  1. So I hop back on syty.net (My rare visit to the site) to see a post about my old GMC Syclone up for sale in NY. I owned #1616 from '97-'01 and sold it with 33k on the clock. It now has 43k and the guy had it listed at $8500. I emailed him last night to find out it was already sold. Damn the luck!

I found a red, 1985 Camaro setting not to far from home yesterday. It's been slightly modified with a front fascia from a early '90s Camaro, which needs paint, and a hood from an IROC-Z, which needs the hinges fixed. Other than the two hiccups I pointed out (I'm not making much mention of the upholstery, which is only torn in one or two places, which I don't much care about, and the missing headliner, which you don't notice because of the t-tops), the car is very solid, is rust and ding free, and, except for the bumper, has great paint with plenty of sheen. Now, on the door handles I noticed a few interesting anomalies that read "Turbo." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, bu…

  4. Me, the wife & kids got in the AURA yesterday around 2:15 PM and decided to head-up to NYC. We usually go before Christmas every year and typically for the whole day, but as we're getting older and have more to do, we're finding it harder to make the time to get there before the holidays. A very long 3 hours later (normally a 1.5 hour trip - too much traffic on the NJ Turnpike, a 40-minute wait to get into the Lincoln Tunnel, and traffic backups on all NYC streets should have made me turn around!), we're parking the car and walking around Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and on Fifth Avenue (a stop at the World of Disney NYC was a must). We ate at Planet Hollywood…

You are walking around a corner or going down the aisle and you almost run into / come face-to-face with a person who has a disease which has disfigured them, have been severely burned or subjected to some other tragedy that has markedly altered their appearance. Because of the fact that you were taken off guard and you were hurrying about, you would have ordinarily tried to be very composed, but I think that what happens is that you may make eye contact and then look away a little TOO quickly. You wind up feeling real bad. But you also know that others, in similar circumstances, may have reac…

I had an awesome time last week/weekend! I'm glad I accepted Rob's generous offer to drive me back'n'forth; it was great to get away. Believe it or not, I only took 2 pictures (see below). I'm not sure why I didn't take more DURING the drives; maybe because I was enjoying the scenery too much. I didn't take more pictures AT the MC Nats because it was TOO hot to stand in the sun long enough to take pictures. Besides, others took pictures of the event. Award winners: http://www.montecarl…

Ahh- the smell of model cement !! I spent some time as a kid building plastic models- if any of us hasn't, I'd be surprised. I built maybe 15. When I moved out, my mom tossed 'em all off my 3-tier shelf- I wasn't really upset I suppose. I do have a half dozen of the boxes, as they were usually packed with odds-n-ends; them, I still have. I don't think we've done a thread on this, so perhaps some pics of some favorites would be interesting. Some of mine I built (via Google): The Tom Daniels stuff was fantastic. Others were mostly classics- '30s-40s stuff, nothing from the '50s/60s. Anyone else?

Sometimes my "soft spot" gets affected and I will throw the remaining change or that rare dollar bill into the jar when I go up to the counter at a Starbucks or a pizza place. Tips are for table service. Until the last 5 or 10 years, I rarely saw tip jars at places where you walk up to get your coffee, tea, sandwich or pizza. Now they are everywhere. I don't really dig it and, if you use a credit card, there's that space for a tip that you either fill in or zero out in front of them. Talk about being put on the spot. But the decal was never removed, and the truck was shipped off to Turkey before it somehow ended up in the hands of ISI…

  40. WTF, right? Check it: >>"For luxury cars with very high sticker prices, depreciation claims more money than it does for mass-market models that cost a lot less to begin with. That's true even for luxury models that retain their value very well. Over five years, the Porsche 911 GT3 — the tenth most expensive car to own — depreciates just 41% from its starting MSRP. By contrast, the Lincoln MKZ, the 10th least expensive-to-own luxury model, sheds about 67% of its base price. But the MKZ sells for around $30,000, compared to $106,000 for the 911 GT3. 67% of $30,000 is a lot less than 41% of $106,000 — that works out to $20,100 versus $43,460, respectively."<< …

MOMBASA, Kenya -- U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday. My wife's company is headquartered in Denmark (it's a pharmacutical company). She was asked to attend a workshop there for several days next week (Sept 23-27). She asked what I'd like for her to bring me back, and I couldn't really think of anything until this morning. Depending on what brand of GM vehicles are sold there (i.e. Vauxhall, Opel), I'd like a brochure from them (I'm a cheap person to get gifts for at times). She'll have time to tour the city and will be taken around by someone she knows from Denmark that comes to the States often at her work, so they should know where to find these dealerships. Any help???

  72. Here she is, XP48; the one of a kid Cadillac Eldorado Brougham town car made for the 1956 Motorama. I'd seen this thing a long time ago in a book and had almost forgotten about it until I opened up this month's issue of Hemming's Motor News and saw it in the auctions section. I can't believe this thing escaped the crusher at the legendary Warhoops Salvage Yard where Lord knows how many other priceless concepts were squished into a cube. XP48: The 1956 Motorama Cadillac Eldorado Brougham town car I need to see this thing in person before i die.

  74. http://www.proximityhotel.com/ My GF and her classmate's project for architecture this semester was to coordinate with the owner of this hotel (He owns multiple hotels and fronts a foundation for community improvement) and basically re-design a large part of downtown Greensboro NC. Yesterday, we had her final critique at The Proximity which included him, the other big members of the foundation and several key people in the leadership of the city. Of course, as far as we know, everything was theoretical, but it would provide a very good and complete basis if the foundation wanted to move forward with plans. The foundation funded everything, from trips to Greensboro …

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did, and maybe it will help you take life a little slower and with more meaning. In July 2006, a short 3-minute movie was launched on the Internet called The Dash. Since then, over 40 million people from around the world have watched it, and over 20,000 a day continue to watch it as a result of people passing it along. The movie has been more successful than anyone could have ever imagined. More importantly, however, it has inspired many, many people to reflect on their lives and ask that all important question, 'Are my priorities where they should be?' I leave you with this movie and I hope you share it with those who are close to…

When I owned my '07 Saturn SKY, it was involved in an accident in November. The tire and rim were cosmetically damaged and were replaced during the repairs. I kept the original tire & rim and now want to sell them to raise some needed cash. The tire saw 495 miles as of the accident, and very little additional mileage until it was replaced. It has held air with no problems the 6 years its been in storage in my basement. Here are some recent pictures: Honestly, what do you think I could sell the tire & rim for? I was thinking $250, but not sure if that is too high or too low?

There are cars and trucks that are ugly, slow and/or impractical. They might have cheap interiors or suck at handling. They could also be obscenely overpriced or blandest thing on four wheels. You may just plain not like them as of course, taste and priorities vary from person to person. In fact, as I'm typing this, I'm thinking the question of what is a bad car may be both subjective and objective as weird as it sounds. So I guess I have a two-part question here: -Do you see the issue of "bad cars" as being subjective, objective or something in between? -Based on that, are any "bad cars" made today?

Saturday afternoon, I stopped to get gas before I left town for Freeport IL to see some friends for dinner. The gallons (after almost a week of driving) was 7.729 for $17.00. On the way back home late Saturday night, I thought about getting gas, but decided I'd just get gas today (Sunday) after I did some running around. So, today, I stopped at Walmart, stopped at a no-touch car wash to get the '87 MC LS washed, drove a bit to help dry it off a bit more, then stopped for gas. After I got back home and started inputting the figures into my "gas book", I was stunned to discover that the gallons and dollar amount were exactly the same as yesterday's ... 7.729 gallons for…

In regards to milage of the Civic in thier long term test. Here's what I sent, let's see if they post it in their next issue... "Was reading through the long term test of the '06 Honda Civic on page 172 of the Aug. '06 issue. The gas milage and current MT average of 24 mpg got me thinking of my fiance's 6 year old 183,000 mile Oldsmobile Alero. Now here's a car (the Civic) that made car of the year with all it's new tech yet get's 24 mpg average. Now I do understand that being a test vehicle that it is surely to be driven harder than normal and would get a bit better mpg otherwise, however I've been a bit hard on the Alero at times and the worse mpg we've ever seen from…

Now that I'm getting close to leaving North America for Europe, I started thinking about all the assembly plants that I have had some sort of connection with that are no longer here. I was thinking about all those jobs that were lost and the people I knew that worked in those plants. The following plants were more special to me than others. Arlington Assembly plant, TX - Where I started my GM career, it's still there. Terrytown Assembly plant, NY - Actually in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Beautiful place to be in the fall with the leaves changing color, the plant was along the Hudson river. Linden Assembly plant, NJ - Always in my mind as the S10 plant, I truely miss the people…

My computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 running on Windows XP. I haven't had any issues with viruses, spam, spyware, or even pop-ups since I've had it. However, I attempted to download a setup program on LimeWire earlier tonight and have since been bombarded by spam, spyware, and endless pop-ups. My desktop background has been replaced by "Active Desktop Recovery", and my system has been running extremely slowly and freezes often. I ran Ad-Aware, which found over 250 "Critical Objects", many of which were considered High-Risk threats. Usually the program is able to remove (or quarantine) everything without a problem, but tonight, several can't be removed. I've remove…

Well, I tried to give Chrysler my money on one of the Jeep Commanders...but it keeps letting us down. It has failed - in the garage - THREE times now. Exact same issue: The battery completely drains after the car is left for 12 hours or more. The first time, it was jumped through roadside assistance (so it would be documented) and we drove it to the dealership. Everything tested fine, so we took it home. Three months later, dead. Towed it to the dealership. They claimed the battery was more than likely discharged by the cell phone charger in the outlet and told us to eliminate the cell phone charger - as 'this happens all the time'...I asked the guy nicely if the …

The question: What cars & when used the E-Body? Don't start typing yet.... I believe a huge degree of confusion comes from those who confuse body designations with chassis designations, which are usually the same folk who want to call all BOF chassis' "platforms" as if they were unibodies. Chassis's, or frames, were NOT designated by the same body letter codes. The B-Body Buick rode a completely different chassis/frame than a B-Body Pontiac in 1960, for example. And FRAMES ARE NOT 'PLATFORMS' !!! "Buick introduces the prestige, E-body based, Riviera, as a 1963 model." --( http://www.gm.com/company/corp_info/history/gmhis1960.html ) "There was styling, of course: …

C&G has been my home on the net for a few years now and it's good to be back. In early October my trusty Toshiba laptop took a fall and died a horrible death, and as such I've been without a computer since then. But my misery of being without a keyboard at my finger tips and C&G before my eyes has come to an end, today I bought a brand new HP Pavilion. Now I'm not a computer savy guy so I'll try to explain the specs as best as I can, it has 5GB memory and a 640GB hard drive, AMD Phenom X4 processor and an Nvidia graphics card. The package also came with a 22'' HP monitor which can swivel and rotate. I'm still trying to get used to it going from a laptop and g…

I work in a medium sized architectural firm and, in addition to our local drive, we download other stuff (such as our drawings and such) from a server. I also have a flash drive or thumb drive that I use up at the university at night and on weekends when I do crap for my night classes. Thus far, I have never had problems with a file on my flash drive. Interestingly enough, I got a message on the flash drive while at work, after a crash, that said "Volume is dirty." (Now, I do insert my flash drive, carried on my key ring, into my work computer to work on papers during breaks and on my lunch hour.) Lately, my computer has been crashing anywhere from 1 to 3 times a…

  100. This is the 2nd of 3 July 4th themed UDG threads I had planned. Just wasn't able to get them all up before the 4th. Since we won our independence from the British, it seems fitting that we have a Dream Garage dedicated to our tyrant turned ally. In matching our American one, this one will allow 10 choices. Rules- 1) British makes ONLY. 2) Any era is allowed. 3) You are allowed ONE concept/one-off choice. 4) You are also allowed ONE racecar/non-street legal choice. 5) You MUST have at least ONE off-road/SUV choice. 6) Maximum of 10 vehicles. That's it, enjoy!!
