http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0.../A01-356532.htm Granted, this is good news but GM should have further negotiated with the UAW to put current workers on the same health care program as their white collar staff. Yes this deal is historic and probably very tough though not far enough. But that might have been out of scope of the negotiations. They did not go far enough.

WARREN, MICHIGAN - Like everybody else working for General Motors, Mark Reuss, the vice president for global vehicle engineering is happy Opel is not going to be sold. Meanwhile, he's changing the GM plan from his predecessor, Jim Queen's, global product development strategy. Under Queen, each region, or "global engineering center," had permanent responsibility for a specific set of products. Russelsheim, Germany, Opel's headquarters, pretty much owned the Epsilon/Epsilon II front-drive midsize platform, for example, while small cars were done at GM-Daewoo in South Korea and large trucks, SUVs and the Corvette were developed in Michigan. "I'll never do that because each …

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co. will mark its first serious foray into the U.S. premium compact-car segment early next decade when it launches a compact Buick, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Friday. The move will be a virtually untested venture for Detroit, where small cars have long been synonymous with entry-level, lower-budget offerings. It is a sign of things to come for the U.S. auto industry as stricter fuel-economy regulations take hold and force car makers to turn out smaller, more fuel- efficient cars. GM has sold compact Buicks in the past, but not with the features, upscale design and higher price point planned for Buick, Lutz said. He said GM aims…

Forster said the efficient management of individual brands within one parent company is crucial and described demand for mid-size cars as lackluster, whereas demand for vans, …

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- General Motors Europe's workers plan warning strikes on May 3 to press for a deal that would secure enough production volume at GM's plant in Antwerp, the carmaker's European labor leader said today. "Moreover we demand a contract guaranteeing the future of all GM Europe plants including Powertrain until the end of 2016," Klaus Franz told Reuters. He would not rule out further industrial action in order to persuade GM to build more than just 80,000 units of what will likely be a small Chevrolet planned to plug in a yawning production gap left after management decided not to build the next-generation Astra compact in Antwerp beyond 2010. Jamie LaReau Automotive News July 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — General Motors is allowing U.S. employees the opportunity, through July, to offer an employee discount to any one person they choose. The program is not as broad as GM's 2005 Employee Discount for Everyone event. It's an effort to boost sales, talk up GM products and clear inventory, a company spokesman said Friday. An employee discount provides substantial savings. For example, a Buick Lucerne with a sticker price of $34,200 would have an employee price of $29,758.03 after cash incentives, said a GM spokesman. http://www.yahoo.com/s/268025 DETROIT - General Motors Corp. expects to save about $4 billion this year as it implements its North American turnaround plan, Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said Friday. But he declined to give earnings guidance, saying there are too many outstanding issues facing the struggling automaker. Wagoner also refused to speculate on whether the board of the world's biggest automaker will consider cutting dividends to shareholders. Earlier this week, Jerome York, an aide to billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, said GM should consider halving its annual $2 per share dividend, which he estimated would save $566 million a year. By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 20, 2005 DETROIT -- General Motors' next generation of SUVs will debut with significant gains in fuel efficiency, safety, sophistication and design, the automaker promises. But GM doesn't think that will mean a huge spike in sales. GM, which unveiled its 2007 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe as well as the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade to journalists on Tuesday, is projecting sales to maintain current levels. "It is realistic to assume the segment won't grow," said Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global development. GM says it owns 60 to 62 percent of a 750,000-unit segment and leads…

"There are some obvious reasons for concern, but on balance I suspect '08 will be similar to '07 in total, although likely weaker in the first half and stronger in the second," Wagoner wrote in response to a question on his outlook for U.S. vehicle sales. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com GM was in the press earlier this year when it offered to help recover and restore the corvettes from the corvette museum that got damaged in the sinkhole. GM stepped up again when VP Mark Ruess happened to be listening to a radio show on WJR on Wednesday. The show talked about how police researching a phoney VIN led authorities back to the original owner. 71 year-old owner, George Talley got a call telling him his vette was in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Odometer showed 47,000 miles and was in good condition. The retiree who had worked at GM's Milford Proving Grounds had no idea of ho…

Link to Article GM Hits Million-Sales Mark in China Date posted: 12-21-2007 SHANGHAI, China — When General Motors edged Ford Motor more than 10 years ago to become the preferred partner of Shanghai Automotive, critics maintained that it would take decades for GM to recoup its initial $3 billion investment in the Shanghai GM venture and the jointly operated Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC). Turns out it only took a single decade. In fact, GM's China operations have been profitable since the early years. And now, with SGM and PATAC marking their 10th anniversaries in 2007, GM has achieved an even more remarkable milestone: It has become the first glob…

GM HOLDEN may have to increase and extend dramatically its US export program after parent company General Motors put all its US rear-wheel drive programs on hold in the face of proposed stiffer fuel economy standards. At first glance, the new standards will make it harder for GM to produce rear-wheel drive cars in the US, especially the high-performance V8 models. But GM will have the option of building the cars outside the US because the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards apply to imported cars and domestically built cars separately. GM imports most of its small cars and makes the majority of its larger cars in the US and Canada. Should GM decide not to m…

GM Hybrid to Undercut Prius Struggling U.S. automaker targets Toyota with plans for a cheaper hybrid SUV. November 16, 2005 As General Motors’ stock sank to its lowest level in 18 years on Wednesday, the troubled automaker turned to green technology for hope, pledging to undercut the competition when it introduces a hybrid version of the Saturn VUE next summer. “We think it will be the most affordable hybrid on the market,” Susan Garavaglia, manager of communications for GM’s powertrain division, said at a meeting in San Francisco. “Hopefully, we’re going to be opening up the hybrid market to more consumers.” GM was late to the hybrid game, making its first passenger …

GM image upgrade a ray of hope March 11, 2007 Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press | BY TOM WALSH | FREE PRESS COLUMNIST When you're on an economic losing streak as ugly as metro Detroit's -- Pfizer closing its Ann Arbor research complex, Chrysler on the auction block, Comerica headquarters moving to Dallas -- you look for an encouraging sign wherever you can. So it is with a flutter of hope that I bring two seeds of promise regarding the region's biggest corporate citizen, General Motors Corp.: A new national poll of 1,000 Americans by Rasmussen Reports shows that 69% think "favorably" of GM, a big jump from only 48% last year. And in Fortune magazine's 2007…

A dealer here is advertising buy a new chevy truck/suv and make no payments til 2007. First off, I'm laughing because 'another manufacturer' did this before and it still receives criticism around here, LOL...but I'm wondering if this is just one dealer that dreamt this up here local, or is this a new GM sanctioned sales tactic/gimmick. Is a GM deal or just a local thing? If it is a GM deal, this hits a new low in incentive tactics! If not, the dealer is darn desperate to move all those gas sucking trucks and SUV's!

Well it seems since C&G went down, so did my old username, metal928. Well we are back again. Gave one presentation and it went over great, we used quite a few of C&G comments. I would like to thank you all for helping us out. It is currently in the works for us two to present this to even higher people, which should take place sometimes next week. I have a question, What is the benefits of RWD over FWD? We went to FWD because of better traction and control, so why go back to RWD? Also, any other ideas would be great to hear. Our presentation has to be lenghted about 3 minutes. So we take all ideas into consideration. If you want to know what ideas we u…

Daily Tech Story Not be outdone by DaimlerChrysler, GM shows off its own communications system It looks as though DaimlerChrysler isn't the only automotive company looking at car-to-car communications systems. General Motors has announced its new vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) system which is currently being tested on Cadillac, Chevrolet, Opel and Saab models in Germany. Like DaimlerChrysler's system, V2V uses Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology, GPS and a vehicle’s numerous computer controlled active safety systems to relay data back and forth between vehicles. The system is capable of relaying such data as Emergency Brake Warning, Blind Spot/Lane Change notification (with acc…

Industry: The world changed. The world's largest (for now) automaker didn't. The good news is that most U.S. businesses haven't made the same mistake. Barring some miracle — such as a car that really clicks with consumers — General Motors Corp. is facing a future with no pleasant options. The least painful would be drastic downsizing, which means axing whole divisions like Pontiac and Buick, not just closing a few plants as it announced this week. It also might go into Chapter 11 or sell itself off in pieces, if anyone will buy. This is a woeful tale indeed, but it also comes with a sense of inevitability. No one has any reason to be surprised. GM&#…

By: Jamie LaReau Automotive News DETROIT -- General Motors is starting a national incentive program to run through Jan. 3 despite claims that it would hold to its value pricing strategy. The program, called GM Red Tag Event, starts Monday, Nov. 14, auto dealers say. A GM spokeswoman declined to comment on Friday, Nov. 11. Under the program customers can get any 2005 or 2006 Buick, Pontiac, GMC or Chevrolet car or light truck at the supplier price plus $100, several dealers say. The exceptions to the sale are the Pontiac Solstice, Chevrolet Corvette and new Buick Lucerne, they say. The supplier price is the price offered to employees of GM suppliers. For example…

You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs. Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid. The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of the worst economic down…

Not sure if this is the proper forum for this question, but where are the various GM locations in the US? More specifically do they have an office or something in Traverse City, MI? On the recently added Camaro production announcement topic from the homepage, there was a GM newsletter with information on it's release and I noticed that it said Traverse City, MI near the beginning of the main article. My wife's family, and her and I, have all considered moving out near that area, but were concerned over what work would be available. Of all the years we've traveled to Traverse(from Chicago), none of us knew there was anything GM related in the area. Can anyone confirm?…

If everyone else is going to build cars like Tata's headline-grabbing Nano, GM's going to pile on, too. The Lutz cites GM's part-ownership stake in Wuling Motors, a Chinese manufacturer of sub-$3,000 utility vehicles as a possible source of a GM Nano competitor. Lutz went on to say that one way to make an inexpensive car for the developing world is to repurpose a legacy platform that has become obsolete. The tooling and design will have long been paid off, and there'll be plenty of experience from the manufacturing side, too. Read the whole article here.

DETROIT - The financial safety net that cushions General Motors Corp. union workers during downturns, a program called the jobs bank, could be targeted for elimination just as the company seeks to cut 30,000 jobs. GM's plans outlined Monday to stop production at 10 U.S. facilities will increase only the number of autoworkers in the jobs bank, experts who follow the industry said. Under the program, initially agreed to with the UAW in contract negotiations in 1984, the three Detroit automakers pay hourly workers full wages and benefits even when a plant has closed or production stops. The companies agreed to the program so the UAW wouldn't fight new measures …
