I signed up for an environmental class that dealt with environmental planning and stuff along those lines. I originally took it because it actually sounded kind of interesting and I was genuinely interested in the subject, but I dropped it like a yesterday's news, mostly because I realized I was taking too many credits (18) along with having an independent project and going to work about 15 hours a week. Just too much stuff to juggle. There were some real strong opinions in that class...polar opposite too. On one hand, you had the conservative ag/forestry/civil engineering kids and on the other you had the liberal political science/environmental studies/design kids. …

I spent 6 days in Las Vegas (106 to 108) every day. You walk out the door and it's like an oven. One day, walking around the strip with a friend, it started to rain from a thunderstorm. It was great. Followed by 2 days in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs)...same thing. I will say that the mountains shooting out of the desert floor is quite dramatic but that weather just knocks you out. Now, I went to grad school somewhere reasonably cold. I remember that as being painful and that driving in snow was kind of scary. However, most really hot places have a great other 9 months and you can stay in A/C for the remainder. Which could you handle better...living somewher…

Mexican, Italian, and Chinese may as well be American...they don't count. Need to try Cuban... Haven't had Ethiopian in a minute..... But dammit, I feel like I can eat Indian food three times a week, two days in a row, and never get sick of it. Got so bad that one month, I decided I had to avoid the Indian spots. I can get with most all Indian cooking, from spinach curry (sag) to tandoori chicken drumsticks (best dark meat there is, second only to tandoori thighs) to gulab jamun. I mean, really, I just did the Indian buffet over the weekend, and I'm looking to see if I feel like paying $11 to go this week. Any of you guys like this?

Money is not a great thing... having said that, the wife has brought to my attention that financially we're not in a "good place". Having bought the SKY last year and it's limited use has always been a sore spot with the wife (the home equity loan payment plus full insurance coverage don't help). She feels that by selling the car to pay off other debts would be the best thing financially, although she does say that she doesn't want the car to go. So anyway, if I had to sell the SKY, is anyone here interested in buying it? I'm trying to weigh out my options, like going back to my selling Saturn dealer and seeing what they'd offer to buy it, put an ad in AutoShopper o…

Well, it's getting to be that time of the year again! As many of you know, the Dream Cruise is scheduled for August 18th. Just wanted to see if anyone that isn't local is planning on attending. Or if you are local, when you will be down there, since chances are you wont just be there on one day. Some people have probably already seen this... http://www.detroitnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...UTO05/708040377 Mightymouse and I will probably be spending time around 12 1/2 mile and maybe a little time up in Pontiac. So if you think you will be in the area, let us know! Its always nice to be able to put faces to names!

Dear all. My better half LOVES Saab - and she is trying to find a suitable SUV to replace her aging (180k miles) Expedition. We recently found out that there is up to $7,000 rebate on the 9-7x, which puts the car SMACK in the middle of Explorer and Equinox price range. It also allows her to have the best of both worlds - an SUV that can tow and is a real BOF SUV and a Saab (she is a Texan - do not question her on her love for BOF ) We have been looking around and all the models available are the 4.2l I6 models ... but that engine is fine as far as reliability and such goes - I had the impression that it is a bulletproof and smooth engine ... anyone wants to weigh on…

I am an honest man. I lied to my father. As some of you know, I like to go camping at a particular campground in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. It's a gay/lesbian campground, and further, it is clothing optional. I go two or three times a season. Without being too specific, over the last four years I've been going I've been telling my parents (seperately, they're divorced) that I've been going "camping upstate"... which sufficed... until my dad mentioned one day that he delivers tires (he retired from Armstrong floor company after 41 years and now drives a pickup truck, delivering tires for a local merchant) to a customer in the same town. I spoke up and said…

By Jonathan Adams and Max Hirsch Newsweek International Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue - China's recent rise has brought with it a new conventional wisdom: that everyone must learn Mandarin. But no one's told South Korea yet. Though Chinese is increasingly popular here, the nation seems to be suffering a profound case of English fever. South Korea now boasts at least 10 "English villages"—mock Western communities complete with post offices, pharmacies and the like where kids can practice their language skills. An entire English-only town is due to open on Cheju Island in 2010. And one Internet-based company here even offers English courses for fetuses in the womb. Next door, m…

This morning my father passed away rather suddenly. He was 64. Last Friday he had a massive heart attack. His heart stopped beating for 21 minutes before the paramedics revived him. Unfortunately, his brain activity was minimal. We pulled the ventilator on Sunday, and he died early this morning. As tragic as this is, its a realization that I should have told him I loved him more. I never got to thank him for instilling in me my love for cars, the outdoors, and life. I also realize that I am now the eldest in the family and the next to go. I realize that grandfatherhood is coming sooner than I would like. I have always felt young, but I realize that its only a …

A lot of people do f*c*ing idiotic things while driving. Several bother me. At the top of my list is this: 1. DOG OR CAT IN YOUR LAP, BETWEEN YOU AND STEERING WHEEL Good Gawd, if you love your animal, that is the LAST place you would put them. In those classes you can take (at least in CA) to hide moving violations, they tell you this. In an accident, the animal doesn't have a chance and will be flattened. Next ones for me: 2. Reading a book, like a paperback novel 3. Make up application There are others, but these lead my list. What irks you?

The Chevrolet/Cadillac dealer I work at is right up the street from a Wendy's. (you know, as in Dave Thomas) Money being very tight right now instead of taking my giant tank to a local joint for lunch I just walk over to the Wendy's & have lunch there, you know dollar menu and all. The other day I'm waiting to get my $4 worth of fast food when a middle aged couple (early 50s) approach the cashier. I notice that the guy is holding a brochure for a 2007 Tundra in his hand, along with some pricing info. written down on a crude worksheet. If possible, without giving away the car, give a specific detail (s) to separate the car, making it easier, and not so vague. Along with the car, state the year it was officially shown by GM, may it be as a concept or production vehicle. NO SPY SHOTS! Yup, picked up another one a couple weeks back. '86 V-6 4-sp manual. The motor and tranny had been all rebuilt, but it had a miss in the motor. I went back a week later, took my chances and brought it home. Ended up just being bad wires. It runs good at speed but doesn't idle good right now, the guy put a new timing chain on and I'm fairly sure it's off a tooth. So I may have to dig into that. Other than that I ended up putting on new shocks/struts, new brake pads, new caliper and rebuilt the other 3, turned all rotors, painted the ground effects silver, new tires with matching wheels and detailed it up a bit. Got $1500 into it with all the new parts. Bought it as a dail…

'Living sculpture' meant to raise awareness about global warming' BETTMERALP, Switzerland - Hundreds of naked people formed a “living sculpture” on Switzerland’s Aletsch glacier Saturday, hoping to raise awareness about climate change. The photo shoot by Spencer Tunick, the New York artist famous for his pictures of nude gatherings in public settings worldwide, was designed to draw attention to the effects of global warming on Switzerland’s shrinking glaciers. “The melting of the glaciers is an indisputable sign of global climate change,” said the environmental group Greenpeace, which co-organized the event. It said most Swiss glaciers will disappear by 2080 if glob…

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Brazil’s public health system will begin providing free sex-change operations in compliance with a court order, the Health Ministry said Friday. Ministry spokesman Edmilson Oliveira da Silva said the government would not appeal Wednesday’s ruling by a panel of federal judges giving the government 30 days to offer the procedure or face fines of $5,000 a day. “The health minister was prompted by the judges’ decision,” Silva said. “But we already had a technical group studying the procedure with the idea of including it among the procedures that are covered.” Article continues: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20323334/

OK, as some of you know, I am going to be in my niece's wedding in Scotland in July 08. All the men in it have to wear kilts, much to my dismay. Because it is so far away, I have to do my 1st kilt fitting tomorrow night, so the measurements can be sent back to Scotland so my kilt will be ready and waiting for me when I arrive. So tomorrow night I will be in Media, PA, being fitted for my dress/kilt. I guess you can tell I'm not into the spirit of the thing yet, nothing a few beers won't cure. :AH-HA_wink:

I went kayaking yesterday for a couple of hours on a calm, peaceful lake. Well, my kayak doesn't have a backrest, so to get paddling decently I hold myself in a semi-reclined position, I find it works better than sitting straight up or laying mostly reclined. The problem is that it kills the abs. In facts, here is the text I sent a couple of people last night as I was floating around the fishing access before I pulled out: One of the replies I got was from my friend Brandon: I didn't even know what to say, I have to admit it was a kinda funny thing for him to say.

I have to wait and see how it does but i think it will do as good as the GTO, but i hope a i am wrong. As the crowds around it where pretty big as people where trying to figure out what it was. it looks like the new emblem is staying. the wheels look nice and under the hood is very clean. I decided that I want Satellite Radio. I spend a lot of time on the road or in the field, so I figure that it would be a wise investment in my future entertainment. My Suburban is XM ready so I could add that easily, and my Pioneer deck in my Impala could have either tuner and antenna added to it for about 50 bucks on ebay and an hour's worth of tinkering around in the car. You can have 2 tuners for 20 bucks a month with either service, so I would probably have one dedicated system in one of the vehicles. If I were to go with Sirius I would put a dedicated tuner in my Impala and then have a Mobile unit in my Suburban that I could take out on the lake in the summer, in…

ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian farmer held hostage in Mali for 12 days by a gang of men who had posed as an online love interest has urged others to be careful when seeking romance on the Internet. Des Gregor, 56, traveled to the West African nation last month to meet his supposed bride, whom he had met on the Internet, and collect a dowry of gold bars worth $85,000. But when he arrived, the wheat and sheep farmer was abducted by a gang of armed bandits who bound him, beat him with a machete and stole his cash and credit cards. I was in Northern Calif. over the past weekend. I was in San Francisco one day. It is truly a beautiful city, if not one of the most beautiful in the world. One day and I start to feel claustrophobic and, after being in Europe, it's less compact than those cities, with the ability to pull over to a meter or parking spot being quite common, other than in the Financial District or by Fisherman's Wharf. I think I would tolerate the suburbs (notably Walnut Creek) better. Still expensive, the prices have come down some as it had become truly absurd and stuff wasn't selling that easily. Berkeley absolutely makes my hair stand on its ends. Any liberal college town full of …

It doesn't bother me, but it makes me perplexed as to what I emit. Most of the time, I'm in my own world and someone interrupts my silence. Just yesterday, I got asked about train routes on Portland's light rail, and I was wearing a Montreal t-shirt, for God's sake. One day, when I did live up here in the mid-90s, I got asked directions on the way to work, during my lunch hour and going home from work. THREE times in a day. The funniest: - asked for directions in Buenos Aires in November 2005 when I went to South America - asked for directions in Munich, Germany while walking through a rural suburb last month How about you? Maureen McCormick was Marcia Brady, for you younger members who may not know. In the 70s and 80s, that look was an LA mainstay, practically a dime a dozen. Nowadays, in LA, you don't see anybody like that. So where are they? The same is true in Portland. In the last 10 years, WASPY pissy little Portland (I hate Northwesterners) doesn't look as white and pissy as it did 10 years ago. I know where the Maureen McCormicks are. In Chico and places like that, which is where I happen to be today en route to Sacramento. The Underworked American 08-14-2007 | Link to Original Article @ The Boston Globe IF YOU'RE WORKING next week -- a time designed by nature for fleeing office parks and sweltering, odoriferous cities -- you could be forgiven for feeling a touch of self-pity: poor, overworked American. Read about labor trends and you'd feel even more beleaguered. In May, a report titled "No-Vacation Nation," from a Washington, D.C., think tank, rubbed our noses in the fact that we get comically brief vacations compared with Europeans. Then there was the recent Harvard Business Review article decrying the rise of the "extreme job": More and more high achievers are forced to choose between…

Now in the case of some of these cars here that might be putting it a bit too strongly, after all, it was often the person behind the wheel that was to blame for the reputation attached to the car. Nevertheless we have put together a list of 50 cars that have, perhaps, captured the public’s imagination for all the wrong reasons. Whether by accident, design, or even bad design, the cars we have selected will remain in the public eye for years to come. After you click the Link, click on, "Launch our 50 most infamous cars story" Link: http://cars.uk.msn.com/News/Top_ten_articl...umentid=5419390

I don't mean vacation destinations here, I mean a place without neighbors you can see without driving. A place where property values aren't measured in dollars, and "society" is a distant rumor. I think I want to spend a few years in a place like that. Maybe even the rest of my life. What place would you nominate?

To-may-to. To-mah-to. Po-tay-to. Po-tah-to. Auto Show. Car show. What’s the difference? You can pronounce the food in whatever way your linguistical leanings allow, but there’s a big difference between a car show and an auto show such as the 2007 Delaware Auto Show, scheduled for Oct. 5-7 at the Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. Put simply, car shows are for classic, antique and tuner cars – vehicles you want to admire close up. At those look-but-don’t-touch events, owners don’t really like for you to touch the cars or get in them. Auto shows offer, however, the coolest, latest, sleekest, hottest rides available now and in the immediate future for the gearhead…

I swear that I can see a UFO right now. My mom, sister, and I have been watching the East sky for about a half hour now and there is a bright light up there, it looks like a star. Well, occassionally it hops back and forth. It's between two trees by where we live, and it's gone over and above the tree to the right now. We see a green and red light flicker around it, and like I said, we can sometimes see it literally blink then jump spots. Seriously, go look and confirm this for yourself!

Just wanted to get a grip on who all is going to be here on Saturady to see Fly off on his journey. I don't know what we are going to be doing (after wasting a few hours checking out cars and talking cars). Going to have dinner somewhere has been suggested, which might be the best idea because it is going to be very hot and humid here according to the forecast. Anyway, I wanted to warn the neighbors (I live on a shared driveway) about the cars that will be showing up, so please confirm that you are coming in this thread. Should be a good time.

I'm a skeptic when it comes to UFOs, but if these are faked then they are DAMN good because they look like something out of a Hollywood movie. They were caught by two different people at two different locations on August 6th, 2007. First video with comments http://www.metacafe.com/watch/761872/ufo_haiti/ First and second videos http://mienfoks.blogspot.com/2007/08/ufos-...t-on-video.html

My tattered, mis-matched Instrument Panel needs a rework. The thing that happened was I found a pile of instrumentation, beside the road and garbage picked some Camaro and other clusters from this gearhead down the street- truly a sign. I'm not kidding. They are GM and match my cable end! I have done many modifications to interiors, now it's your turn! here is a before-(we don't want anything like this) I envision a sweeping, late model Riveria style panel, with an overhang or brow that runs from door panel to door panel(top pad like a gen 3 Camaro also...) Pencils pens chops please feel free to share your ideas for the best I/P …

Well, luckily the "curse" hasn't befell it, but head gasket woes have. I took it to the GM dealer the other day and went to pick it up today and found out that the #5 cylinder has moisture and coolant in it. This is bad timing because I go back to school in a week and they won't be able to to get it in for at least two weeks. Also, the GM dealer here is being bought out by the Ford dealer, so it may end up being serviced over at the Ford dealer costing more money due to higher labor costs there. The GM dealer will repair it for $800, and another place we checked can do it for $650-700. I will be buying a new car in May, so my options are either A) pour $800 into a c…

So today I made a trip to my favorite junkyard for the Shadow. I was hoping to find one with a 2.5L so I could see how the vacuum hoses by the throttle body hooked up. here were a few disconnected and I couldn't figure out where they went, and neither could Sixty8. As you may know, I finally replaced the value cover gasket...so there should no longer be any major oil leaks. My first real work on an engine, and it was very rewarding to it myself. Anyway, all they had was a 3.0 V6 Duster, and a 2.5 Spirit, but the Spirit had different vacuum hose routing. With that attempt failed, I decided to wonder around and see what else they had. There was a Mercury Meteor for $1…

Wed Aug 8, 1:13 AM ET WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry. ADVERTISEMENT Pat and Sheena Wheaton say they will get around the decision by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by officially naming their son Superman but referring to him as 4Real, the New Zealand Herald newspaper has reported. The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realising their baby was "for real". They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the regi…

At around 8:20 PM this evening, the Curse hunted down our Saturn Aura. We were in our local Dairy Queen parking lot when a white Dodge Neon backed out and sucker punched our one month-old car in the left-front quarter, leaving a nasty dent in the bumper cover, leaving the hood off level, and creasing the left front quarter panel. The damage doesn't seem to inhibit the car's ability to drive and function properly, but then again, we've all heard a certain tale of another car famous to our forums having similar damage and declared to be totaled by the insurance company. And all of this coming just two days after we also washed and detailed the car and just one day before…

I like potholes, I really do...especially the ones on the Lucerne..in fact I wouldn't even mind a set and I don't mind if people do it to there cars if done right. A dark blue 300C with 4 ventiports on each side that looked like arrow heads is cool. But this...is just stupid. Those round aftermarket ones...I see them everywhere. 4 on each side of a 4-banger 90's Accord, 3 on each side of a new 4-banger Camry..and the worst by far... 4 of them on each side of a 90's A4 and another 4 on the rear lower bumper. Do people even know what they mean when they slap these things on? According to this guy his older A4 was packing a W12 or something.

My current daily driver (as most of you know) is a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3. Recently I ran across a Trans Am that looks to be in my price range (finally) So, I'm going to drive the Pontiac tomorrow and if I can swing it I *might* trade. But I'm really attached to the Focus and it's excellent gas mileage. THE BREAKDOWN 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 * 2.0L DOHC I-4/ 5 speed manual * 84,900 miles * Excellent gas mileage/Generally fun to drive * Paid off in roughly 2 years * Positive equity 1998 or 1999 (Not sure which) Pontiac Trans Am * LS1/ 6 speed manual * 85,000 miles * All the options including leather * $8900 takes it home * Not a WS6 unfortunately The main thing about…

Anyone have any experience with these cars? General reliability? How is the 3.5L DOHC V6? I drove one a few years ago and loved it. Far better then the other W-bodies IMO. I am thinking of ditching my 07 Cobalt to save some cash. thoughts and comments appreciated.

As I've shared previously in different threads, I was startled awake on the morning of July 26. My alarm went off as usual at 6am, but 2 minutes later ... BOOOOOOMMMMMM ... SNAP/CRACKLE ... HISSSSSSS. Then, dead silence. I sat bolt upright in bed ... realizing everything electric (or so I thought) was off. I scampered out of my room headed up the steps, instinctively turning on the stairway light .... and, wowa, ... light. So, I turned back into my room ... and flipped some of the circuit breakers and the entire house had power again. Next door neighbor heard it, too. We believe it was a lightning strike. My VCR is no more [replaced with one an Uncle gave me], my …
