Bought the '11 Jeep Liberty i think it'll be 2 years in Feb. It just turned 75K, has had zero issues. Its not fancy but everyone here enjoys driving it. Right now my older son is using it, he lives about 50 mins north of me & comes down to work w/ me during most weeks. My younger son is about 2 hrs north of me, in school in NYState. He lives on campus, but will be interning nxt semester & will need wheels. We have not shopped yet & need to get on the ball. Have not set a budget, thinking recent CPO, small, efficient, AWD would likely be good where he is (the Hudson Valley is very hilly country). I prefer to buy from a U.S. brand only. I welcome sugge…

Over the last week, I've looked at a number of cars as a potential "winter beater" or "winter beater/road warrior"...3 of those on Saturday, November 8. I tend to come across either FWD coupes or RWD sedans. I'd prefer a RWD coupe.... '78 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $3500 ...nice car, orange in color with tan vinyl top, but too good of condition to use as a winter beater, imo. ...not too keen on vinyl tops ... or the vinyl seats it had ... or it being a sedan. ...Possible name = Orange Flame '89 Caprice Classic sedan ...asking $2500 ...nice car on the outside; 2-tone blue. ...appeared to have some leaks into the interior and, when I drove it, the h…

So he's decided to cash in the Nissan Quest his family has for a new car. Budget is $20-25k. Must get close to 30 mpg city. Doesn't want a Toyota, not sure about Honda. He's eying a Mini...not a bad choice at all. Any other thoughts?

this falls under another episode of your friends car shopping and asking your advice but never really wanting to hear what you say. and again, no big deal. so, my buddy who has a honda pilot and a chevy malibu (work fleet car given to him, he sold his passat) is looking to replace their pilot after extending the lease several times. the two vehicles they have settled on....another Pilot (UGH!) or a Hyundai Santa Fe. I have him talked out of a Santa Fe. THANKFULLY. The Pilot they want because they like the way Honda has treated them. I understand that. Problem is, the new lease terms for essentially the same vehicle are WAYYYY more now in the new economy. Higher i…

Alright, well so far we've looked at 3 cars, and will be looking at a 4th tomorrow. So here's some quick stories about the three. Also, besides the Intrepid, these are photos of the actual cars. #1: 2002 Dodge Neon I saw an add for a `02 Dodge Neon. There were two photos of it. The driver's side was banged up, but he said it ran good. Cosmetics didn't bother me because parts are easy to find (I saw 2 of them at the junkyard I went to last week). Yesterday we went to take a look at it, since it was nearby. The guy's English sucks but whatever, he seemed nice enough. I walked around the car, and saw it had seen better days. Driver's doors, fender, hood, and bumper…

So my aunt came over for Christmas as always, but she wasn't sure she was going to make it on Christmas Eve, as her Subaru Outback wouldn't start, but finally turned over after an hour's delay. She drove it here and it made it, and then it started fine on Christmas and the day after, when we took it to the dealer's service department. While it was in service being looked at, we went out looking. First up was the CR-V. For some reason she thinks their cute, and I guess we all have our own opinions. She thought it was what she really wanted, and had high hopes. She picked out one she liked (sticker was $28.5k) and we were on our way. We both thought it was terrible. Harsh…

Hello everyone! I have been very busy with life lately so I haven't been posting as much as I would have liked to lately. Anyways I was talking to some people in my family and we got talking about what the next ride could would be. Some backgroud information... My brother and his wife will be in the market for a new car soon (before the end of this year) more than likely and have two very different options to select from. They recently became empty nesters and now have the freedom to really drive whatever they would like. My brother who is interested in cars, (not crazy like me) wants something with some serious "balls" as he would put it. That is his first thing on his…

Well everyone around C&G knows I have thinking about another pre-owned GM car, I started thinking late 90's N/A Bonneville SSE, 02-04 Seville, 00-02 Firebird, then went onto 06-07 Monte Carlo's and now I have come full circle to the Cobalt/G5 and Aveo5/G3. For all the folks wanting to drop cheap shots at this boring FWD 4 cylinder economy cars, don't post! If you have a positive or constructive comments please post. I am really considering a new small GM car due to the tax write-off (a good idea from the White House) and want to help GM out again. I have been really considering the Aveo5/G3 (09 models only) and was wondering if I have gone crazy, going from a large ca…

Hello all this is Chris, gm4lifes (John) son Chris. I went car shopping with my dads brother because my father was busy. Every year it happens the family gathers for Christmas and this year my uncle asked me for some help car shopping. He knows I enjoy my cars and know alot about them so we set a date. Went and got a price on a Camry first and then drove it, didn't like it, then got in an Accord didn't like it. He came to his favorite the new 2008 Malibu LTZ V6 and loved it, and got the price of 25,100.00 after all rebates and was satisfied until the he said what about an Impala. I had orginally asked my uncle to consider one but didn't. He started number crunching the …

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A 79-year old driver plowed into a store in Fitchburg on Monday afternoon. The elderly woman not only accelerated into the building, but she drove over two curbs before crashing right through the storefront window. Firefighters pulled the woman out of her car and away from a sheet of broken glass that was hanging just inches from her head. Fortunately, she was able to walk away. “My first reaction...how did she do that,” said Simone Shoruy, who filmed the accident scene. Shoruy immediately rushed to the scene. “It looked like she was parking. She opened her door and before she even got out or anything, the door shut and she just accelerated into …

I got a Southwest "wanna get away" moment to kick things off... I'm over by the bank, in the car, analyzing this 79 Cutlass Supreme and a 70s El Camino parked head-to-head. Cutty was quite clean, but for the slightly smashed-in-from-the-bottom grille, and the ElCo was pretty oxidized, but looked straight. OK, here's the rundown. El Co backs out to leave, while right next to the Cutty, this idiot comes in some bulls--t Yukon XL Denali at a painfully obvious bad angle (never mind that the poor older lady is putting her groceries in the trunk, and that he had five spaces to choose from, but chooses to pull right next to her). Whole lot looking right at this guy, inclu…

Kinda appropriate to call it a countdown since 24 premiered in syndication this weekend across America. In any case, all I really remember is a nice lowered Intrepid on fins, a 90s Cutlass Supreme sedan on some sort of big dubs (yes, both cars looked quite nice), and a advertising shrink wrap equipped Pacifica (from far away, I thought it was an SRX)

Sure, I have a computer and a phone. But I also always get a calendar from my GM dealer. And what a beautiful sight in terms of classic cars on it for the month of June. Voila: Come to think of it, for once, the Buick was the best looking of the Malibu-LeMans-Cutlass-Skylark fraternal quadruplets. The front and rear were clean and interesting enough. The side profile had nothing garish about it, including when closed up with a hardtop. And the dash had tasteful square bezels with small rounded corners. It came with quite a few engines. There were definitely 350s and 455s, but I learned that the 250 c.i. 6 was also available (read the fine …

I saw a green and white Prius taxi today in traffic..I googled and found this article: From the Denver Business Journal: ---Metro Taxi doubled its fleet of hybrid vehicles on Denver streets Monday, bringing the total to 10. The addition of the five new Toyota Hybrid Prius is in keeping with a pledge Metro Taxi made in late May to replace all 500 vehicles in its fleet with hybrids. Metro Taxi said replacing one of its taxis with a Prius is equal to converting five non-commercial vehicles to hybrids. The company estimates converting its entire fleet will save 3 million gallons of gas a year.

Haven't checked in for a while, and due to various commitments this year, we didn't really take a "vacation" in the normal sense. As if we don't have enough media bias to contend with... I usually listen to NPR (National Public Radio) on Saturdays, and sometimes I tune in to "Car Talk", a very slightly humorous show where people call in with their car problems and these two goofs, "The Tappet Brothers", try to diagnose them. They also use "humor" to convey some serious information and try to shape opinion. I was incensed yesterday to hear one of them mention some emails they received after a listener bragged on his "350,000 mile Lexus". They said they were sure there were no domestic cars that could go that long. One of the responses was from a listener with a '68 Buick Sportwagon with over 700,…

* After my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery, I drove for the first time, 12/15/2011. I had a rush of excitement when I pulled my 1979 Caprice Classic out of the garage, where it had been with my 5 MCs. As I drove down the road, my thoughts turned to other cars, particularly ones I'd love to purchase... ...mid-late 1970s LTD/Thunderbird ...1975 Caprice Classic convertible ...1976 Caprice Classic sedan ...1989 Caprice Classic sedan ...1987 MC SS Aerocoupe ...2011 Dodge Charger ...& too many others.... Then, during that same drive, I wondered what it'd be like to have KITT, KARR, Herbie, the General Lee, Jim Rockford's Pontiac, Starsky & Hutch's Torino, &…

Ok, I thought about this after my last vacation. I had Grand Prixs back to back in both FL and Atlanta, putting 1,700 miles on the first and 600 on the second one. (I took the Florida car to beautiful Pensacola and back). I've also rented about 10 other Grand Prixs, putting at least 700 miles on each one. When added up, it occurred to me I've exceeded 10,000 miles in rented Grand Prixs. Heck, getting into one and knowing all about them is so reflexive, that if I were to buy one it would be a "non-event." What types of rental "sleds" do you seem to get into most often?

The "Worst Case Scenario" thread brought back a memory of a TV show that I thought you might all be interested in. FOG was mentioning that it shouldn't be hard to retrofit cars to run on hydrogen. Turns out he's right, as long as the car is carburetted. The show Mythbusters was testing methods of saving fuel. You've all seen the crappy infomercials, so they were testing if any of these products were actually worth money. To test, they had an early 90's Accord, representing fuel injected cars, and a late 70s Oldsmobile Omega, representing carburetted cars. They tried all the fuel saving methods on both cars, and they all failed, some even made the mileage worse. Then the…

There is one vehicle missing and that is a '87 K-Car that I bought in 2000 for $300 from a customer (it only had 50,000 miles on it and it was absolutely pristine), spent $500 getting it 'safetied,' but it was rear-ended 3 months later by a chick in an Audi (the Audi had to be towed; I drove the K-car for another week before the adjuster came to 'write it off:' he gave me $2k for it!) So tonight I was walking back to my apartment/dorm with my friends and we were all drunk, and while we were walking I noticed how much better cars look when you're drunk. First, a '95 or so Camaro, which looked really low and sleek. I was like "holy $h! that Camaro looks awesome," then we went past a G6 coupe that looked freaking amazing. It looked like it was some super-sleek concept car or something. Yeah, that's my rant for the night. I'm still "under the influence" right now, but I'm basically sober.

Ever see a certain car and flash-back to vivid memories...maybe good or bad? 1978-80 Grand Prix: My "real" dad and his second wife had a 1978 GP....all I remember is sticky vinyl seats in the hot Florida sun. - My first car was a 1979 GP, which was a hand-me-down from Mom....bought new. Lots of childhood memories and later, beginner driver memories formed there. Had my first car wreck in it. Learned how to do burnouts and slide sideways in it. Insane, youthful, indestructible feelings. - My great Grandma had a base 1980 GP. Lots of memories of going places with her when I was a kid. Lots of trips through the Jack-in-the Box drive-thru. - So when …

Best modern design in cars: I like the new Audi TT, the C30 Volvo, the Cadillac CTS, and a few other really modern cars...which New cars do you think have the best "modern" car styling. As far as exotics, I really like the direction Ferrari is taking also... Your thoughts?

For me: Love vintage Mustangs...but the last Mustangs I would really want to own left Ford in the summer of 1970 when they re-tooled for the '71 models. Really dislike fix body Mustangs anymore... Also dislike the Japanese "supercars" of the early 1990's...Supra, FD RX-7, 3000GT Mitsu, 300ZX, et al. But I do like the NSX. Almost anything Lincoln between thbe 60's suicide door cars and the current models. Like the Suicide door cars and the latest and greatest...but the Town Cars, 70's Lincolns...ughhh....yuck... So what do you dislike? Chris

I figure there are many cars that we all can agree on or at least personally feel never got the chance to live, that were cancelled when they were nice and could of been reconfigured rather than discarded. Of course, it's easy to say "Oh, bring back X and call it a day", I'm gonna up the ante a bit and ask what should be done, and to start, gonna bring in the American Roadsters from our favorite General: The Kappa twins themselves! Now, I understand the platform costed them $$$, and it wasn't exactly a Miata slayer, but I feel like now, people are starting to notice them again and they did have potential, whether it'd be en…

Cars that sold poorly, but you still see everywhere There are some models out there, like the GMC Envoy XUV shown above, that have a reputation for selling very poorly. Yet in some cases, these poor selling vehicles seem to pop surprisingly frequently. The Envoy XUV sold just over 12,000 copies during it's abbreviated lifetime yet I see them all over my area. Within a mile of my house, there are not one, but two families with two of the poor selling, popular to bash, Pontiac Aztecs sitting in each driveway. Our local Isuzu dealer did a good job clearing out the remaining I-series pickups because there is a huge amount of them running around lately. So what do you se…

BMW Z4-don't like it as much as the Z3, but it is growing on me. Chrysler 300-picking my daughter up from her high school, I saw one black on blavk with 22" wheels and a tint, tastefully done...looked kind of badass...I could rock that in an alternative universe...and yeah it had a Hemi. Charger-I know a lot of people here don't like them, and the rear roof line makes the back seat hard to use...but done up in the Chryco heritage colors, with a Hemi and an after market exhaust....hmmm Genesis coupe-Selling well around here, as we said before should give the Japanese a run for the $ The new Sonata-Neighbore traded his Porsche Cayene (the Porsche SUV, or whatever it's …

So that we're not flooded with a bunch of supercars that even William and I haven't been able to drive, lets try to keep it to makes/models that are accessible to most of the population: What car have you always wanted to drive, even as just an extended test drive, but have never had the chance? I mentioned one in the "Cars from your soul year?" thread, the Mazda RX7 I've also never been behind the wheel of an old Air-Cooled Beetle.... and while not fast, I still think it would be neat. I also would want to "return to my roots" and drive one of the old Old 350 Diesel power GM cars on a long drive.... just to experience it.

It was mentioned in an earlier thread that the existence of cars with more than 300'000 Miles (esp. American Ones) should be documented to prove their existence... Have you personally come across any or seen any in your perusals of the internet?? I just found these today: 1996 Saab 900 with 1.4 Million KM http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detaili...gno=2&srt=1 2003 Saturn ION with almost 770K Km http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detaili...gno=1&srt=1 2003 Chevrolet Malibu w. 800K Km http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detaili...gno=1&srt=1 Have any of you come in contact with cars that have this kind of mileage?

So I saw an ad for a Fiat 500L Urbana Edition the other day and while I can say it is not my cup of tea at all, it got me thinking about cars I do like that I am at least a little bit ashamed to admit to. I thought it might be a fun and interesting topic. To keep it timely, lets say it has to be a vehicle that was produced within the last 5 years. It does not have to be sold in the U.S. market for you to post it. Here are a few of mine: Fiat 500X Trekking This is the one I was thinking of when I thought of this topic. I'm not sure why and I can't explain it, but I actually like these little buggers. I'm ashamed to admit I actually like it better than its J…

The rules of this thread...we need to name as many cars that we personally are crazy about that no one else at C and G is wild about. people may like them okay or hate them... but we need to find as many cars, oddball or not, that we are the only people who are nuts about them. Here is my list- I love the 1953 Ford, last of the Flatheads, and even paced the Indy 500 that year. I've ALWAYS wanted one of these since I was a kid, but have never had the chance to own one... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inventory_show.asp?stknum=3334 71-72 Ford LTD ragtop...I think Moltie likes these, but he and I are probably the only ones... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inv…

In the first few days of the month, I went to get some strawberries on the cheap and saw this in the parking lot ... ... early '90s Ford Tempo coupe in "LL Bean / Eddie Bauer colors" that were popular for cars in that decade ... plastic manual window cranks ... it was nighttime.

There were cars I used to see tons of when I was a kid, many of which have basically disappeared. Plenty of cars have been noted in my Car Spotting posts that I had missed for a good while, but there are sadly some that are pretty much gone forever. I mean, I can't remember the last time I've seen a: -Dodge Polara -77 Chrysler New Yorker like my grandpa had -B- or C-body Chrysler wagon -Fury or Coronet like the cops used to drive. -early 70s Charger or Satellite (it's like Chryslers just die off or something) -Oldsmobile Firenza (H or J-body) -pre-80 Buick Estate Wagon -first-gen Celica fastback -Audi Fox -first-gen Audi 4000 -Audi GT Coupe -some of those we…

Cars You'd Like To Own...

To start, this is probably a "been there, done that" thread, but I really don't much care. The question is simple: What car do you forsee or would like to see in your future, new or used. And what might come -- such as the up and coming Camaro -- does not count. It must already be setting on a car lot somewhere. Here's what I'm seeing in or considering to make a part of my future (which more than likely translates to late summer or late fall). 1998 Chevrolet Camaro with about 70,000 to 90,000 miles for around $6,000 to $9,000, Black or Silver. Or... 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado for $2,500 to $8,500, "High Toned Son of a Bitch", Black Only And I won't rule out... 19…

Be it fond memories or helping your dad keep the hunk of junk running, what cars/trucks do you remember mostly from your youth that your parents owned? I remember my dad's 84 Sierra Classic, 76 Ford Maverick coupe, 89 Chevy S-10 Blazer and my mom's 75 Ford Maverick Sedan. EDIT: We also had an 85? Oldsmobile Cutlass, but I remember me and my brother bitching about having to close the big doors. Other than that it was a great car and my mom loved it.

A little history leason on me, I have a son freshman in college living at home to save money. (It is smart and works for our family.) I have a daughter yet in highschool as a soph she will turn 16 in March. Of course the car-debate will arise, I have bought 3 cars in the past 7 years very unlike me I do buy in spurts, but I think I am stuck getting another one for her or my son. That is a fact I guess, but what to get. My wife said get a Sunfire or Cobalt, I would rather get something larger and older for the same or less money. My son is a Pontiac guy at heart but likes Chevy too. I don't want another Impala from the same generation or a Bonneville. My son likes the 1996…

Casey Mears won NASCAR's longest race, the Coca-Cola 600, last night using fuel milage to beat out the top contenders. A long green flag run at the end of the race saw the expected front runners have to pit for fuel while Mears stayed out and held on over the final 8 laps to win. This race marks Chevy's 11th win out of the 12 races so far. Casey Mears' car owner Rick Hendrick has seen his teams win 9 of those. Now all four of Hendrick Motorsports teams have a victory this year. The highest finishing Dodge was Kyle Petty in 3rd The highest finishing Ford was Ricky Rudd in 7th The highest finishing Toyota was Brian Vickers in 5th 1. 25 Casey Mears Chevrolet National …

They are crushing the cars COMPLETE in this video, and it pains me to see a 95 or 96 GMC 2-door fullsize Yukon in line to die just like the very nice COMPLETE Dodge Durango you see die at the end. What a waste of useable parts. Now more energy has to be used to create the replacement parts that are being needlessly wasted in this video...sad.

So I was driving home from work last week, when my Yukon started making a thumping noise. At first I thought it was just a bent rim or something, but I would have only been so lucky. After checking out all the wheels and taking it for another drive, I noticed that it only happened under power. After talking to a few people and having them take a look it, we thought it might be the U joint. It looked worn, but after replacing that the sound was still coming from somewhere else. It sounded like it was coming from the rear end. We took a look in the rear end, and this is what we found laying on the bottom.... We decided that this wasn't something that could be do…

Being the "Resident Young Stickler" that I am ... I find it fascinating when I spot ads for cars that advertise for one year of car, but show a completely different year of the same car. Case in point: 1976 Des Moines Register ad Check out this, that a friend on the El Camino list posted: http://www.myelcamino.net/1976.htm ...and scroll down a little bit to the "Clean Sweep" ad. You see that " '76 Monte Carlo " they have pictured there? Well, I don't think it is; sure looks like a '75. But ... you be the judge and compare.... '75 MC rear (scroll down to bottom): http://www.chevyasylum.com/mcspotter/1975f.html '76 MC rear (scroll down to bottom): http://www.che…

It was brought up in the Fourm Feedback thread. Is it possible to use cruise control in reverse? I think it could work. Ill have to try it out sometime. (in safe conditions) in a ford Aerostar. you can accelerate from a dead stop with cruise. so why wouldnt it work in Reverse. But my idle speed is like cruise in the morning have to ride the brakes on Masonic Blv. to keep it at 30. And no I dont have the Choke.

Cell phone ban urged for teen drivers Transportation officials say phone use and inexperience on road do not mix when it comes to teens. September 21, 2005: 7:02 AM EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Banning teenagers from using cell phones or other wireless devices while learning to drive should be a national auto safety priority, say U.S. transportation safety officials. The National Transportation Safety Board put the proposed restriction on its "most wanted" list of safety improvements for the upcoming year, which also includes older appeals for more states to impose limits on teens' night driving and carrying of passengers. "Learning to drive and being …

It seems that since cell phones have taken off, driving has gotten worse. Last weekend alone, the same chick in a SUV almost nailed me as we were both turning into the curb cut for the Starbucks parking lot AND as she was maneuvering for a parking spot. I look for clarification. She was straddling the cell phone with her shoulder, yapping away. I honestly wonder what could be so important that people are on their cell phones in their cars constantly. At any rate, most close calls have involved others' cell phone use, it seems. I prefer to use a land line. If I decide to have a conversation on a cell while in an automobile, I pull over. I will talk on a cell ph…
