This bill was passed a couple weeks ago by President Bush without Congressional approval or oversight; mainstream news has not covered it, in fact most don't even know about it (I found out via a skyscraper forum). Essentially, this bill allows for the "continuity" of America in the event of a catastrophic disaster that would give extraordinary powers to the executive branch, throwing the system of checks and balances out the window. A catastrophic disaster could be another Katrina, 9/11, major earthquake in California, economic depression...you name it. Not only does the executive branch gain more power, but the president can take control of "private sector owners and…

Hey ladies and gents, So the gf and I finally got Netflix last night(signed up for it) and we had intended to use her ps3 because we are always at her house when we watch tv/movies. Well, i have a 3rd gen ps3, I think - first gen when they changed the "body". And I know I can watch Netflix from my PS3. Well hers doesn't have the "tv/movie services" tab like mine does. Sorry, forgot to say, she has a first gen PS3(plays ps2 games). The question really is.. can Netflix be watched from her first gen PS3? If so, how? Thank You!

I finished my Christmas shopping at the Phesant Lane Mall in Nashua, New Hampshire at about 6:30pm on Friday. Left the mall in the Datsun, pulled out onto Daniel Webster Highway a few minutes later at a green light & put on my left blinker. I'm just about to turn, having yielded to a few cars leaving the Costco across the street, but just as I start rolling at about 15mph I slam on my brakes because I realise that one car in particular is not stopping at the red, in fact a set of HIDs is headed for me at a very scarry rate. I had about 1.5 seconds to react, I pull back in my seat and push the shifter into neutral, for a split second I think, …

The wind around here is crazy, trucks were getting blown all over the highway on my way in this morning. The power keeps going out every half hour and taking out the network. Fun. I blame the wind. For some reason it's 11AM and the whole lab smells like fried chicken, but nobody knows why, or where the chicken is. Not sure if I can blame the wind for that one. Shaping up to be a strange day. Anybody else experience crazy winds?

As much as the actual military-oriented ones were, I planned on doing an auto one for the occasion. In honor of Veterans Day, it will be based upon Domestic nameplate vehicles. Rules- 1) Maximum of 5 choices. 2) These are your only vehicles. 3) Production cars sold in the US only. 4) Cars must be a model name or at least generation that is NO LONGER BUILT- this is the Veteran part, obviously. 5) As long as the vehicle is no longer on sale, any era is allowed. Happy Veterans Day, and enjoy!!

Today I went to the dealership where I bought my '03 ION Quad Coupe to check out an Astra. The same lady who sold me that car went along for the ride, in a red 3-door manual with no options, priced at $18,400 or so. To sell for that price across town from other more-or-less Delta-based GM small cars, the Astra had to be loaded with "kit", as they say on The Continent, and it is. All of GM's latest safety equipment, including head curtains and Stabilitrak come on this car. Power equipment including central locking, mirrors and dual express-down windows are there as well. Handsome, 17" rims look good on the car, along with foglamps. This car has a lot of standard equ…

Hey all. As some of you know I had an 06 malibu SS that I was planning on trading in on a G8 GT when they came to market. Well due to the fact that I was a complete dumb ass those plans had to be flushed down the drain as I got a DUI last december. long story short with that is that I was at an office party and had been drinking pretty steadily for a few hours. Normally If I have more than two beers I don't even consider driving as I've seen first hand how a DUI/DWI can affect a persons life. Unfortunatley I was a bit under the weather and I was also homesick as I hadn;t visited my family in a few months. I was supposed to go up there that night and I felt a very …

Fake news has been in the press a lot lately, so I figured let's generate some of our own. Rules: 1. It has to be automotive related, no politics, not even a hint of politics. 2. It has to be plausible enough to be believable by someone who isn't a car enthusiast. (I.E., no Tucker is not resuming operations, no GM is not reviving Pontiac) 3. Write it as if it were a press release or news announcement.

If you ask me why I come up with bone-headed ideas don't ask me why or where they come from... Last spring when I still had extra cash before another new Pontiac, new kitchen gadgets for the wife, and a son heading into college I looked into having our home professionally landscaped. Yeah well the two men father and son biz I had doing it had a slight problem the father fell off his roof and isn't doing so hot so now I am stuck landscaping. I have decent sized large front shrubs that need to go... The folks that were going to help landscape had a 2006 Silverado 2500HD with a Duramax and were going to "tow out the shrubs". Well I have got thinking and a hitch needs to go o…

My Great Grandfather passed away quietly in his sleep last night. He was my friend and mentor. He had a calm, steady, intellectualism. He spoke 7 languages fluently and has been on every continent except for Antarctica. He was highschool educated and rose to become President of the Okonite Company, one of the oldest wire cable companies in the country, where he demonstrated pioneering leadership and understanding that taking care of the company's workforce was in the company's best interest. Just prior to his retirement in 1976, he arranged the following: He was a quiet man who's life centered around taking care of others. He never commanded but always sugge…

on somethin other than prostitutes or drugs... check out the boys at MIT are up to this time. The cheapest space camera available to the public. The two students (from MIT, of course) put together a low-budget rig to fly a camera high enough to photograph the curvature of the Earth. Instead of rockets, boosters and expensive control systems, they filled a weather balloon with helium and hung a styrofoam beer cooler underneath to carry a cheap Canon A470 compact camera. Instant hand warmers kept things from freezing up and made sure the batteries stayed warm enough to work. Of course, all this would be pointless if the guys couldn’t find the rig when it landed, so…

It occurred to me today that I never shared any of my pictures from my trip last month, so now I guess would be as good a time as any! Very lucky to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum whose inventory includes a VC-137 like those used by Kennedy as well as Eisenhower's Constellation and Truman's DC-4. Not to mention a Convair B-36 Peacemaker. The Constellation has to be my all-time favorite aircraft so it was nice to finally see one in person. Also paid a visit to the Barry Goldwater memorial park and took in a Suns game.

Beginning Friday, April 7 (continuing April 14, 21 and 28), I'm hosting a radio show 8p-11p central time, with 8-8:05, 9-9:05 and 10-10:05 being newscasts. I signed a contract (I'm paying for the airtime) with the local radio station (WRMN 1410 AM) to host "CD Showcase", something I've been wanting to do ever since I graduated college. If it "takes off", I may be able to get advertisers to offset some of the costs ... and continue doing the show throughout the year. We'll see . If you're not in the NE IL area, you can listen online: www.wrmn1410.com click on "warp radio" Here are a few of the promos/segues I recorded for the show.... ("The Song Remembers When" by …

What car would you re-badge back? An Opel Omega sold in the US as the Cadillac Catera who's owner turned it back into an Opel "Re-badging" and "Badge Engineering" are 4-letter words amongst auto enthusiasts. Car companies do it to shave the cost of developing a whole new vehicle. Usually in the process, the brand identities of both the donor and recipient brands get muddled. In our example above, Cadillac was trying to shoot for the European entry luxury market by importing and re-badging the respected in its home market, but decidedly not luxury, Opel Omega. The Omega probably could have sold successfully on it's own merits had it not been sold at Cadillac deale…

Although most of you probably were too busy to notice, I've largely been absent since May. Long story short, my laptop died and I've been too broke to buy a new one. That should change in the coming weeks and I'll be slowly stepping back in to the old swing of things and contributing articles again. For those of you that listened to the recent podcast, you'll know that I've landed a new job as a part-time pharmacy tech and, with any luck, I should be on track to attend college this fall. Until I have a new computer, I'll mainly be contributing to the site through the podcast since my iPhone works very well for Skype, so if you enjoy my annoying banter be sure to listen. …

I'm always having a new one every month it seems. Instead of dragging things out though, I'm going to cut to the chase here: I currently have a 1984 15th Anniversary Recaro Trans Am on the line. In exchange I'll have to hand over the Camaro for it, it's a dead-even swap. While the Trans Am is far from being perfect, it is 100 percent complete, 98 percent rust free, and in everyday driver status; it just needs the interior refreshed in a few places (headliner, sailpanel fabric, carpet, and the outer seats, typical minor ess-ayche-eye-tee), a new starter (the current one works but it's a bit stubborn), and the paint refreshed (you can get away without repainting it). The T/…

With the introduction of the Car Of Tomorrow, Ford is staying with Fusion, Toyota is running Camry, Dodge switched to Avenger which is the smaller car that real-life competes with the others, why isn't Chevy going to Malibu instead of using Impala? Impala is just not the same class as the others. I know it is "large mid size" but come on... This would have worked if Dodge stayed with Charger, Ford moved to Taurus (which also doesn't work that well) and I don't know what Toyota would use, Avalon maybe? I know they are trying to stimulate sales of the Impala, and in a couple of years it will be more appropriate with rear drive coming back, but the new Malibu would ben…

On a happier note from ocn's inquiry, last night I turned in my last final. I just finished an evening MBA with an emphasis in accounting(taxation). I slept at least 10 hours upon coming home. What a relief. No, I am NOT a professional student. I hate that. A professional student lingers in college, changes their major, has grades are like a yo-yo, and studies less than marketable subjects to prolong the experience. So, here's the list...to come full circle: BS in Business - day program, earned on time, with honors, went to work in field in 3 weeks Grad degree in Architecture - day program, earned ahead of time (3 years instead of 3.5), with high honors, went to w…

You're supposed to be able to find anything on the web, but I have searched a few times for this one car and come up empty (looking for pics). Maybe one of you guys knows where it is. There have been, I believe, 4 proposals for a 'new' Duesenberg to date (excluding 'classic repros'). This is the latest, the '06 'Torpedo' (frankly, it's hideous): Here's the '66, which came the closest to production; reportedly 50 were sold, but only 1 was built before legal issues cropped up and things were shut down. The prototype exists in fine shape at the A-C-D museum: This was a '63 proposal from Virgil Exner (he also proposed a number of other 'renewal' classics). Never buil…

A friend of mine recently died of cancer. I was sad to see her go in such a way as she was a beautiful soul and a wonderful friend. For her funeral, a group of us (3 ladies and 5 guys) all got together and shaved our heads and donated the contents to locks of love to have wigs made. We attended her funeral bald headed. Since I shaved my head I have continued to shave it every night. I normally have thick hair and I must say its a big change to get accustomed to. I didn't realize how much of my body heat my hair held in my body. It's cold bein bald.

Have you become a fan of a TV show AFTER its original run? Or, have you started watching a TV show after a few seasons have already been aired? For me ... in some cases, I've missed TV shows because I watch something else in that time slot. In others, it is because the show originally ran when I was "too young". Most-recently it is because I'm tired of giving shows a chance only for them to quickly disappear, like ABC's "Eli Stone". The newest "old" show I've started watching is former FOX staple "That '70s Show". I started watching because reruns are on late weeknights here in Chicagoland AND seeing Kurtwood Smith (Red Foreman on "That '70s Show") on CBS' new com…

Woo hoo! I have another "medical procedure" in my future.... At the NMCOA Mini Meet in Stillman Valley IL, September 27, 2008, I didn't eat lunch and spent the entire late morning/early afternoon walking around and chatting. Late that afternoon, I suddenly had an excruciating pain right above my belly button; that area of my skin was tender and a "bump" of sorts was visible. I chalked it up to no lunch and too much walking around. So, I sat in my '87 MC LS/CL and grabbed a snack and a mint. The pain subsided within 15 minutes ... and I forgot about the incident. That is ... I forgot about it until Wednesday night, February 18. I had just finished watching "That …

Hey, I had this friend going back to the mid-90s. She's actually a licensed architect, but she is ROUGH around the edges...more of a construction trailer lady than an architect in an office. I only befriended her because we had work things in common..and our paths would have never crossed had it not been for that. Even though she is ROUGH, she is married, but her marriage is very screwed up from what I can see. It's like a roommate marriage. Here's the basic problem: when she heads for lower ground, I tend to straighten her out (if she asks me advice or tells about her ridiculous predicaments). That is, I told her to take her stupid licensing exam, to fight for t…

Alright, so after a week of back-and-forth e-mailing with the owner of a slightly older used car I found for sale on a Craigslist ad, I'm planning to go check it out sometime today (likely in the early afternoon). Since it has been a LONG time since I shopped for a used car, and even then is was for a newer used car, is there a standard checklist to take along so I don't overlook anything? It would be a bonus if it was from a "Used Car Shopping for Dummies with little Mechanical Skills" book. If I like what I see, I will be asking to take it for a much more thorough inspection by an AA-approved mechanic. But I want to be able to perform a basic inspection so the selle…

My friend just bought a dark grey 2006 4.0l v6 5-speed Mustang. The shift knob top rotates fairly freely. I was taking it for a little drive, and tried to shift from first to second without fully gripping the shifter - I just sort of put my hand on the top right side like I do in the Cobalt. This should work since you're pulling it down and left to go to 2nd. However, the knob rotated a full 180, and my hand slipped off the shifter. Nothing bad happened from this - I just thought I should relate what is wrong. He said he's taken it in to the dealer to ask about it, and they said it's supposed to rotate, to "accomodate different grip styles". It'…

*For NOS and BV's sake, we'll pretent Santa exists, they dont know any better* Its like a week and a half before Christmas, so people are finally getting around to Christmas shopping (at least my family anyways) and they're asking me what I want. And I dont have a frekaing clue. I'd kind of like to get my windows tinted and have keyless entry installed on my car, other than that my life is set and fully occupied. I dont really have the time to mess with things like an XBOX. Maybe I'll just end up getting $$$$.

I conquer all!!! Muahahaha!!! From rocks to overpasses to creeks to racetracks to valleys to coal loading buildings to tunnels to roads to cemetaries to hillsides to rocky downstreams to even nearby back roads overlooking Brookville... I can conquer it with my mighty Honda 300EX. Does any of these pics make you want to buy it? I bet they do, seeing what it can do. It's still mine though... Muahahahahahaha!!!!

I really don't like this design much at all, but this pic makes it look pretty good: I think yellow is really growing on me because of my Cobalt.

remember I am not a huge RWD fan but I thought this would be a fun discussion. What FWD cars now we reap the biggest sales and image benefits had the car been designed with RWD? The rule is the car would have the same powertrains (engine and tranny) as offered now. Styling would remain the same, inside and out. The only change is the drive wheels! You can even do a top 10 list if you like! GO PANTHER!

As some of you may or may not know, the 1988 album ...And Justice for All has pretty much no bass to it. Two of the most speculated theories are that the band was still broken up about the death of Cliff Burton two years earlier, so they toned the bass down to inaudible levels as a sign of respect for their dearly departed friend. The other theory is that the band was hazing Jason, the new bassist, and to show him that he could never fill Cliff's shoes, they shut him out from the mixing session and toned the bass down. The rest of the band's official explanation is that they wanted a "garage sound." They were pretty mean to Jason back then...sometimes he would come ba…

Hey everybody, Its getting to be time to start thinking about replacing my Grand Prix. I just got back from the Dodge dealership where I test drove a '12 Charger with the new 8 speed auto. I wish I could buy it, but by the time I add the options I want, I can no longer afford it. I guess this brings my search to the used car market. I really want a RWD vehicle, but other than the Charger, the only things I can think of are BMW's and Mercede's or other foreign vehicles. I am a little nervous about buying a BMW or Merc with 40-50k miles on it, because of repairs and general cost of keeping it running. I like the G8, on one hand, but on the other hand I just don't kn…

Here is the running order: 1st: Nissan Titan SE 2nd: Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited 3rd: Chevrolet Crew Cab LT2 4th: Ford F150 King Ranch 5th: Dodge Ram Laramie To see why the Nissan Titan was 1st, you just need to look at what they had to say about it. Here's what they said: I'm sold, how about you. A nice midpacker. On the Silverado, they said, "There's no complaint with the redesigned interiors....But once we settled into the supportive driver's seat, it was clear the cab wasn't noticeably roomier than the previous model's. They didn't like the transmission either. But they liked the way it drove; suspension and steering, towing abilities. Anyways, there's m…

I was looking at the pictures people are posting, sometimes with family members. The question of similarities and dissimilarities was brought up. I thought this would be an interesting topic. I put down "blended - more father" because when I went to upstate NY to meet part of my family on Dad's side, they had never seen me and we met at a mall to guide me back to the house in their subdivision with a bunch of cul-de-sacs, they picked me out and said "you look just like a (Dad's family surname)." But, then, a few features look like those on my Mom's brothers who, unfortunately, I can't stand! What about you? Which parent do you resemble more/most?

Another thread just reminded me of a really dumb question I got as part of a Popular Music elective. A listening question. They played a track from Metallica (can't remember which one, not a single). This is: a. The Rolling Stones b. Metallica c. Nirvana d. AC/DC That's probably the first time I've laughed out loud in an exam.

I was running errands and also popped into a Chevy dealership. They were refreshingly nice. I asked about 08s and there weren't too many on the lots. I then asked how much the extended warranty would be. Now, keeping in mind that the powertrain warranty is 5/100, the extended warranty for everything else to go 6/90 with a $100 deduct nudges $1,500 for a basic Impala 3.5 and $1,400 if you do the $200 deduct. Yikes...I was expecting $1,000 to $1,100. I bought the extended warranty for my Regal when there was basic 3/36. It was the 6/72 and it cost me about $ 700. What's the deal? I mean, the powertrain is now up to 5/100. Why so much for the balance? Is this…

I quit smoking. After trying the gum and having that fail miserably I went to my doctor and got a prescription for the stop smoking drug Chantix. It doesn't totally get rid of the cravings but it does make them more managable. After about 5 weeks I took myself off of it because I didn't like the side effects. I still fight with it everyday, but I won't cave in. I keep thinking of the money I am saving. This is the toughest thing I have done. For anyone out there trying to quit, good luck with it, I know how hard it is. Think of the money you'll save by quitting. I smoked a carton a week and her in VA a carton of the brand I smoked was $28. $28x4=$112. That's how much…

That's it, I'm done...... :AH-HA_wink: Yep, Actually found a Toyota that I liked....and the wife wants one pretty bad. I hear a replacement for the Cavvie Sedan (or the Cobalt, if it doesn't stop pissing me off..) I went the the local dealership, and test drove a 2009....... Vibe You can stop worrying now.... Anyways, this little car surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, as the last gen was so-so. The local dealership got their first 1.8 auto one in....a nice gray....My random comments: - Holy cow-this thing has a buttload of cuploaders! Add a keg, and you could have a party in there! The usual ones up front, ones that…

Its been a while seen Ive done this. I thought Id stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution So....after watching a few movies and seeing awesome cars and witnessing a few gems on the road as well....maybe its time to do this again. I saw Beverly Hills Cop II a while back and 2 of my all time faves are front and center in this movie. So....what would you pick? Axel Foley's deep undercover car in Detroit? 1986 Ferrari 308 GTS Or Axel''s deep, deep.....DEEP undercover car in Beverly Hills? 1968 Olds Cutlass S convertible

In owning the car a week now, I've made some observations 1) 1st Tank of Gas - 26MPG (545Km) 2) Electric Steering not ideal but suited better to the Deltas than Epsilons 3) Battery in the Trunk - Strange 4) Engine- More Muffled than the Cavalier 5) Torque Delivery a more anemic 6) Brakes are weak in comparison to the Cavalier 7) Yes, A lot of hard plastic but at 27K Miles, it doesn't rattle 8 ) Gauge Cluster... Strange to have to look to the far left for the Speedo and have the Tach my line of sight 9) Interior Build Quality better than Malibu Maxx, almost on par with Impala 10) Closing the door from the inside sounds/feels more tinny than the Epsilons…

As some of you know my Girl Friend (maybe wife soon i mean after 25 years of knowing each other pretty close, maybe its time) was in a car accident a little while ago. Good news she is almost back to normal the only thing is they need to watch for blood clots that could lead to a stroke. She still isn't aloud to go back to work until august 4th. She is bored out of her mind sitting at home and apparently when the caprice got stolen and we were looking at cars she really liked the Silverado. Today im at work and i get a call from my dad asking why Kim needed his GM discount number, i had no idea. well i get home and see a shinny new 2008 Silverado regular Cab long box chill…

What would be some nominations for 7 wonders of the automotive world? I'll compile a list from your nominations and we'll have an article about it. You don't need to nominate 7 in total, just something you think should be included on the list. Just picking your favorite cars isn't going to be enough. The vehicle should be historically significant and/or mark a departure in automotive design/technology. I'm going to try to include some from America, Asia, and Europe so we're not so heavily weighted. In any case, when explaining automobiles to some alien race, these 7 vehicles should tell a story about why they are the most important ones in automotive history.

North Carolina Transportation Museum -- Spencer Shops History of the N.C. Transportation Museum The N.C. Transportation Museum is located on the site of what was once Southern Railway Company's largest steam locomotive servicing facility. J.P. Morgan, Southern's owner, chose the site because of its location midway between the railroad's major terminal points of Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, Ga. Construction of the Shops began in 1896, and they were named in honor of the first president of Southern Railway, Samuel Spencer. During its peak, Spencer Shops employed nearly 3,000 people, which directly and indirectly provided most of the jobs for the towns of Spencer, E…
