  1. GM may reopen some factories to meet higher demand By TOM KRISHER, AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher, Ap Auto Writer – 1 hr 5 mins ago DETROIT – General Motors Co. may reopen some shuttered factories because it can't produce certain vehicles fast enough, its North American president said Monday. Mark Reuss told reporters at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that plants building the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX crossover vehicles and the Buick LaCrosse sedan are at capacity and can't satisfy demand. Reuss mentioned an idled factory in Spring Hill, Tenn., but stopped short of saying any plants would be reopened. He said if he …

In a statement released by the UAW, the bargaining committee “secured significant gains and job security protections” in its negotiations with GM. “We believe that this agreement will present stable long-term significant wage gains and job security commitments to UAW members now and in the future. Oldest Customer of 2010 Camaro [source: General Motors] When most people retire they take up golfing, but 101 year old Virgil Coffman is living life in the fast lane. The active centenarian recently became the oldest known living owner of a new 2010 Camaro. Despite initial concern from the sales associate, Coffman knew exactly what he wanted when he purchased the 400 horsepower, bright yellow, Transformers edition Camaro. Impressed by the overall design, Virgil was ultimately sold on the cars' easy handling. After owning nearly 40 cars in his lifetime, he follows the philosophy that if you want something, get it. GM had more than 6,000 dealerships at the end of last year, and in the initial viability plan it offered to the government, the automaker pledged to close 25% of those over the next five years. As with the rest of the plan, the Auto Task Force said "That isn't enough." So GM has turned the big guns on its dealership closures, having seen 200 of them shut down this year already. In those tweets he says he has spoken to GM CEO Mary Barra about his displeasure over the closing of the facility. He said he demanded swift action on either the selling of the plant or reopening it. He further stated the Ms. Barra blamed the UAW for the closure. In a further series of tweets, Trump mentioned that GM and the UAW will be starting talks in September of this year, but that he is impatient with that timeline. Claiming that we have one of the best economies in history, he wants to see the plant opened or sold to another car company. While Lordstown has…

I know a while back it was reported that GM drivetrain was told by Bob Lutz he had their back and to work their magic. The numbers we have been hearing on many many engines are on the low side of what we are about to see. I 4 engines of at least 300 HP, V6 engines of 300 + and V8 engines of 420-700+ HP are in our future from all indications. With a new Northstar and LS3 coming these are all wee really know but indications are we can expect some suprises with engines and in HP in the next Few years up…

Before we begin, let us state clearly that this is speculation by Karl Denninger at The Market Ticker. Examining the various stakeholders' interests in General Motors, Denninger has come up with a scenario that supposes GM's bondholders might actually want the automaker to file for bankruptcy. The bondholders appear to be the biggest obstacle to restructuring. They're not allowing GM to reach its government-mandated target for debt reduction because they would lose much of their investment in the process. According to Denninger, however, the biggest and most savvy of those bondholders could get 100% of their investment back if GM files for bankruptcy. Those bondholders …

Deal on the table is $1500 from GM Card, $500 for previous GM owner, $470 for loyalty (I may have switched up those last two). Not bad, but could it be better (of course, he'll cross-shop dealerships)?

Miller said he is following up on this and will report more later. He said he needed to shake out more info on it this week from team members in both series. I know this one comes up every few months and there is most likley nothing here as usaual, but it is the first time I have heard that race teams are passing the word around on this topic. Hmmm can you imagine a GM leader racing Dodge's, Porsche and Honda. GM could give him some token C6R's as a signing bonus.

car connection "A new report from Merrill Lynch suggests that GM has been investing too little in new products for a long time and it isn't clear that even in the present crisis, the auto giant is prepared to change. "We believe GM will continue its historical pattern of underinvesting in product to the detriment of earnings and stock price," noted a new research report from John Murphy, Merrill Lynch's new auto analyst. "GM's market share losses are not new news. The company's consistent underinvestment is the primary driver of its consistent market share losses," the report says."

Well duh. Anyone even vaguely familiar with GM’s current crisis knows there’s only one thing the General needs right now: vehicles that people want to buy, at a price that makes the company a profit. This they don’t have. And guess what? Neither does Nissan. The Japanese automaker’s sales are also in freefall, pending new product coming down the pike. That trend ended this past week as GM announced the recall of 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera utility vehicles built from 2005 to 2013 and are equipped with the 2.5L and 2.0L engines. The reason? According to India's Economic Times via Automotive News, GM employees deliberately fudged emission inspections to meet the standards. "Over a period of time some employees of the company engaged in the practice of identifying engines with lower emission which were fine-tuned and kept aside to be used for installation on vehicles during inspection," said GM in a …

Jamie LaReau Automotive News July 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — General Motors is allowing U.S. employees the opportunity, through July, to offer an employee discount to any one person they choose. The program is not as broad as GM's 2005 Employee Discount for Everyone event. It's an effort to boost sales, talk up GM products and clear inventory, a company spokesman said Friday. An employee discount provides substantial savings. For example, a Buick Lucerne with a sticker price of $34,200 would have an employee price of $29,758.03 after cash incentives, said a GM spokesman.
