While Mercedes-Benz and Audi have offered performance versions of the flagship sedans, BMW has been the outlier. The closest the German automaker has gotten is the B7 done by BMW specialist Alpina. But BMW M's engineering boss Albert Biermann has dreams of an M7. “I would love to compete in this area of the market. The money is just there to pick up. An M7 would be a much different proposition to the B7,” Biermann told Autocar. Now Biermann says such a model isn't in their plans at the moment. Currently, the division is looking into all-wheel drive for the M5 and M6, and possible M version of the 3-Series GT. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers …

BMW is coming close to making a decision on a possible third member of their i family. Autocar says there are two proposals for the next model which is known as the i5. First is an extended version of the i3 and the second is a sedan that will directly compete with Tesla's upcoming Model 3. Ian Robertson, BMW's board member who oversees sales and marketing says the company is in “the final stages” of which proposal to go with. “You will see more i products, and we are in the final stages of deciding what the next car will be and when you’ll see it,” said Robertson. It is expected that BMW will show the i5 next year during the company's centenary celebratio…

It seems some changes are coming to BMW's M division based on recent comments from the head of the division, Frank van Meel. First up is transmissions. van Meel tells Autocar that DCT dual-clutch and automatic transmissions have a bright future for M cars. Not so much for the manual transmission as sales are declining. “From a technical standpoint, the future doesn’t look bright for manual gearboxes. The DCT and auto ’boxes are faster and they have better fuel consumption. It’s difficult to say we’ll stick to the manual, but we still have a big fan community for manuals and we are not going to take away something the customer wants to have,” said van Meel. van…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 5, 2013 Chew on this for a moment: "One in four new BMW cars is now a BMW SAV." SAV for those who don't know BMW lingo is for sport activity vehicle, or what we could call a crossover. Its one reason why BMW's X lineup has grown from the lowly X5 to a family of vehicles including the X1, X3, X5, and X6. Its also why at the Shanghai Motor Show BMW will be showing smaller crossover coupe called the X4 Concept. The X4 Concept's design can best be explained as a X6 left in the washing machine a bit too long. In other words, its a polarizing design in a smaller package. We don't know any details on the interior or wh…

BMW has plans of launching 25 electrified models by 2025 - 12 of those being fully electric. But don't expect to start seeing mass production of those 12 models anytime soon. BMW CEO Harald Krueger told analysts in Munich that its current electric vehicle technology is not profitable enough to scale up to volume production. “We wanted to wait for the fifth generation to be much more cost competitive. We do not want to scale up with the fourth generation,” said Krueger. The difference in costs between the fourth and fifth-generation according to Krueger "was a “two digit number” in percent terms." BMW is currently developing a sixth-generation of electric te…

Unlike many of its competitors, BMW has never officially done a performance oriented 7-Series (i.e. M7). Instead, they have used German tuner ALPINA to build a more potent version - the B7. With a new 7-Series in showrooms, it was only time before an announcement of a new B7 would appear. Yesterday, ALPINA announced the 2017 B7 xDrive. It starts with a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 that ALPINA messed around with and was able to extract 600 horsepower and 590 pound-feet (this engine in the 750i only produces 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet). Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. Alpina says the B7 xDrive can hit 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds and reach a top spe…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 27, 2012 The new craze with luxury automakers is building compact luxury sedans. Audi has a new A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz is working on the new CLA. Now, BMW is joining the craze with a new 1-Series sedan. Autocar reports that BMW has begun planning a new 1-Series sedan to come out after the new 1-series coupé and convertible. The sedan will be the spiritual successor to the E30 3-Series. The report says the sedan will utlize a RWD platform using some bits from the new 3-Series. This seems a bit odd since BMW is working on a new FWD platform. Powertrains will include four and six-cylinder engines, with an elec…

BMW 1-Series U.S.-Bound (Eventually) Way back in January of this year, BMW's CEO, Tom Purves, was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the 1-series, "is absolutely coming" and up until now, that's the last we've heard. Now, in another interview with AutoNews, Norbert Reithofer, BMW's newest CEO, says, "We will definitely bring the 1-series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback." Instead, we should expect a coupe, sedan and station wagon (although we're not quite sure how that's different from the image above) in the future. Autoblog

The fundamental technology involved in battery cells, electric motors and the power electronics will be used in our upcoming plug-in hybrid models. When it comes to the electrification of the drivetrain, we are deliberately developing a wide-ranging expertise in order to offer our customers worldwide the ideal solution," said Herbert Diess, member of the board for BMW's development. BMW has a rich history of building the drivers auto such as the legendary models of the 1800, BMW M1, BMW 3 series, BMW X5 and the electrified i8. With this rich history, it only makes sense that the next evolution is the iX3 with an all-electric range of 805 kilometers or 500 miles on a single charge for the BMW iX3 50 xDrive model. Across the whole model lineup, the iX3 has a range of 678 Kilometers / 421 miles to 805 kilometers / 500 miles on a single charge. The BMW iX3 according to Chairman Oliver Zipse is the most important all new vehicle for BMW in the last half-century and will lead BMW into the next decade and beyond globally. The iX3 is a quantum leap forw…

In 2018, when BMW launched it's 7.0 operating system for its in-car infotainment, it included Apple Car Play for free for the first 12 months. After that, the owner was asked to pay $80 for a 1 year subscription to Car Play or $300 for a 240 month subscription. This caused a stir among BMW owners because Apple Car Play is included at no charge in nearly every other brand out there and because Apple doesn't charge manufacturers to use Apple CarPlay in their models. Models as basic as the Chevrolet Sonic have CarPlay as standard and without any subscription fees. Now BMW has confirmed it is backing away from the subscription model in order to keep customers happy. Al…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 10, 2011 It seems every automaker is introducing four-door coupe. Within the past few years Mercedes has introduced the CLS, Volkswagen with the CC, Porsche and the beluga whale or Panamera, and Audi with the A7. Now, BMW has introduced their four-door coupe; the 6 Series Grand Sport. The 6 Series Grand Sport started life as a concept at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show and is almost a direct copy of the concept. As the name implies, the four-door coupe is based on the 6 Series coupe, but is stretched a full 4.4 inches, meaning more space for back passengers. Power will come from two engines; a 3.0L turbocharged …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 16, 2012 With the last generation 3-Series and current X5, BMW brought back the diesel engine to their lineup. A 3.0L inline-six producing 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. That could send a 3-Series to 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds and a X5 in 6.9 seconds. However, the concern is not performance, but fuel economy. BMW realizes this and has a pair of new diesel engines on their way to show it. This past Friday, Automobile senior editor Jason Cammisa tweeted out that BMW would introduce a 2.0L, single-turbo, inline-four diesel engine producing 180 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. There is also a second diesel engine on its way. B…

It appears to be German crossover day. This morning, we reported on Audi's new 'coupe' crossover, the Q8. This evening, BMW has pulled the covers off the 2019 X5. Like the new X3, the 2019 X5 doesn't look all that different at first glance. Get a bit a closer and the changes become noticeable. The front is slightly bolder with a sculpted hood, larger kidney grilles, and hard corners for the headlights. The side profile features slightly more sculpting for the doors. For the back, BMW is retaining the dual-tailgate from the current X5. Overall dimensions grow by an inch on average. The interior is a huge improvement over the outgoing model with new dash design and …

BMW M Coupe to Enter Series Production Source: BMW 11/23/2005 -- Following strong consumer reaction to the concept Z4 Coupe at the 2005 Frankfurt and Tokyo Auto Shows, BMW has confirmed that both the Z4 Coupe and an M version, the M Coupe will enter series production. Visitors in Frankfurt and Tokyo were captivated by the car’s stylish body with its unique silken matte finish, tailored in the very best style of a classic sports coupe. While the driving dynamics potential of the vehicle was clear in its strong, purposeful lines, equally appealing to visitors was the striking interior design. To be produced in Spartanburg, S.C., the first vehicles will be del…

Do you like the 2-Series coupe, but wished it came in a sedan? Well according to Autocar, BMW is planning to build one. Why? The next-generation BMW 3-Series is expected to grow size and the German automaker believes there is space for another sedan (or should we say a four-door coupe). At the moment, BMW is debating whether the 2-Series Gran Coupe should follow in the footsteps of the 4 and 6-Series Gran Coupe (sedan-ish) or go with five-door liftback. Whatever design is chosen, expect the 2-Series Gran Coupe to be slightly longer than the coupe. The engine lineup for the Gran Coupe is expected to be same as the coupe and convertible - a range of three and four-c…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 17, 2013 Sometimes, you get very lucky with spy shots by catching a new model without any camo or a giant cover over it. Case in point is the new BMW 2-Series coupe which was caught during what appears to be a photo shoot. The new 2-Series coupe looks to have a similar roofline as the current 1-Series coupe. The front and rear ends have been cleaned up and smoothed over. The model seen in the shots is reportedly the new M235i with a set of large wheels, slimmer headlamps, and large air intakes on either side of the front end. Power will come from two engines. BMW's TwinPower turbo-four will be in the base 228i co…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 29, 2011 BMW is serious with their upcoming i lineup with the i3 and i8 due out in 2014. The i series will utilize BMW’s LifeDrive architecture, which essentially is a composite body/passenger cell mated to a powertrain unit (or units). BMW is busy doing testing on both models to get them ready and an i8 was recently caught by a spy photographer. Designwise, the i8 mule stays true to the concept except for the doors. The pictures show the mule dropping the long glass doors for carbon fiber for better protection in crashes. The front end reveals that i8 will come with active aerodynamics; shutters in upper an…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 13, 2012 BMW has released information and pictures of the new M6 before its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Powering the M6 is a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 (codenamed S63) outputting 560 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. If you’re wondering where you have heard these numbers before, that’s in part to the same twin-turbo 4.4L V8 powering the new M5. Diana T. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 30, 2013 BMW is hard at work on a front-wheel drive assault, with the company considering almost twenty-three FWD vehicles (Twelve for BMW, eleven for MINI). One of those vehicles could be a two-seat roadster, due out in 2015 “We are considering a car in the spirit of the original Z3. It is of similar size to the E36/7 [the codename for the Z3 produced between 1996 and 2002] but is planned to use the front-wheel drive platform to keep costs down and achieve a margin level that ensures it is sustainable at comparatively low production volumes,” a BMW official reportedly told Autocar. HANNOVER, Germany — Thermaltake, the Taiwanese manufacturer of computer cases and cooling equipment, unveiled its "Level 10" PC case at the annual CeBIT computer exposition here. The Thermaltake Gaming Tower was designed by the Munich studio of BMW's DesignworksUSA. Instead of utilizing the normal strategy of throwing all the different computer parts into one bulky, rectangular case, BMW dreamt up this idea of using a separate protective case for each component. The design of the Thermaltake Gaming Tower makes the inside components visible to help with cooling and make it look more appealing to the user. BMW is losing a lot of ground in the flagship arena to Mercedes-Benz. To combat this, the Munich-based automaker is considering an ultra-luxury sedan that will sit between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost. "Just like certain competitors, we will see that we occupy with credible offers the price bracket of 150,000 euros ($170,000) and beyond," BMW development chief Klaus Froehlich to Automotive News. Froehlich also took a jab at Mercedes-Benz by saying BMW wouldn't offer several wheelbases or "varyingly thick chrome packages." Why is BMW wanting to take on Mercedes-Benz in terms of flagships? In a word, China. Automotive news says about one of every two S…

BMW will become the next automaker to drop their diesel offerings in the U.S. Speaking to Green Car Reports, BMW spokesman Alexander Schmuck revealed diesels would be dropped for the 2019 model year for the automaker to focus on plug-in hybrids. "We're putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket," said Schmuck. BMW brought back diesel power in 2008 with the 335d and X5 3.0d that used a turbodiesel inline-six. This would be followed up by a turbodiesel four-cylinder for the 3-Series and X3, along with the inline-six for the 5-Series. But the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal in late 2015, along with stringent emissions testing and standards have caused sales of dies…

Despite the mess and tepid reception given to diesel models in the U.S. due to Volkswagen emission scandal, there are still some automakers who believe in it. A BMW spokesperson has confirmed to Car and Driver that diesel variant of the new 5-Series would be arriving in the U.S., although no timeframe was given. The model will be named the 540d. Car and Driver believe the model will be powered by the 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel found in the European-market 530d producing 262 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The 540d possibly means our version will produce slightly more power. Source: Car and Driver View full article

BMW is making the M5 just a slightly bit more aggressive with the debut of the M5 Competition. Following in the footsteps of the M2 Competition, the M5 version tweaks the powertrain, chassis, and exterior. Beginning under the hood, the twin-turbo 4.4L V8 sees a slight boost in horsepower from 600 to 617. Torque remains at 553 pound-feet, although BMW has broadened the peak torque range. 0-60 mph sees a slight improvement of 0.3 seconds - 3.1 vs. 3.4. For the chassis, BMW has added stiffer engine mounts, M-specific Variable Damper Control system, revised mounting points for the front anti-roll bar, lowered ride height, and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar. This has always been the case but the amount of energy released looks set to be cut by more than 80% thanks to a new system devised by BMW. BMW’s announcement of the new technology is somewhat of a technological bombshell as it adds yet another form of hybrid automobile – a turbosteamer. The concept uses energy from the exhaust gasses of the traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to power a steam engine which also contributes power to the automobile – an overall 15 per cent improvement for the combined…

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model that was seen via video being installed in the BMW Museum in Munich last week has finally been revealed, and the futuristic design study shows how BMW designers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to the materials that make up a car and also how the car relates to the driver. GINA stands for "Geometry and Functions in 'N' Adaptations", which basically means that designers from both BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA were allowed to throw out the rulebook. This is most evident in the GINA Light Visionary Model's outer skin, which is made entirely out of textile fabric that's pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wir…

By 2025, BMW is planning to have 25 electrified vehicles in its lineup - 12 being full electric. One of those models will look somewhat similar to the Vision iNext concept that has been revealed today. Lets address the elephant in the room, the exterior design. The overall shape is very polarizing (we know, huge understatement) with a grotesque take on BMW's iconic double kidney grille, square fenders, large glass area, and wheels that looked liked they were pulled off from a fan. No side view mirrors are to be found - instead a set of cameras handle that. There are also door handles. Instead, the surface of the car will light up, indicating where to touch to open the…

It is no secret that German automakers are busy developing vehicles to challenge the Tesla Model S and X. But there has been barely a peep about something to take on the Model 3. But that is changing according to a report from Germany’s Handelsblatt. Sources at BMW tell the publication that the company will be showing off a 3-Series electric at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. The model is said to have a range of 248 miles (400 km) and will directly compete against the upcoming Model 3. BMW declined to comment on this report. The report doesn't say if this new electric will be based on the current or next 3-Series. Our hunch is that it will be the next-…

Inside Info: BMW Sportvan Sportvans are the next big thing at BMW. In 2005, the Bavarian automaker confirmed it would build a sportvan/MPV/wagon based on the X5 (itself based on the 5 Series). The vehicle was developed under the working title RFK, but we believe it'll be called F5. Now comes word that BMW is planning a similar vehicle based off its 3 Series-called F3-though the company's board hasn't given it the green light, yet. BMW is expected to launch the F5 in mid-2009 and, if approved, the F3 the following year. Motor Trend

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 27, 2012 If you walk into a BMW dealership and are wondering why certain 1, 3, and Z4 models are wearing the "is" badge, that's BMW distinction for their performance models that sit between the normal and M models. The 'is' badge will soon be going away though. According to Car and Driver, BMW will be replacing 'is' nomenclature with the M Performance Line. For those who need a quick refresher, the M Performance Line will give BMW vehicles tweaks from BMW's M division under the hood, exterior, and interior. So vehicles like the 135is and 335is will wear the M135i and M335i. The vehicles that are pegged to become …

November 23, 2005 Test Drive: 2006 BMW 530xi Touring Wagon By Veeno Dewan Photos by Greg Wilson In the UK, where I come from, station wagons are known as "Estate cars." Apparently British automotive folklore has it that a wealthy Lord of the Manor wanted a car with a covered rear section so he could tote his pheasant shooting guns while hunting around his thousand-acre country estate: hence the term ‘estate car'. Another more elegant term for this vehicle was the ‘Shooting Brake'. I remember seeing a few old pictures of Jaguars, Rovers and even an Aston Martin converted to these ‘Shooting Brakes'. Yes, I admit station wagons keys have passed through my greasy pa…

BMW is planning on a new EV on a platform shared with Daimler according to reports. The new car, called the i2, would be about the same size as the current BMW i3, but without the expensive carbon fiber body. The i2, aimed for a 2024 launch, would have a starting price less than 30,000€ ($34,000). BMW wants to have a 300km (186 mile) range. BMW recently revised the i3 to have a larger battery. The revised battery is 42.2 kWh and gives the i3 a range of 153 miles. Sales of the combined models from both BMW and Daimler would be targeted around 500,000 annually. View full article

Bumper-to-Bumper Free maintenance remains core part of BMW's strategy By DIANA T. KURLYKO | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/12/06, 3:16 pm et A BMW 3 series snakes down the highway, flaunting its new body in the TV commercial. But performance and styling aren't the hook. At the very end of the commercial, a message flashes: free maintenance for four years/50,000 miles. It's the most generous package in the industry, including oil changes, windshield wipers, brakes - you name it, except for tires. BMW is the only manufacturer still offering bumper-to-bumper free maintenance. It's not about to change, because "free maintenance is part of our strategy…

Looks like BMW may be looking to expand into yet more markets. Spy Shots: BMW flings M3 pickup around the 'Ring There aren't words to convey just how happy this makes us. With Spring officially licking at the sanctified asphalt of the Nürburgring, testing season has kicked into high gear. Our elite squad of spy photographers has set up camp to take in the action and happened to catch this bizarre beastie obliterating its tires amongst a herd of other BMW mules. As you might expect, there's exactly zero information on the machine other than it looks for all the world to be an M3 pickup.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 9, 2012 BMW has revealed some new information on the ActiveHybrid 3 and 3-Series Sports Wagon over the past couple of days. Lets start with the ActiveHybrid3. The hybrid version of the new 3-Series will pack the 3.0L turbocharged inline-six from the 335i and a electric motor with a lithium-ion battery pack to produce 340 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. Going to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic, the ActiveHybrid3 can reach 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds, 0.2 quicker than the 335i. BMW says the ActiveHybrid 3 can travel up to 2.5 miles or up to 46 MPH on electric power alone. Fuel economy and pricing hasn't been reve…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 12, 2013 Automobile Magazine got their hands on a document issued by BMW to its dealers detailing what products would be arriving to dealers. The information, to say in the least is very interesting. We'll start with the big news first: diesels. July will be the month when BMW will begin production of the 3-Series with a diesel engine. The engine in question is a 2.0L inline-four that will be available in rear or all-wheel drive models. Wearing the 328d badge, it will be available in a sedan and a first for the U.S., a wagon. A couple of weeks ago, BMW announced the 2016 7-Series. For North America, we learned that we would be getting a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six and a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 at launch. But Car and Driver reports that more powertrains are on the way. A diesel engine is expected with about 300 horsepower, along with the return of the 760i with its monstrous V12. The Alpina B7 is expected to make a return as well, with 600 horsepower coming out a massaged V8. There is also talk of a M version of 7-Series with mild hybridization. First Drive: 2007 BMW 335i Coupe 3 Series excellence, continued By Jason Kavanagh Email | Blog Date posted: 07-16-2006 Normally, coupes are exercises in vanity: all fluff and no substance. Ego-trumping sensibility. Liberace bitch-slapping Alan Greenspan. No one knows this better than BMW, which has been in the 3 Series game since Gerald Ford was cracking his knuckles in the Oval Office. It's getting pretty good at the game, as evidenced by the outstanding latest version of the 3 Series, which debuted as a 2006 model in "E90" sedan form only. As in previous generations, the coupe version is released just when the panting over the sedan has subsided. With the 2007 BM…

Every site and magazine seems to have a different take on what the V5 and X6 are supposed to be. The overall consensus seems to be that the V5 is some sort of crossover wagon like the Volvo XC70 and Audi allroad that would slot between the 5-series wagon and X5. The X6 has been depicted as everything from a BMW version of the MB CLS to a BMW version of the Infiniti FX. Somes sources reverse the two names and suggest the X6 is the MPV and the V5 is the crossover sport wagon. Does anyone have any insight here?

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 13, 2012 This past week, a picture of a slideshow made its way onto the VWVortex forums. The picture shows what BMW might have planned for diesels in the U.S. in next couple of years. Starting next year, the 3-Series sedan will bring back a diesel option in the first quarter. The second quarter BMW will introduce the 3-Series wagon with a diesel. In the third quarter, the 5-Series diesel will come out and will be followed by the new X5 diesel at the end of the year. For 2014, the 7-Series and X3 join in on the diesel fun. What engines are in play with this plan? We know that a single-turbo 2.0L four-cylinder an…

Tesla, the electric car startup in California has put the automotive industry on notice with the Model S. TCC Test: 2007 BMW X5 4.8i It's typical that as a vehicle grows in size and becomes more "mainstream" and "family friendly," it also becomes more like the typical middle-aged clientèle that needs mainstream and family-friendly vehicles. Once-sharp reflexes and a firm suspension set up for enthusiast drivers are swapped for drop-down DVD entertainment systems for the kids and power-operated toys for the grown-ups. The X5 has an abundance of the latter, including a "simplified" version of the infamous iDrive mouse controller (more on that below), available heads-up display and an electrically activated gear shifter similar to the system first used on the 7-Series sedan…

The past decade has seen BMW exploring new niches in the marketplace with such models as the X6 and 5-Series GT. Some of them had paid off, while others haven't. The 3-Series GT falls into the latter. Following in the footsteps of the 5-Series GT (now 6-Series GT), the 3-Series offered a higher seating position and extra space for those who didn't want and SUV. But it never found an audience and BMW has decided to kill it off. “When we did the GT we saw that in demographic change people want to sit a little more upright. But then you saw X1 and X3 you can sit upright and you feel younger. So this segment is under pressure from SUVs, which are having no disadvantage i…

BMW offered the last-generation 7-Series with a diesel option in the U.S. and there was talk of offering it again with this current model. But these plans have been taken off the table. German magazine Focus reported last Friday that plans for 7-Series diesel in the U.S. were shelved. This information came from engineers at Bosch. This week, BMW Blog got the official word from BMW. “Currently there are no plans to bring the 7 Series diesel to the US market,” said Hector Arellano-Belloc, BMW NA spokesperson. No official reason was given, but BMW Blog speculates the decision likely comes from the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal. At the present moment, BMW…

The current BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain to produce a total output of 357 horsepower. But the future version of the i8 could switch to a full EV powertrain. Sources tell Autocar that German automaker would swap the turbocharged three-cylinder in the rear for two electric motors. Each electric motor (there would be three including one up front) is said to produce up to 268 horsepower. With the addition of two electric motors, BMW will add a larger battery. To allow for this, the i8's carbon fiber structure would be modified. BMW already has some ideas as to how to do this as they did an i8 hydrogen prototype where they had to modify the structure to all…

The chatter about BMW acquiring Volvo from Ford started in earnest a couple of weeks ago, and has gotten much louder in the last few days. Neither BMW nor Ford will comment, but apparently sources within Ford, BMW, and Volvo have confirmed to various news entities that Volvo is in play, but there is no consensus on where Volvo will go when it leaves Ford. Some say Volvo will go to BMW, some say it’s going to a private-equity firm, a la Chrysler/Cerberus, and some point to VW as a dark-horse contender for the company. And, of course, it may not go anywhere. Although it’s worth pointing out that we predicted in December 2006 that Ford would certainly sell Jaguar, Aston Mar…

Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 BMW M6 Convertible It's hard to put a value on a car like this. It offers so much to the so few who can afford it. In terms of relative size, price and performance, there really is no competitor. Name another 2+2 convertible with its capabilities. Some may say the four-seater Bentley Continental GTC, but it costs a bunch more. The Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG? Similar power and price, but no backseat at all. Jaguar XKR convertible? Close, but not the performer the M6 is. Even compared to the discontinued BMW Z8 with its mere 400-hp V8, all-aluminum construction and original $128,000 MSRP, the M6 convertible is a deal. There are some big changes possibly afoot with BMW's coupe lineup. Auto Express reports that BMW will be changing the focus of the next-generation 6-Series from grand tourer to a Porsche 911 fighter. This means the 6-Series will become slightly smaller than the current model. Auto Express speculates the new 6-Series will utilize the joint BMW-Toyota platform that will underpin the next-gen Z4 and long-rumored Toyota Supra. Sources at both companies say this new platform is able to be scaled for larger models. At the moment, the proposal for the new 6-Series is for a coupe and convertible, no Gran Coupe. BMW has issued a profit warning for 2019, saying that profits will be well below last year's 7.2€ billion. The company stated that higher raw material costs, unfavorable currency exchange, and compliance with stricter emissions standards are the main causes for the profit erosion. BMW is not planning for layoffs at this time, but those could come in the future as the company moves to simplify and consolidate its product portfolio. One area that will see cuts is in powertrains. BMW plans to cut the number of engine/transmission options in half and simplify platforms in a move to streamline operations. BMW plans to reduce the development time of new vehicles by one t…

BMW Quietly Says Good Bye To The X6 ActiveHybrid William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 20, 2011 The BMW X6 is an odd vehicle; a coupe-shaped, four-door, SUV thing that appeals to small group of people. Sales in North America have reflected this and now one of its variants is being shown the door. That variant is the X6 ActiveHybrid. 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of BMW and to celebrate, the German automaker unveiled a concept that tries to predict the future of motoring. The Vision Next 100 concept features a number of new technologies in terms of how a vehicle is built, the interaction between driver and vehicle; and autonomous driving. Materials such as carbon fiber, plastic, and the residue from the production of carbon fiber make up the Vision Next 100's structure. Trademark BMW design cues such as the kidney grille and Hofmeister kink in the C-Pillar are apparent. BMW says the Vision Next 100's body is very aerodynamic with a drag coefficient of 0.18 cd. Inside the Vision Next 100…

https://www.autonews.com/buyArchives.cms?articleId=54246 BMW to produce Z4 coupe Jens Dralle AN / August 22, 2005 MUNICH, Germany -- BMW AG plans a coupe version of its Z4 roadster, according to company sources. Like its predecessor, the Z3 coupe, the new coupe will be built at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, S.C., where the roadster is produced. The decision to build the coupe is surprising. The previous model was not considered a success. During a five-year production run that ended in 2002, BMW sold fewer than 18,000 Z3 coupes

Cataloging the Past: BMW Mobile Tradition builds an “original” 2002tii from its own parts book MATT DAVIS Posted Date: 11/18/05 BMW has worked for more than a generation developing its “Ultimate Driving Machine” reputation. In 1959 its three-box body cars were the ones to have, and today the potent V10 M5 sedan carries on the tradition. Back then, though, the most sought after by enthusiasts was the 2002tii, whose designation means “Touring International (with) Injection.” Of some 39,000 2002tiis sold between 1971 and 1975, 7500 came to the States between August 1971 and December 1974. As you read this, BMW Mobile Tradition (the vintage caretakers of the marq…

BMW to sell engines to Mercedes, others Posted Oct 24th 2008 7:01PM Link to Autoblog BMW, the Munich-based German automaker, is reportedly in discussion with other automakers -- rivals in some cases -- to sell their engines and transmissions. Klaus Draeger, BMW's head of development, told Auto Motor und Sport that the automaker is in advanced talks with Mercedes-Benz about licensing engines to its Stuttgart-based competitor. Specifics have not been announced, but one likely candidate would be BMW's new V-12, set to debut in the new 7 Series and baby Rolls-Royce sedan. Mercedes would drop it under the hood of their flagship S-Class and Maybach. There was no mention…

Whether or not you care for the BMW X4 'sport activity coupe', it is a big hit around the world. To keep its popularity up, the German automaker revealed the second-generation X4 this morning. Like the X3 on which it is based, the 2019 X4 sees an increase in overall length (3 inches) and width (2 inches). Most important for those sitting in the back is the extra 2 inches between the wheels, which should help improve rear legroom. The front end is similar to the redesigned X3 with larger kidney grilles, larger air intakes, and a new design for the foglights. The back features a tailgate design similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE-Coupes. The inter…

When the next-generation BMW 3-Series comes out in a couple of years, there could be a variant missing. BMWBlog has learned from a source that the 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT) is on the chopping block. The reason is that the 3-Series GT overlaps with the 4-Series Gran Coupe and it would make sense to focus one in the future. We're not sure if many BMW customers are cross-shopping a hatchback with a four-door coupe. We're thinking that the GT didn't meet BMW's sales expectations which is possibly why it could be getting the axe. The next 3-Series is expected to debut in 2018 with sales beginning towards the end of year. Source: BMWBlog View full article

BMW unveiled the Concept iX3 at the Beijing Motor show in April of 2018. The overall look of the crossover is somewhat conventional, but with the traditional kidney grille being closed off for aerodynamic reasons and special aerodynamic wheels. The production iX3 will be rear-wheel drive only and have a peak rating of 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All of that power comes from a single motor. The motor is BMW's fifth-generation eDrive powertrain developed solely in house. BMW says that the technology used in this motor is scalable and thus can be used in different automotive segments. The battery is a 74-kWh pack that is capable of powering the iX3 fo…

Speedy BMW offers a great ride, but 3 is a crowd By Paul & Anita Lienert Parents who aren't quite ready to make the leap into a minivan may be intrigued by such hot-looking properties as the 2006 BMW 325xi. The compact German sport wagon offers style and performance, but, unfortunately, not a lot of space for new families and all the gear they have to haul once baby arrives. We tested a nicely equipped 325xi recently with such amenities as a panorama moonroof, all-wheel drive and a $2,900 premium package that included leather upholstery, power seats with driver memory and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass. Bottom line: $40,190, including destination.…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 8, 2012 Inside Line has learned from a couple of sources that the next generation Z4 will be a more dynamic sports car than previous generations of the two-seat roadster. BMW's goal is to make the next Z4 more agile and sportier to drive, but up to a point as to not upset current owners and fans. Design of the next Z4 will reflect this goal with the long front end losing a few inches. BMW will also utilize the current N20 turbocharged four-cylinder to help improve the weight distribution.
