Lincoln took the wraps of their MKZ Concept to be shown tomorrow at the North American International Auto Show. This is a styling exercise over top of what will eventually be the production version of the MKZ. At the time of this posting, no power train details have been released, but if you pick from any of Ford's larger EcoBoost 4 cylinders, the hybrid announced for the new Ford Fusion, and a V6, in front wheel and all wheel drive configurations, you'll see the general shape of things under the hood. We'll have more for you from the Lincoln press conference tomorrow. In the meantime, dive in and dish on the press photos below. View full article

From Inside Line This is the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Though Mitsu has lightly disguised it as the Prototype X concept car for the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, this turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedan is the Evo X. No doubt about it. We're so sure about it that we'll just refer to the Prototype X as the next Evo X for the rest of this report. Few production cars are as focused or as frenetic as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Since 1992, the all-wheel-drive Evo has displayed its winning magic not only in the World Rally Championship for which it was created but also on open roads from London to Los Angeles. It's even a must-have machine in the virtual world of Gr…

I really can't stand the new Eclipse. The design is all over the place and the rear just looks rediculous (including the clear plastic and chrome spoiler) but cut the roof off the damn thing and there you have the largest, most dis-porportionate, ugliest rear-end design ever on a car (my opinion). It looks like the front end of this car should be pointing up with all that weight in the rear. Ugh. This is a car company I wouldn't have missed if they retreated from the US market last year.

Mitsubishi Motors Introduces Next-Generation 2008 Lancer December 11, 2006 -- Cypress, Calif. -- Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) will introduce, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, the all-new, 2008 Lancer compact sport sedan, delivering driven-to-thrill dynamics, "class-up" value, advanced safety and available cutting-edge user-technology in an aggressively styled package. The new-generation Lancer models arrive in Mitsubishi dealerships in early 2007. The 2008 Lancer brings the bold, dynamic lines of the show-stopping Mitsubishi Concept-X to the showroom. First shown in 2005, the stunning Concept X previewed not only the next …

Photos of Jaguar's new C-XF concept leaked today, less than two weeks ahead of its official unveiling. As the name implies, the C-XF is a concept version of the forthcoming XF sedan. The XF will replace the S-Type in 2008, for the 2009 model year. The C-XF has the same 400 horsepower 4.2-liter V8 as the S-Type R. The production model will be offered with a wide range of powerplants, similar to the existing S-Type. The production model will have a less sloped roofline, since the XF is intended to compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, rather than the Mercedes CLS. Gallery after the jump… This looks damn good to me, sorta like an Aston Martin.

Finally made it up there today, the last day opened. Now I have been at every show since the late '90s except two, one being last year because I sprang my ankle the day before we were going to go. I gotta say the econonmy's toll really showed at this years show. Of course we all heard about Porshe, Mitsu, and Nissan/Infinite not making it to the show but Wow, never thought I'd see exibits upstairs that I was used to seeing downstairs. Also in the main lobby before walking into the show there used to be cell companies and radio stations lined up in the area's were you entered into the main show form the lobby. Those area's were blank. And when one went down stairs to were …

Well, I just got back to southern California after spending three whole days at NAIAS and I wanted to share my thoughts, for better or for worse, and see if anyone agrees/disagrees with me...... My overall feeling was that, with a few exceptions (Camaro, et al) I am more and more (unfortunately) convinced that General Motors and Ford, if they continue on their current course, will be a fraction of the entities they are even today. There were some bright spots so let me talk about those first....... Buick Enclave - I voted it best-in-show (even over Camaro) and most-significant of the domestic companies. It's simply as beautiful in person as it was in pictures and if…

Since having attended 10 of these in the last 12 years I thought I'd throw some opinions of this year. First off, it was better than last year by a bit (can it get worse than last year?). Porsche was back (woo hoo!). Guess we'll see Nissan Infinite next season. Mercedes was letting people sit in their vehicles again. GM booth was back to 2 levels again, but still not back to where the booth was in the early '00's (same with Ford). Was kinda hoping the show would've gotten moved out toward Novi back when there was discussions about it (rather drive up to Novi vs downtown - not a big deal though). Getting more and more in love with Audi every year. They went from bland a…

sent this in a PM to a fellow C&Ger last week. thought i'd post for those that are interested. ......show was good. my dad and i went with a colleage of mine from work. i drove my dad's 2003 Benneville SLE there and back. we stayed in windsor and took the windsor transit over on saturday morning. we were at cobo at 8:30. it was packed. there was a huge line for ticket holders to get in and a separate line to buy tickets. i jumped in ticket holder line while the rest bought tickets (my friend's nephew lives in windsor so he tagged along as well). by the time 9am rolled around there were several lines of ticket holders. it was really quite a mess. i should…

Yesterday I was able to go to NAIAS for the Industry Preview. Overall, it was a pretty small show as expected. Nothing really glamorous or exciting. Ford had a pretty nice display, and the whole show was nice for what the industry is going through right now. However, again, there wasn't a lot of pizzazz, not much new, just kind of a bunch of dealerships in one place with a few concepts. I can't complain though; nobody in the industry has money to throw something new out there. It was definitely weird to not see Saab, Saturn, Hummer, and Lamborghini (among others who were missing) this year. I was pretty impressed by the setup in the basement. The pictures turned out terr…

NAIAS 2011 - 2012 Volkswagen Passat DETROIT - Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off the all new 2012 Passat. Unlike the European market Passat, which is a refresh of the outgoing model sold here, this new model was designed specifically for the US market and will be the first vehicle to be produced at VW's brand new Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. In VW's relentless quest to become number 1, this new Passat is aimed at US buyers by riding on a 110.4-inch wheelbase, making it larger than any of its predecessors and in line with the likes of the Camry and Accord. The big story though is the new base price. Starting at under $20,000, the new car is some $8,000 cheaper t…

2012 Volkswagen Passat The Real Americanized German Sedan January 18th, 2011 Cory Wolfe - Writer/Photographer - CheersandGears.com Gallery - NAIAS 2011 - 2012 Volkswagen Passat One week ago, Volkswagen debuted their all-new 2012 Passat at this years North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This midsize sedan, slated to begin production around August, will be built at Volkswagen's, similarly all-new, plant in Chattanooga, TN. You may recall Volkswagen's new 6th generation Jetta having been "Americanized" for our market. In layman's term, they decontented it in a massive cost-cutting strategy to position it at the core of the compact segment. Essenti…

Buick What we've learned January 13th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - Chief Editor - CheersandGears.com There were very few (any?) surprises at the North American Auto Show in Detroit this year, however not all was lost. GM included me in a series of group interviews with various executives, engineers, and product planners throughout the first day of the show. This write up will focus on two of those discussions. The first of these 2 groups was with Ed Welburn - Vice President of General Motors Design and the second group was with Jim Federico - Executive Director - Global Vehicle Line. I will jump around between these two discussions because we covered a lot of similar sub…

INTERVIEW WITH DON BUTLER V.P. of MARKETING - CADILLAC 2011-01-12 V. V. Haldavnekar Having a one-on-one conversation with cur guys is always fun as they are almost always willing to drop a hint or two underneath the hawk eyes of the HR representatives. Don Butler opened up with us along with few other bloggers on the first day of the NAIAS. Mr. Butler reiterated Cadillac's commitment on bringing the best vehicles in their respective segments. He gave a perfect American vernacular of the top of the line item being a "Cadillac" of the item and not a BMW, Lexus or Mercedes of the item and hence the desire to regain the mantle of the standard of the wo…

NAIAS Attendance Down Again Attendance was down for the fourth consecutive year at the North American International Auto Show, which concluded Sunday. By Sunday, 705,226 people had attended the 2007 show during the time the show was open to the press, industry and public. Sunday's attendance of 88,647 was not enough to push the overall figure over last year's show, which drew 759,310 visitors. In 2003, the show broke records with 838,000 people. Even though attendance was down slightly, the number of people who came to the auto show suggested that people still believe in Detroit's auto industry, said John Bonapace of Grosse Pointe Woods. "People still have hope," said…

So I’m back from 2 days of walking around the press preview days at NAIAS and....well Im very happy to be sitting down. Press days are a complete mad house. The best thing I can think to compare it to is high school. Did you ever have one class all the way on one side of the building...then the bell rings to go to the next class and your next class is allllll the way on the other side of the building. You only have a few minutes to get there and the hallways are packed with other students. Now imagine there are almost 7000 other students and you are all trying to get to the SAME classroom! You really start to feel like a cattle herd by the end of the day. Anyhow, I guess…

Hey guys. A few thougths of the show to follow on CD's post. Overall I thought the show was jsut jampacked with good stuff. It was so busy I didn't leave the press room much as the MPH guys just came back with more stuff for me to upload! When I was on the floor I was actually happy cobo is so small. i could do a whole round of shots and back upstairs in about 40 minutes. The production stuff I'm most excited about: Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7. The Mazda will probably be our next car if the turbo i4 can deliver decent power. The interior is the best mazda has made yet, a step over the miata. GM is getting so much better on the interiors. The new Tahoe is going …

With one week to go before the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the pictures will really start rolling out now. Today we got a much clearer look at the 2016 Chevrolet Volt due to be fully revealed next week. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, the 2016 Volt peeked its nose through the curtain to give us a better look at it's face. The upcoming Volt will have powertrain improvements rumored to give the EV a 12% gain in electric only range, some of that will come from a more interactive regeneration mode that is currently available on the Cadillac ELR. The regeneration mode is controlled through paddles on the steering wheel. Recently Ma…

New Cadillac to make its debut at Detroit Auto Show The 640-hp, 6.2-liter LT4-powered CTS-V will make its debut at the Detroit auto show in January. 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. The fenders are wider to accommodate the bigger wheels and the hood bulges to cover the 1.7-liter supercharger. Power is sent rearward to an electronically controlled limited slip differential. Caddy also skipped the carbon ceramic brakes on the V, the stock iron discs are better prepared to stop the car repeatedly from high speeds without long-term noise or chatter. The car will be offered in six colors, which will be available in limited numbers.

2007 Nissan Bevel Concept Nissan has designs on the Detroit auto show. by Marty Padgett (2006-12-08) Link to Original Article @ TCC Nissan says the concept it will show at the 2007 Detroit auto show in January will be dubbed the Bevel. The Bevel, Nissan says, will be a dynamic, multi-purpose vehicle with a small size, big utility and fresh thinking - including a function-inspired design, a 'command central' cockpit and high-utility interior." Nissan designers in La Jolla, Calif., penned the concept. It makes its debut alongside the 2008 Nissan Rogue crossover at the Detroit show. ---------- P.S. Bevel is a stupid name

Nissan says the Vmotion 2.0 concept revealed today at the Detroit Auto Show previews the future of their sedan designs. We hope so since the Maxima is the only good looking model out of their current sedan crop. The V-Motion grille that we have grown accustomed to on a number of Nissan models has been enlarged to up most of the space on the front end. There are deeply recessed bumper vents and steeply raked headlights on either side. Around the side, sharp character lines, deep cuts in the doors, and the floating roof that Nissan has been using on some of their vehicles. The concept rides on an 112.2-inch wheelbase (2.9-inches longer than the wheelbase on the A…

So far during this year's Detriot Auto Show, many of the automaker's media embargos have been broken early -- the Dodge Dart, the new Mercedes SL, and the Cadillac ATS all were put up for public viewing on the internet hours before they were officially meant to be. The new 2013 Ford Fusion was another car that fell victim to having its media embargo broken by Uncle Internet, but luckily the two pictures that leaked out earlier today weren't of the best quality and still left you wanting to see more. If you were wondering how the rear and interior of the new Fusion would turn out, well, here's some good news: Ford's embargo broke about an hour or two ago and now we can br…

Was up at NAIAS yesterday and walked through the show. Going to sum this up the best I can. GM booth had a more open and basic layout, yet was nice to move around in. But in prior years they used to have a 2nd level, stage and a few other large scale turn tables but had none of that this year. I was very suprised not to see any boasting of the plug in hybrids (Volt, Flexstream). They were both there but were just casually setting in the mix of things. They didn't even have the cut away chassis of the Volt. Very suprised they didn't setup a large, more informative display about the Volt at least. Toyota was deffinatly trying to play the green card. They had a Prius with st…

Ram released some teaser images on its website yesterday giving us a preview of the 2500HD and 3500HD that are due to be unveiled on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show. The images look like they are primarily from the top zoot Limited model, but in any case, show an aggressive grille, an attractive set of multibeam headlamps, and a RamBox. They also released a video that gives you some other hints like a column mounted shifter and a large infotainment screen. Toyota was hoping to keep the Supra under wraps until Monday when it makes its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show. However, the Japanese automaker's Mexico office had a different idea. Yesterday, Toyota Mexico tweeted out a video showing the Supra without any camouflage. The tweet, translated from Spanish reads, “Our new #Supra arrived in Japan!, and this is the story that #AkioToyoda tells us about its return.” The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before a number of people downloaded the video and post it to Facebook and YouTube - we have the video at the bottom of this story. The production model looks very much like the concept we saw a few years bac…

Preview: Kia Kue Concept Kia released a sketch today of the Kue concept that will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in early January. In the great tradition of concept vehicles that come before it, the Kue supposedly foretells what future Kia vehicles will look like. Showing that the Kue is not so pie-in-the-sky as we might think, however, Kia told Automotive News that it's built on a unibody platform, which makes it a candidate for an upcoming redesign of the Sorento that is supposedly being moved to a unibody platform for its next redesign in 2008. Preview: Mitsubishi Prototype X We were pretty excited about the new Lancer when we caught a glimpse of it earlier this week. The economy sedan should be a big seller for the company, but the enthusiast draw to the Lancer line is the high-performance Lancer Evolution, or Evo. Today Mitsubishi revealed that along with displaying the new Lancer at the Detroit auto show next month, it will also show a “Prototype X” concept that will serve as the basis for the next Evo. This year's Detroit Auto Show was somewhat down in terms of excitement. But considering last year's show was a 'once in a blue moon' event with a number of highly awaited vehicles and some surprises, 2016 was going to be somewhat a disappointment. Still, a number of automakers were willing to give it a shot and show off new models and concepts that would amaze all. It is time to see who is on the honor roll and who be heading to detention after the show. Acura Precision Concept: C Something I never thought I would say: I miss the shield grille. Also, were Acura's designers play too much F-Zero on the Super Nintendo. 2017 Audi A4/A4 Allroad: C+/B+ At first, I c…

There has been a bit of overlap for the Hyundai Sonata lineup as there is a new Sonata along with the last-generation Sonata Hybrid. Not anymore. The next-generation Sonata Hybrid made its debut in Korea today. The Korean-market Sonata Hybrid uses a updated parallel hybrid powertrain setup which boasts a direct-injection 2.0L four-cylinder and a 38-kilowatt electric motor. This is paired up to a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai says the new powertrain produces more overall power than the outgoing Sonata Hybrid's powertrain. Also seeing a change is the lithium-polymer battery pack which boasts an additional 13 percent in capacity. To make the Sonata Hybrid stan…

Last month we showed you a teaser picture of the a coming performance Lexus model, yet at the time Lexus did not release the name. If you guessed it was a GS-F, congratulations, you win the prize. Ahead of the Detroit Auto Show next week, Lexus has taken the wraps off of the 2016 Lexus GS-F. Joining the Lexus IS-F and RC-F, Lexus's F-Performance line is positioned to take on competition from Mercedes' AMG, BMW's M, and Cadillac's V-series cars. The GS-F will come with a 467 horsepower, naturally aspirated V8 that uses both Otto and Atkinson cycles to alternate between power and efficiency as the driving situation dictates. Ford and Volkswagen have spent a fair amount of 2018 talking about a possible alliance. We know that publically, the two have signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" focusing on commercial vehicles. But numerous rumors have been flying about saying this alliance could go further, such as autonomous technologies and electric vehicles. Nothing has been made official, that could be changing next week. Reuters has learned from two sources that Ford and Volkswagen will be making the alliance official next Tuesday during the Detroit Auto Show. It is unclear what the announcement will entail, possibly talking about commercial vehicles or more. The overall goal of the allianc…

Hyundai's big showing for the Detroit Auto Show next month will be the redesigned 2019 Veloster. Thanks to a spy photographer, we have gotten our first look at it without the camo. The pictures were captured during a shoot for a commercial or a video that might be shown during the unveiling. Despite the blurriness of the pictures, we can make out a number of details. For one, this looks to be the high-performance 'Turbo' model due to large, round, center exhaust tips and faux diffuser. The front end features a smaller mesh grille and aggressive bumper with deep cuts. One report says the roofline is lowered, though we can't really see that in the pictures. We're…

Subaru will be introducing a special edition of their hotted-up WRX STi next month at Detroit Auto Show called the S209. The company is keeping quiet on numerous details such as power figures and possible upgrades. But we can deduce some details by looking back at other S20(X) models. Back in 2000, Subaru introduced a limited-run Impreza STi called the S201 for Japan. Only 300 models were built and featured upgrades to the engine, suspension, and a wild body kit. Since then, Subaru has introduced a few more versions of the S20(X). The most recent was the S208 that used a turbocharged 2.0L boxer-four with 325 horsepower. Other changes included an adjustable Bilstein f…

Honda's showing for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show will be the 2017 Ridgeline pickup and today, the automaker released a teaser shot. Our first thought when we saw the picture was: Yep, that's a truck. Ok, maybe we are being somewhat snarky here. But it looks likes Honda is going for more of a truck shape than the previous Ridgeline. "Ridgeline will deliver everything you'd expect in a Honda from incredible packaging and fuel-efficiency to top safety technologies and innovative, segment-first features," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. We'll have more details when the Ridgeline debuts on January 11th. Sourc…

Overall, not a bad show. Only my second time ever attending (the first time was the year the SRT-10 was unveiled), but I had a great time. Woke up at 6:45 with my two friends, got to Tim Horton's by 7:45 and we were at Cobo by 8:15 (good thing this dude in a Celica was pacing around 90 because we kept with him the whole way.. ranging from 75-105 MPH lmao). Then, we stood in lines until about 9:10. Suddenly, I was yelling at my friends to "hurry your asses up.. my f***ing car's waiting!" They laughed and I pretty much ran to the Camaro (thanks so much for your "Aiyeee! Camaro! Camaro!" map, Chris). Which leads me to the list (concepts first, then production models, then ov…

I must ask you a question: How much bigger is it than the current Aveo? Overall, it does look bigger, but I am curious to know just how big. I'm thinking pretty close to Cobalt sized, but not sure. I'm hoping to be able to check it out myself, but due to a family issue (my son), I may not be able to go this year..... Gotta make sure everything is okay...(he is really sick) before I go out. He's getting better though......

Detroit 2010: a review The big story at this year's Detroit show is without doubt the staggering turnaround of Ford. The new Focus was the most significant launch of the show, and the new Fiesta has just gone on sale in the US. In fact, it's too early for either of these cars to show up in the company's American results - the Focus doesn't even hit showrooms for another year. But Ford had an obvious spring in its step at the show. It's simply a better-run, better-focused company than it has been in living memory. It has the same mission all round the world, and is converging the vehicles rather than making a rag-bag of different ones for different regions of the planet…

We are a little more than a month away from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but much like the Christmas music in stores the day after Halloween, companies like to tease us for a month or two ahead of time. One of the earliest teasers (that wasn't a full reveal like the Mercedes GLE) is the next generation Toyota Tacoma. So far, all we get to see is the tailgate of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma that will be revealed in about a month. We're expecting styling to borrow heavily from its big brother, the Toyota Tundra. The Tacoma has been the best selling small truck for a number of years now as the Detroit three ceded the segment to the Japanese. However, To…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 9, 2012 The Volkswagen Jetta can boast they offer many choices in the compact car class; two naturally aspirated, a turbo, and a diesel engine. Now, a new powertrain is joining the family. Volkswagen introduced a new Hybrid version of the Jetta today at the North American International Auto Show. The Hybrid will utlize a 1.4L turbo engine producing 150 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque and a 20-kW electric motor. As we accurately judged a few weeks back, Volkswagen's concept for the Detroit Auto Show is another Microbus. But don't call it that, instead call it the I.D. Buzz. Volkswagen is clear in their press release that the I.D. Buzz "is not a retro design on 22-inch wheels." We're not fully sure on that because it looks like Microbus with the large Volkswagen emblem up front, two-tone paint, and a large area of glass. The only point you can give Volkswagen about it not being a 'retro design' is the front end not being so blunt. The interior can seat up to eight people and there are some nice details such as a wooden floor and LED ambient lighting. Technology features inclu…

We were a bit worried about Volkswagen's showing at Detroit was only going to be the long-wheelbase Tiguan. But there is another vehicle that will be shown alongside. Volkswagen has released some teaser shots of the next I.D. concept and it looks like it will be a van - something akin to the Microbus judging from one of the pictures. The concept will be using Volkswagen's upcoming MEB (Modular Electric Drive) and use two electric motors - one up front and another in the back. This will provide all-wheel drive. This concept will also feature self-driving technology where a driver can press a button and steering wheel will retract. Various sensors, cameras, and las…
