Alright guys, I know at the old site we had a long section of someone's ride taken up with just automotive photography questions. I've created this topic to keep from getting to that. My guidelines (please disagree; add some) 1. Use the rule of thirds. divide the viewfinder mentally into 9 equal sections, at the intersection of the lines dividing it, thats where the focus should go 2. Make sure the car is going into the picture. if you are taking a pic of a car, make sure the car isnt on its way out of the picture, make it look like its coming into the picture and towards you 3. Try to use dramatic lighting, taking pictures at …

As fellow chatters on one of my favorite website (this one, if you didn't know), I wanted to give you guys a first glimpse of a revived online magazine: AutomotiveTraveler. Some of you have seen the individual articles, but please take a look at the first full publication in years. Make some comments...share with your friends if you like it...but just take a look. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/2124

Automotive News December 24, 2007 - 12:01 am ET "Bigger is better" is dead. True, that marketing philosophy has proved lucrative for the better part of a century. Americans like big cars and trucks and big powertrains to haul them. But now that Congress has passed a 35-mpg corporate average fuel economy standard, that philosophy is obsolete. Automakers must prepare consumers for some big changes. The industry must show the public what the future will look like. Vehicles will shrink, and engines won't be quite so large. But with the right mix of styling, technology and performance, marketers still can create excitement. Yes, it will force some new thinking amo…

Took some time to attend the Calgary Auto Show tonight and I got a chance to see a couple vehicles that haven't really been seen up until this point. You might be interested to hear about the Orlando for example... Here's a summary of my thoughts. Golf Estate Absolutely love this car, would be perfect for me. Nice compact wagon, especially a Diesel with real solid MPG. It's disappointing more automakers don't make wagons these days. Are you listening GM? Regal Wagon, Coupe, and Convertible would be nice. 9-5 This is a REALLY elegant car, and the presence is even better in person. LOVE the digital cockpit inspired digital speedometer 300 Feels big, great qualit…

While out driving this afternoon, I was doing a bit of radio channel surfing and caught the end of 'Prairie Home Companion'...apparently, the show has Toyota as a sponsor, 'cause Garrison Keillor was saying something to the effect that Toyota has increased the production of the Prius, making it easier than ever to get yourself one. Hmmm.... the bastion of upper Midwestern square has sold out! (I'd picture GK being more of a staid Oldsmobile or Volvo man than a Pious driver)..

In the last month I have seen two '07 Aveo sedans on the side of a highway with smoke billowing out from under the hood. The first was here around Springgyfield, it was on the side of the road yet traffic was still backed up, and you could see flames poking out. The second was yesterday up near Jefferson City, where people apparently know how to drive, since it was on the shoulder and traffic was moving over, but not slowing to a creep. No flames, just thick smoke. It seems the new Aveo is indeed red hot.

I think we need a different measure of how much a vehicle has been used rather than just mileage. I'm sure we've all seen those ads for used cars saying "All highway miles!", but I think in addition to that, we have to start to take powertrain setup into consideration. When I bought my Avalanche, it only had 12,800 miles on it which is insanely low for a 7 year old truck. But for all I knew, those could have been all city miles where the truck was idling and going through short bursts of acceleration. But I actually know it was mostly highway miles because these trucks also have an engine hour monitor on them. I don't remember what it was when I bought it, but I t…

What, with those orange countertops, mix-matched counter, goldish-yellow-wood cabinet finish, green and pink flowered walls with lower wood panelling, stained steel sink, uneven and unlevel wooden floor with a green rug over it... and to top it off... white "goes with everything" appliances. My boss has had 2 Escape 4WDs as his demos this winter, first a black Hybrid, and now an XLT V6. The few times I've gotten to drive them, I've been impressed with the solid, quiet ride on dry pavement. I asked him how the 4WD did for him in the snow, and he said he was unimpressed, said neither one felt like it was really pulling much with the rear wheels, even in deep snow where it surely would have been necessary. He said it was not like a pickup truck, where you shift it into 4WD and you can feel it work. Kind of disappointed me to hear him say that. I wonder if GM's AWD Equinox/Terrain system is similar to the Escape's in operation and in low-traction conditions …

While looking around GMs FastLane web site, I came across this awesome story covering GMs military concepts that have been created to meet the needs of our armed forces. Some of them I could see being wanted by the public such at GMs Silverado Duramax Diesel Hybrid system where the Diesel motor can also serve as a 30kW generator. This could so be useful during storms when the power goes out to your home. Check out the cool pictures and info here.

Been meaning to ask this question for a while- wondering if anybody could provide me with some insight. With the real estate market in the crapper and some pretty cherry foreclosure deals to be had, my folks have finally started seriously thinking about buying a place in greater Phoenix. This would be basically a vacation home sort of aim (Condo + Garage most likely) of course there are other things to deal with in setting something like that up. My dad wanted me to see if I could find out what vehicle registration laws are like in Arizona which would be determinant on whether we bring a vehicle down or buy one there to put in the garage. Obvious preference would be…

Wrong on immigration Lexington MUCH as I admire his prose style, George Will is horribly wrong this morning. Of Arizona's atrocious new law that allows the state police to arrest anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant, he says: Arizona's law might give the nation information about whether judicious enforcement discourages illegality. If so, it is a worthwhile experiment in federalism. On the contrary, empowering the police to stop and demand papers from anyone who looks vaguely Mexican will make life unpleasant for Hispanics while wasting time that officers could more usefully spend pursuing real criminals. More generally, I find the "let's secure the…

Extremely said day for anyone who has an appreciation of these old warbirds. Apparently there was a fire on engine #2 shortly after takeoff. The pilot found a field and made a successful emergency landing. Everyone on board escaped. At the time teh fire was small and it was thought the plane could be saved. However the firefighters sat and watched it burn, claiming that the ground was too soft for the trucks to drive on. This last part really aggravates me. Last time I checked, an 18 ton plane weighs more than a firetruck. yet they made a successful landing on said field. And to add insult to injury, footage shows the lazy bastards with their trucks on the field half-ass…

I took the LaCrosse in for an oil change at the dealership on Saturday...based on time, not miles. I always seem to wind up talking to service advisors. For one thing, I seem to "file away" their comments and opinions on cars, maintenance, reputations, etc. This weekend, at the Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealership, I saw a used 2007 MC within viewing distance as he was writing up my LOF work ticket and I told him the decision process I went through in deciding on th Buick over the Chevy. He told me that it was a good choice, but that their experience with VVT has been virtually problem-free, but that the 3800s almost NEVER come back for anything. I then went into the showr…

Not enough news out there for me to spend too much time for me to comment on, but I do still read when I've got an opportunity. I've been real busy lately... some of you will remember that I picked up an '04 Neon R/T about 13 months ago. Well, I ended up doing a motor swap to an SRT powertrain basically all by myself. It was expensive since I didn't buy a donor car and just bought every part piece by piece, so that drove me into the floor as far as money went. I did the swap while doing 20 credit hours at school (still have 2 semesters left before I either go to grad school for Aerospa…

My pacemaker was replaced on Monday, February 12, 2007, a day before ACHA's Lobby Day in Washington DC, at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Since the location was switched from my abdomin to my left-side chest area [the original wires are blocked by scarring from the 2003 surgery, causing the old pacemaker/battery to work harder/longer], I stayed overnight. They put the new pacemaker in my chest ... and then decided to take me to the OR to remove the old pacemaker, since it was under the muscle tissue. Luckily, I do not remember waking up with the breathing tube down my throat this time. I made it home safely, thanks to Mom and Dad, on Tuesday, despite Chicag…

I can hardly believe it has been a month since my road trip ENDED. It's been a rough few weeks since I got back home, which hasn't helped. I finally had the CT Scan of my heart/chest Saturday, August 6, 2011, and, given some other things happening (mostly not-so-good; one maybe good), I may be scarce for a while. I haven't even driven my MCs much this year ... MAYBE 100 miles so far on each of them. I kinda doubt I'll get 1,000 miles on 'em this year for what would be the 3rd year in a row. So if you're in CA, a fan of this ride, and want one last chance to ride it, do so before it closes for good on September 3. And just fyi... the ride that will be built on the BTTF's site in both parks will be a Simpson's ride. I sad and happy at the same time.

I say Toyota Camry/Avalon or some other non-exciting Toyota. Not saying that Supra, Celica & MR2 drivers are angels but they tend to be about average... not better or worse than most. Me and XP had this conversation after we noticed on a few road trips that about 60-70% of all awkward driving situations were caused by drivers in Toyota cars. They cut people off, have no concept of the blind spot & to make matters worse in some cases they're clueless & jerks. A very bad combination on today's roads. Your feelings on this matter?

We like to complain at length about the bad ideas incorporated into vehicles these days, but what are the bad ideas they haven't implemented yet? Here's what I'm thinking: - A front engined, front wheel drive motorcycle with the engine mounted in front of the front tire, on the front fork. The space where the engine normally goes is used for storage of something. - A convertible with a removable fabric floor instead of a removable fabric roof. - A rear engined, rear wheel steering, front wheel drive pickup with the bed over the front wheels instead of the rear. - A cabover economy car. - A set of in-dash smoke machines instead of Service Engine Soon lights that expe…

He's got an '04 Silverado 1500 extended cab Z71, 122k miles, with a 330-horse GM replacement engine and Flowmaster exhaust. It was like going home. Well, luckily the "curse" hasn't befell it, but head gasket woes have. I took it to the GM dealer the other day and went to pick it up today and found out that the #5 cylinder has moisture and coolant in it. This is bad timing because I go back to school in a week and they won't be able to to get it in for at least two weeks. Also, the GM dealer here is being bought out by the Ford dealer, so it may end up being serviced over at the Ford dealer costing more money due to higher labor costs there. The GM dealer will repair it for $800, and another place we checked can do it for $650-700. I will be buying a new car in May, so my options are either A) pour $800 into a c…

Driving on my way home this afternoon from work I had the UNpleasure of seeing a pretty bad accident. Police and rescue personnel had not responded yet, however; being a helper on a few friends Volunteer Fire Depts, I responded as best I could. Apparently, a guy driving a relatively new Civic wasn't paying a large amount of attention to what he was doing, changed lanes without looking, ran sidelong into a Kenworth, got turned in front of it, Kenworth driver slammed onto his brakes, Toyota Sequoia driver slammed into the back of the Kenworth's trailer (happened to be hauling logs), then another Honda, this one an Accord ran into the back of the Toyota....after that thing…

Not those balls, pervs. I'm talking sports, as in I'm in a funk because there are no worthwhile sports this time of year. The NFL is a bunch of whiny, overpayed jackasses, and the games aren't really that exciting. College football is dead to me since Mizzou cant seem to beat a halfway decent team. The NBA is worthless, the only good part of the game is the last two minutes, since just about every game is close, but then there are timeouts after every play. I cant watch a basketball game when it goes to commercial every thirty seconds. College basketball doesn't interest me because all the best players are already in the NBA, plus neither Mizzou nor Missouri State i…

So my grandpa had an old model when I was a kid that I always liked, but I never knew what I was, only that it was a very old car, Pre-WWII. Well, lately, I've inherited it so to speak (he's been gone since '99 or so). I've been trying to find out what it was but I never had anything to go on, and I know precious little about prewar automobiles. It's a very old car certainly, I would guess around 1915, seeing as that was the year he was born. It's missing it's radiator cap, so if it had a car mascot, there's no way I could have known; but there is an emblem on the radiator housing/grille that has a red R inside a rectangle. Because of this, we thought it could have been …

Hey all, Does anybody have any opinions to share about baltimore? My girl friend and I are thinking of moving there late next year. We both graduate in may and I can easily get another senior paralegal or project manager job in DC. We both like the idea of Baltimore because it is so much cheaper then the greater NYC area where we live now even though we would both be working in DC and we would be getting paid roughly equal to NY wages. From what I've gathered Baltimore has parts you wouldn't want to be caught dead in but has great parts along the river like Ferderal hill. We're both suckers for row houses and we've been to some of the good areas and really like t…

Yesterday I put the Sierra on Rt 95 S and headed to the Baltimore Convention Center to check out the Motor Trend-sponsored Auto Show. The show opened at 10, I got there around 11:30, so the crowd was still fairly thin. First display I came upon was Chevrolet, with the glorious Vettes out front, at the entry point. Off to the side was the 2009 Aveo5 LT in silver, which, I have to say looked better than all the photos suggest. Without seeing it side by side with the current car, the new front does not look too big as I'd feared, that and the touched-up tail do a good job of modernizing the little guy. The sunroof, alloys and two-tone leatherette interior add to the app…

Against owners will.... http://www.telegram.com/article/2012...106219803/1116 WORCESTER — As David vs. Goliath struggles go, they don't get much more lopsided than a lone muscle-car enthusiast going up against a mega-bank with more than $2 trillion in assets. But that's exactly what Aaron Dahrooge of Worcester has been doing for three months now in an effort to get back his beloved 1973 Dodge Challenger. The distinctive muscle car, which is painted “plum crazy” purple and has a burly V-8 engine with a chrome air scoop popping up through the hood, was taken from the garage of his deceased mother's home in Burncoat in late March. Bank of America has vital information, …

So my dad sent me an email that I loved but found it hard to swallow that someone would sell off a sealed barn full of auto's for pennies and not look to see what was in it first. Yet here is an amazing barn find. http://www.intuh.net/barnfinds/ Here is the research done to get a better grab on the story, but I have to say I would love some of these old cars. http://www.sportscarmarket.com/columns-blogs/news/2709-portuguese-barn-find-fact-or-fiction What is your Favorite? This sealed Barn has 180 cars in it.

I spent a few hours at Barrett-Jackson today...great cool, cloudy weather. About 1300 cars this year...nice selection. In the main exhibit hall, Ford and Chevy had some large new car displays...incl. lots of 2012 and 2013 Mustangs...the '13 Shelby GT500 and Boss 302 were particularly of interest, along w/ the '12 versions.... interesting styling changes on the '13 Mustangs. Amongst the new Chevys, I got to see the Spark, Sonic, '13 Malibu, and Camaro ZL1 in person for the first time... sat in the new Malibu..pretty nice inside, but the rear seat area and rear door openings seem very tight... As far as the vintage cars being auctioned, beyond the usual dozens of Cama…

Spent several hours this afternoon at the annual B-J event...was a sunny 75 degree day in dusty Scottsdale. Indoors, the new car displays from Ford, Chrysler, and GM were impressive--- lots of new Mustangs in a variety of trim levels--GTs, Shelbys, Boss 302s, and aftermarket tuners versions....really liked the MKZ, first I'd seen in person..nice interior, really interesting exterior design, esp. the rear. Loved the various SRT Mopies (Challenger, Charger, 300, JGC)...saw the new Viper for the first time, very impressed. At the GM stand, the new Silverado looked quite good in longbed crew cab form in a taupe color. The Hot Wheels Camaro SS was fun. Chec…

http://public.fotki.com/robertwadehall/az-auto-auctions-2014/ I went to the Gooding & Company auction on Friday and Barrett-Jackson Friday and Saturday, took a few pics at the link above. Saw quite a few interesting cars, incl. a McLaren F1 LM (first I'd ever seen in person), 1998 Ferrari F1 car, various '50s-60s Ferraris, Maseratis, Lancias, Alfas, and countless muscle cars and '50s-70s American iron. Fun weekend. At the GM exhibit saw the '14 Camaro Z/28 in matte pearl white (Rick Hendrick bought it for $650k or so), saw and sat in a silver Chevy SS and dark red '14 CTS V-sport....really liked the SS and CTS in person, look better than in photos.

I've noticed this for years, but thought I'd pass it along for anyone who might be interested. If you are straight, young and cute, you can make a killing as a bartender working in a gay bar. I got to talking to a 25-year old guy (I mentioned I am a car nut, and he is too) who went to college, graduated with a degree in finance, yet enjoys far higher pay and better hours slinging drinks than he could in the finance racket. In fact, the whole bartending staff at this particular establishment (the Blue Moon in Rehoboth, DE) is straight. I'd say they're being very smart to use their good looks working a fun job, making lots of money toward a secure future. Thanks for …

I threw together this collage to show a long-running & widespread practice for a number of decades. You have your Chevys, Fords, Dodges, Internationals, Studebakers & Jeeps commonly doing the same thing on multiple truck lines : painting grilles (and sometimes also bumpers & headlight bezels) white versus the higher trim's chrome pieces. Looking back, it's interesting to me that it was pretty much universal. White is usually the cheapest paint, but in my opinion; it looks a lot better than unpainted black plastic. Wonder how a 'stripper' trim modern truck would look done up in a similar manner?
