WHAT IF: GM had fully and properly engineered the Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel V8? Where would diesel powered vehicles be in terms of sales percentage today? I believe that Americans would have bought a lot more of them, which would have led to evolution of the technology for economy and performance. Diesel power would have owned a very large percentage of the U.S. market to this day, as it has in Europe. BUT... we all know how it was handled and were we are today. What do you all think?

OK I love summer weather. I wear long sleeves @ work all year. But last evening I broke down and stuck my window units in here at the house. One, a Maytag, just works, never an issue, it hums merrily along. The other, a Frigidaire, runs fine when I first turn it on, cools, blows plenty of air... but it always seems to "bind up", or freeze. The compressor gets loud, and the air flow diminishes. It seems to be leaned far enough to let condensation drip away like it's supposed to. The air stays cold, it just doesn't "move". If I shut it off, I can eventually hear it "crack", like it is thawing somewhere. Any tips?

So I saw an ad for a Fiat 500L Urbana Edition the other day and while I can say it is not my cup of tea at all, it got me thinking about cars I do like that I am at least a little bit ashamed to admit to. With all the (some would argue: overblown) current [no pun intended] attention on electric vehicles, might be interesting to acknowledge some past efforts. In the very early days of the industry, they met with considerable success, at the detriment to gasoline-powered vehicles, sales-wise. But there were a whole slew of occasional proposals, some which were merely concepts, some which were intended to but never saw production, others which eked out a small run. Last week we had "Unpopular Opinion about an Unpopular Car". This week we're doing Unpopular Opinion about a Popular Car. What good selling car or one that gets lots of praise in the motoring press do you have a contrary opinion about? One entry for me is the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Guess what? I am NEW to these. Typically, I've had rental cars while on vacation or, if in foreign urban centers, I've just used their metro systems to get around. I need to get to the airport. Early. If not an early flighty, I just take a bus from a suburban mall to a train station for the subway into the airport and go on the cheap. Can't beat that. Plus, I love riding subway type trains. Rainy and foggy so far this May....Friday was particularly gloomy and foggy/rainy...saw a white C7 convertible (top up) out in the gloom. This morning saw a dark red '19 Camaro SS at the grocery, still had a window sticker and temporary tag, yet the rear bumper was cracked and scuffed.

Happy April Fools Day, folks. To kick off this thread, I don't have a really interesting sighting. Just an observation. I saw the current Lincoln Continental going down the freeway next to me, ultimately passing me as it was moving along to my left. The Continental's front grille makes that nice, vertical Lincoln statement. I once sat in one at the auto show. Let's first say that this is the first non-GM product my family has owned, and the GM dealership where we always take our vehicles gives us very fair prices. Anyways, my brother's Civic had it's first service warning light and code come on this week (I guess all Hondas do this). The code was B12, meaning the car thinks it's time for an oil change, air filter change, cabin air filter change, and tire rotation (plus inspection of whatever). What would be some nominations for 7 wonders of the automotive world? I'll compile a list from your nominations and we'll have an article about it. You don't need to nominate 7 in total, just something you think should be included on the list. Just picking your favorite cars isn't going to be enough. The vehicle should be historically significant and/or mark a departure in automotive design/technology. Last night, my wife and I took a trip of about 100km to another city. I got off the highway at my exit and pulled up to the stoplight at the end of the ramp. All of a sudden the dash lights up like a christmas tree (Service Engine light, Engine Power Reduced light, Service Vehicle light, Traction Control light) and "CODE 84" shows up in the DIC. Was in the drive thru at Dunkin Donuts this morning, behind a Ford Ecosport. Studying the rear, I realized the portion of the right taillight on the rear door has a door handle built into it... the rear door is side hinged like the old Rav4 on these, i think. I had to go to a luncheon for continuing ed (it was free) and got a ride with one of my co-workers. He drives a 1986 BMW 635 coupe with 130,000 original miles. I got in it and was surprised at how noisy it was. Not only that, the transmission shifted with bumps at each shift point. The air vents were not particularly well placed and it didn't direct enough A/C to keep me comfortable. This was a high line BMW in its day? Come on. I was not impressed at all. I guess I'll start this month off. 1977 Caprice Classic sedan in light green, perfect condition, driven in traffic yesterday. I remember how excited I was in the autumn of 1976, (I was 12 years old and a complete car FREAK) to see the brand new, smaller and very good looking GM B, C and D-bodies hit the streets. First one I saw on the road back then... was a yellow Electra 225 with tan vinyl top. I think I freaked my grandparents out with my hoops and hollers that day.

I took a drive east up the Lake Erie coast towards the PA line, visiting a couple wineries and a couple of my favorite beaches..beautiful and sunny, but too hot (85). Many brands are now featuring what I call the "laptop left open" look atop the center stack of newer vehicles. Mazda is doing this, and some German marques are doing this, too. It appears that the new Ford Focus will also feature it. Mazda 6 (?) BMW 3 series 2019 Ford Focus The Malibu has it, sort of, but it looks fairly well integrated. Latest Malibu I do not like most of them. I can handle it on the Malibu. It may be convenient but, in most cases, it looks ugly ... to me.

Good evening! Its been a while since Ive posted outside the Merchandise forum. My lease on my '17 Traverse is coming to an end in the next couple months. Once again, I am not finding many good deals on GM vehicles at the moment. I am holding out a little longer, to see how incentives go. Today, I was driving down a major street with two traffic lanes in each direction that had residential homes on each side of it. I was in the right hand lane. It's been a while since I've last checked in so here's a short update since my last post. After a little over 2 years with Car and Driver, I am now back on the hunt for employment/trying to get back into the grind as a freelancer. Several members have little projects going on, I figured I'd have a thread for mine. This will be an ongoing thread, if for no other reason than because I like documenting my progress. After building my own mower and rekindling an hobby I had when I was younger, I thought it might be fun to fix and flip mowers for some extra crash and as something to do. Just for kicks ~ Take what you paid for your daily driver, then look up it's trade in average value on kbb.com. Take that difference (your vehicle's depreciation), and divide it by the miles you've driven it (to the nearest 500 or 1000 should be fine). This gives you a cost per mile for ownership (obviously separate from maintenance/repairs). Me ~ '04 Silverado 2500HD, $15035 difference, 133K miles = 11 cents/mile.

Just recently, I went to look at the fresh new car version of a car I have rented. I wanted to see the sticker, sit in it, check visibility, yada yada. So, parents are away for an extended period of time. I try to drive their 2013 LaCrosse once every week or two just to move it around. Today something odd happened... started it up, and the first things I noticed is there was no gauge sweep and the animation for the LCD screen between the tach/speedometer was out of sync with the animation on the radio's screen. • We bought our '11 Jeep Liberty in Feb of 2016, with 53K miles. Not a single problem to date, not a fancy vehicle, but everyone here likes driving it fine. Now has 80K. Going to keep it, my one son is it's regular driver. • Wife's 2009 Malibu LT was bought new. I haven't seen many movies lately but the last one I saw was "The Commuter." Blame it on bargain Tuesday. I looked at the reviews and they were lukewarm. I went to see it and enjoyed it. OK, this is the current condition of these 2 rides. The finned wonder is my '59 Invicta, the other is my brother's '71 GTO 4-spd. I am head of him in the process: all metal work is completed and in epoxy primer, and the shell is back on the refurbished frame. Front & RR suspension is done, as is my rear axle. I also have a bunch of the new parts, and a bunch of cosmetically restored parts. My brother may or may not be done with metal repair- I think the floors still need work. What are your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day Traditions? Since I am starting this off, I will tell you what Mine are, been the same for the last 26 years of Marriage. I am married to a Korean and they have very specific things that are done. We start off with a Korean Pot sticker making party in the first week of Dec. Make hundreds, people who help get some to take home, most are kept for use in what is called Korean New Year's Day Soup. The talk in the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class thread got me thinking about SUVs for me. I want something big and comfortable with lots of torque. Prefer CPO to have a warranty and not deal with severe depreciation. Should have a 6,000lb minimum tow rating (Not that I tow, but that rating requires a tongue weight rating of 600lbs which is needed for a Mototote) I like cushy rides. Thoughts are: Jeep Grand Cherokee with air suspension Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe SWB XC90 doesn't have a high enough rating, but I do like it. What else am I forgetting?

The strangest of thoughts came to me today when I went to pick up my daughter from the bus stop this afternoon. It wasnt at the bus stop per se that this vision and thought popped into my head, but rather at the grocery store parking lot when we stopped to pick up a few items. Hey guys, I have a buddy of mine who's typically a Chevy guy but he came across a 2012 F150 XLT EcoBoost. What I'm really looking for is are they reliable...
