With all the recent talk about bailing out General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, I wonder if America ever had to call on the foreign makes as we did GM during World War II, would they respond anything like this.... As it was put to me: "When America needed GM most, GM was there, when GM needs America most, will we do the same?" Thoughts...

It seems like everyone are now pushing out playing MP3s from CDs, some with DVD support. Seeing Infiniti and Chrysler starting to push out radios with hard drives, that does sound like the way to go. Automotive systems seems to be gettin more sophisticated as well, but Delphi seems to be slow on these technologies. Well, I have some ideas which I thought about, and probably I'll realize one as my fourth year project: 1. Removable portable storage for multimedia and driver's information This system will consist of a removable storage, e.g. USB key, flash card, etc., that plugs into the console. The new G35 has this. My idea is to have a multifunction USB key that att…

"Members of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) say they've noticed a significant increase in traumatic foot and ankle injuries among patients who survived auto accidents. The reason? Air bags. …" "'We see trauma we never saw before,' says ACFAS President James L. Thomas, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle trauma surgeon at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Hospital. 'A decade ago, these patients would have died from head trauma or other upper body injuries. Now, thanks to seat belts and air bags, they survive.'" Such a dramatic headline just so foot and ankle surgeons can put a spotlight on the great work they do and justify a big increase in both …

This has been the month of Januray: Cold...wait 3 days...Cold with 20 mph winds (high tems in the teens, wind chills in the negatives)...wait three days...6 inches of snow...wait 6 days...high temps in the 50's...wait 3 days...high temps in the 60's...wait 3 days...monsoon...wait 3 days...back to being cold (and windy, but not nearly as bad as earlier in the month)...wait 3 days...6 inches of snow I'm almost certain that I have lived 3 of the 4 seasons in the last 29 days. Even better, people here do stupid $h! whilst driving in the snow. For example, today I was at a red light, the light turned green, so I went on my merry way, some guy driving a Magnum on the cross …

The President spoke at a meeting today at the hotel just north of the office building where i work today. Literally a couple hundred feet or less away. The point where they brought him in the building was across from the north side of our floor which I work on. So we spent a good deal of the afternoon waiting to see the motorcade arrive and leave. He drives into a tent and they close the tent so the general public cannot see what's going on. Personally, I get the feeling they have some Famous Dave's barbeque under the tent that all the security forces and GW were snacking on. There was less of a visible force than I imagined there would be, but who knows, maybe th…

TEEN DRIVER CRASHES POSE GREATEST THREAT TO OTHER ROAD USERS, ACCORDING TO AAA FOUNDATION ANALYSIS AAA Auto Club South To Focus Advocacy Efforts on Strengthening Florida’s Teen Driver Safety Law TAMPA, FL (January 18) - The majority of people killed in teen driver crashes are people other than the teen drivers themselves, according to a recent analysis of ten years of crash data by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The new analysis shows that young novice drivers comprise slightly more than one-third of all the fatalities in crashes in which they are involved; whereas nearly two-thirds of those killed are other vehicle users and pedestrians. Skip over this content Feddor is not a rogue city driver. He's the holder of a unique license plate number that became the target of a Chicago Department of Revenue glitch, the Chicago Tribune reported. It turns out parking attendants had been using the number 0 as a test case for new electronic ticketing devices. They had no idea that 0 was an actual assigned plate number nor that it belonged to Feddor and that he was receiving the phony tickets…

I was running errands and also popped into a Chevy dealership. They were refreshingly nice. I asked about 08s and there weren't too many on the lots. I then asked how much the extended warranty would be. Now, keeping in mind that the powertrain warranty is 5/100, the extended warranty for everything else to go 6/90 with a $100 deduct nudges $1,500 for a basic Impala 3.5 and $1,400 if you do the $200 deduct. Yikes...I was expecting $1,000 to $1,100. I bought the extended warranty for my Regal when there was basic 3/36. It was the 6/72 and it cost me about $ 700. What's the deal? I mean, the powertrain is now up to 5/100. Why so much for the balance? Is this…

This topic is simply your voice on telling Joe and Jane Camcord buyers of better alternatives than the frequently selected Camry and Accord. Make your argument for xx car is better than Camry and Accord and why. There is no limit to your suggestions other than it should be a comparable type sedan in a similar price range with similar functional value and size / features. Tell us what car, model approx price and how its configured. The idea with this thread is to educate potential buyers about all the other great cars available in the camcord or similar segment(s) that people are missing out on by blindly gravtitating toward to those perennial best sellers.

Well, I got a major surprise today. My brakes went out on me-during the lunch rush..... Lucky for me I made a turn down a side street to avoid a traffic back up. Everything had been fine all day-but when the wagon hit the first stop sign- I didn't stop-and just missed avoiding a person backing out of their driveway- I just about had a heart attack. After getting it to stop (it had a little stopping power left after that), I limped it to my folks house. (where I was on my way to) I came out and checked it a few minutes later-and there was a small puddle and fluid all over my passenger tire I had it towed away to the local shop...and my guess I either lost the h…

In the 60's and 70's my parents collected Beetles like they were going out of style. My dad and a friend of his could yank an engine, tear it down, reassemble and throw it back in the car in no time. Eventually having kids caught up and my dad hasn't owned one in years. Cut to 2007. Let's start by saying that I love my GTI. Maybe I'm not as smitten with it as I was when I bought it, but I still genuinely like the car a lot. Generally, when I've had a car for nearly a year, the attraction has waned like the lover you forced yourself to marry because of the accidental child your loins produced. This isn't the case this go around likely due to the fact that it's not a Toyota Avalon. Oh, the embarrassment of telling people you bought a Toyota Avalon at the age of 23... I can't wait to become the average age of the typical Avalon buyer just so I can forget about actually buying one. That car, however, did have one thing going for it: Guaranteed reliab…

One day, when the great automotive enthusiast in the sky allows me to win the lottery, this would make a great racing circuit for all of Pa's enthusiasts and its visitors to enjoy. Think of it as our version of the Nurburgring. Unofficially 21.5 miles long, its filled with a little bit of everything. The northern section is very technical and winds through a nice hilly area. Many 90 degree turns, successive switch-backs, and blind curves. There is an awesome portion that winds around a cemetery as it suddenly drops into a valley; a favorite of mine. The southern section is more high speed based with more straights, beginning and ending with tight, near 180 degree turns. A…

I drove here from Houston in the new Vue. Took two 12 hour days to get here but it was worth seeing some fall foliage. I'm heading back through Kentucky and then down through Atlanta over the next 2 days (to visit more family). Lots of GM's up in this area, kind of interesting to see. The Vue is running great - but I can only get the heater to work if I turn it all the way to 85 - cold air otherwise. Very weird. Anywho...I knocked off 2 more elusive states on the way (Missouri and Indiana) - I have 9 more to go and I've been to all 50. Nothing like Neil Young during an autumn Missouri sunset on I-55 heading into Illinois.

Talking about my trip to China in the other thread: Buick bucks the trend reminded me of a question I had for Josh, or rather a kind of challenge. A crane toppled over at one of our job sites today, crushing a Silverado, part of a Sierra, sheared off a corner of the contractor office, and flattened half of a guard shed. Amazingly, nobody was injured even though workers were in both buildings. The boom crane that fell was being used to erect two larger tower cranes (taken a couple hours before it tipped over).

It was a UPS Dodge Caravan. What was so odd was that all of it's badges were removed. I wonder what's up with that.

More and more I see guys that are in their mid 30s and up, on skateboards and they often look slightly foolish to me. It seems like a young person's thing...am I wrong in this?....just a fun topic to see how you all see this.

I have seen a total of 3 GM ads since I've came back to the USA 9 days ago. The sad thing is, one was for the the Cadillac Escalade, the other was for the GMC Acadia, both these ads were on TV, the other add I saw was for the Pontiac G8, it was an internet ad. These are not the vehicles GM needs to be pushing in the days of 4 bucks a gallon gas, which is surely to go higher. They should be showing ads that show GM vehicles that get 30 mpg or more, once again GM shoots itself in the foot.

John K. Teahen Jr. Automotive News November 26, 2007 - 12:01 am ET I've read it in the newspapers; I've heard it on the radio; I've seen it on TV. It's great news, the best in years. But I don't believe it. The headlines say, "Detroit 3 back on track" and "New contract puts Detroit back in the ballgame." Not quite. Not by a long shot. I'm not knocking the new labor contracts. They're excellent, and they certainly will help General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC as they claw their way back toward respectability. The contracts cut Detroit's manufacturing, overhead and labor costs. I hope they will help GM, Ford and Chrysler overcome their staggering…

Here's a commentary piece that was in the Iowa State Daily yesterday I thought I'd share. It's a reminder that Americans take so much for granted that many others in less free societies would die for. http://media.www.iowastatedaily.com/media/...m-3017244.shtml

The above photo was snagged from Reddit where the owner installed the side stripes to cover some superficial damage which got me thinking: what would you do if you scratched your MX-5 (not necessarily the new 2016 but any gen)? If you’ve got the time it’d be cool to see what you’d do to cover up a slight scratch. Oh, and please answer even if you don’t have a Mazda, aMiata or even if you don’t have a car at all. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LR6M6HM

OK, in the past few months, there's this woman who constantly keeps calling my mobile phone number, and looking for a non-existant person. I've told her tons of times that there's no such person, yet she just says "sorry", hangs up, then a while later (weeks or sometimes hours later) she calls again. I tried everything. Disconnect the call immediately when I see the caller ID, explain there's no such person, the person gave you the wrong number, everything. Nothing seems to stop it. The most irritating part is that I'm in Waterloo, and I'm paying roaming fees, because my phone is registered in Toronto. Anyway to deal with this other tha…

Sorry to say that I will not be visiting the site for about a week. Tomorrow night we're flying to Orlando for a 5-day vacation to DisneyWorld. Pray that the rain predicted for the East Coast doesn't ruin my 1 year-old's first trip to Disney I'll be thinking of the site while I'm gone - wondering what I'm missing. But on the flip side I will be going on the GM Test Track ride as much as possible ( )and will probably spend quite a bit of money in its gift shop before I leave. Can't wait to see what GM has on display there (I'm praying the new 2007 Sierra is there). Take care folks and see you in about a week!

My pacemaker was replaced on Monday, February 12, 2007, a day before ACHA's Lobby Day in Washington DC, at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Since the location was switched from my abdomin to my left-side chest area [the original wires are blocked by scarring from the 2003 surgery, causing the old pacemaker/battery to work harder/longer], I stayed overnight. They put the new pacemaker in my chest ... and then decided to take me to the OR to remove the old pacemaker, since it was under the muscle tissue. Luckily, I do not remember waking up with the breathing tube down my throat this time. I made it home safely, thanks to Mom and Dad, on Tuesday, despite Chicag…

We're going with a couple of err....couples this time around. Each pairing will have a lesser, more usable option and high performance sports/super car option. However, there's a catch. There is a delta between each of those respective options. So, would you rather.... Combo 1- Cadillac CTS 3.6 (trim, drive and options of your choice) C7 Corvette Z06 (body style, trims, and trans of your choice) OR Combo 2- Ford Focus SE (body style and powertrain of your choice) Ford GT
