In our backyard sits an 86 oldsmobile delta 88, for some reason a few years ago the motor went kaput. The car is pretty good condition, even the interior. Im gonna end up getting another 3.0 V6 for it, heard horrible things about the 3.8's reliability. Probably gonna get a motor from a junkyard and clean it up, even run some engine cleaner through it, but does anyone on here have some ideas on things i can do to enhance the performance?

Well, in a couple of hours I'll be heading off to France for the month of June. I'm going through my university's study abroad program; I'll be staying with a host family in Rennes and living a more cultured life for a few weeks. I probably won't have Internet over there, so hopefully I don't miss anything major.

I'm looking into a sun visor upgrade for my '99 Saturn SC2. I noticed today while junkyarding that '90's Grand Am's and some other '90's and early '00's GM cars seem to share the same 3-screw mounting design. I didn't get a chance to test and see if the visors really would swap, but they look the same, and I could easily believe that Saturn dipped into the parts pin for their visor hardware. So, what I'm hoping to find is that some model/trim level that uses this 3-screw mounting design (for the swivel end) came with sun visors that had the extension flap piece. I have it in my suburban, I've had it in buicks past, and would like that little slide out extension in th…

I eat breakfast every day, but during the week it's cold cereal, fruit, and juice. Once in a while on Sundays, I splurge and have a nice, big, hot breakfast. I just finished 4 eggo waffles, two eggs, and six pieces of bacon. Feelin' fat and happy! Does anyone else go all out for a weekend breakfast? What do you like to make?

Well, today I didn't have much going on and was going to drive out and see some tornado damage, but most of the roads were blocked off so I decided to go dealer hopping instead. The first place I went to was Willey Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Ames. They had 3 Fusions, 1 Milan, 1 Zephyr, 5 Mustangs (all V6s...I never saw any GT on the entire trip), 4 Montegos, 2 Five Hundreds, and 3 of the new '06 Grand Marquis. The CD3 trio looks great in person...after seeing all three, the Zephyr is now my favorite. It's funny because I used to not like the Zephyr, but seeing it in real life is a whole different story. There's so much brightwork that really makes it sta…

I was hungry so I cooked myself a decent Sunday Dinner: Glazed ham slice Leftover ham from Easter. I put a slice of it in a pan with a little water, honey, ground ginger and a dash of ground cloves. Cooked it down on medium high heat until the liquid was syrupy. Stuck it on a plate and poured the glaze over top. Baked Mac-N-Cheese Cooked some macaroni and set it aside. Mixed Velveeta, cream cheese, shredded sharp cheddar and milk with pimentos, paprika, cayenne pepper, a dash of garlic powder and a little flour to bind it together. Heated it until melted, poured it over the mac, topped it with bread crumbs mixed with melted butter and baked it. Steamed Asparagus…

1946 Chevrolet Suburban Carryall Motoring Memories: Chevrolet/GMC Suburban, 1935-2006 Story and photo by Bill Vance Ours is an evolving automotive world where fads and fancies, not to mention names and models, come and go. But through the years some vehicles, such the Model T Ford and the Volkswagen Beetle, did remain constant to their original calling. The T is gone of course, and Beetle production ended in Puebla, Mexico in July, 2003. The Volkswagen Beetle has even been reincarnated, albeit now with a front engine and front-wheel drive. Another model that has stayed the course is the truck-based all-steel Suburban (called the Suburban Carryall until 1973) sta…

Today was a beautiful day so I decided to take the LS out for a drive and stopped around at the local lots. I saw my first new Taurus, a couple '10 Mustangs, and the new Equinox. What really surprised me was the lot traffic. The Ford-Hyundai-BMW dealership was packed with people; there were at least 6 driving around in cars and another 4 or 5 walking the lot. Most people seemed to be checking out the Ford side, although there were a couple over in the Hyundai area. Then I went to the Lincoln-Mercury dealership and nobody was there. Drove down the street to the Chevrolet dealership and only a couple people...same with the Nissan one next door. Then I drove north to…

I'll be in the Harrisburg/Carlisle area that afternoon, meeting up with someone to sell a part. Is there anything going on that I can make the trip more than just driving down 3 hours, then turning around to drive back another 3 hours. I plan on being there around 6 pm. If nothing else, I'd be willing to meet up with someone in the area.

As my mom walked in the living room last night, she says "Cory, your dad blew my car up." I say "What?!" She tells me "I hope you don't plan on going anywhere tonight, as the Sunfire's blocking the driveway." I didn't really believe her at first, but upon looking out, there it is. It couldn't make it the last 40 feet or so to her spot in the driveway. All, night, I heard my parents talking about it. My mom asking my dad what's wrong with it... Him telling her that he doesnt know, etc, etc. I do go out last night, however, and had to cut through the yard. This morning, I let my mom take my Millenia. I was expecting to since last night, so I left my keys downstairs. She lef…

Not sure why, but I was struck today to grab the camera in the sunny heat and just take pictures of our car conglomeration. Too bad only a few were cleaned, and mine was covered (hah...prepping for the storm that hit soon after), but still interesting. Why? Especially now with gas prices, micro cars, etc., the whole driveway is still FULL of old GM boats, all daily drivers--with the one pretty new face of Malibu just standing out like the Suburban before it never did. Looks almost like land of the lost. First some overalls...and again, why I didn't do this before I put my car cover on, who knows.

Every once in a while, I get a rental car that is equipped with a sunroof. This happens when the MC is a 3.9 LT upgrade or a GP with the Supercharger (last year) and just this weekend in a Mercury Milan Premier. It was very nice driving the car around and seeing the stars through the glass sunroof. It was also nice having it open, sticking my hand up and catching the cool breezes off the coast. My biggest objection is that I hear they tend to leak. Also, if the power accessory fails, is that an expensive fix? Your experiences?

JUST KIDDING! Actually yesterday I witnessed a miracle. I went out in the morning and got some "Marvell's Mystery Oil" and two sets of spare keys made for the Super 88. When I came home there were some sun showers and then it got overcast. I was on the fence about weather or not to work on the car finally. After about 25 minutes I have the 2-4-6-8 valve cover off and I pour some of the Mystery Oil on #2 & 8 cylinders. Those two supposedly have no compression. I call my friend Kevin outside. (he was talking to Marcia inside) I had him crank the car with the valve cover off so I can see what's what. The #2/4/6/8 spark plugs have no wires, and as he c…

I spent 6 days in Las Vegas (106 to 108) every day. You walk out the door and it's like an oven. One day, walking around the strip with a friend, it started to rain from a thunderstorm. It was great. Followed by 2 days in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs)...same thing. I will say that the mountains shooting out of the desert floor is quite dramatic but that weather just knocks you out. Now, I went to grad school somewhere reasonably cold. I remember that as being painful and that driving in snow was kind of scary. However, most really hot places have a great other 9 months and you can stay in A/C for the remainder. Which could you handle better...living somewher…

I was chatting with a girl I went to school with on Facebook this morning. Last year, she and her husband were looking to replace their Hyundai Elantra. They had been disappointed with the fuel mileage after being fooled by the numbers on the sticker, so I spoke up and recommended the Chevrolet Sonic. They ended up buying an orange Sonic LTZ 1.4t hatch, with sunroof and a manual, after testing it out for themselves. I was telling her about my desire to research a possible replacement for my Patriot, and I asked her for an update on their Chevy. Her husband believes there is a leak in the heater core... I am not sure of the symptoms. The radio stays on sometimes af…

Who saw it? I did. Visually, not as appealing as X3 or Batman Begins. Plotwise, not as good as Batman but on-par with (or slightly better than) X3's. Acting, about asgood as the other two. I think it may have been a bit too long as well. Overall, I'd give it a B+. It would find a place in my DVD collection.

I'm a huge fan of local music and supporting it. Perhaps it's because I come from MoTown, The Motor City, etc and this state (metro-Detroit really) is so rich with hot music and promising bands that I can't help but appreciate the smaller (for now) guys. Obviously everybody knows how I feel about JoCaine & 75 North whom I feel will be mega stars before the end of' 06 if not before the end of summer '06. They've had their music featured on CSI and in several movies. Jocaine & 75 North But, there's also a band the "Paper Street Saints." These guys rip it too. They have a nice modern sound ala Nickleback especially with their latest song "A Fool TO Lie" which is c…

Reddit — if you actually stay awake and pay attention to what's what around the world wide web — is typically a festering rathole, good for hosting line after spewing line of junk data. As a website that idenitfies itself as the leading middle-man for quote-unquote "social news" it brings the concept of citizen journalism to an all-time record low, and any content of actual relevance and solidity seems to give Gawker and its network of bastard children CSPAN-like levels of credibility in outright comparison. It's a forum for the huddled and uninformed, unwashed masses of the world with a hi-speed internet connection to make a poor and weak-hearted attempt to be informed a…

I told you guys before, my neighbors have a Yaris. OK, the plan is this: tonight, under cover of darkness (and I'm going to dress in a black leotard and paint my face black to ensure I go undetected), I am going to SWITCH GAS TANKS between my truck and the tiny Yaris. What do you guys think? Huh? It's quite the brainstorm, eh? Instead of $90+ to fill my tank, it might take about, ohhh... $35. KaCHING! Instant savings at the pump! I just wonder how long it will take my neighbor to notice how much mor…

From both barrels for a double treat. Ugh. I blame having to fuss over my nose due to the drainage, the dry weather, and possible veins too close to the surface. I come home today to find this in my driveway: Yeah...not the Amber Bronze '07 Impala LS my mom took to work this morning. It's a rental while the Venture is in the shop getting some collision damage repaired. The original plan was for mom to borrow my grandad's car (the Impala) while the van was getting worked on, but mom said the smoke smell in the car (grandad's a heavy smoker) was bothering her, so she called the at-fault driver's insurance to see if a rental would be covered. Begrudgingly, mom was told she would be reimbursed, and she promptly called the local Enterprise to request a minivan. They were out of minivans, so she upgraded to an SUV. So, what we've g…

The Patels in the US, Hari and Sarla, aka Harry and Sally, were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Harry kissed Sally goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.' When asked about the inflation rate over the last year (survey was in 2009) the median student guessed 11%. Actual rate: much closer to 0%. Note, how important such misconceptions could be to policy. You don't have to be over ANY age to think this whole thing is amazing. Amazing. Even a 20 y.o. can understand that this lady, like Andrea Bocelli, has one of those "one in a hundred million" voices. I don't watch TV much. But a person in my office told was talking about what happened on "Britain's Got Talent," so I checked it out on YouTube. It was like David slinging at Goliath and winning! She's odd all right, but she's so damn comfortable in her own skin. And a voice that's in the stratosphere. I'm hoping she goes all the way. Have you been following this? Link to YouTube

Last Saturday for lunch I went and checked out a new sushi restaurant in town. I like my sushi spicy, so when I spotted a three-roll spicy combo on the menu, I knew what I wanted. Except... one of the rolls was octopus, and I am scared of octopus. Tuna and salmon are lovely though. I asked the lady if I could substitute an extra salmon roll for the octopus. She said, in a heavy accent, "no substitution". I reluctantly said "OK", and she went up to the bar and turned in my order. Two minutes later she came back to my table and said "sorry, we out of octopus, is OK two tuna roll?" WTF?

I'm looking for a new place to live and went to see a condo the other day. The landlord, Sanjay, has quite a nice place. The first problem was the price. His ad said $1249. When I got there, there was a surprise $150 home owners association fee. Almost every other place I've seen, the owner pays that fee. Sanjay wants to pass it on. Whatever, strike one. Now the BIG problem. He starts asking me if I'll be living there alone or will I be living with my "fiance or girlfriend." In the 10 mins or so I talk to him, he brings it up 3 times and always uses the words "fiance or girlfriend." The way he said it felt like he was fishing...basically to make sure I wasn't gay. Maybe…

Hmmm, I think it's finally time to add an SUV to the fleet..... Since I have 3 GM compacts, I'm thinking it would be nice to have a bigger truck to do the stuff that my cars cannot. Like taking a vacation with a toddler. Or trips to Lowe's/Sam's club/Home Depot and such. It's pretty much going to be an extra car, not daily driven (though not for long if my wife likes it) So, It needs to be dependible and cheap. I really don't want a car payment, though I would be okay with a small one for a little while. I've considered the cute ute's (Vue, Nox, Escape) Though I'm thinking more toward the larger Suvs. Solid trucks with no resale value. My likes so far. 98-01 Chevy Ta…

The Ford GT dies in 07 and little has been said about a replacment. Also Ford really has said little on performance models outside the Shelby. Will they farm them out to an outside companies to develope and save money? Much of the Ford GT was done by Roush and Salaeen.

On Wedensday a new CTS Sport (2007) came in, and I spent a good two hours getting her all ready to be put out on the lot. It looked sweet when I got done with it, and I have the pics to prove it In other news, I got to drive a new Tahoe to the gas station along with an SRX V6, CTS (not this one) which was a lot of fun, SRX V8 (loaner car), some other loaner cars that aren't worth mentioning, HHR, and just about an hour ago, an SSR! The SSR was definetly the coolest of the bunch, people were just staring at it the whole time.

I'm at this place near my grandma and grandpas that looks like a dealership lot with a house out front. Weird, but I'm checking out a bunch of these Camaros. Then I see a Solstice GXP in bluestone I think it is? Well the owner of the car walks up to me and says, "Hey, jump in my car. If I beat you to your house, you can keep my car along with yours. If you win, the Camaro's mine and you can keep the Solstice." So, I go for it.. A car that's about 550 lbs lighter and has at least 40 more hp and tq? Hell yeah. So I see him take a different route to my house (how does he know where I live?) and I jump through the redlight and go speeding down to a 4 lane road where I turn …

This is the Cavalier Z24 wagon that is around town, made by its owner, the parts manager at the local Honda dealership: Many moons ago, I told daves87rs I'd snap a pic for him. It kind of fell in my lap today.

I adore this car. I will always be an Oldsmobile man even if I'm driving Fords these days. The fact that GM built cars like this will always have me looking at what they have in their showrooms even though I've been broadening my car horizons recently.

The auction is right around the corner, so you're going to have to get registered quickly! It's a beautiful Porsche 904 (one of 106 built) and it's won races...back in the day. Wouldn't it make a great million dollar vintage racer? Is it on your list now? http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/2536

The silver car on the far left in the first pic is my car, go on down and lots of cool pics of old Fords in this thread. Oh, and BTW, if you look at the really hairy guy standing next to the blue and white 55 T-bird, with the little girl behind him...that's me with my daughter Christina in tow. Enjoy Chris

Today (Sunday the 13th) was a great day for car shows... the weather was awesome andthere was a "street rod" event at Canobie Lake Park, as well as the Endicott Estate car show where I showed my '59 Buick LeSabre last year, I actually it parked tailfin-to-tailfin with a '60 LeSabre 2dr hardtop. But I missed both of those shows... an a half dozen others. In fact, shockingly I was no where near a paved road. But it's all good because SpeedingPenguin, myself & a few buddies were up in thewoods of New Hampshire at (undisclosed location) "wasting" $200 worht of Ammo & eating $50 worth of BBQ'd hot dogs & cheeseburgers. It was quite an ecle…

So I bought a 12 pack of TaB several months ago because I've always been curious what it tasted like but they don't sell just 20 oz bottles or even 2 liters of the stuff. Tried one can. It tastes fine at first but then there's this...aftertaste...it's not pleasant. 11 cans have been sitting in the hall since then. Fast forward to tonight. I'm eating pizza and there's no more soda. Milk/OJ/Eggnog do not go with pizza for me. So I've broken down and openedup a (cold) can of TaB. Joy. This time the aftertaste isn't as bad to me though. Does anyone actually enjoy drinking it on a regular basis?

So the Tablet craze got me thinking, Ford has their whole Sync world with USB upgrades. GM has their version coming out MyLink, they have also their Android App to help you better interface with the VOLT. So with this in mind, what would it take to have an Auto maker decide to just have a 10" tablet holder in the center dash with a USB port. Just plug in your tablet and have say suction cups that hold it in place and boom. Up comes an interface allowing you to totally manage everything in your car. This way depending on how you interface to the world, via Apple, Windows, Linux, you have a nice to use interface and the abilityto customize it. I see this as reducing the c…

I have decided to keep my truck for the foreseeable future. It runs great and returns good mileage for what it is. So I'm looking into some mild pimping options. Today I ordered a grille for it, with a carbon-fiber-look frame and chrome factory-style mesh, along with a billet bowtie (which I may refuse, I think I prefer the factory gold one to match the one on the tailgate). I am also looking into ordering from Putco a set of chrome mirror caps, chrome door handles and tailgate handle. If I could find a set of chrome inside door handles, I'd order those... I will wait to see if GM puts them in any trim level of the '07s, as I may order OE. I have also priced a Leer …

What options does "your" (the one you consider mostly yours) vehicle have that you don't want/need? What would you add if you had the chance to? I'll use the Camaro for this... What I don't want/need on it: I really don't need a power driver's seat. Manual seats are particularly easy to use and easier to uninstall from the car. Another thing is a cigarrette lighter, but the ashtray is fine because that's where I store my cell phone. Some things that would've been sweet: AWD for sure. I've been thinking about it lately and damn would it be nice, especially in this snow. Automatic start just to warm the car up w/out going outside…

EPA estimated fuel economy: Infinity Zero emissions compliant With it going up to 65 today, I figured it'd be a good day to ride into work. It's about 7 miles each way from my front door to my workplace. I'm not the least bit tired, and it'll only get easier when I mount a set of road bike wheels, tires, and rear sprockets onto it. Best part is, I saved 1/16 of a tank and pushed back filling up the Cobalt till tomorrow. Want to do something about your gas bills? Use a bike for your short-distance errands (at least those that don't involve perishable foods).

I figured some of you may get a kick out of this... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=522557 Disclaimer: Getting in accidents is not cool/funny. What happened sucks and luckily everyone was alright. After I found out everyone was alright I just had to give a smile at the outcome of the two vehicles, though I'm sure the same would've happened had the sequoia been something else, like a tahoe or whatever and the driver remained the same. If you read through the thread you'll find out what happens...

...to figure out what to do next. No, not me; Mark Suppelsa, now former Fox 32 Chicago anchorman. This week, he turned down what is termed by the media a "lucrative" contract to continue as the main anchorman for Fox 32's 9p newscast. According to him during a visit Tuesday morning on WTMX's Erik and Kathy Show, it isn't about the money. Instead, he feels blessed to have the means and the time to take 3 months off [he has to wait 90 days before going back on the air, per his contract with Fox 32] to relax, enjoy his family ... and decide what he wants to do with his life. This news, and especially the interview Tuesday morning I heard on the radio en route to work,…

So, next week I am headed off to Denver for a few days. I'm leaving Tuesday night and am coming back on Sunday morning. A cousin of mine lives down there and since I have the week off from school, and don't have a ton of work to do on the farm, I thought I would take a few days and take a trip. I talked the girl I am kinda seeing into coming with me, and besides a trip down to Colorado Springs on Friday to visit a friend of our's, we have no idea what else we might be doing. So...any of you that have been to or live in the Denver area, what are some cool things to see while there? I'm driving down there in the Suburban, so it is going in for an oil change and a t…

Friday was my first day working at the Simoniz (Wash Depot inc.) car wash and detail center in Nashua NH, and boy, I've never seen so many dumb people in my life. For you to understand these first few stories, you have to be able to visualize how the car wash, or at least the track system, works. fairly self explanitory, the person drives their car up (with us guiding them) so the drivers side wheel is in the track between the guard rail, then when we hit the "program" button on the computer, one of the orange roller things pops up and pushes the car through the carwash. First, I cannot believe how many people wind up driving ON or OVER the guardrail thing. Not lik…

I LOVE to WRITE. I interned at a local newspaper "back in the day" and had many articles published. Recently, another article I wrote was published; this time, online. I've also added a bit more to my Route 66 story. AUTO ADS Last time here, I posted a thread with a bunch of older commercials that caught my attention: Then, Drew posted an article I wrote about commercials: ROUTE 66 After my September 2009 road trip along Route 66, I started writing a Route 66-based story. I finally added a new section in late February 2011, just as the host website was disbanded. So, the entire story is copied in here. Soon, my story may have a new home; details to be deter…

Well, they are in Las Vegas filming an episode on the Las Vegas "lifestyle." They were going to spend 30 minutes filming the Cadillac in and around Las Vegas, etc. SO....after weeks of talking with these folks, I showed up at the first location.....the "World Famous Little White Chapel" north of the Stri…

Background: Tamils are a distinct ethnic group within Sri Lanka (island nation south of India). There's been a civil war raging since 1983 between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebel movement. The Sri Lankan government is just now clearing out the last of the Tamil areas, and is nearing military victory. There is a huge Tamil population in Toronto, as many of them have left due to the conflict. Over the past couple of months there have been massive protests downtown with the goal of getting the Canadian government to help the Tamils. Depending on who you ask, they are freedom fighters opposing genocide of their people, or a terrorist organization. I real…
