is good. The frontal 3/4 view is good, too. The rear hump is not at all good and the too-low and too-heavy fender sculpting is not good, either. This is a car that could have been much better. I think that it was "sort of" intended to be a Cutlass Supreme price-point personal coupe, though it was not marketed that way. I think the GP 2-door that ran through 2002 was way …

Don't you just love it when you had plans to do something (like a trip or something) and someone bails out and cancels at the VERY last minute? So either you do what you had planned alone or not even bother. Granted sometimes they've canceled because something tragic or important happen that I can understand, but when they cancel because "they don't feel like it" just... I don't know why, but crap like this happens to me all the time and it's not with just one friend in particular it's with quite a few of them. I'm not someone who gets pissed off often but this is one of the little things that grate on my nerves.

I do an awful lot of thinkin' about cars throughout the course of my day.... I'm always boring Marcia with my "if I ever have the money..." and "wouldn't it be cool if..." type comments about cars. Anyway I just think there are many important questions out there that I need to answer during the course of my life. Here's a short list off the top of my head, thirteen to be exact since it's a lucky number. You are about to enter the empty space known only as: "Sixty8Panther's Brain" 1. How much money will it take to realize my dream of having a 30s Hot Rod powered by a radial aircraft engine? …

Car's running fine. Wonderfully. Cam's been installed for 200 miles now... So my dad takes my car out for a test drive and notices a whining/long-clicking sound. Weird. Coming from driver's side (he says top, I say bottom). Engine's running and we're checking it out. He pulls the throttle cable a little and engine dies and won't start again. It cranks a little, but not enough to get her going. Alternator and battery were just checked and perfectly fine.. WTF?!

Clicky I know this evokes a reaction from most of you, but if this were a year old and black, this would be just like my father's bought-new 1987 Trofeo, the very first car I remember (and the first car I 'drove' - on my dad's lap, of course!). Same digital 'gages', same throttle shifter. Ours had a moonroof and an NEC mobile cellular car phone, though. I've seen only a few Toronados of these hated downsized years, and most of them beaten hard with random wheels, busted antennas, and broken headlamp doors. But this? Almost perfect. *Sigh*

That's been in our garage for a few months now and I keep forgetting to post about it. No idea what type of tractor it is. My dad and my uncles are working on it. It took me by surprise when I realised it was in there. Opened the garage door to pull my Millenia in and there's this tractor in my way.

I'd love to see my C&G friends at the track! I've been driving in the Philly region SCCA autocross season this summer...and the last race was postponed (because of that little lady we called Sandy) until November 11. And I know a bunch of you are in this region! Come out...bring your rides...sign up for the race. Show us what you've got! We'll be in the parking lot at the Dover Speedway. In the meantime, I've posted some stories about what I've learned on the track. Check out part 2 at: http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/4289 And tell us your racing stories...legal ones, please.
