Yeah, so it's Thursday. Dinner at mom's once again. I called her from my truck to tell her I'd be a few minutes late because I had to pick up my taxes. Big mistake. All evening she tried to pry out of me how much my refund will be. "It's not a big thing. How much will you get back?" "I'm not going to ask you to buy me anything." "I'll bet if your dad asked you, you'd tell him." etc., etc. Then she turned to "well, now that you've joined a gym, have you met any girls there?" "Is your new truck as nice as your old one?" I swear, it's in their DNA. Is everyone's mom this way? :AH-HA_wink:

I went to Montana and Alberta for a week over the July 4th holiday and took 6 gigs worth of pictures. The last time I was in Montana was 1997, so it had been a while and I had forgotten how wide open some parts of the state are. There is so little humidity that an 85 degree day felt really nice compared to back here. I was in Great Falls most of the time because my grandma used to live there and my grandpa was stationed at Malmstrom AFB in the 50's (called Great Falls AFB at the time). We also passed through Helena, Butte, Billings, Bozeman, Virginia City, and Nevada City. Also, we took a day trip across the border to Writing-On-Stone provincial park near Milk River…

I think I've finally succeded in making a definitive list of my next car (yeah, right). It's down to these four: 1. 2001+ Volvo S60 (2.4T or T5 likely) 2. 2004+ Pontiac Grand Prix (GT or GTP) 3. 2000-2003 Nissan Maxima 4. 2002-2006 Nissan Altima (3.5SE or SE-R) The common thing for me in all of these cars is liking the looks, sounds, and powertrains (of the above-mentioned versions) of all of these. These can all be had for around the same price (maybe not the SE-R or T5). So if you were in my shoes, which would you choose. Please be as objective as you can.

Of course... The Beast wouldn't be the Beast if it weren't a pain in the ass. This past week, it suddenly became much, much, much louder. Somewhere near the catalytic converter, it's either rusted through or rusted off completely. I haven't had a chance to put it up on ramps to see for sure. Peaking under, I can't really see too much. Everything is still there, it seems, however. On a noise level, it's not as loud as it would be if you just cut off the exhaust, a la demolition derby car, but its loud enough that everthing that can rattle inside, does. As well, something that's been going on a bit longer, there's this rattling coming from the rolling gear, suspension…

Well Deftones got me go'in on these videos. This is my favorite band Savatage. Yea their old but this was in 87, from "Gutter Ballet" their 5 or 6th release. Forgive me if you guys have seen these videos, I rarely watched or watch MTV so I have seen very few. THis is a ballad of sorts but not "love", its about the feelings of a stage performer after the curtain draws closed for what may be the last time. Dont judge it from the opening. Simple song but from the heart, more commercial than most of their stuff. These guys were as much pioneers of "heavy metal" as Metalica or Iron Maiden - debut in 1983. But they have been too overlooked in my opinion. http://video.google.co…

So this was probably a day or so after I bought it and I took it over to my parents for photos. For some reason I didn't look very happy. hahahahaha! What's interesting about this next one was that many years later I ultimately ended up driving that GMC Jimmy that was parked in front of the Camaro in the photo. When I got the Jimmy from my Dad (for painting his house) it had about 75000 miles on it. I ended up putting about 70000 miles on it myself before it got ruined during Hurricane Ike. I wish I had more pictures of this car at my house, but I have no idea where they would be. This was my 1988 Cutlass (it was a hand me down from parents). This was taken…

As has been noted, I watch the license plate numbers, so I have a good idea of whats being newly plated in my neck of the woods. Now that C4C is a fading memory, I'm noticing a lot more "second tier" or "third tier" used cars being plated. Stuff that looks like it was languishing under a tree for a minor fault that has been pressed back into service. I'm seeing a lot of GM FWD A-bodies returning to service and more Ford Tempo/Topazes... stuff that tended to hold together better from the '82-'94 timeframe... sorry not a lot of Chrysler, or J-bodies. I'm also finding that a lot of '96-'01 stuff being sold have nasty mechanical problems... high mileage... and since I'm t…

I don't know, but it's like getting my G6 is just more trouble than ever. First it was my Cavalier, then money issues, and now insurance. First, GMAC wanted a co-lessee. I found one, and now the insurance company wants me to insure my co-lessee as well. Now my co-lessee feels puzzled that I might harm his driving record, and by the sound of things, he seems to want to back out, leaving me in the cold. Sort of understand what my co-lessee is worried about. I heard is that in the event that if the car has an accident, ALL insured drivers on that car will be considered having an accident on their record. That's sort of what happened to my ma back then when my …

We're organizing a casual gathering of cars and car people...and looking for interesting cars and even more interesting people. This is a morning cruise-in type event Saturday May 5 at Michael's Resturaunt in Douglassville, PA (right on Rt 422 between Pottstown and Reading). Michael's is NOT sponsoring the event but has allowed us to use their parking lot (so buy a cup of coffee or have breakfast with us). There's no charge for the event as it's very casual. It's primiarily organized by the Delaware Valley Region of the Classic Car Club of America (with help from the region's Cadillac-LaSalle Club), but we're open to anyone and everyone. But I really think Panda Panda Panda by Deerhoof is the most annoying song ever. It sounds like something a 5 year old would walk around singing.

Story Link LiveScience.com livescience Staff livescience.com – Mon Aug 17, 10:18 am ET Traces of cocaine taint up to 90 percent of paper money in the United States, a new study finds. A group of scientists tested banknotes from more than 30 cities in five countries, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, and Japan, and found "alarming" evidence of cocaine use in many areas. U.S. and Canadian currency had the highest levels, with an average contamination rate of between 85 and 90 percent, while Chinese and Japanese currency had the lowest, between 12 and 20 percent contamination. The findings were presented yesterday at the 238th National Meeting o…

Just another one of those little annoyances in life that irks the hell out of me. The mouse I'm using on my computer right now is so damn useless. MT is all gushing for themselves over their latest issue, they have a minivan comparo. But get this, Sedona, Quest, Caravan, Odyssey. WHERE'S THE SIENNA? I'm no Toyota banger, but its clear the Sienna is one of the segment leaders. To top it off, they tested a Quest with a list price of over 40 grand. They could have just as easily tested an S model in the high twenties because they tested a Sedona with an MSRP of about 25 grand. "And its such a great value". Damn thing didn't even have power doors! Yet the Sedona takes 2nd even though the Quest has the nicer interior and handle the best of the bunch. The Sedonas second row doesn't even fold flat. While I haven't been much of a fan of Motor Trend lately, I picked up the Sept/Oct issue of Motor Trend Classic for an article on the Corvair, and an interesting piece on the '59 Chevy's fins. This morning I'm going through, page by page, checking out the mag, and I find an editorial by Angus Mackenzie, entitled "History Lesson", and I swear, this man somehow got inside my mind and published what I (and others) have been thinking and posting here for years. Here are some excerpts: "...Henry Ford: 'History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition...' The irony is Ford Motor Company might be in a whole lot less trouble right now if the folks who r…

4. Ford Edge 3. Toyota Highlander 2. Hyundai Santa Fe 1. Nissan Murano I'll try to weigh in more on this tomorrow. The article was WEAK. It flat out said at the end of the article that none of the four stood out and won the competition. But in the interest of needing to print a finishing order, they then ordered them they way they did, in my opinion on bias. They cited the Ford as being heavy and not having as much cargo space due to the fastback roofline. Its like they found one thing to bitch about about the Ford (weight) and played it up WAYYYY TO MUCH. Because the Ford, despite being heavy had some of the best acceleration times and the best handling t…

I've always been a car nut, but now I've developed an interest in motorcycles. I'm a total newbie in the moto area...so I took a safety course and bought a new 2006 Kawasaki Ninja 650R to learn on. What a blast...what a rush!! Any other moto fans, owners out there???

I don't think we need a new thread each month for this one, but I though a place to post pics of neat/interesting motorcycles would be fun. I spotted this at the local AdvanceAuto. I like the boxes he has on the side.

I know next to nothing about what's out there for motorcycles. I'm in the process of getting my motorcycle license. My very good friend who I'd like to go riding with has this: A 2015 Ducati Streetfighter. While I think it's a hot bike, I also am certain it is not for me. I don't want to be hunched forward and I want to be able to put a passenger on the back. The bike I've admired for a while is the Yamaha Roadliner Midnight I like the bike, but want something a bit more sporty without going to the extreme of the Ducati Thoughts?

So I've been itching to reduce my carbon footprint around town for a while, and what better way to do that than to drive a vehicle which will likely end up killing me! I've been eying bikes over the past year, and casually gone to dealers, Harley's 'Test our Metal' gig, and a big show last February. I've sat on quite a few different types, and seem to have found that I'd be most satisfied with something out of the 'cruiser' category. This might change, of course. My problem is down to figuring out what I should be looking at in this category. I have no real brand loyalty, and just want something that will suit my needs. I'm 200 pounds, about 6'1. The purpose of the bik…

Motors Of History, Including the 1916 Hybrid with Regenerative brakes! C&D did this history of motors that have made a mark, have to say awesome that in 1916 the first Hybrid powertrain was produced with regenerative brakes. Shows it just took 100 years to make it a variable reality. 14HP ICE and 6HP EV. http://www.caranddriver.com/flipbook/engines-au-naturel-an-unfettered-look-under-the-hood-at-some-of-historys-most-significant-engines Love the steam motors, turbines, etc. So cool. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set i…

From the CATO Institute. Mourning the Loss of a Great American Capitalist While the big news of the day wouldn’t seem to have a public policy angle, Michael Jackson’s death allows us to remember that such phenomenal career achievements can only be possible in an economic system that rewards and harnesses talent. The King of Pop’s creativity allowed him and his family to make hundreds of millions of dollars, yes, but it also created thousands of jobs in the music and marketing industries and brought joy to fans around the world. Whatever his personal eccentricities — perhaps, in part, as a result of them — Jackson represents a capitalit success story. No central pl…

We've already done the "create/bring back" thread and the "drop" thread, now here's one we were screaming to see....because we know it's what GM needs to do. I'd do the following: -Corvette to Pontiac (yes, it will be controversial, but why is the top dog sports car in GM's lineup a Chevy, the basic division?) -Sky to Pontiac (as the Solstice's mid-run freshening) -Torrent to GMC (what would a Torrent Denali be like?) -VUE to Pontiac (if Pontiac's going to have a Theta at all, they should have the coolest one) -HHR to Pontiac (should have been the Vibe's replacement) -Aveo to Saturn (Saturn just seems be a better place …

That's right. I've moved. Over the past few weeks, we moved from Lexington, Kentucky to a small town about thirty minutes away, Berea. We basically moved here room by room and got every box and bit of furniture here in a week's time. The computer was the last thing to go (along with the living room furniture) and it gave me the chance to be here without going away for a long period of time. We just got everything in place on Friday and finshed mowing the lawn yesterday, so we're all set and I'm ready to shoot the $h! about it. The house we moved to is located a mile from a junkyard, A&A Salvage. I know they've probably got over ten acres of cars…

No strick rules- suggest quoting a line(s), first person to ID it can post the next one, but do whatever you want. There's some great lines out there. Here's an easy starter: "She could be fixed up... she could. Oh, she could be really tough."

I was thinking about this lately. Most of us remember the absurd lines from movies. Some of the funniest lines are in Eddie Murphy movies. However, one Eddie Murphy movie, "Trading Places" has a lot of funny lines, but one of the most profound (in my mind). If you recall, Eddie Murphy is being prepped to make a switch to the Ivy League/Philly Main Line world in "Trading Places." The butler in the movie was really perceptive, especially after years of catering to the snobs that lived in that mansion. As he sends Eddie Murphy off into the limo, he says "just be yourself, they can't take that away from you." Wow. For some reason, that stuck. Have any movie lines r…

As I have posted repeatedly, I grew up in LA and left a few years after finishing undergrad, largely because my entire family picked up and moved north. I went to Atlanta instead because that's where a decent job offer together with a relocation reimbursement presented itself When I was a teenager, I thought movie star sightings were cool and that they must have it together...at least more so than the rest of us. I was never THAT taken by them, however. After I moved away and could see things clearly, I realized that a lot of them have poor values, low morals, don't know how to channel their money and fame, and, are generally pretty repulsive. This stretches from Eli…

ok, this is not meant to be an X-rated thread. but who do y'all think is a hot or handsome star that you wouldn't mind inspecting up close? If you had one (or two) chances to be up close and personal with a star, who would it be? C&G is always about equal time, so there is no limit as to whether its the strappin' men or the hot ladies. C'mon, who do you think is SMOKIN? I confess, I can't stop at one, so everyone else chip in too. What started this idea for me.....I saw a movie today with Claire Danes in it. I've always thought she was like WAY HOT. Damn she is fine. I would love to feed her grapes and watch the fan blow cool air all over her while we list…

I haven't seen many movies lately but the last one I saw was "The Commuter." Blame it on bargain Tuesday. I looked at the reviews and they were lukewarm. I went to see it and enjoyed it. It was sort of like "Unstoppable" (2010). It was probably also like "The Taking of Pelham 123," which I never saw. Has anyone seen it? The review said that it was predictable. I disagree. I didn't know who it could be until the very end. In fact, it's one of those movies you have to analyze backwards, sort of like film noir "Body Heat," where the pieces all make sense when looked at in the rear view mirror. If you've seen it, did you feel that more fleshing out of the d…

We all have those movies we've seen several times over. Here's my list: James Bond movies Diamonds Are Forever - 11x On Her Majesty's Secret Service - about 7x Live and Let Die - about 7 x Moonraker - about 7 x For Your Eyes Only - about 7 x View To a Kill - about 4 x The World is Not Enough - approx 4 x Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop - the original - 5 x (opening chase scene only - forward and reverse - about 20x) Trading Places - about 5 x Other Body Heat - 9x - I had to see it a second time to unravel the intricacy of the plot...and then I got hooked. Don't leave the room/theater in the last 15 minutes for the "yearbook scene." Which movies qualify you a…

Within the last couple of weeks, I saw "Slumdog Millionaire." I thought it would a comedy, when someone told me about the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" theme. It was anything but. It was probably one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen If anyone is feeling down, see this movie and you will feel better...we don't have it that bad. A co-worker has also lent me "Shawshank Redemption" and "Primal Fear." They are mid-90s movies I've never seen. Both are also really powerful....the first for all its messages about life (and an unbelievable Morgan Freeman performance) and the second one for the way the courtroom drama and forensics stuff plays out, not to mentio…

That time has finally come, and I'm heading back to my "roots" (well, 4 year kind of roots by way of college)...Philly. I ended my 7 month tenure at the dealer in Maryland I've worked for on the 31st, and while it was a fun ride that I did almost too well at, it was way too far to drive everyday, in the wrong area and other things. As of now I'm going to be doing the same in Philly, for however long it goes, but with nicely improved perks and pay, and 15 minutes from home in the city, I think...as soon as we figure out where that is. I may be working for Acura, or Mazda, stores and have a few different options to pick from after interviewing Friday. Now, if only we coul…
