Hey all, My GF needs a car and can't afford one, so, since we are extremley serious with wedding bells in the future, I decided to be a good BF and get her one. Now I'm not going off half cocked and buying her a car that will be in her name in case things don't work out (It will be in my name and I'll add her to my insurance) but I'm find of excited by the prospect of getting an SUV to backup my Mustand for the winter time. So I laid down the law and told her we could have 20-25k budget for anything domestic. So this is what the options are Saturn Vue- 2010 Equinox Jeep Cheroke. Normally these would would either be stripper models for the price range or…

OK, so the choices have been narrowed based on her requirements, and the cars that fit them that she likes have been selected. So here is the final list of all the ones she is considering... 1. Eclipse (Spyder or coupe) 2. Mustang (Convertible or coupe) 3. G6 (Hardtop convertible only, doesn't like the coupe) 4. Altima coupe 5. Accord coupe 6. BMW 128 coupe / cabrio 7. Mazda RX-8 Eos, MINI, and C30 were all considered and dropped from the list. So, of those seven, what would you choose and why?

Warning-this is a rant, but it is how I really feel. This comes in part from Miata net and hanging out with a few of the VW/Audi guys...and talking with people at work or in various social circles. The feeling seems to be widespread that most of what is being built right now is just plain..well..butt awful ugly. I need to know if you all think 2009 is the worst year ever for car design. I just look at what some car makers are building, and I just want to weep. Not to sound like a Cheers and Gears nutjob, but a rusty 73 Maverick on jackstands looks better visually IMHO than the following: Anything from Nissan other than the 350Z or the GTR. The Z and GTR aren't …

I do an awful lot of thinkin' about cars throughout the course of my day.... I'm always boring Marcia with my "if I ever have the money..." and "wouldn't it be cool if..." type comments about cars. Anyway I just think there are many important questions out there that I need to answer during the course of my life. Here's a short list off the top of my head, thirteen to be exact since it's a lucky number. You are about to enter the empty space known only as: "Sixty8Panther's Brain" 1. How much money will it take to realize my dream of having a 30s Hot Rod powered by a radial aircraft engine? …

Have gas prices already started affecting used SUV/Truck pricing? March 6th 2011 - Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com According to GasBuddy.com, the national average for gasoline has spiked from $3.12 per gallon to $3.49 per gallon between February 16th and March 6th. As some of you know, I keep an eye on prices for used Chevrolet Avalanches and Oldsmobile Bravadas. I am already noticing a drop in pricing on just these two models. For example, an '05 Avalanche with 63,000 miles and leather near me has an asking price of just $17,999. Six months ago, an Avalanche with that equipment would be over $20k used. Higher mileage examples have fallen from the $17k range to …

Does your viewpoint on whether or not GM should get a bailout have to do with your love for GM products or do you truly think it will be better for the automobile sector and the economy of 300+ million people? I still havent heard all the sides but im leaning to letting the private enterprise deal with its problems with private enterprise funds. What about yourself?

I have decided to make a Tight Whips sort of club thing. This time it is for any designers or photchoppers. I can make you a little sig saying that you are a member as well. You can use or current sig but even better would be if you could find a preliminary sketch of any car or even your own sketch or photochop and use that if you wish. This will be the official list....1. American_Revolution_2005Just copy and paste the list before you and add the number and username. We'll see what we can do from there on. Got any suggestions for anything such as maybe a suggestion forum or whatever. We'll see what we can do and see if the admins approve. ANy suggestions are welcome.

Caught part of a promo for the U.S. Top Gear latest episode- looks to up The Bar on Staggeringly Stupid. I saw a Roadmaster wagon filled with water, driving & dripping, and a Fiero intentionally rear-ending a circa '70 Cutlass. I struggle to imagine how they're going to top undercut this feat. Much like the Hasselhoff show- this train wreck should've been stopped after 1 episode.

After watching that Drug Addled Amy Winehouse edge out Taylor Swift for best new Artist, which is, I believe, setting a bad example... The Cobalt's brakes just committed suicide. One minute I had brakes, the next... *grind, shake, screech, clank* It feels like the front pads decided to disintegrate. It was very sudden. I knew I would probably need brakes soon, but I certainly wasn't expecting that. I haven't had any time to inspect them, but needless to say, it can't be driven like this. I have half the braking power and its very obviously doing further damage by the sounds and vibrations its making. I hear and feel more from the left side, so it may just be the front left. Another random issue: My ignition release is being screwy. Turning off the key requires hitting the shift lever a few times before…

As I've traveled, I've often wondered why people decide to live and work in the towns/cities in which they live/work. Mostly, I think about this in terms of the small "mom and pop" type stores or shops or service centers that cater to only a small geographical region. Of course, with the internet, in most cases, those same businesses can reach farther than ever before. Yet, I wonder what brought them to set up a brick'n'mortar business and home in the location they have chosen. Was the decision made because of the location of family? The location of friends? Or, was it the cost of living? The cost of doing business? Or, was it due to a particular opportunity? And…

I'm having a serious and quite horrible case of buyer's remorse. Today, I got up at eight a.m. and drove through Clay, Jackson, Laurel and Rockcastle Counties with the single hope that I would finally find a junkyard with some decent '80s GM iron. The Monte is in desperate need of new gauges (the speedometer and voltmeter are dead, the tach is going out, and the temp gauge now has a broken needle), new interior trim, a new multifunction lever, and a few miscellaneous engine parts, all of which negatively affect my car. The local junkyards pretty much have nothing. The solitary Monte I found at A&A Auto Parts, the junkyard located just 2 miles away from me, had an…

Everybody has certain songs that mean something to them or are instantly recognizable when they hear them on the radio--even if for the first time in years. What songs defined your childhood and if you have a memory, list it. Early Childhood Lionel Richie - Dancin' on the Ceiling One of my earliest memories is of this song when I was 2 or so. My dad had this CD and would pick me up and tap my feet on the ceiling...I loved it. Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town I used to listen to the classic rock station a lot when I was little, and this was a song I always heard and liked but could never get fully recorded onto tape from my boombox. It would always come on …

For me, I'm not ashamed to admit that, although I consider myself a "Rear-drive first, front-drive last" enthusiast, there are some front-drive cars that make me stop and pay attention. So Saturday night after taking my family out to dinner at a Japanese Hibachi restaurant for the little guy's birthday (he's 4 years old now!), we ride through a couple of GM dealership lots so I can see what vehicles they have (I was looking for G8s, but also anything else that caught my eye). My wife on the other hand feels we should be going used for now to get "more car for less buck", which does make sense. While I was looking at the 2 remaining G8s on the BPG lot, she was looking at a used 2006 Buick Terraza CXL FWD. Afterwards, at the Chevy dealer across the street, while me and the little guy were looking at 'Bumblebe' (his name for the all-new Camaro), she was …

Car & Driver 10 Best for 2007 Every year the entire Car and Driver staff gathers at a rural site about 30 miles west of our home office in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a week of evaluating all the new cars and, hopefully, avoiding cops. We judge the cars in three general areas: First, how well the car performs its intended functions. We expect sports cars to be fast and exhilarating, while we presume a family sedan will be practical. Second, we show a preference for the more engaging cars in each category; be it better driving manners, a double-take-inducing look, or a powerful engine. Finally, we are suckers for a good deal, so an inexpensive car that’s fast, fun, and …

So I have another 900 mile round trip journey to make next week, but this one is for family reasons rather than work. I can get a rental car for $250 all in, and that includes the extra insurance. Using the standard mileage deduction, using my own car would cost me $486 (900 X 0.54)... assume that includes fuel. A $250 rental plus figure $100 in gas. The other kink in the chain.... the Buick really needs tires... It'll make it through this trip, but I'm nearly down to the wear bars. Those will be about $750 (I think I'm going with Triple-Treads and see if I can skip snow tires this year)

I thought about this over the weekend, wondering how many times I've driven it, since it occurred to me I knew just about all the exit numbers and the names that go with them. It would be I-5 between Portland OR and Seattle WA (173 miles). My parents live in the former and I have lived in the latter for 3 - 1/2 years. That's worth about 70 trips right there. Then about 50 or so when I lived in Portland and went up to Seattle for the hell of it. Then another 30 when I have lived in other places, went to see my parents and roadtripped to "the Emerald City" (Seattle's nickname) or continued on to Vancouver BC Canada. That's about 52,000 miles driven on that route al…

This here pic is one I spliced together. The B&W shot to the left was taken in 1948, the color shot- this past weekend. I didn't notice either mark until I got home and downloaded my pics and compared them to the older shots, or I would have investigated it close up. It's the same location and the same stone block, right in the middle of nowhere. Kinda spooky- I could see if the fresh marks were in '48, but vice-versa; IDK. Must mean something.

I had to take the POS in because, in a typical showing of Ford quality, the $h!mobile left me stranded with........a bad radio. The cd player doesn't eject. They had to order a new radio (isn't it the same one they use in like every new Ford you can buy?) so it'll be a few days until I have a cd player again. Minor inconvenience really, the radio still works so I still have music, just not good music.

I am about ready to buy a new car, and have narrowed the search down to a previous generation E-class, 2007-2009, or a used Hyundai Genesis 4.6. I am looking for rwd, and not really a fan of the 300C or the CTS, and don't want a BMW either. So that leaves me with these two, first up is a 43,000 mile Genesis 4.6 and it is under a 2 hour drive to the dealer. http://www.ncautoauction.com/detail-2009-hyundai-genesis-4dr_sdn_4_6l_v8-used-10629235.html The other option is a 2008, 69,000 mile E550 with AMG sport package and Designo interior package, so it is fully loaded, with a good carfax report, but I would be buying it without seeing it in person and have to spend $750 t…

Cell phone ban urged for teen drivers Transportation officials say phone use and inexperience on road do not mix when it comes to teens. September 21, 2005: 7:02 AM EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Banning teenagers from using cell phones or other wireless devices while learning to drive should be a national auto safety priority, say U.S. transportation safety officials. The National Transportation Safety Board put the proposed restriction on its "most wanted" list of safety improvements for the upcoming year, which also includes older appeals for more states to impose limits on teens' night driving and carrying of passengers. "Recognition of the GM Name" By: Jerry Friedman Looking at a towering sign reaching for the sky at a local Chevy dealer, I realized something. Something we've all known for a long time now: the GM badges glued to the lower fenders and doors of every Chevy since 2006 are simply a waste of a few dollars that could've been spent elsewhere on the car. But it wasn't until I glanced up at that sign and studied the GM logo I finally began to understand why that one little blemish was such a stupid, oafish move. GM claimed back in '05 that they felt that the GM name didn't get much recognition from the public and the buyer. Period. So, in order to make themselves feel a littl…

I grew up with a dog - an Australian Shepherd. I'm still a "dog person." There are some cats where I live and all, except one, are skittish. This one grayish-brown tabby is a friendly little $h!. I thought he had an owner but I was told he does not, though people take care of him by feeding him. He comes right up to you and, if you sit down, it jumps into your lap and wants to be pet. He's a smart one, too...if you scratch his belly, he will grab you with both front paws but retracts the claws so he doesn't scratch you. My dog would do that...you'd tug on her tail, she'd take your hand into her mouth, but NOT bite down. Damn, domestic animals are…

Lately my car has been getting great mpg, and ironically I've been driving faster lately. Usually I go about 75 on the interstate, but the last week I've been waking up later and have a 45 minute drive to work, so I go about 80. I just filled up my car tonight and discovered I got 27 mpg! The EPA rates my car at 25 mpg and before I had my head gasket replaced I was getting 22-23 mpg. This is about 85% highway, 15% city driving. I would've assumed I'd be getting worse since I've been speeding more lately, but I'm actually doing better! How does everyone else do on highway MPG?

All of the sudden I am having tons of trouble viewing certain websites. Unfortunately, one of them is CZ28.com - a site I really enjoy. It seems like only those sites with offsite linked ads are giving me trouble, especially "ads by Google". CZ28 has been one of the most reliable sites I've ever been on until now. This change came at me "out of the blue" and I can't figure out what the trouble is. Pages can literally take minutes to load if these ads are present, but other pages of the same site without ads seem fine. WTF?

Newest dream car garage- In this dream car garage, you are allowed 5 cars, the catch being-you have to give all five away to other posters here. The other catch is that I want you to move as far away from "Traditional" choices as possible. We would all like a Raptor, Miata, SS, C7 Corvette Z06, SRT Challenger and the like...your challenge is to find something "different" and give it to Another member here. This is also a "Double Challenge" if you accept it, in that you can give a pair of cars to said individual...but if you give a "Pair" one has to be brand new 2017-2018 and one has to be at least ten years old or so... Let's begin... First Gift-…

Today my friend and I (the one with the Corolla) were getting out of clas to go to somewhere in Mass to take pictures for my photography class. We got in my the car (I had the Intrepid today) and I started it up. I went behind the seat to get my camera out. Apparently he either forgot I started it or didn't think I turned the key al; the way because he asked Him: "Is the car on?" Me: "yeah" I put it in reverse back out Him: "Wow, it's really quiet" Seems every time we go for a ride in it he's more impressed with the car. So how quiet (GTOs and other loud V8s/purposely loud vehicles need not apply ) or how refined is your vehicle's engine? Like I've said before…

Weeeel, today was the first "major" snowstorm of the year and I went alone to church this morning, so I was driving my G5. You may recall when I purchased it in May. When I was going through the buying process I was also looking at another Impala, the G6 and the GP. Fact is I wanted to go small because it was ultimately just going to end up my brother's car. When I was first looking at said car the window sticker, the build sheet, and a GM vehicle history printout I was supplied with all showed the car was equipped with the Enhanced Traction System, which has two prerequisites. In order to have ETS the car must have ABS and the 4SP Auto transmission. The reason f…

Plans, plans...you know they change. So what are your plans with your current fleet? Any of the above? We all know what new cars we want, but not so much of the ones we have..... Mine- 2003(sedan) & 2004(coupe) Cavaliers....Both keepers. I'm running them both into the ground. They aren't worth much to sell anyways.......the 03 will become my beater when the wife gets a newer car, and the 04 becomes my (back to) school ride and track car. 2006 Cobalt-my current beater, looks like a keeper for now. The communting car, I'll decide after it's paid off (little over a year left). If I get a Cruze, it could make a good winter beater to keep that Cruze …

This weekend is/will be fantastic weather wise. Low to mid 50'a, sunshine, and a gentle breeze. Can't waste the whole weekend indoors that's for sure, so it's time to get a head start on spring cleaning for the cars. What's done: Vacuumed and cleaned the interiors of both cars Detailed the Intrepid's interior (vents, switches, cracks, etc.) Cleaned the dirty off of the door frames Cleaned the dirt and grime off of the lower inside edge of the doors Cleaned and organized the trunks Added P/S fluid to the Prizm Cleaned the gunk off of the P/S fluid reservoir What's on tap for tomorrow: Adjust the serpentine belt on the Intrepid Thoroughly wash …

Okay people... I'm tired of the Malibu already. I usually lease, however the wife talked me into financing. I've had the car 26 months already (on a 60-month payment loan). I know I'll probaly not be happy when dealing with trade-in values, but I want to get back into leasing and want a new car other than the Malibu. Going to the Philly Auto Show next weekend witht he wife to find out what might possibly be the next vehicle. So I'm going to make this fun and ask all of you C&Gers what I should get, or at least look into. Here are my guidelines: 1. Must be a GM vehicle 2. Must be a four door (hey, I have an 11 y-o and a 6 month old!) 3. Must be something th…

We who post here, we're red-blooded CAR fans...we like performance, we like being low to the ground...they're simply more interesting, more fun, and they just do it for us.... In the beginning, SUVs were called 4x4s, and were only made by six companies: Jeep Land Rover Toyota (Land Cruiser has to be one of the greatest inventions) Chevy/GMC Ford Dodge Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Mercedes came in with their entries in the late 70s and early 80s...they all were rugged, real off-roading machines that knew their role, and left all of that trying to be the best peoplemover and citymobile crap to cars, the way mature intended. Then, two ugly things happened: Suzuk…

So today around 2pm I gave XP a ride to work after he put the Cutlass on my front lawn with a for sale sign. We notice that there's a '97/'98 Honda Accord in the parking lot at Dounkin Donuts in Drum Hill Chelmsford with what looks like a broken tie-rod, I pulled in to investigate and this is what I saw. I laughed and took the photos as I asked the kid WTF happened, he says "it just let go as I turned the wheel... the axle slipped right out & the suspension just snapped" As I walked away I said lound enough for him to hear... "Gotta love those Hondas, next time go for RWD." Then I got inside my RWD Q45 and drove away laughing my @$$ off as I told …

So the Bonneville is in need of repairs and has numerous annoyances at the moment... much more than I'm willing to pay for. Plus, with two kids, I'm out of space when it comes to traveling. Ergo, I'm seriously looking to let it go and move into something bigger. As the thread title suggests, my budget is really low, to the tune of no more than $8000. Now I realize that most of the vehicles I look for in this price range will be high in miles, but there are some reasonable examples out there on a miles-per-year basis. So, fellow C&Gers, here's my short list in order of preference: 1) GMT360s, preferably with 7 seats. Pros: Not a weak engine in the bunch, space, …

Had a good long conversation with a sales rep there while ogling a white G8 GXP. They have had 4 and already sold 3. They are actively attempting to get more GXPs and GTs, and trying to trade away the G3s and G5s they reluctantly took as stock. The rep reported that most G8 sales are V8s and that most buyers were coming out of Euro brands. Just some food for thought. They have a Solstice Targa inbound.

I just ran some insurance quotes over at Allstate and, I have to ask, does this make any sense to you? *1998 Chevrolet Camaro, V6, Base: $3,150.00 *1998 Pontiac Firebird, V6, Base: $2,760.00 That's right. It's pretty much the same friggen car and the Firebird comes out cheaper on insurance. (And, you know, it never occured to me until just a minute ago to see what a Firebird would cost me on insurance; I thought it would cost around $200 bucks above the Camaro.) Well, folks, looks like I may just be finding a Firebird to drive. That's not a bad insurance rate, really.

Good acts are hard to follow. Especially in the auto business. Maybe more so in the auto business, actually. The steady march of technology is sometimes nullified by more stringent regulations, falling profits, a change in focus, and sometimes just as a result of straight up flubbing it. So with that in mind, I ask you what your dream garage would look like if you were only able to use today's cars' immediate predecessors. The rules- 1) Production models only. 2) These are your only vehicles. 3) Maximum of 5 choices. 4) Any variation of that previous model is allowed, even if the exact trim was not offered again. 5) Your choice …

Finally managed to find myself a job this month with Advance Auto Parts. I had applied there at the beginning of August after several failed attempts thanks to their online application system not working. Hadn't heard anything back in 3 weeks so I had given up. However I got a call at the end of August for an interview, and was hired on the spot with an immediate $1 raise because I have automotive knowledge. I'm very happy about this. The design industry is terrible as far as job openings go, even more so where I live now. Advance is only 7 minutes street so I have a short, easy commute that's easy on gas. As far as service jobs go, this is what I wanted most: something …

Or do I not have the worst luck ever? Seriously... just last week, I simply rode my 300EX into town for something to do. I ran out of gas and got picked up by the cops. All the while throughout the past 6 months, I've been without a car. I haven't been able to get another car or sell my GA. I haven't been about to sell my 'in excellent condition' 300EX. Now, I can't even get a loan, but it doesn't matter since the car I wanted has been sold. Needless to say, I absolutely cannot get a job without a car. That's reality. So... when trying to fix my GA, me and my dad can't. Don't know what's wrong with it nor what to do to it. Because of all this, I've been wanting to put m…
