German automakers are currently working on competitors to take on Tesla Model S. Case in point is Mercedes-Benz. In an interview with German publication auto motor und sport, Mercedes-Benz's development chief Thomas Weber said they are working on electric vehicle with a range of 400-500 kilometers (228-311 miles) that could be arriving 'soon'. Now this model would use Mercedes' modular platform, which means other models could use this new electric powertrain. This comes at an interesting time for Mercedes-Benz as the relationship between it and Tesla appears to be unraveling. Back in 2009, Mercedes' parent company, Diamler took a 9.1 percent stake in Tesla. The tw…

As much anyone will tell you there is no such thing as too much power, there is a point where power will just overwhelm the tires and you'll be sitting there, doing a burnout. This is why you're seeing more manufacturers adding all-wheel drive to their vehicles to actually get the power down to the wheels. The latest one is Mercedes-AMG. Speaking with Top Gear, Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers says the next-generation model will be available with all-wheel drive. The reason comes down to people preferring the current model with the all-wheel drive model. “But we are going to introduce a completely new four-wheel drive system, one which we’ve never had in the company…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 16, 2013 Mercedes-Benz is preparing an all out attack with the BMW 3-Series when the next-generation C-Class when it goes on sale next summer. The current C-Class has been making some inroads into the 3-Series. Comparing just the sedan variants, the C-Class sold 70,493 C-Classes in North America last year – just 4,690 fewer than the 3-Series sedan in the same timeframe. However, the 3-Series has a much bigger lineup that includes a sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible, hybrid, and diesel. Mercedes-Benz has the C-Class sedan and coupe. Compare them again with their entire model lineup and the 3-Series has a huge lead…

It may seem odd for an automaker to launch a new wagon in the U.S. considering how crazy we are for crossovers. But Mercedes-Benz knows there is a small subset of luxury buyers who prefer the looks and practicality of a wagon. For those, Mercedes has announced a new E-Class wagon. The 2017 E-Class wagon takes the shape found on the sedan and adds a longer roof and rear tailgate. Using the same 115.7-inch wheelbase as the sedan, the wagon will offer more interior space. As to how much, Mercedes doesn't provide that information. But considering the current wagon offers 57.4 cubic feet of cargo space, we expect it to be about the same or slightly more. Like the curre…

Rumor has it that the next AMG C63 will be the first of a number of models to ditch their V8 in favor of 4-cylinder hybrid power. According to Autocar, the C63 could also lose a rear-wheel drive option, going instead with standard all-wheel drive. The engine would be an electrified version of the new M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter. In it's most powerful current form, it is the most powerful 4-cylinder in production anywhere putting out 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, and that's without any electric boosting. The engine was engineered to be mounted transversely or longitudinally and also with an eye on hybridization. For the C63, the M139 engine would ado…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 21, 2012 Mercedes-Benz has got some big changes in store for E-Class for its mid-cycle refresh in 2014. Autobild reports the E-Class will look dramatically different than the current model. The current look of sharp and edgy will be dropped in favor softer lines and a more elegant appearance. Only the doors, windows, and roof will remain. One of the major differences between the current and refreshed E-Class will be the headlights. The current model uses dual headlights, the refreshed model will use a single unit. Of course this being a Mercedes-Benz, there is some-sort of new technology. In this case, its a…

Mercedes-Benz is in the process of bringing out the new S-Class Coupe and working on a S-Class Plug-In Hybrid. But is there room for a pure electric S-Class? According to Dr Uwe Ernstberger, the head of Mercedes-Benz's large cars, it could happen. Ernstberger told Top Gear that a fully electric S-Class isn't a good fit for the time being, "a complete electric car will be done in the future." The big hurdle for this? The batteries. "We have to work on the capacities of the batteries to get a better package in the car. Because you do not want to lose all the comfort features of an S-Class for transporting a battery only," Ernstberger said. For now, those who want a bit …

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has been around for 35 years and in that time, the vehicle hasn't gone under any sort of drastic change. That could be change could happen in 2017 as the German automaker is planning some drastic changes. Autocar has learned the automaker will be increasing the G-Wagen’s width to help improve stability and to make space for a new front suspension which will either be a three or four-link set-up and have a electro-mechanical steering system. The increase in width will also mean an increase in interior space. Mercedes-Benz will also add more aluminum to the G-Wagen's structure which will cut around 450 pounds off its curb weight. We are still a few years out before Mercedes-Benz launches their new midsize truck, but new details have come out about the model. CarAdvice got some information from an insider at a recent design forum in Australia. First, Mercedes will be calling the truck either X-Class or Z-Class. It seems the automaker is leaning towards X since it brings up images of ruggedness. The truck will only be offered in a crew-cab variation which allows Mercedes not to spend a lot of time developing a regular or extended cab variations. It also gives Mercedes the ability to distance their truck from the Nissan Navara - the model which Mercedes is using as a base for their truck. …

Mercedes-Benz wants to try and fill every little niche in the automotive marketplace. Case in point is doing a four-door coupe for the next-generation S-Class. Expected to arrive sometime after the next-generation S-Class, due in 2020 or 2021, the S-Class four-door coupe will wear the SEC nameplate. This name hasn't been seen since 1993 when it was used for Mercedes' flagship coupe. Sources tell Car the SEC will use the mid-section of the long-wheelbase of the S-Class sedan paired with the front and rear end of the coupe. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 4, 2012 One problem with modern vehicles is how heavy they have become. And in this era of tougher CAFE standards, automakers are looking at how to drop the weight down. Mercedes-Benz is going the extreme route if a report from Car Magazine pans out. A new report from Autocar says that Mercedes-AMG is proposing a new entry-level sports car to take on the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. The model is being presented as a indirect replacement to the slow selling SLC to Mercedes-Benz’s board of management. According to sources, the model is in the "conceptual stage" and needs approval from the board. But it is clear that AMG has given some thought if this project is given the green light. The design is said to have clear links to the upcoming Project One hypercar, and come in a coupe and convertible. For power, Autocar says the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that will be used in both the new A35 and A45 hot hatches.…

The 43-badged models from Mercedes-AMG provide a choice to those who want something a bit different from the standard Mercedes model but cannot afford the full-blown AMG variant. But a new report says the 43s will transition to 53s and come with an electric motor to boot. Wheels has learned from a source that the next-generation CLS-Class - due in 2018 - will be the first Mercedes-AMG model to debut the 53 badge. It will use a new turbocharged 3.0L inline-six with 429 horsepower, along with a mild-hybrid system that is capable of producing 70 extra horsepower when needed. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 29, 2012 Mercedes-Benz is keeping their mouth shut on the refreshed G-Class. But, that hasn't stopped Mercedes-Benz of New Orleans from accidently revealing some information about the G-Class which will appear at next week's New York Auto Show. We're using "refreshed" lightly as the only changes for the G-Class include a row of LED lights underneath the headlights and sleeker mirrors. As for the powertrains, there is some big news. The current G500 will say goodbye to the 5.5L V8 for a new 4.8L turbo V8 and the G63 AMG will get a 5.5L twin-turbo V8 producing 563 horsepower. The long-rumored G65 AMG will come to…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 8, 2013 Two years ago, a rumor began flying that Mercedes-Benz would produce a competitor to BMW's X6 crossover supposedly called the MLC. Car Magazine has some new intel on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class, expected to go on sale in 2016. There is also a rumored G-Wagen with a AMG tuned 6.0L bi-turbocharged V12 producing 612 HP and an eye-watering 737 lb-ft of torque. Both vehicles will come with minor exterior changes including a restyled front bumper with extra a…

The first of the German auto companies has fallen inline with the Tesla NACS charge port, Mercedes-Benz made this Announcement late Friday night. This is a major change as news had been reporting that VW was in talks with Tesla and the expected first German auto company to support NACS ports, now we know that Mercedes-Benz will be that first company moving from CCS to NACS. Mercedes made the following points in their press release: Mercedes-Benz to integrate North American Charging Standard (NACS) in its electric vehicle line-up – introduction in North America starting 2025 Mercedes-Benz drivers gain access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers …

Mercedes-Benz has released information on the new 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. While the GLC is all new, the most newsworthy change is under the hood where the turbocharged 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder gains the assistance of a 48 volt electric motor-generator mild-hybrid. The gas engine makes 258 horsepower, up 3 from the prior year, and 295 lb-ft of torque, up 22, however that torque peak is available in a narrower band of 2000 rpm - 3200 rpm compared to the 1800 rpm - 4000 rpm of the outgoing version. The combined system more than makes up for the narrower torque band with a boost from the electric motor of 23 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Most of the electric boost is…

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (Geländewagen) has somehow become the brand's Frankenstein. What we mean is the SUV has been part of a number of crazy projects. A key example is the G63 AMG 6x6 which brought together a turbo V8 and a number of off-road tweaks to make it a complete monster. The latest creation is the G500 4x4² (4x4 squared) which takes some of the hardware found in the 6x6 (portal axles) and a lifted suspension, and places it into a standard G550. Mercedes says the G500 4x4² offers 17.7 inches of ground clearance (the standard G550 only offers 8.1 inches of ground clearance) and can ford up to 39.3 inches of water. At the moment, Mercedes sells the G500 4x4²…

The days of high-performance V12s sitting under the hood of AMG models is coming to an end. Speaking with Automotive News at the New York Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers said the brand would stop selling V12 models once it phases out the 65 line that uses them. "There is still demand for a V-12, but if you move forward with a V-12 in the future, the investment will be too high, in my perspective. You have to increase power, and you have to move forward with the technology in that engine. We'd better invest our money into electrified V-8 vehicles," said Moers. The current 6.0L V12 is still capable for future models explained Moers, but not for the h…

Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept traveled from Stuttgart Germany, across the Swiss Alps and Northern Italy, to its destination of Cassis on the Cote d'Azur in the south of France. This 1,008 km (626.3 Miles) @ 8.7 kWh per 100km (62.14 miles) of energy consumption. The road trip started off by certification and sealing of the charge port and a team monitoring the auto the whole time. Mercedes-Benz has been teasing for the past few weeks their showing at Auto China which is expected to be an SUV. But thanks to someone accidentally posting photos on the official Mercedes-Benz website, we have gotten our first look at the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept - quite the mouthful. The design... the less said about it, the better. It's a sedan with a tall ride height - think Volvo S60 Cross Country or Subaru Outback sedan. The front features the tall, vertical slat grille seen on the facelifted Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. The rear end styling is similar to the S-Class coupe with small taillights and angled trunk lid. The interior picture reve…

Automakers are having a tough time trying to keep their new cars under wraps till the day they're ready to announce. Such is the case of Mercedes-Benz which had their latest SL leak onto the internet. The pictures are suspected to be from a brochure and show the SL from the front and rear, along with the top up and down. The overall shape comes from the SLS AMG supercar and SLK roadster. We also see a shot of the interior as well, decked out in various shades of black and white. We know the next SL will lose a bit of weight thanks to the extensive use of aluminum in the body. No one knows what will lie under the hood of the SL, but expect a V8 and V12. UPDATE: Earlier …

We gathered three likely 2016 midsize candidates: the redesigned Lexus RX 350 F Sport, the very originator of the segment itself and the first winner of MT’s SUV of the Year; the Lincoln MKX, a finalist in our 2016 SUV of the Year contest; and an all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC300 that replaces the boxy (and smaller) GLK-Class with handsome styling and a generous helping of the celebrated C-Class sedan’s hardware, interior treatment, and tech. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 22, 2012 Joining alongside the Mercedes-Benz GL at the New York Auto Show next month will be the refreshed GLK. Going down the evolutionary road, the GLK's design still carries the same sharp lines as the model it replaces, but now, the creases and sculpting is more rounded and smoother. The interior has also been updated with a restyled dashboard and the gearshift moving to the steering column. But the big news lies under the hood. The GLK's powertrain lineup grows to two. Coming back will be the GLK 350 which is a 3.5L direct-injected V6 producing 302 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque. Joining the 3.5L will be the G…

B-Class for America Baby Benz headed for our shores By EVAN MCCAUSLAND | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Published 07/26/07, 10:22 am et Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. portfolio is about to grow—by adding a small car. According to Bloomberg, the next version of the B-Class compact crossover is being designed for sale in the U.S. Available in Europe since 2005, the B-Class is due for a makeover in 2011 or 2012. Previous attempts to alter the current car for U.S. sale were nixed for cost reasons, but the new car is being designed for global sale from day one. This process lowers cost, allowing the B-Class to build a better business case. “At least we have the door open,…

Edmunds STUTTGART, Germany — The soon-to-be-launched and much-hyped Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec has reportedly failed to meet emissions criteria in the important states of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont. Mercedes said its E320 CDI was "the cleanest diesel vehicle in the world," but apparently not clean enough for U.S. regulators. Despite their popularity in Europe, diesels have never been commonplace in the United States and have a reputation as a technology for big rigs only. But there's a more ecological explanation for the lukewarm reception. Diesel is actually more harmful to the environment than gasoline because it generates more nitrogen ox…

Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker to launch its competitor to the M3/M4 and the name is the Mercedes-AMG C63. Mercedes-AMG? Are you sure you didn't mistype that? No. From now on, AMG vehicles will wear the Mercedes-AMG nameplate. This was introduced on the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT coupe that will do battle with the Porsche 911. Like the E63, the new C63 will be offered in two states of tune. The standard C63 features a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 producing 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class: What’s New Half as many return for 2008 by Marty Padgett | Link to Original Article @ TCC | (2007-07-24) The R-Class "sports tourer" was introduced in 2006 as an all-new model. It resembles a slightly sportier and more aerodynamic wagon with conventional passenger-car doors - not unlike the Chrysler Pacifica. For 2007, Mercedes added a high-performance R63 AMG with 507 horsepower and a diesel-powered R320 CDI to the lineup. For 2008, the R63 AMG and R500 versions have been dropped, leaving a V-6 diesel or gas version from which to choose. The R350 model is now offered in rear- or four-wheel drive. Both versions are fitted to a new seven…

TCC Test: 2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec It's no secret that most Americans are less than fond of diesels. Past U.S.-market diesels have been clattery, smoky and painfully slow compared to gas-powered counterparts, and U.S. diesel fuel has been sticky, stinky, harder to find and little (if any) cheaper than gasoline. Unless they've traveled to Europe lately, where quicker, quieter and nearly smokeless modern diesels have become more popular than gas burners due to their higher fuel economy and lower fuel taxes, they've had little reason to change that opinion. Until now. Read "2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec: The world’s cleanest diesel, Benz promises" @ The Car Conn…

Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept at Auto China following a leak last week spilling key information about the concept. We can confirm that the Ultimate Luxury concept is a fully electric vehicle with four motors producing 750 horsepower. An 80-kWh battery provides a range of over 200 miles (about 500 kilometers on the European test cycle) - much less than the 310 mile figure we reported last week. A fast charge system can provide 60 miles of range within five minutes. But why a sedan/SUV hybrid design?
