Buick
Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

I love Buicks. My parents drove them and still do, and I learned how to drive on a LeSabre and an Estate Wagon. My first car was a Skylark. It rocked. Buicks have impeccable quality, power, and in most cases, pretty cool styling. I'd love to buy one, but they need to make a car for 30-somethings, without abandoning their core market. Here's what GM should do with Buick: 1. Develop a coupe. Lexus has one, so does Mercedes, Infiniti, Acura and Volvo. If you want to be a premium brand, you need a 2 door. For most of Buick's existence, they've offered one, except for the past 8 years or so. Remember Skylark, LeSabre, Riviera,…

I sold the Park Avenue Ultra shown in my signature. After 2 years and 40,000 miles it was time to let somebody else enjoy it before pushing it over the 50,000 mile mark. I never intended to keep it forever. One reason is that when it was originally offered to me I was led to believe that it had a shale interior; when I drove from Florida to North Carolina and saw it, the interior was gray. Despite realizing then I had been had by this country-boy dealer, being the good sport that I am I took the car anyway and made the best of the situation. I have been shopping around for another vehicle and can't make up my mind what one to drive. I was offered a lease payment…

I noticed that there are a good many unsold Lacrosses on the GM BuyPower website, just over 40 here in Florida. They are mostly vehicles with goofy equipment packages that raise the MSRP without making the car worthwhile. An example of this is a CXS without the Gold Convenience Package but with sunroof, MP3 player, stabilitrack, etc. I thought they cleared all these out with their employee pricing scheme. How do they think they'll sell this orphaned inventory?

Okay, I remember one model year in the last generation Buick Century, around 2002 or 2003 or so, reading that the grille received a minor change... that and the Regal. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? And if so, does anyone know what the changes were because I never could tell, and I saw a Century today and it made me think of this. China will be getting a fuel-sipping version of the new LaCrosse in the near future. The automaker revealed the LaCrosse Hybrid at an event yesterday in Shanghai. The hybrid system is comprised of a 1.8L SIDI four-cylinder, electric variable transmission, and a 1.5 KwH lithium-ion battery. Buick is keeping quiet on performance specs, but does say the model will reach 62 miles per hour in 8.9 seconds and return 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers (about 50 MPG). Compared to the last-generation LaCrosse eAssist, the new LaCrosse Hybrid is 35 percent more efficient. Other fuel saving tricks include grille shutters, electronic climate control compressor, and a thermal energ…

I stumbled across the website earlier today. I found it encouraging that the Enclave was on display at the autoshow. I'm looking forward to 2007's show. I hope to see Holden and possibly the spy-pic'd Buick Royaum replacement return to China.

At first we thought it had to be a mistake. General Motors is already paying customers to take the 2008 Buick Enclave off their hands? It's not even on dealer lots yet, but Automotive News reports Buick is offering $1,000 "Conquest Bonus Cash" and 4.9% financing available on the $32k+ CUV. Though the "Conquest Cash" is intended to draw non-GM-driving customers away from the competition, no matter the name, rebates on brand new vehicles are obvious admissions of overpricing that only enforce car shoppers' addiction to cash-back offers. If the Enclave performs as well and is as reliable as it is gorgeous, it shouldn't need any incentives. On the other hand, a drop-dea…

I still think this would make a nice addition to the Buick lineup as a "4-door coupe" type of vehicle that could draw younger customers into Buick showrooms. The engine choices would need to be altered for the U.S. market though. The turbo 4 would need to be the base engine with the 3.0 DI V6 serving as the optional engine. These engine offerings would keep the Regal positioned below the upcoming LWB Eps II LaCrosse, which I believe will have the 3.0 DI V6 as standard equipment and the 3.6 DI V6 as an optional engine. DETROIT — General Motors Co. said Tuesday the rollout of its new 2010 Buick LaCrosse is being delayed for a few weeks due to quality concerns. Speaking to analysts and reporters during a conference call on August sales, GM's vice president of U.S. sales Mark LaNeve said about 300 to 400 of the cars were shipped in August, but further deliveries are on hold until the company works out what it called "quality issues." The company wouldn't offer specifics on exact problems with the LaCrosse, but LaNeve said they "were not serious but were enough to delay us three or four weeks while we made sure they were fixed so that our customers didn't have any problems." I think this has been covered, but I think Buick really screwed up on the Lucerne grill. First, the shape is homely, not bold. Second, they black out the grill on the upmarket CXS and CXL trying to appeal to "Euro" buyers. Bring out the chrome baby. Despite all that I wouldn't mind owning a Ming Blue CX with a cloth bench and that homely but shiny grill. But I'd wait for the $$$ to come down or buy a one year old low mileage rental.

Wheels: Lucerne should broaden Buick's appeal to younger set Thursday, February 02, 2006 By Don Hammonds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Growing up in the 1950s, one of my favorite memories was an olive green 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible that my next-door neighbor proudly drove around town. That car had that indefinable something called presence. You couldn't take your eyes off of it and there was a certain air of romance about it as it headed down the road. Buick always stood for just that -- presence, glamour and the romance of the American road. And thanks to Buick's newest full size sedan, the Lucerne, General Motors' upper-end car division has recaptured that past…

Milford, Mich. - Not unlike a finely crafted musical instrument, the 2006 Buick Lucerne - the nameplate's most premium model - was literally "tuned by ear" using advanced acoustic measurement and analytical technologies. Throughout Lucerne's development process, GM engineers regularly used a sophisticated sound recording device nicknamed "Aachen HEAD" (pronounced AH-KIN) to capture sounds within Lucerne's interior while the car is in motion. An Aachen HEAD is a digital recording tool that closely matches the way humans process sound by preserving the binaural attributes of the sound inside or outside of a moving vehicle. The device, which…

It's been about six years since GM introduced the Lambdas (Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Terrain, and Saturn Outlook) to the world and they're beginning to get long in the tooth. GM is quietly working on next generation of these models and some spy shots have come out of Buick Enclave with added camoflage. The pictures show the Enclave will be retaining it's large size as the current model. Also, the front end gets a new grill with longer, thinner grille slats spaced further out. The back end doesn't show any changes thanks to all of the camouflage. Source: Inside Line View full article

Since there's a lull in the Buick forum this weekend I figured I'd post this bit of news. Not so much about the car- but you know you have a loyal fanbase when they refuse to let a murderer and a rapist take their car. http://www.lenconnect.com/articles/2005/12...news/news02.txt

I read in a 2007 Lucerne promo of the "NEW DOUBLE ISOLATED” powertrain mounting system. Does anyone know whether this is different/better than they used in 2006? My own experience with my 2006 CX is that the engine noise isolation is not as good as it could be, and not as good as it was in my previous 1999 LeSabre. Otherwise, it's a nice, quiet car, especially after the source of an annoying vibration under acceleration was found & corrected by the dealer. If better mounts are now available, I'd be interested in retrofitting them to my 2006, if that's possible.

Saw an ad today for the Buick LaCrosse while reading my Hispanic Business magazine and noticed something that made me laugh. The ad shows the LaCrosse CXS and ES 350 side by side and has a list of features and awards, but the very last line says "Desaceleracion del vehiculo robado" It basically translates to "stolen vehicle slow down." It then says "no disponable" (not available) under the ES and "OnStar/ 1 ano estandar" (one year standard) under the Buick. I know GM has been advertising this for a while now, but it made me think of the ES's acceleration issue... Made me wonder if it was meant to be a slap in the face...

In the years since the Friends of Buick project launched, several C&G members have e-mailed, asking when the site would be updated. It has been renewed this morning, at http://www.friendsofbuick.com. The older version had much information on the Perception Gap, which (in particular) got quite a bit of airplay around here back in 2006, when it was presented to General Motors. Most of that will be uploaded again; pardon our dust, the migration to the new format is a work in progress. In the meantime, we were hoping to get your feedback. Given the aims of the site, as defined (briefly) at http://www.friendsofbuick.com/Default.aspx?mode=about, what would you like …

So, Garmin has a new commercial in which the guy is driving a Lucerne... with a Garmin GPS mounted on top of his dash. I was amused that although the car offers two forms of navigation for him to choose from, he's using a Garmin. Yes, I know it's a commercial. Was just amused.

There are some flattering spy photos on the internet of the next Astra convertible, which thankfully eschews a heavy, complicated folding hardtop for a canvas roof. What say you on a Verano convertible? I am surprised no one posted a link to the pictures yet. It looks great.

Today I received an e-mail from Buick about a "signature Tiger Woods hat." Here is a direct link. I personally don't care about Tiger Woods or his hat, but I'm glad to see continued promotion in support of Lucerne.

In mid-June, GM will change from its present TV message to promoting Buick, according to David Welch and David Kiley in Business Week. "The primary focus is on hooking younger buyers who have zero loyalty to GM vehicles. Buick, while popular in China, has come to be considered a fogy brand at home (average buyer age: 66). Americans love a makeover, so that is the theme Buick has latched on to. One ad has a plastic surgery spin with the catch line: 'Nip. Tuck. Weld.' To reel in younger buyers, ads for Buick's curvy new LaCrosse sedan will feature its array of Lexus-caliber gadgetry, including a hard drive for music, a system that alerts drivers if someone is in their bli…

Having been on car lots on the other side of the border a few times since the car's release, I have seen some W-bodies branded Allure. I don't think it's a bad name. LaCrosse is a sport, yet so many posters have deemed this car to have a "feminine quality." I like to think of it as sexless, but I don't think it's as sporty as the name implies...even in CXS form. I think the name Allure is somewhat similar to the name Intrigue. And I believe that the LaCrosse/Allure fills the void (sadly) left behind by the very tasteful Olds Intrigue. I give my nod to the name Allure for both sides of the border, though it's a little late for that at this stage in the game. Your…

Have you seen the color chips for the new Buicks, particularly for the LaCrosse? Disappointing. The Dark Mocha is basically a dark root beer brown and not a sable type shade. The Midnight Blue is almost black. The Gold Mist looks like a urine sample. The 2 reds are pretty mainstream; that is, no deep burgundy or a "cool" shade like Mulberry seen on Cadillacs and SUVs in years past Lastly, the absence of a Light Quartz equivalent is bad news for a brand that sells well in light blues. Overall, I find the color palette too dark. Do you agree?

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXL FWD The Looks... So at my dealer, while my tires were getting put on my salesman and I went out for a cruise in the 2010 LaX they got in last week... Let me tell you this car is STUNNING in person, it has dramatic lines, the Diamond white paint and chrome wheels "were just right". This car is a show stopper on the outside, but I already knew that from the photographs, it was the inside I wanted to see. The car was amazing once inside the "claw" door grab handles looked great but were a tad small for someone with large hands. As for the rest of the interior it was amazing the shifter was crisp, leather soft and comfortable, the d…
