My Acadia has the power tailgate, which I love for when I have three 150+ lbs dogs on leashes and need to load them into the back. Today, I was arranging boxes of stuff in the rear cargo area with the tailgate open. My daughter had the other set of keys and thought it would be funny to close the tailgate on dear old Dad. I was listening to my iPod at the time and did not hear the audible warning that the tailgate was closing. I only realized it was closing when I felt it hit by rear end, stop, and then raise back up. Thank goodness for that safety feature, or I would have been gobbled up like one of those little balls in a Hungry Hungry Hippos mouth. Let the prank …

On the sixth day God turned to the angel Gabriel and said "Today I am going to create a land called Canada. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty, it shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, beautifully sparkling lakes bountiful with carp and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, rivers stocked with salmon.." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in oil so to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, they shall be known as the most friendly people on the Earth." You'll laugh, you'll cry - you'll kiss 18 minutes goodbye! I've lived in the Houston area since I was in junior high (with a one year stint in Colorado a few years back) but I was born in Western New York. I still have family in the Buffalo area but I don't go up there very often. In November I drove up there to see my sister and her husband and decided to take the video camera along to capture some of the trip along the way. Unfortunately while I was there I somehow erased a ton of footage of the trip from Houston to Buffalo, as well as footage of Hurricane Ike ripping up my yard. I'm actually really bummed that that happened. This is footage of Niagara Fal…

In the comments section below an article about DaimlerChrysler paying a $40 million CAFE fine, there was this comment that was pretty interesting. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/31/nhtsa-r...ler-takes-cake/ Wasn't there a modified CAFE passed that allowed trucks more leniency than cars (down to 25 mpg)? If so, and Chevy really is at about 27 mpg for its car fleet, that's a lot better than I was thinking. Trucks have a way to go, however. It's also interesting to note how big of a difference the Prius makes on Toyota's lineup; I think CAFE can be done, but no doubt GM needs more hybrid / electric vehicles on the road. I don't see why size needs to be sacrific…

Today, after months of letting the breeze outside in the street, my dad finally took it for brakes. The light was on, and the pedal went to the floor. I had been telling him for months to take it in, not good to let it rot. And now, we have to pay $450 because the back brake system is a mess and the front needs new pads. O how right I was and he didn't listen.

1: DIGITAL DEATH MANAGER "Life-logging" will be a way of life, affecting how we record and remember what we do. Young sees a role for someone who can take the mass of life-logged material, and make stories out of it. That could be useful during our lives (for personal-brand purposes) but also in death. "Today, it happens only with important people. Andy Warhol has a foundation, and so on. We're imagining this is going to ladder down to other people who want to shape what their legacy means," Young says. 2: UN-SCHOOLING COUNSELOR The concept of education as a four-year box-ticking exercise will be over. The future will be more diverse. People will plug in a year of educ…

Woman finds 'stolen' Audi in neighbor's garage 6 hours ago BERLIN — An Audi sedan written off by an elderly German woman as stolen two years ago has resurfaced — in her neighbor's garage beneath a thick layer of dust. Police said Thursday the 82-year-old from the northern city of Hildesheim took the car in for repairs two years ago and had the mechanics drive it back to her house and park it in her garage. She got the keys and papers from her mailbox, but when she went to get the car it was nowhere to be found. So she reported it stolen. Fast forward to Wednesday when her neighbor went to clean up his unused garage so it could be rented. He found the car under "a …

Basically, he wants a $50 dollar checque, and a written entry not to exceed 100 words on the theme of “I/We want to win this Saab because..”. After 100 entries, a winner will be picked, and get the car. Easy $5000 bucks for the guy, possibly a $50 dollar SAAB for you. http://www.bmts.com/~warren/ http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-c...QQAdIdZ45525269 Crazy, eh?

As you've most likely heard, the Prez is presenting a deal to have the government of the United Arab Emirates take control of major ports on the east coast. Do you think that Dubya has finally "lost" it? I can't believe this is actually happening. He even said....and I quote...."if Britain can operate our ports, how are they different from the U.A.E.?" How can you compare Great Britain to ANY middle-eastern country? In my opinion, G.B. is as close to sainthood as you can get when talking about U.S. allies.... I don't intend to get into a huge political debate here.....but IMHO, to give ANY middle-eastern country access to major ports in the U.S. is taking a c…

Well, first of all. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I have much to be thankful for on this day. Last night we had a close call with my grandmother. There are a lot of details that I would rather not get into here, but luckily she is still with us. For that reason, I have everything to be thankful for this day. This may seem trivial considering it all, but last night on the way back from the hospital in Grand Forks, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a little bit of nature. A (4x5 buck) and my Suburban had a little run in. Instinctively I applied the brakes when I saw him coming out of the ditch, had I not, I might have whizzed right by him. Anyway, I can't do much …

Chalk up another idiosyncrasis! For those of you who watch "Friday Night Lights", I'd bet I'm not the only one that noticed this.... On this past week's episode, one of the character's cars, a '75-'76 vintage Caprice/Impala wagon [believe it was the Caprice version; thought I saw the Caprice emblem on the front], was referred to as/called a "GMC wagon". In the same episode, when two of the characters torched the car, it suddenly went from being the big/roundish '75-'76 vintage Caprice/Impala wagon to the downsized/boxy '77-'79 vintage Caprice/Impala wagon. At least it was still a wagon, I suppose. And, unless my memory and fact-finding is lacking, GM never produced a…

We then got into a very long, intense conversation about playing chicken on heavy machinery. Anyways, I came across this warning sticker on Crown's website. Avoid being crushed, good advice even when you're not talking about a forklift.

A man killed Wednesday while apparently involved in a street race in Hercules was a San Francisco sheriff's deputy, a sheriff's department spokeswoman said. Christopher Walker, 23, of Antioch, had worked at the department for two years, most recently providing security at San Francisco General Hospital, according to spokeswoman Eileen Hirst. Before that, he worked at the San Francisco County Jail. According to Hercules police, Walker was racing a red Chevrolet Camaro against another car when he crashed into a light pole on Palm Avenue, between Sycamore Avenue and the state Highway 4 on-ramp, at about 2:30 p.m. The other car, which left the scene of the crash, was d…

We didn't have a reunion party last year, but one is in the works for this year. Anyway, as a member of the site, you get a "guestbook", a place for people to sign in and say "hi". This morning I got an email, someone signed in a greeting. When I saw the name I was a bit surprised, it was from a kid who was heavy in earlier grades. By the time we graduated, he was a buff, goodlooking guy, a hit with the ladies. I didn't think he knew I existed at the time, but it was nice of him to remember…

Let me set the scene for you a bit.... We (My girlfriend and I) live in the mountains of NC when we're not at school; it's very rural. In fact, we actually live up on a mountain that overlooks a valley, while on the back side of us is a national forest, water reservoir and black bear habitat. My neighborhood is basically built in a network of old logging roads (which were cut in when our mountain still housed mica mines) one of which has been widened and paved up to my cluster of 7 houses where the road (meaning paved part) dead ends. My family and I live in one house and my grilfriend and her family have been our next door neighbors for years. (Way before we were an "it…

My cousin turned his truck on its side just before easter. The night before, actually. This was my Grandpa's, as well, before he sold it to my cousin last fall. It had 20k some miles before he did. Fun picture of it, the Cobalt, and my Grand Am from '05.

http://www.aliceinchains.com/home.html#/home Only one song is available to listen to right now, but I like what I hear. I wasn't quite sure at first with the new vocalist, but after hearing him I think he's a good fit to follow in the footsteps of the late Layne Staley. The album Black Gives Way to Blue will be released September 28.

It seems as if I will be making it switch on over to T-Mo. Sprint has told me that my job is safe, but during my search I've come across this, which is a position I do not see myself passing up.

* Name the last time you saw a Cosworth Vega! http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/24/wednesday-wrap-23/ Which do you prefer: Dodge or Ford? http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/25/thursday-survey-23/ On personal notes, I have battled heart-related issues since I was born: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/24/daily-dose-wake-up-wed-23/ & now enduring issues which hope to make this true: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/06/25/daily-dose-theory-thu-23/ But, perhaps perspective is an odd thing? In some ways, feel like my best days [via road trips 2002-2011 & events-gatherings, at least 2 of which I am missing this weekend] are ov…

I know we have some dealer-linked people here so maybe I can be helped out. My dad wants a 2013 Avalanche LTZ. We live in Canada, and therefore, the pricing is terrible. So we're looking cross-border to save ~20 grand. We've contacted some dealers already but none will play ball because we're Canadian. Even when we say that one of our Amerifriend's can do the purchase, the dealers still clam up. My dad has procrastinated on the purchase, stock is dwindling, and his list of preferences is fairly specific. I'm posting this to see if there's someone here who wants to make a sale. Or potentially help us arrange one. Do Want 4WD White Diamond tri-coat exterior Ebony …

This financial product helped me buy my current car. I loved the "top off," which meant"rounding up." It gave me an extra $700+ when I bought the last car. They recently ran another "top off." QUESTION(S): How is this financial product managed? I know the bookkeeping for each cardholder's account is separate, but are they managed separately like a trust ... or are they pooled? I know they couldn't manage an individual cardholder's account, as in spending time doing that, but maybe they might manage them in tiers (accounts with similar amount in benefits, economic cycles, spending habits, goings-on and trends at GM, etc.) From what I recall, the usual tak…

http://www.gizmag.com/go/6245/ October 1, 2006 Researchers at the ETH Chair for Power Electronics have developed an electrical generator that spins at a world record 500,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and scientists are hopeful they can achieve twice this speed to touch the magical million rpm. The matchbox-sized motor generates the equivalent of 100 watts, including the power electronics interface, and has an efficiency of close to 95 percent. Powered by a gas turbine, one tankful of fuel drives the generator for about 10 hours at peak 100 watt performance. These ultra small gas turbines could replace conventional batteries as a mobile power source and have a range …

I'm running Windows XP, and use Apple Itunes as my default media player. Unfortunately, when importing music, I chose the MPEG-4 format as my default setting...The thing is, the MPEG-4 format isn't compatible with any other media player...Anyone have any ideas on how to covert my music files, currently in the MPEG-4 format, to industry standard WAV, or MP3, format?

So... how bad's your hangover? ...Or in other words, how was your night? I started the night off lonely... at my grandparents. My parents and my brother went somewhere else. Eventually, people came, and the party began. Started with Smirnoffs... surprised? Played some cad... lost. Then came new years... 3... 2... 1... Downed a small bottle of Whiskey. That later turned out to be a huge mistake as that stuff is pretty potent. After that more people came and we played more cad as well as a game of quarters (CLR, I think? Left, center, right...?). Won my money back. Drank more Smirnoffs inbetween glasses of water. Then it was just straight partying until I started…
