and you see something that just blows your mind? I got the chance to take a 5 door Astra XE for a test drive today. (And it was quite fun to drive, I must say) First off, they had to put the ugliest wheel covers on the XE.....like ever. And they charge 960 bucks for A/C, 1300 bucks for a auto trans.... Then I look at an XR, only to find-for like 500 bucks more, you get a bunch more (alm wheels, a/c, better radio, steeing wheel controls..) What the heck? What is the point of the XE? Unless you don't want A/C......... Crazy stuff I tell you....

Yeah, so I think I'm ready to get myself an MP3 player (or get it as a present :AH-HA_wink: ). Getting tired of the compact disc thing. I want video capability and a decent-sized amount of storage. The three I'm seriously considering are the... -Creative Zen Vision: M -Video iPod (30 GB) -Microsoft Zune Currently, the Zen is winning me over with longer battery life, more colorful a screen, more features and greater format compatibility than the iPod. The iPod is the sleekest-looking and has the "cache" (it doesn't change the fact that it's inferior spec-wise compared to the Zen). I know next to nothing really about the Zune. I'm going shopping with frien…

Just about six months ago I fell in love with a tripple Brown Buick. It was a 455 powered BiCentenial LeSabre four door hardtop. The car was on craigslist for $1300 O.B.O. Today while looking through my 47 gigs of car photos I found the photographs the kid posted on craig's of the LeSabre. I thought since the car is now Fly's I'd post them for his & your viewing pleasure. After I got the car I painted (rustoleum rattle can) the lower 1/4s that were primered, put hubcaps on it & installed the stainless steel trim that had at one point been held on by drywall screws... I used non-corrosive ones and followed suit. And here's the after: http://www.c…

Mmmhmm. Driving down the road, knowing the speed limit is 45, I'm going approximately the limit. Well, I know that the road is about to reduce speed to 35 MPH, and I look down to see that I'm going 47. Well, I depress the clutch and downshift to fourth to slow down some. While doing so, I look up to see the "Speed Limit Reduced to 35 MPH" sign. Now I've slowed down a bit, but not enough, so I downshift to third. Just as I downshift I see a policeman on the side of the road, right after the 35 MPH sign. Well, needless to say, he pulls out and by the time he got behind me I was going less than 35 to slow down for railroad tracks. He flips the lights and that's all she wrote…

Cars Crushed in Street Racing Crackdown By GREG RISLING, Associated Press Writer Link to Original Artcle @ FoxNews RIALTO, Calif. — Charles Hoang winced when the whoosh went out of the tires. Daniel Maldonado took pictures with a digital camera as glass exploded and rained down to the ground. The cars the teens had so meticulously souped up and tricked out were crushed Wednesday as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing in Southern California. "That's my heart, my dream," said Hoang, 18, of Chino, who was surrounded by friends as his 1998 Acura Integra was put into a compactor. "That's my girlfriend, the love of my life. The cops can crush my car, but they can…

One thing I've never understood. How can people who are clearly in the wrong return the finger? I was biking today and got cut off by someone who just had to slam on the brakes at the stop light anyways. I let her have it through the open window and gave her the finger. She returned it and truly enraged me. Took everything in me not to beat the living crap out of her in front of her kids. I don't get it - why risk this? I'm clearly already enraged by her, why would she want to make it worse?

Just watch this really quick video: http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/3421/ My wife is a makeup artist - so when someone comes up to her and says "make me look like that" she'll need a computer to do it. I always knew they used photoshop to clean up the imperfections and the "cottage cheese" thighs, but this is crazy.

I figure there are many cars that we all can agree on or at least personally feel never got the chance to live, that were cancelled when they were nice and could of been reconfigured rather than discarded. Of course, it's easy to say "Oh, bring back X and call it a day", I'm gonna up the ante a bit and ask what should be done, and to start, gonna bring in the American Roadsters from our favorite General: The Kappa twins themselves! Now, I understand the platform costed them $$$, and it wasn't exactly a Miata slayer, but I feel like now, people are starting to notice them again and they did have potential, whether it'd be en…

Went out car shopping today as well. Took a look at this Grand Prix GTP coupe http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_...ng=en&cardist=9 This car is loaded except, power passenger's seat and sunroof/moon roof. Took it out for a test drive... even before starting the car the a/c / heating controls knobs looked out of place as if the were from another car. The driver's side window was sluggish going up/down. Passenger's side wouldn't even go down. The leather didn't seem ripped or torn. there was a little wear on the passenger seat near the door but that's about all I noticed. The passenger's side mirror was a bit sluggish. The heating works.. but couldn't get …

Yesterday in Bracciano, we were at some guy's apartment who is also a well-known chef in the area and since he works part time for Iowa State, he cooked us a seven course meal. While we were there, his wife had on their collection of 80s music, and one song came on that I know I used to hear on the radio when I was a little kid and want to try to find it, but I have no idea who it's by or what any of the lyrics even are. So I figured I'd give it a shot and see if anyone here knows what song I'm talking about. The singer sounds a lot like the guy from Depeche Mode or the Cure, but the song isn't by either of those two as far as I know. It's sort of a slower tempo song…

From posts I've read here in the past, I think I would be safe to assume that a lot of guys here like phantom builds, myself included. It's probably one of the better by-products the scales of automotive economy of the '70s and '80s gave us -- take one unassuming '80s ElCamino and throw some Pontiac Grand Am sheetmetal over it and -- presto! -- your GrandCamino ST awaits you. Well, I stumbled upon an ad on Craigslist today where a guy out in Lawrenceburg is selling an '83 Regal and an '83 Grand Prix for $900 each. He says they're easy resto projects. Despite how much I doubt this, I wouldn't mind having the Grand Prix as the basis for a phantom project of my own: build a…

By Diane Sweet 9/21/08 8:01 PM Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain started out his day-long Michigan visit last week with a surprise stop at an Oakland County General Motors Corp. plant. McCain toured GM’s Lake Orion assembly plant that makes Chevy Malibus and Pontiac G6s. With his wife Cindy McCain by his side, McCain shook hands with plant workers. But he met some opposition. I doubt the McCain’s will be visiting the GM plant again anytime soon. I saw a Yukon Hybrid out on a dealer lot today (sorry, no pics) but the damned thing had 8 hybrid badges. One on each front fender, on on each c-pillar, the big-ass graphic on the bottom of the doors (god I hate that, worse than the "IROC" on 3rd gen Camaros) then one on the tailgate and another on the back window. Jesus, Toyota may run a lot of "we're green" tv ads, but the f@#king Prius on has one hybrid badge.

I was thinking about the so-called crossovers I dig (*those that are basically semi-tall cars and don't remotely look like SUVs)...those one could easily lower and drive like a sedan, wagon (which the thing basically is) or fastback. I see my faves going in this order: 1. Ford Flex-great for family, hanging out with the bros, or a complete date (if you know what I mean!)...looks are cool and inspiring. And it's all-American (sans D3 platform originiating with Volvo) 2. Infiniti EX-it's basically a G35/37 hatch. Just find a way to lower it and it's on. 3. Toyota Venza-yeah, it's partially based on the evil Camry, but I love the exterior. Looks like another gre…

So the other day I had to stop for gas on the way home from DC. Trying to mind my pennies, I stopped at a 7-Eleven gas station and put about $20 in the tank of the Bonneville. Fast-forward to Friday, and as I'm driving to DC that morning/afternoon, my SES light comes on. Code: P0404, which is an EGR malfunction. So I'm like "aw crap" since I still have a pending SES light in my wife's Maxima that I need to get taken care of before we move in June. I'm looking up the code on the Internet to see what's required to fix the issue. Then I get a bright idea... how about I get gas from a real station? I fill up at a BP on the way home, and voilà, no more SES light on Sa…

For some reason, I've been eying the old Opel GT lately. There's something about the thought of an uncommon vintage mini-Vette that just leaps out and grabs me. Of course, eyeballing gives way to Craigslisting the hell out of a 200 mile radius of your area and, as my luck would have it, I found a drivable example somewhere in Nashville. Did you click the link? Okay, okay. I already know what you're thinking. Yeah, the impromptu camo paintjob was more than likely done by someone at some point in the little Opel's lifetime with a few too many rattle cans of paint, a few too many cans of Coors, but far fewer bright ideas. Yes, it has its share of dents and dings and minor s…

NOTE: I figured somebody had to pick up the slack from 98's abscence, and post the latest Autoextremist articles. So I did. Detroit. After wading through yet another glowing article about NASCAR, this time from Fortune magazine (September 5th cover date), it's clear to me that the mainstream media and sports marketing gurus have not only partaken of the NASCAR Kool-Aid, they've had taps installed in their houses for a constant free-flowing dose of it every morning. Members of the media in a kinder, gentler era would refer to Fortune's genuflection to and canonization of NASCAR as a "puff" piece. I'm not going to be that nice. This is 200…

So, my car insurance for this term went up $234... that's for 6 months. Two accidents with the Sierra and two speeding tickets will take a toll, I understand that. Still, it seemed a huge penalty, especially with loyalty discounts I was given. As the spokesmodel went over all my information, she asked me to verify that I am RENTING my home. When I informed her I own my home, suddenly my car insurance premium went back down $45! And they are sending me a refund for the last term of $28, for being a homeowner. With gas prices and some media bashing of people using SUV's only for single person commutes, I was curious to see how many people use SUV's for those uses. My vehicle is a Chevy Avalanche. I work at home but have the truck because I pull a 22' enclosed trailer with it. I only put on around 8k-10k per year since I work out of home. When me and the woman go out of town we take her 32mpg Alero. 50% of the miles on my Av are pulling a trailer or using for hauling misc. items. The other 50% of milage is random local commuting. Therefore my catagory is Mostly to tow/haul. If I didn't have the trailer to pull I would have a car in it's place.

I mentioned in the "I can only imagine" thread that I'd love to get a home on the outskirts of town or in the country or in a small town. I've lived "city life" (well, between Chicago-type city life and small town life, anyway) all of my life, except for when I was in college ... and the short time I lived in Nashville TN in 1996. I know some think it nuts to live in a small town, but the following, which was given to me by a family friend years ago, gives some of the reasons why I'd like to live in a small town. Course, room for a big garage ... and the idea of not having many "city ordinances" to contend with ... are big factors as well ... he he.... Life in a small…

Was in the drive thru at Dunkin Donuts this morning, behind a Ford Ecosport. Studying the rear, I realized the portion of the right taillight on the rear door has a door handle built into it... the rear door is side hinged like the old Rav4 on these, i think. But behind me was a more interesting car--a maroon w/ white top early 80s Olds 98 4dr...appeared solid.

In recent years my wife and I have had GREAT luck with the GM dealers (besides the Saturn dealer). Don't get me wrong, they've made mistakes but they always make amends for their error. Most importantly they ALWAYS make sure to provide professional customer service. If I wasn't such a GM fan I would have headed down to the toyota dealer to trade in my Buick by now. Not because the car isn't great, which it is. But because of POOR customer service. The story is long. For those that have time (also very rough as I wrote quickly with little regard to grammar and such) . . . My experience with the Buick/Cadillac/GMC/Pontiac Dealer in McMinnville, OR – Larsen Motor…

As of today, I have DSL. Oh what a wonderful thing it is. Sure, it's not the fastest thing.. but compared to dial up, it's a virtual heaven. I can actually watch videos without the 30 second pauses as it downloads only 3 seconds worth of video. As well, myspace's excessive ads no longer haunt me. Chris's habit of posting overly large pictures of debut vehicle no longer makes me whine about it everytime I chat with him. Downloading music can occur within minutes... instead of hours. Keeping it short and simple: What is it that attracts you to someone? Both body and mind. For me... Something about brown eyes grabs ahold of me and won't let go. I get all ga-ga for them. :D Overall, I prefer tall, dark, and hansom... minus the tall. I'd say something for women too but for some odd reason I seem to be attracted to them less and less each day. I don't understand it at all. I was sure I was bi. I'm just confused anymore... Anyways, what is it?

My area has a few flashing cameras that take pictures of red light infractions. A few times, these things were apparently going off at random and erroneously, and I've even been in the intersection a time or two, and have not received a ticket in the mail. What a nuisance that must be. Tonight, I'm coming home from doing some shopping and I'm at a left turn pocket at the intersection but STOPPED. I see this thing flashing every now and then, thinking it was the setting sun in my face. Heck no...it was a photo-controlled intersection. I was wondering what was setting it off, because everyone seemed to be heeding the signals. What triggers these things? Can being…

He was found in a New York apartment naked and surrounded by pills. It is believed that it is Mary Kate Olson's apartment. Honestly, he was a part of my childhood. Most people my age agree that '10 Things I Hate About You' was one of those movies that "marked" our generation (like 16 Candles or 'The Breakfast club'). He truly was a great character actor. I never would have assumed I would feel like this, but I am really really crushed.

Very long list, I wont bother to copy it all over here. I will say this, some very very not good songs on it. Clicky for full list I have to admit, seeing Too Drunk to F*ck on any best songs lists is awesome, Hunger Strike should be higher than 471, Jump by Kriss Kross (seriously, wtf?) The list is bogus, complete crap, like four good songs on it. We should destroy Blender magazine. I mean come on, the list has the Macarena in the top 200.

Okay, the last one didn't go over well. Maybe people didn't feel like they had enough to pick from. This one will rectify that. We will use new intro 2018 models this go-round, of which there are plenty! Rules- 1) New cars only, must be CONFIRMED for 2018 MY. No 2019's, no 2017's, no upcoming models that aren't official yet. 2) Choices must be either ALL NEW or SIGNIFICANTLY updated. 3) Maximum of 5 choices. 4) These are your only vehicles. That's it!!

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/10/la-time...ear-i/#comments NBC is inching closer to finalizing the cast for the American version of the hit BBC series Top Gear, but it looks more and more like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Tim Allen won't be part of the program. Reportedly to be called just "Gear", the show is anticipated to include four presenters instead of the BBC's three – although one could be assuming the role of The Stig as the show's test driver. Adam Carolla announced on his radio show that he'd be taking part in the program. Formula D driftmaster Tanner Faust is also tipped to be on the show (possibly in the aforementioned test driver role). However Dan Neil,…

I finally took my GED test. I'm still awaiting official results, however, I heard that I passed with flying colors. I must say, I was shocked at how easy the test was. I went into it, having not studied beyond taking one practice test, expecting to fail. The first section, taking both Mathematics and Writing/Grammar wasn't hard in the least. For math, it was basics. For grammar, it was common sense. For writing, it was knowing how to write, which is clearly not that hard, unless we're talking about someone who has divulged themselves in rap and instant messaging slang. The second section, consisting of Science, Social Studies, and Reading, wasn't quite as easy, but sti…

Usually front-engine 2+2s, fastback or notchback, meaty engine, nice long hood, packed with creature comforts and bang for the buck. Pure style, absolute driving pleasure. The ultimate true personal car. A grown man's sports car in every respect. The great GM V-8 powered Bitter SC Not to be confused with the Ferrari 400i

It’s that time of year again! Here’s the 5th anniversary edition of the list of the best and worst of all things C&G and GM over the past year. Before we all relive these moments, here’s a mention of some of the more significant events that occurred in the outside world: The war in Iraq sadly continued to plod on without any seeming kind of direction. In the U.S. elections, control of the Senate turned on the word “macaca” along with a return to the concept of checks and balances in government. The year ended with the passing of the 38th President and the execution of a ruthless dictator. On this board, the year began with the shocking passing of Chief. GM intr…

Just wondering what everyone else here thought regarding current Delta-based cars. The one I feel is the best is, of course, the one that isn't available here. I feel that the Opel Astra received all of the attention due to the demanding European market. Just take the first IONs for an example. It was panned by everyone. Car & Driver called it the "most disappointing all-new American car in over a decade" while they described the Cobalt compared to the ION as "from dead last to head of the class". It just doesn't seem right to me that we're forced to take Grade B or even C products compared to GM Europe's current Grade A products. Chevrolet Cobalt Chevrolet HHR …

I put down Bleu Cheese because that's what I insitictively ordered as a kid or teenager. However, the reality of it is that the brand of bleu cheese made a world of difference. Nothing can touch the bleu cheese from Bob's Big Boy. I used to put it on my Big Boy combo's salad and order a side of it in which to dip my fries. I would now say that Thousand Islands seems to be more reliable. It's almost always good whereas Bleu Cheese is more variable. I do NOT like Italian dressing...it's kind of boring. However, the Italians think we're weird because we put "mayonnaise on our salad," as one commented to me. What type of dressing do you prefer?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/24/eco...ulus/index.html Basically if you're single, fill out your taxes, and made <$75,000 in 2007, you get an extra $600. If you're married, fill out your taxes joinly w/ your spouse, and made <$150,000 together in 2007, you get an extra $1200 + $300 per child. My Cobalt could definitely make use of the extra $600... That's a set of springs, struts, and shocks. Badass!

I was drafted to move a very large item (think boat-sized and boat-shaped) yesterday but didn't do it, so I had to do it this morning. Obviously my Fusion isn't equipped to tow one of these so I had to borrow something. There is at least one Outlook in the fleet, but it was gone today, so I was left with either a Durango (ew!) or one of the dozen or moreTundras sitting there. I'll say this, the Tundra tows easily and rides very well with a trailer in tow.

I officially hate PCs. They all get slower and slower with age, and now mine just refueses to work properly. It doesn't matter how fast the processor is, how much empty hard drive space is left, or how often I run anti-spyware software... it always makes me wanna throw it out the window. This never ever happens with my sister's Macs. Now there's this permanent box thing I can't get rid of, and I'm sooo not rebooting.

Okay, who else here was up at 12:01 AM, waiting outside (or inside) for the latest edition of the Harry Potter series??? I will admit that I was just as interested in it as my 13 y-o stepson is. I was just fine waiting until Saturday morning to go and pick up a copy from the local Target, but the main town next to me (Mount Holly) had a "Harry Potter" party in their historical village shops and I figured my money would be better spent keeping a small mom & pop bookstore alive, rather than lining another Big Box's coiffers. Anyone else here get one at midnight, or planning to get one soon?

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB118...8986501078.html Interesting article from the Wall Street Journal about the future collectibility of today's automobiles. Anything any of you agree/disagree with? Any cars the people in the article, in your opinion, failed to mention? Personally, I don't think much of anything from today will be collectible. Of course the exotics and supercars will always have their place in history, but the normal stuff will never have any value. The cars of the masses from the days of old have a value, but do you think anything built today could ever equal that? I don't see anybody bulding a retirement fund by sitting on a barn stuffed with …

Number of birds killed by the BP oil spill: at least 2,188 and counting. Number of birds killed by wind farms: 10,000-40,000 annually. Number of birds killed by cars: 80 million annually. Number of birds killed by cats: Hundreds of millions to 1 billion annually. Don't worry there is some good news. Number of birds killed by fisheries: tens to hundreds of thousands annually (fortunately for the birds, some of these fisheries are now shut down).

I grew up in this kaleidoscopic multi-ethnic city, so my friend's parents, people in high school/college and neighbors provided fuel for the fire. Here's my list: Cuban - this is Ricky Ricardo talk, this is NOT a Mexican accent. I love it. It's my favorite. Iranian-Middle Eastern - perfected from LA experiences - make damn sure you leave out articles in front of nouns whenever possible. I once asked this Middle Eastern guy at a party where he was from. His response: "I leev een Bay Area." I had meant which country he came from, but that's ok. I can't drive through Concord on 680 without muttering that to myself. Southern - it's great and it can be so affected. …

So... I've been interviewing for a teaching position starting next year since when I graduated, budgets failed and there were no permanent Italian positions available on the Island. I was fortunate and got several interviews relatively quickly, and one district has been working fast (not common for schools on Long Island), and the procedure has been quick. I have my 5th interview tomorrow (yes, on Long Island, this is normal), with this one district. You have to first interview with a committee, then do a demo lesson, then interview with the chairperson of the department, then an assistant principal, then interview with a principal, then with the superintendent, an…

I had Arkus out running around the place a while back, and he disappeared from view just long enough for me to know that it meant trouble (with Arkus that's about a minute or so). So I start calling him. He still doesn't show up. Just as I'm about to jump in the Silverado to hunt him down, he rounds the bend from behind the barn. Carrying a fox in his mouth. I yell at him and he drops the fox, and crawls over to me (realizing that he's screwed-up again). So I grab a hold of of him thinking that I'll need to put a wounded fox out of its misery. When I looked up, the fox was running away (looking pretty pissed-off). I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking I'd…

Sometimes, it would get so crazy that we would eat 5 dinners a week at the place because it had all the young man's staple foods: wings beer onion rings salad I wish somebody would build one in Fresno.

I found this 91 Cavalier where the Aries was. You can see the $150 Aries in one of the pics. It still is there 2 months later. Anyways, this car was a two-owner car. It was bought in 94 as a used car by the parts manager's mother at this dealer. She babied it and drove it for 12 years. It needs some rocker work and the engine needs cleaning. The interior is almost spotless. The new car smell can even be smelled. The rear seat still has the dealer plastic on it. There is some rust on the bottom of the doors as well but a lot of it is dirt. It hasn't rusted through anywhere and is still original paint. There is one dent in the passenger side rear door. Minor though. It has …

So the wife and I began to do some car shopping, basically test driving the cars she's interested it to see what she thinks. Here's the list of cars she's test driven in the past two weeks: 1. Buick LaCrosse FWD Leather (her favorite so far) 2. Buick Regal FWD (she's not a fan, I like it! The 2.0L turbo 4 cyl is a rocket engine in this car) 3. Buick Verano Leather (too small for both of us, nice car, just not her cup of tea) 4. Buick Encore FWD Leather (surprisingly, she's no longer interested in the Encore, likes the exterior look but not the interior styling) 5. Chevy Impala 2LT (her second favorite, was quite impressed with the amount of features for the price) …

Well, if this doesn't solidify the fact that the GT500 is a porky, underperforming "performance" car, I don't know what does: http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83159 4130lbs (and it's not even the convert!), 56/44 weight distribution, 1/4 mile in 13.1 and $47k+ does not seem to appealing to me. A 2006 GTO with a good driver and a couple simple bolt-ons will beat the GT500 for $15k less, and that's before dealer markups. And what's the point of having 500HP if it's made at redline? Unless the fuel cut-off is well above redline, the 500HP is only available for a very short time.

It's been awhile since we've gotten this much snow. We have anywhere between 6-12 inches depending on the exact area. Some roads, they are just now plowing. I had fun going to work on roads that hadn't been plowed. It was the first time the Jetta had to deal with alot of snow. Did well, except I had to be pushed into my driveway, with it being on a incline without being able to get a run at it. I made it up one pretty long and steep hill somehow on the way home.

Yeah so, I'm on vacation this week. I leave to go camping tomorrow and I bought a new tent that sets up in the truck bed. It got here fast, I ordered it Friday and it came on Saturday. So I put the truck in the backyard, took off the tonneau and did a test set-up. All the hype on the box said "20 minute setup!" Yahright. An hour later and I finally got the thing erected. The tent is made by a Canadian manufacturer, so the instructions were written in English... with a French accent. Oui? Non. Anyway... ha, I hope to look less like a retodd tomorrow at the campground setting this thing up.
