My mother got on my nerves when she said my car reminds her of a bicycle helmet. She drives a Cube. I thought of it too late, but I should have shot back "yeah, and there's the box it came in!" *points at green Nissan* Please share any untoward comments you've heard about your ride.

Since I can't come up with $2k... I'm stranded with only $2600 to buy a vehicle. I'm suspecting my parents would atleast be able to help me out a little bit, so I'd say my limit is $3k. What can I get for a lousy $3k? Give me suggestions. However, I'm still going to continue to be picky. I will only consider cars with 4cyls, manual trannies, and two doors. I might consider a sedan depending on what it is. That means... no floaty Buicks and such. As far as reliability... f@#k it. As long as the car itself runs good, I'll deal with it regardless of it's reputation.

Some rides didn't get the credit they deserve when new, or were once well known and have become forgotten in the interim. I think I may have written an estimate yesterday for one of Nos' aunts. Her last name: "Purvee". The first 3 letters in her license plate: "EWE". I once had a regular customer at my job in MD with the name "Lucius Butt". Do you know, or have you heard of any real people with embarrassing names?

Unhappy America If America can learn from its problems, instead of blaming others, it will come back stronger http://www.economist.com/opinion/displaySt...ory_ID=11791539 NATIONS, like people, occasionally get the blues; and right now the United States, normally the world’s most self-confident place, is glum. Eight out of ten Americans think their country is heading in the wrong direction. The hapless George Bush is partly to blame for this: his approval ratings are now sub-Nixonian. But many are concerned not so much about a failed president as about a flailing nation. One source of angst is the sorry state of American capitalism. The "Washington consensus" told th…

I get my gas at a local convenience store. There is a lady at the counter in there, about 60 years old. Every time I go in there, she asks me about my car. Does it have Onstar, I need to try the turn-by-turn, is it an '09, it's a nice looking car, she has a Torrent, same as the Equinox, but she likes it, her husband likes Cobalts... etc. etc. When I had my Sierra, I always went to another place to get gas, but before the Sierra, with my Colorado, I used to go in there, and she would always tell me her husband had a Colorado, and that mine was nice looking. It's kind of amusing, especially when she repeats herself every time I see her, but it's also kinda nice to he…

So tonight, I'm surfing the web, talking to my boss on the phone, and getting ready to start reading an article about Planes in a woodworking magazine. Get a call from my 17year old son...he is about to be charged with a federal crime... Seems he and a friend took a BB gun into a field, next to our subdivision, with his friend...they had the permission of the owner of the field to use it. Someone called and complained, and the boys had photographs of a few prominent political figures they were going to be using as targets...both Republicans and Democrats, lest any of the C and G people get sand in their vagina over this one. So apparently it is as much of a federal cr…

My friends have a 2011/2012 Acadia without a Nav screen (they have what I think is called the black tie radio or something like that). They want to unpair a cell phone because apparently they have filled up the number of phones you can have paired. Is there a command they can speak to do this or something they can access via the radio's menu? They lost the owner's manual and online I seem to only find the newer ones with intellilink.

Last week we had "Unpopular Opinion about an Unpopular Car". This week we're doing Unpopular Opinion about a Popular Car. What good selling car or one that gets lots of praise in the motoring press do you have a contrary opinion about? One entry for me is the Alfa Romeo Giulia. While they handle well, I find their styling, both interior and exterior to be completely underwhelming. They lack the refinement of most of their competition. The reliability is ...erm.... traditional Italian brand reliability. I've just never seen what the rest of the motoring press is going on about with how "great" these cars are. Apparently shoppers agree with me as the Alfa brand is…

I think of the 3000+ people on this forum, and the 100 or so who post here on a weekly basis I am one of the most out-spoken and transparent ones. 99% of the time I do NOT let my oppinion go unregistered if it is a topic I feel strongly about. But here's something I do not confess very often. It is a dark secret of sorts, a true paradox along the lines of the last temptation of Christ. I'm in love with a Japanese car and it's NOT a Datsun... hell it's not even the usual 1970s hardtop 2dr that looks like a Japanime version of a late 60s GM A-body or early 70s Mopar. About every other week or so I cruise some online car buying websites looking to see what decent used GMCs are for sale. Wishing that I had the extra cash, or at least had an easy and quick way to get out of the AURA lease, most of the time I just "daydream" about buying one of the many trucks I've found. Yesterday I' was a little bored so I cruise on over to one of the used car buying sites and search '99-'02 GMC Sierras. I found this one: 2001 GMC Sierra SLE Regular Cab, Shortbed K1500 It's what I've always wanted (well, if it had the sportside bed option it'd really be perfect) - regular cab, shortbed, K1500 (4WD) SLE with tons of factory options (foglights,…

I am an honest man. I lied to my father. As some of you know, I like to go camping at a particular campground in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. It's a gay/lesbian campground, and further, it is clothing optional. I go two or three times a season. Without being too specific, over the last four years I've been going I've been telling my parents (seperately, they're divorced) that I've been going "camping upstate"... which sufficed... until my dad mentioned one day that he delivers tires (he retired from Armstrong floor company after 41 years and now drives a pickup truck, delivering tires for a local merchant) to a customer in the same town. I spoke up and said…

1988 BMW Dealership Time capsule For some twisted reason we're all attracted to the mysterious allure of an abandoned building. In Oakville, Ontario there stands a building that for a petrol head trumps even the eeriest of places. At only a stones throw away from our dealership in Ajax, Ontario we're surprised we haven't heard about this place before. The story goes as follows. In 1988 the dealer, located on Royal Windsor Drive and operating under the name "Citation Motors", had his concession license revoked due to unknown reasons. They then moved to Toronto under the name "Downtown BMW" which in 2002 closed up shop. The owner, apparently a well-of…

First of all, the global leadership in Paris and Tokyo sees little purpose to Buick and Saturn, so these brands will be cancelled immediately. Apologies to anyone who actually cared about them. Renault has plans to come back to the U.S., and it's believed the best way to do this is sell all GMC/Chevy GMT900's as Renaults. The Silverado will be known as the Renault Clouseau, in honor of the legendary French detective: The Tahoe will be sold as the Renault Chirac, after the great French premier who stood up to Yankee imperialism. It's believed that these moves will give Renault a volume of 1.5 million units in North America, instantly making it a major player. It wi…

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that a man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow Greyhound bus passenger is not criminally responsible due to mental illness. The decision means Chinese immigrant Vince Li will be treated in a mental institution instead of going to prison. The family of victim Tim McLean dismissed the trial as a "rubber stamp" that allows Li to get away with murder. "A crime was still committed here, a murder still occurred," said Carol deDelley, McLean's mother. "There was nobody else on that bus holding a knife, slicing up my child." The judge said Li should not be held criminally accountable for stabbing McLea…

WASHINGTON - Employers ramped up hiring in March, driving the unemployment rate down to 4.4 percent, matching a five-year low. It was a surprisingly strong performance in an economy that has otherwise shown signs of sluggishness recently. The new snapshot, released by the Labor Department on Friday, also showed that employers boosted their payrolls by a strong 180,000 in March, the most since December. Workers’ also saw their paychecks get bigger. The fresh figures suggested that companies are not feeling a need to dramatically clamp down on hiring in the face of the slower overall economic activity and the deep housing slump. “There’s been worry that housing troubles…

US OKs $150 million to help Yemen fight terrorism WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has approved $150 million in military assistance to Yemen, the country where al-Qaida linked militants planned the failed Christmas Day airliner attack over Detroit, The Associated Press has learned. Administration officials said the money was approved Friday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and is more than double the amount of U.S. aid to Yemen last year. It will pay for military equipment and training for Yemeni forces. U.S. officials worry that Yemen is becoming the next significant terrorist staging ground, amid ongoing signs that lower-level al-Qaida operatives have been moving into the …

MOMBASA, Kenya -- U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday. Capt. Richard Phillips was in "imminent danger" of being killed before snipers shot the pirates in an operation authorized by President Barack Obama, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said. He said the pirates were armed with AK-47s and small-caliber pistols and were pointing the rifles at the captain when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge gave the order to open fire. Gortney, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, said the White House had given "ve…

Five of the nine Supreme Court justices voted to overturn a 1937 ruling that limited corporate funding of political campaigns. This makes me very nervous. We have upended 60 years of campaign finance rules and have done a 180 back to the robber baron era of politics. Not only will this affect the national level, it could affect state and local level as well. Imagine the local Wal-Mart funding the election of a small town mayor if he promises to provide incentives and upgraded roads for a new store, or a major employer backing a candidate for governor if he promises to relax regulation. And not only that, but the more money you have, the more negative media you ca…

WASHINGTON – States cannot ban the sale or rental of ultraviolent video games to children, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, rejecting such limits as a violation of young people's First Amendment rights and leaving it up to parents and the multibillion-dollar gaming industry to decide what kids can buy. The high court, on a 7-2 vote, threw out California's 2005 law covering games sold or rented to those under 18, calling it an unconstitutional violation of free-speech rights. Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia, said, "Even where the protection of children is the object, the constitutional limits on governmental action apply." Scalia, who pointed out the viol…

[source: MSN Money] The US-China Ponzi scheme By unwittingly tying together their fortunes as they pursued their own interests, the 2 nations have put themselves on an economic path of mutually assured destruction. So I have another 900 mile round trip journey to make next week, but this one is for family reasons rather than work. I can get a rental car for $250 all in, and that includes the extra insurance. Using the standard mileage deduction, using my own car would cost me $486 (900 X 0.54)... assume that includes fuel. A $250 rental plus figure $100 in gas. The other kink in the chain.... the Buick really needs tires... It'll make it through this trip, but I'm nearly down to the wear bars. Those will be about $750 (I think I'm going with Triple-Treads and see if I can skip snow tires this year)

What's up with the stupid prices on used vehicles now days? I started looking into used '07 Avalanches about 2 years ago. I thought the prices for a '07 where high then, now 2 years later a comparable optioned '07 Av is no less money!! I bought the Av when it was 2 years old and paid half of MSRP. Now a 3-4 year old vehicles is barely 70% of what it was new. is there a "car bubble" that is going to pop?? Been in the market for purchasing for a year now. Alright, so after a week of back-and-forth e-mailing with the owner of a slightly older used car I found for sale on a Craigslist ad, I'm planning to go check it out sometime today (likely in the early afternoon). Since it has been a LONG time since I shopped for a used car, and even then is was for a newer used car, is there a standard checklist to take along so I don't overlook anything? It would be a bonus if it was from a "Used Car Shopping for Dummies with little Mechanical Skills" book. If I like what I see, I will be asking to take it for a much more thorough inspection by an AA-approved mechanic. But I want to be able to perform a basic inspection so the selle…

My wife's 'ex'-car is an '03 Pontiac GP SE. 3.1L. We bought it in '05 with 29K for $13K. When she upgraded to a new '09 Malibu 2LT, we debated selling the GP, but held onto it as an errand/spare car. My older son got his license in early '11. This year he's been working 5 days/wk & driving the GP. He also has an active social schedule. I believe it has right about 139K on it. It has really been an excellent car as far as reliability goes. Batteries, tires, brakes, and I did the A/C condenser & compressor last spring. Hey, if anyone here wants a userbar sig like mine, Northstar's, or NOS's, I'll be happy to make you one. Just leave your request here and I'll try my best to get back with you. Just don't swamp me. Okay, I'll just need the following info from you: Any color scheme you want. (Mine is yellow and black, obviously, for obvious reasons.) If you want a custom userbar with your username and a logo (see below) to start out your sig. If so, please leave the image you want to use as your logo. If you want a [insert Make Here] Driver bar after that. Specify the make of your car. Or, instead, you could specify the model. Any other userbars you want in the sig (I.E. C&G Club…

Today when I went to get our mail, I noticed a small box, thinking it was something I ordered for my new office, I opened it. Low and behold it was a DVD called , when I looked at the address, it was addressed to my 70 year old neighbor. Now here's my question, should I bring it over to him or reseal it and give it back to the Mailman as misdilvered ...

As promised the GM SHOW is about to begin, hey kids? The Börger and his friends within GM now have the keys to the kingdom. Here is something else you can gnash your teeth on. 2008 promises to be even more fun, the economy will play a big part, people will not be buying cars in 2008 like they did before. Got your popcorn ready? It's going to be a great show. Oh and I want to thank those here that gave me the inspiration to help bring GM Europe's vision of GM to life. You know who you are. Oh and TICK-TOCK! :AH-HA_wink: Just some light reading, enjoy: http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/04/gen...rearwheeld.html

I've been looking at Google maps' Street View the last hour or two... this is INSANE! You can go to Australia, Spain, etc and see streets and everything! If you're lost... go to Google Maps, then think of somewhere to go (type in Detroit or something). Look at the regular map, then on the left (on top of the zoom scroller) is a little man you can click and drag to the street. Then the world is yours and you can look at many, many places. It's nuts!

You could get a larger displacement into a smaller package...... what are the downsides? Could you imagine a Mini with a 2.7 litre or so V4?

The race was run on Sunday, Oct 10. Those of you with access to Speed Channel will be able to see a 2 hour presentation on October 17 at 3PM ET. I won't give away any spoilers, but here's an incident from the opening lap of the race. Fabian Coulthard suffers a tire failure and rolls through the gravel several times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2j1Ra1wDl4 "I knew it was missing some panels when I got out without opening the door." You and your significant other NEED to get away...and soon! That's exactly what WE needed to do and did. But our choice of getaway was an almost kitchy Pocono resort...any less red paint would have been tacky, but as it turns out this much made it fun! The place is called Paradise Stream and it's a couple's all-inclusive resort. Check out our little getaway to the Poconos in the latest issue of Automotive Traveler. We had a great time and you will too! http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/3103 What do you think of it?

Ok boys and girls, vacation time for me has arrived. We are off to my parents house in the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Croix (pronounced Croy) to be exact. Try not to miss my insightful post to much. :AH-HA_wink: Oh I will have computer access there, and may be able to sneak a peek at the post so I don't get to far behind. Anyway we leave later today, and if any of you are in the town of Christiansted, stop by and say hello, we will be there 2 weeks.

Finally! I've been at work but mentally away for about 2 weeks, today was finally my last day before taking a ton of time off. Looking back, I'm not sure why I bothered going in yesterday or today, but I did. Today was fantastic because we had out holiday luncheon which took up about 3 hours of my time, add to that leaving an hour early, and I'm feeling all right. Just need to get through tomorrow and Thursday and I'm off the the beach for a week.

ocn's vacation, day 1: So, one or two of you may recall a thread on my first service visit with my Fiesta. It was to get a second key programmed for the car. That key was incorrectly cut by someone at Ford, so round two was necessary. This morning was round two. I got to the dealership at 7:50 for my 8:00 appointment for something that should take about 3 minutes. At about 8:40 I started doing the bad customer thing... I started walking around outside the shop, looking for my car. Found it. Tech was in his bay, at a desk on a laptop, looking up info on how to do the programming. He was stumped. I walked in and introduced myself as the car owner. He said the key…

Stopped off at the gym this morning. Was on treadmill for 25 minutes, felt good, got off and went in for a shower. Found my lock busted on the locker, twisted so I couldn't open it. Got an employee to cut the lock the rest of the way off, but the latch on the locker was also broken. After using a screwdriver to open the busted latch, I went through my stuff to find all my cash missing from my wallet, but everything else intact. The shift manager called the local police. In the meantime, I had to call and cancel my two credit cards and, to be safe, order a new bank card. After the officer interviewed me, two other customers walked over and told me of similar events …

I hope I gain ten pounds So, where are you guys going?

Just a place to swap stories about our vaccine experiences. I got the Moderna shot on Jan 11th. Other than a sore arm for a few days (same thing I get with a flu shot) I had no side effects. I got my second shot on Feb 11th at 6pm. The next morning I woke up feeling feverish with body aches and chills. I took Advil and drank Gatorade and felt blah all day. In the evening I had to pick up a curbside grocery order, I didn’t feel well but I went anyway. On the way back I really felt awful and almost pulled over to make Albert drive back. I made it home and went right back to bed. I had fevers during the night for the next few nights. I didn’t start feeling no…

Does my eye spy a "350" badge on the fender next to "Malibu", or is it a "307"... <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pu-TnCo4yQ8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Has anyone else seen the original Vanishing Point. I just watched it last night and it was great. Good car chase as well. Motor Trend ruined the movie for me though. They explained the 2 bulldozers so I knew the meaning in the first part of the movie. The car that was crashed into the bulldozers was actually a 67 Camaro. Motor Trend explained it because you can see the upside down Camaro badge when the townspeople are examining the wreckage. I didn't see the badge but I saw the body and windowline and I knew it was a Camaro. This was a good car chase movie. Anyone else seen it or seen any other good car chase movies? My favourite car chase is in Bulitt.

I'm thinking about putting vanity plates on my Camaros ('68 SS & '73 Z28/RS) but I can't think of anything really cool. Anybody have any ideas? EDIT: Basic specs: The '68 is a 350 4-speed car that is/will be more of a "classic" cruiser. The '73 houses a 406 with a Turbo350 transmission and is/will be more of a "custom" car. Neither will be too wild though, the plates will be NC plates which means 8 letters or less. A few pics:

Maybe it is just me, but I have noticed quite a few rusty Caravans lately... Not the beat up ones from the 80s...I'm talking late 90s early 00s.... And it is not just a bits of rust (like those who never. ever wash the car ) This rusting is everywhere-doors, hood, hatch, front doors, sliding doors.... Now I expect this out of the older cars (80s, early 90s), but some of these vans are barely 10 years old. A good griend of my mom has a 03 Caravan-and the sliding door alreay has a decent amount of rust on it. Makes me sad. I was actually considering a SB caravan to replace the wagon ( More room for friends/family hockey stuff)... Hmmm...Do you guys notice t…

Classics ones, that is. I've always liked the classic vans (grew up around vans), and there has been a few driving around here lately.... I'm, actually pondering the idea of a classic van....something my whole family could enjoy. I'm thinking late 60s- early 80s. Any ideas? Good websites you know of?
