Nissan Motor Co. Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn sought to allay fears of a protracted fall in the auto maker's sales, characterizing last month's sudden, sharp slide as a short-lived reaction to the completion in September of a highly publicized sales drive. Under its last business plan, Japan's second-biggest auto maker had promised to sell 3.6 million vehicles globally in the 12 months through September 30. With the final tally at 3.671 million, Nissan delivered on all three commitments under the "Nissan 180" plan: 1 million additional sales versus fiscal 2001, an operating margin of at least 8 percent and zero automotive debt. But in an evi…

  2. There's one disadvantage to being partially owned by the French, they know how to cut things off when they need to. We reported last week that due to lagging sales and plunging profits, Nissan was readying to layoff 12,500 employees globally, or 9% of their global workforce. It seems that other cuts are on the way as well, though we may not see as much of it here in the U.S. Along with the 9% cut in jobs will be around 10% of its global lineup as well. First to go will be the low-end models in developing markets like India. Their overseas brand Datsun could see the bulk of the cuts, but the US will lose models as well. Expect coupes and hatchbacks to be the first to…

The recall affects 1,015,306 units of the company's March and Cube subcompacts that were manufactured between 1991 and 2000, spokeswoman Pauline Kee said. The vehicles can have small cracks in the gas tanks that leak fuel fumes. Nissan will repair the problem free of charge. "It creates an uncomfortable smell," Kee said. "It's not a safety problem." Nissan expects the recall to cost 3 billion yen ($25.6 million). About 4,000 of the vehicles were sold overseas, mostly in So…

  4. Nissan's showing at last week's LA Auto Show was a bit underwhelming with mid-cycle refreshes of the Maxima and Murano. But Nissan had bigger plans for LA. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Japanese automaker was planning to show a longer-range version of the Leaf EV. The model would increase range from 151 miles to 225 miles via a larger battery pack. The Journal reports that Nissan had rented space in the Japanese American National Museum for the media unveiling and hired Hollywood actress Margot Robbie to introduce the model. But the reveal was postponed. “The official announcement regarding details of the 2019 Nissan Leaf with additional performance…

  5. A Nissan executive who has declined to be identified is upbeat about the possible FCA-Renault merger according to a report by AutoBlog. The deal, estimated at about $35 billion, would not give FCA the right to use Nissan technology via the Nissan-Renault alliance. The executive said he was optimistic about possible synergies of using Nissan's green and electric vehicle know-how in other vehicles. He also raised the possibility that Nissan could increase its stake, currently 15%, in Renault or FCA-Renault. Without increasing their stake, Nissan's share of the resulting company would be cut to 7.5%. FCA-Renault however, would continue to hold 43.4% of Nissan. …

  10. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 25, 2013 Nissan was riding high when the announcement came that their NV Taxi would become New York City's Taxi of Tomorrow last year. Since then, Nissan has been under a barrage of attacks. The latest setback comes from New York Supreme Court Justice Peter Moulton who ruled one part of Nissan's and New York's Taxi & Limousine Commission agreement is "null, void and unenforceable". That part is from the Taxi of Tomorrow requirements which asked for a vehicle to be a hybrid - something the NV200 doesn't meet. Nissan reportedly will buy V8 diesel engines from International Truck and Engine Corp. Sources also tell Bloomberg that prosecutors are planning to bring new charges against Ghosn. Why? 1) The car culture in Southern California is second-to-none in this country. 2) Trend-setting is also second-to-none (maybe along with New York) in this country. 3) Southern California is an automotive dynamo with numerous different manufacturers having their N.A. headquarters here and most also have design studios here (GM even has one in North Hollywood.) 57. It was only a few short weeks ago Nissan released their first teaser of the Pathfinder concept, set to debut at the ever approaching Detroit Auto Show. Now Nissan has decided the time is right to release two more teasers, each revealing the and of the vehicle. Each video only lasts a few seconds each, but they reveal everything you need to see if you were wondering what the front and rear of last month's shadowy profile shot would look like. It's also worth noting that the three-section grille of the current Nissan trucks has evolved into something a little more staid on the Pathfinder concept, which is turning out to be a lazily disguised version of what will go on …

The Chevy Cobalt, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Honda Odyssey take top honors for having the fewest toxins, while the Nissan Versa, Chevy Aveo and Scion xB are the worst offenders. The tests isolate toxins like, arsenic, bromine, chlorine and mercury, found in everything from the carpet to the dash board, but the Ecology Center didn't identify what the degree of risk is wh…

According to The Detroit Bureau, the automaker is considering options on broadening the appeal of the model. One of those options is giving the Maxima the NISMO treatment. “We’re trying to gauge reaction to the car,” said 2016 Nissan Maxima product planner Vishnu Jayamohan. “We have our NISMO brand which would be a great outlet for this car.” Going with the NISMO model would allow Nissan to expand on the sporty and performance message they are going with the new Maxima. 65. You would think that Nissan has forgotten about the 370Z, considering not much has been done to it in some time. But the Japanese automaker wants to make it clear they haven't forgotten about their sports car. They have been quietly working on the next-generation model. Last night, Nissan introduced the Z Proto which is a thinly-veiled concept of the next-generation model, possibly named 400Z due out within the next few years. You will instantly recognize the Z Proto as being part of the Z family. Nissan's designers draw quite heavily from the original 240Z up front as evidenced by the hood, teardrop-shaped LED headlamps (only available on Japanese-market 240), and squ…

The Rock Creek comes with 235/65R17 Falken Wild Peak all-terrain tires, Hill Descent Control, a tubular roof rack, updated facia with red accents, and water-repellent leatherette seats. The Murano has always been a crossover with more curvaceous lines than the rest of its peers and this new version is no exception. As it was so soon after the NY Auto Show, I was caught off guard today during a trip from Indianapolis, IN to Columbus, OH by these two 2015 Murano prototypes cruising on I-70 with no camouflage. The silver one looked fairly complete and wearing all of its trim, while the black one had clearly been taped up with plastic previously and was missing several exterior trim pieces. Last year, the buyouts attracted 775 workers, though the payout at that time was just $45k plus an additional $500 for each year of service. This time, the lump sum starts at a heady $100k. Not surprisingly, Nissan is expecting more people to take the package this year than last. In fact, Nissan spokesman Fred Standish says that "market realities" …

Sticking with the same 5.6L V8 engine and the choice of either a extended or crew cab means the Titan hasn't set the sales charts on fire. Sales last year for Titan totaled 21,576, a far cry from the nearly 87,000 sales in 2005, its best year. But with the 2015 Titan, Nissan is hoping the new model will become a contender. Announced this week, Kelly Blue Book forecasts that after three years, a 2013 Nissan Leaf will retain 35 percent of its original sticker price.
