GM's Collapsing Ladder By Eugene Robinson Friday, November 25, 2005 It's sad to watch General Motors fall apart like a rusty old Malibu, and not just because so many workers are losing their jobs. When I was growing up in the '60s, GM was more than just an icon of American capitalism, more than just the company that made and sold half the nation's automobiles. General Motors gave me my first schematic diagram of the American dream. These days we'd call the GM strategy an exercise in market segmentation, but back then I would have called it "moving on up." With its five distinct lines of passenger cars, GM created a climbable staircase of …

GM’s New Brand Strategy: Chevy Uber Alles By Andrew Dederer July 31st, 2006 1,000 Views When Alfred P. Sloan took the reins at General Motors, he had a clear vision of the company’s future: “a car for every purse and purpose." Sloan’s business model– offer customers a wide range of vehicles across distinct brands and encourage them to move “up” within the portfolio– was wildly successful. GM soon replaced Ford as US market leader, and never looked back. Ninety years later, the same structure is in place, but the car market has changed. And GM’s portfolio is part of the problem, not the solution. While most enthusiasts recognize the philosophy behind Sloa…

Premier Buick-Pontiac-GMC Dealership Opens Carl Black Buick-Pontiac-GMC Unveils New Design 3.1.07 STUART, FLA. - The first all-new Buick-Pontiac-GMC showroom in the United States will open its doors here Thursday. After being destroyed by hurricanes Francis and Jeanne in 2004, Carl's Buick-Pontiac-GMC at 2445 S.E. Federal Highway has put the finishing touches on a completely new, modern exterior and interior design. "I'm proud to participate in this great occasion," said John Larson, general manager of GM's Buick-Pontiac-GMC divisions in Detroit. "Carl's is part of a growing number of dealerships that have combined the three brands under one roof. He is also one…

from http://www.automobear.com: ______________________________________ The Quest for Relevance in Refinement Buick; Jaguar; Lincoln, and Lancia ... One might include some Chrysler products – the Pacifica crossover comes to mind – and the Mercury division among our brief list of brands which espouse premium qualities, to varying degrees, with – alternately – both bespoke and plebian platforms in their recent histories. Yet, both for simplicity and for the sake of attempting a discussion of inherent dynamics over peripheral differentiation, we will talk here of Buick; Jaguar; Lincoln, and Lancia. Buick; Jaguar; Lincoln, and Lancia practice (most of the time)…

http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0.../A01-322175.htm Can new lineup of big SUVs revive GM? Ailing automaker hopes 12 full-size models will invigorate a segment that has been shrinking. By Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News WARREN -- General Motors Corp. on Tuesday unveiled the most important new vehicles in its effort to turn around its troubled North American operations. But by betting big on a redesigned fleet of 12 full-size SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade, GM is trying to buck a consumer shift toward smaller, more fuel-efficient cars and crossover vehicles. Rising gas prices have hit the large SUV segment hard th…

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman is criticizing GM for offering to "cap" gas prices at $1.99 for certain GM vehicles sold in Florida and California. "Is there a company more dangerous to America's future than General Motors? Surely, the sooner this company gets taken over by Toyota, the better this country will be," Friedman wrote, comparing GM to "a crack dealer looking to keep his addicts on a tight leash" by making the offer. Bob Lutz has shot back that Friedman "is so 'over the top' that it borders on psychosis." ( Go get 'em, Bob!) To view the article, which appeared in the 6/1 Detroit News, click here.

No, this certainly isn't another "Red-Ink" Rick diatribe. Buickman has done enough of those. Instead, some praise of Rick Wagoner from Peter DeLorenzo, for things Wagoner is doing right. Let's make sure that, in the midst of daily challenges to GM and the American auto industry, including the latest proposal from Jerry York, we don't forget the things which are right about GM. It is excerpted from the autoextremist.com website: " . . . I have to give Rick his due, he is focused on engineering a turnaround in the 'right' way - and I see real, demonstrative progress. When I say the 'right' way, I mean that Rick Wagoner has always tried to take into account the constit…

You've heard of the wedding crashers. How 'bout the party crashers? Toyota Motor Corp., riding high and living large thanks to its status as the most profitable automaker in world history, spent $800,000 to rent out Chicago's Millennium Park Thursday fora VIP-only dealer event. Since the park opened a little more tha a year ago, tourists have flocked to see its fountains, Frank Gehry architecture and Cloud Gate, a 110-ton, beanshaped stainless-steel sculpture. Luckily, General MOtors Corp. came to the rescue of bummed-out sightseers shut out of the park. A cadre of GM reps showed up and handed out Fisher-Price slide viewers with images of the Cloud Gate…

About 65 percent there: General Motors making progress Posted 12/11/2006 1:00:00 AM by Todd Lassa Link to Full Article @ Motor Trend Community Even on its own, GM looks much better now than it did last year, when it lost $10.6 billion. The automaker drove home its reasons for cautious optimism at a media event I attended last Thursday night. Product chief Bob Lutz talked of how the company is returning to a culture of great cars and trucks in order to survive, even thrive. But first, CEO Rick Wagoner (pictured speaking at the recent L.A. auto show) spoke of impending financial results. This time last year, GM was $2.3 billion in the hole. Much of the remaining …

How come there is not more news on GM investing $1 billion in their next-gen fullsize trucks? What can we expect from these new trucks, there is a new diesel coming we know that, but from the spy pics I've seen of upcoming models there is not much to be excited about. Unless these are stopgap models until newly freshened sheetmetal comes out?

Anybody hear tonights news, with the nonchalant announcement that gas will hit $3.00/gal in the next few weeks, but that by next summer, it could be up another $.25 ! Then the newscaster said that "the Big TWO" are pointing fingers at the large oil companies and accusing them of gouging, and the oil companies are answering back that Detroit has not done anything to improve efficiency in the past 10 years! Who in the hell cares?!!!! I'd throw them both in jail for raping the U.S public! This nonchalant attitude about these sky-rocketing prices, with no rational explanations is going to kill American industry, and cause one helluva crash! Then nobody will b…

1-800-Clunkers? Florist keeps getting car calls Story Link By MICHAEL TARM, Associated Press Writer Michael Tarm, Associated Press Writer – Tue Aug 18, 6:27 pm ET CHICAGO, Ill. – The government is giving cash for clunkers. It isn't sending flowers. Still, a small-town florist in central Illinois has been fielding hundreds of calls a day from people inquiring about the rebate program after General Motors began advertising a national toll-free cash-for-clunkers number that's nearly identical to the shop's toll-free number. The Flower Corner in Clinton is being inundated with more than 150 calls a day, overwhelming its staff of six and threatening to damage busin…

GM has recalled its all-new crossovers, the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, because of potentially faulty airbag sensors. The recall affects all 13,032 of the vehicles on the road. The problem stems from a faulty sensor that controls the front airbags’ deployment. It will also prevent the vehicle from alerting owners of a malfunction. GM says the problem is a software issue and can be remedied with a service — no parts need to be replaced — at the dealer at no cost to owners. The company discovered the problem during internal testing and no incidents have been reported. Letters went out Thursday to Outlook owners, and letters for Acadia owners will go out Feb. 28. Owne…

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/23/business...amp;oref=slogin Something feels a bit slanted about this article. NYT pronounces the Sky as a brand image success over the Solstice even though the Solstice sells better overall and the Sky is the "fresher" product. Will Sky sales hold up once the novelty has worn off a bit? I doubt it if the Solstice (and every other new "hot" car) is any indication. The stupid thing about this is, once again, GM could have put a shot-in-the-arm for Chevrolet's brand image if Chevy had gotten this car instead of the lame-duck brands. The Solstice has done almost nothing for Pontiac's brand image overall because there's a lot of bad Ponti…

crusing lots today I saw the new 06 Grand Vitara. VERY NICE. Nice interior. Exterior is a nice chiseled shape. Whole vehicle seems well made. Cabin seems spacious, very sporty looking. Yes, that's the new GM 3 spoke steering wheel. Seat cloth seems nice. In fact, its the nicest Suzuki interior I've seen and the whole Grand Vitara makes the Equinox and Vue seem like regurgitated puke in terms of looks and quality appearance. A lot sportier looking than an Escape. Engine is a 2.7l v6...not sure what that's from. Pricing was good and warranty is always good with Suzuki. I know this should go with worldwide marques boards, but i thought it would get mo…

I can only shake my head and sigh. First there was the Equinox Then there was the Torrent. Now the Grand Vitara. I am sure GM must have some logical reason that Suzuki should get a version of the hottest selling Chevy to have come out in years. Please tell me there is. Did Suzuki badger and cajole GM? Did they threaten? Is there some legal reason that GM has to hand the keys to the Equinox over to them? Isn't it bad enough that the Verona and Swift + are already cross-shopped? I can only weep for the future of this company. Clearly, nobody in Detroit gets it. Hyundai and Kia are no longer bit players, let alone Suzuki. This can only serv…

'07 looking up for GM Automaker will pump another $1B into products as cost cutting continues Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News Link to Original Article @ DetNews The upbeat picture General Motors Corp. executives painted for Wall Street on Thursday is a far cry from a year ago when company leaders were scrambling to explain a disastrous $10.6 billion loss. If predictions for 2007 prove true, the world's largest automaker will shave losses, bolster spending on new products and grab market share in competitive world markets. But the heat is far from off GM, which lost $91 million in the third quarter of 2006 and expects to lose money again in 2007. Toyota Motor Co. is…

First Drive: 2007 Suzuki SX4 Re-creating the small crossover BOB GRITZINGER Posted Date: 11/30/05 If you thought Suzuki offered one small crossover vehicle in its Aerio five-door hatch, think again. Next September the Japanese automaker will introduce the slightly larger 2007 SX4, which it will market as a small “sport crossover vehicle.” Premiering at the 2006 New York auto show in spring, SX4 will take on a wave of small-on-the-outside, big-and-practical-on-the-inside entries such as the Chevrolet Aveo, Nissan Verso and Toyota Yaris. In SX4, Suzuki aims to capitalize on its heritage and strength in four-wheel-drive sport/utility vehicles. It must also over…

A while back, I posted my article about the 2008 Chevelle. I posted it, but it didn't work. I'm posting this topic from a remote computer and next time I get on the internet, at my home, I'll post it. But it is just the way I described it. It's red with not dualm but triple exhaust, and only four copies exist. GM still hasn't let me know how they think about it, so I decided to post ot on the internet. If you so talk about it, call it D6 so GM will notice it.

Rule three of automotive journalism: When a domestic carmaker introduces a new midsize, midprice sedan, reviewers are to write, "They're now as good as Camry and Accord." So here goes. The 2008 Chevy Malibu, which Chevrolet will introduce at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, looks like it's now as good as the Camry and Accord. Our obligation to the profession complete, it's only fair that we ask you to check back a few months from now to see what we think of the new 'Bu after we actually drive the thing. But, we must say, the completely restyled, more powerful Malibu sedan really does look pretty good. Aura underneath On sale in the fall, the 2008 Malibu sedan still uses GM…

4 Bay Area BPG Dealers close 4 GMC Pontiac Buick dealerships close Four GMC Pontiac Buick dealerships — in San Jose, Dublin, Newark and Colma — have abruptly closed their doors, as a fresh wave of shutdowns and consolidations roils the ranks of Bay Area auto dealers in the new year. An unknown number of employees were affected by the shutdown of Colma Buick Pontiac GMC in Colma and the closing of Capital Buick Pontiac GMC in San Jose. All four dealerships were owned by the same…

Wow! 47,600 buyouts Deal speeds up GM turnaround by 2 years; Delphi exodus paves way for restructuring. Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- More than 47,000 union workers at General Motors Corp. and bankrupt Delphi Corp. have taken buyouts or early retirements in what amounts to the biggest corporate downsizing in U.S. automotive history. GM said Monday that 35,000 hourly employees have agreed to leave the struggling automaker for packages ranging from $35,000 to $140,000 -- which will allow the company to reach its target reduction of 30,000 hourly jobs by Jan. 1, two years early. The final tally of buyouts and early retirements far exceeds early estimates and…

US NEWS story A $25 Billion Lifeline for GM, Ford, and Chrysler September 24, 2008 05:45 PM ET | Rick Newman | Permanent Link In Washington these days, an 11-figure expenditure barely attracts notice. With Congress preoccupied with the massive, $700 billion bailout plan for the financial industry, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler have finally secured Part One of their own federal rescue plan. A bill set to be passed by Congress and signed by President Bush as early as this weekend—separate from the controversial Wall Street bailout plan—includes $25 billion in loans for the beleaguered Detroit automakers and several of their suppliers. "It seemed like a lot whe…

"GM, Ford and Chrysler should see combined market share surge in December compared to dismal performances in recent months, consumer research firm Edmunds.com predicts. Collectively, the trio is expected to win nearly 58% of the market, compared to 53% in November and an all-time low 52% in October. " "Edmunds.com auto analyst Jesse Toprak said renewed demand for SUVs came from falling gas prices and the kind of icy road conditions that inspire a demand for four-wheel-drive vehicles. SUV sales and nationally advertised incentives as large as $4,500 could help GM." Lowered gas prices, consumers' demand for 4X4 to combat winter weather, …

perhaps this isnt good news, but its news that is better for GM then most the competition... i'll be seriously supprised if toyota loses their consecutive month after moneth improvements... the stock price also might have a shock if this is the truth... link to article DETROIT (AP) - Sales of new vehicles fell 8 percent overall during the first two weeks in February, but there was some indication General Motors Corp.'s new vehicles and lower prices are attracting buyers, an automotive data firm reported Tuesday. Honda Motor Co. was the only manufacturer that saw its U.S. vehicle sales climb in the first 12 days of the month, up 4 percent from the same time a year ago, …

Today on FastLane, we kick off a series of videos entitled, “The Case for GM,” in which General Motors leaders discuss the challenges we’re facing, what we’re doing to address them — and also why we still feel good about our future. This series will work better as a dialogue, so we’d love to hear your responses — and we’ll respond to questions that are offered in the spirit of sincere dialogue. Some of the responses will come from our execs; many will come from GM team members (and yes, we do think of ourselves as a team.) Check back on Monday, when GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner weighs in with his thoughts and stay tuned for more commentary by other GM leaders in the w…

Since it looks like you guys are a little behind on some of the things going on I wanted to give you a gift that keeps giving the more you look at it. This is part of a Holden ad declaring that they are here to stay. Well the deal is they are here to stay with other models shared with Chevy and possibly Buick/Opel. Take a gander at this photo and check out the Panamera like car at the top, Could this be the Buick Alpha Mark spoke of? The photo's posted on the side wall two with Code R like Grilles with the Holden bar. Also several on the desk. Note too the coupe. Could this be a Camaro/Monaro Alpha? Then look at the studio behind him and you will see a car we have not…

I have a few questions about the 2007 agreement. First, is GM getting rid of all HMO's or just select hmo's?? And second, people that are on non core jobs will have to make a desicion. One, retire if elegible. Two, quit. Three, stay on their non-core job and work for less money. Or four, flow back to the line. Now if he or she decides to flow back to the line they will bump somebody with a lesser seniority date. Now when all the bumping is said and done where do the people that got bumped go. And are only new hires going to be the ones filling the non-core jobs?? And last but not least who is elegible for the attrition program?

The bankruptcy of General Motors A giant falls Jun 4th 2009 From The Economist print edition The collapse of General Motors into bankruptcy is only the latest chapter in a long story of mismanagement and decline SINCE the start of the year it had seemed probable, and for several weeks inevitable. General Motors’ application on June 1st for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, triggering the biggest industrial bankruptcy in history, was nonetheless a momentous event. The filings lodged at 8am with a court in Manhattan were testimony to the size and complexity of the 101-year-old company and to the scale of the problems that had finally overwhelmed it. Until 2008,…

John Cortez Automotive News November 24, 2008 - 3:34 pm ET Dear Mr. Moore: Let me start by stating upfront that I'm a lifelong Michigander and a contract employee of General Motors. I should also add that, unlike many at GM, I have long been a fan of your work, the work of a man I had considered to be about truth, and truth-telling, even when it hurts, and hurts so bad it's funny in a pathetic sort of way. On "Larry King Live" last week, you didn't tell the truth, and it left me flabbergasted. In your defense, I think you did it out of ignorance, not malice. But it was an untruth nonetheless, and one that will have very damaging ramifications for Detroit and …

I just received an e-mail from Bausch and Lomb. If you've been following the news, you'll probably know that Bausch and Lomb sells a contact-lens solution called "Renu MoistureLoc". This product has been possibly linked to a rare eye infection (Fusarium keratitis) - which has caused them to recall (and stop producing) the product. Why is this interesting on a car forum? Their CEO is Ronald L. Zarrella. Here's his message in case you are interested: http://www.bausch.com/us/vision/about/news..._15_recall.html
