New Yorkers outraged as bureaucrats order city to change lettering on every single street sign NY Daily News The city will change the lettering on every single street sign - at an estimated cost of about $27.5 million - because the feds don't like the font. Street names will change from all capital letters to a combination of upper and lower case on roads across the country thanks to the pricey federal regulation, officials said Wednesday. By 2018, MADISON AVE. will become Madison Ave. and will be printed in a font called Clearview, the city Department of Transportation says. The Federal Highway Administration says the switch will improve safety because drivers ident…

I know that LSx engines get stronger as they get less "green," but I've never heard of them getting better gas mileage as well. When I got the GTO with about 6k miles on it, I got 13.3.-13.5MPG consistently on each tank. Then one tank I averaged 14.1MPG and was presently surprised. That went on for a couple tanks, and then the last tank I got 14.6MPG. I thought maybe I was just babying it more than I used to, but now more than 3/4 of the way through the current tank I'm getting 15.1MPG and am definetly not babying it all the time. Anyone ever heard of the LS1 increasing performance AND gas mileage over time? This is also interesting because the Alero which is 700lb…

While helping a friend look for a new car I made sure to hope over to Consumer Guide for their comments and ratings. I was surprised by the car not getting a "Best Buy" rating because the score was so high. Upon closer review I found: 1. The Chevrolet Cruze showed an average of 29.2 mpg during the test cycle which gave it a score of 6, whereas the honda civic, which got 26.1 to 28.5 mpg, got a 7-8, and the mazda mazda3 which averaged 19.6 to 30.7 mpg got a 5-8. 2. The Chevrolet Cruze got a higher or equal overall score of 67-68 as compared to the honda civic (61-65), toyota corolla (55), mazda mazda3 (62-69), and VW Jetta (64-73) yet was not named a Best Buy like th…

... For that white Honda Accord. The Astra has started randomly quitting on me. I have absolutely no clue as to why, nor do I know what spurred it on. It first happened four nights ago as I was rounding a turn at 20 mph. I actually didn't even realize the car had quit at first; I was hitting the throttle and realized the engine wasn't responding and the rev counter was at zero. I pulled off to the side of the road and it restarted as if nothing happened. It did pretty much the exact same thing heading home tonight. No warning, nothing. On another note, the gas guage and fuel range read outs no longer sync up. Again, no idea why. Considering there's so few of these …

My neighbor has a big ol' '66 (?) Chrysler in his driveway. Cool alright... but, it has an alarm. It's been going off... constantly, for the last like 3 days. The battery must be going dead, because the whole time it's been sounding like water dripping into a galvanized bucket, and it just won't stop, it goes on, and on... and on...

Insurance industry test points to weak side structures in some cars WASHINGTON - Some sport utility vehicles don’t provide the protection in a side crash that one might expect from such large vehicles, according to tests released Thursday by the insurance industry. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave marginal scores in side-impact tests of 2008 versions of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and two SUVs built by Nissan Motor Co. — the Pathfinder and Xterra without optional side air bags. In similar side testing, the Toyota 4Runner and Pathfinder and Xterra models equipped with side air bags received top marks of good in the side testing. The For…

curse got me again. about 6 months since the last time. was driving. sudden massive hailstorm. big effing hail chunks. golf ball size and greater. so dense you could not see. it was like driving into gunfire or hundreds of folks banging on your car with hammers. frightening actually. my wife was the one driving. she actually managed to get it parked under part of an overpass to avoid a lot of hits. still the front and roof were getting raped. we drove again for a bit and then had to park again. one lady parked next to us and got out of her Japanese $h!hbox (CRV). her windshield was toast and she was moaning about all her dents. my wind…

... has the company built since Day 1?? Googled the question, saw one estimate of 500 million. Don't know if that source was GM or if GM even has an accurate count. Overseas markets and the confusion of partial brand ownership, etc in the latter half of the Company's history may make a comprehensive tally a challenge. All the years from the Sloan book referenced below are CALENDAR year sales. These numbers are less common than model year, and it makes the transition to those more readily-obtainable numbers inaccurate for that switch-over. 1909 : 32,311 (fiscal year ending 09.30.09 plus 3 months ending 12.31.09) ~ My Years with General Motors, Alfred P Sloan…

A bit of a rant, but these things happened over the last few weeks and I can't get over how dumb all 5 are. #1. My Buddy Steve runs a body shop, did the body work on my 71 Chevelle and my 55 Chevy and also has fixed my other cars, including the Safari van when it got hit by a truck. Steve took a BMW Salvage title rebuild down to the Ohio State highway patrol to get it checked out so he could sell it. He noticed a very nice 65 Corvette Convertible (red, restored) being hauled away with the impounds to a company that crushes cars. He asked them what they were doing with the Vette...and was told that they were crushing it for reasons they couldn't discuss. Why in…

I'm thinking its because I've been listening to an insane amount of Bjork lately, but I'd like to visit Iceland. And would even consider moving there, if I felt the need to leave the country. I realize its pretty much the last place on earth anybody would ever go, but has anyone ever been? And on a completely different subject, why cant I find a cruise that boards in New York or Miami, then goes around the friggen world? Circumnavigating the globe on a cruise ship would be sweet. Time consuming, but sweet.

Hey all, My GF needs a car and can't afford one, so, since we are extremley serious with wedding bells in the future, I decided to be a good BF and get her one. Now I'm not going off half cocked and buying her a car that will be in her name in case things don't work out (It will be in my name and I'll add her to my insurance) but I'm find of excited by the prospect of getting an SUV to backup my Mustand for the winter time. So I laid down the law and told her we could have 20-25k budget for anything domestic. So this is what the options are Saturn Vue- 2010 Equinox Jeep Cheroke. I come to find out today that my mom plans on clearing out the driveway. So that means both van are being junked (a pity, the very first car I ever drove was the `86 Caravan), but she also seems to plan to junk the Grand Marquis. She pulled it off the road to save money a couple months ago. Has a flat, and although I (and only I) made the effort to start it up, battery probably is too weak to start it. Does still have power through. To get it back on the road it needs a battery if this one is no good, and a tire. Have a spare tire, no biggie. Waterpump is starting to go, but that should be an easy fix. Looks much easier to do than the Shadow was. Then there's the tra…

I often drive by a L-M dealership and am able to glance at their inventory that is on the lot or in the showroom. Sometimes I actually stop in. They are a low-key dealership. They have a beautiful pearl white Lincoln MKS. They also have a silver one. From the outside, the car has got quite a stance. Most of its angles are good. I am not so sure I like the austronaut effect once inside. It has the high console just like the new Taurus. Also, once inside, you know you are in one hefty car. I think it's a very attractive vehicle, but it's way above my price point and way above the "statement" I need to make with my car - that is, if I need to make one at all. I ca…

This struck me as random and funny. Today, a really old guy (80/90ish) in my neighborhood told me my car looked "smooth as a toilet seat." I had no response to that. Awhile ago, my girlfriend drove my car and said because the overhangs are pretty large compared to her car, that my car "is a big titty and big booty car." Yeah. Anything to add?

This past Wednesday I opened my mailbox to find a package from my best friend & fellow car enthusiast Jonathan Duffy. This made my day before I even opened the package because Duffy never dissapoints in the gifts department. Last time I got a package from Duffy it was a Haynes Repair Manual for my 1984 Datsun Maxima. He managed to track down a copy in some bookstore in the middle of Arizona. Just south of Cactusville and west of Sand Hill. :P Well this time for a Christmas present he managed to find me a near-mint copy of the classic magazine Motor Age from December 17th 1914. So that makes it exactly 91 years old as of today. The print quality & photos…

I came across a few old car commericals in the past few days, and thought I would share it. With the exception of 1 commerical, the rest represent everything that was bad about advertising in the 70's and 80's. Cheesyness to the utmost extreme...... bad music, lots and lots of it (with the exception of 1 song). http://www.ttzd.com/movies/archive/300_01l.mpg This first one is an ad for the Nissan (or as metioned in the ad, Datsun) 300ZX. I think it's 1984. Keep an eye out for a feature that's on a '06 Civic. http://www.ttzd.com/movies/archive/n_r_t.mpg This is also a 300ZX, but from 1995. GIJoe. Barbie. Van Halen. I'm working 2 jobs for the first time in my life. Today I left the house at 9AM, got back home about 5:30, left again at 8:30 and got home at 12:30 (including drive time). That's 11.5 hrs. Did nearly the same yesterday and have nearly the same penciled in for tomorrow. Off-limit weekends are now fair game for work. I seem to have some sort of inhuman energy recently in this department.... yet my '59 sits gathering dust out in the shop- a 1000 hours left in the restification. I want to look 5 years into the future and see what treasures are sitting inside GM's walls right now. With all this speculation on engines, upcoming models, and now transmissions.. one's got to wonder. Chevy's getting a whole new face within the next year or two, Zeta will be debuting full-force, an 8-speed-automatic is in the rumor mill, Cadillac will be twice the company it is now, and GM's really cracking the whip on quality all across the board. Damn, I keep hearing new rumors and things "within the walls" and it just gets me antsy.. like that speculated 3V V8 and the "experimental 470 HP engine" found inside a CTS-V. And then with DI coming about and us hearing abou…

Extended warranties - are they a good idea? I bought the GMPP for my 1992 Regal. The car had 3/36 but I got coverage up to 6 yrs and 72,000 miles. I NEVER had to use it once! I guess I should have been mad, but I would have had to pay beaucoup bucks for an air conditioning compressor and such had they gone out. OK, now I'm on the cusp of the new car purchase (in the fall, when I get back from Europe). If I snag a 2006 (some are still around), powertrain is 3/36 so I'd go 72 months again. If I snag a 2007 or 2008, powertrain is 5/100, so the extra year is more for the other accessories...which can be expensive...but I'd still go 72 months. Questions: Have you bo…

Last night I went to the Kernels ball game in Cedar Rapids that was sponsored by my company (plus all the free food and beer you can consume). Well, I ended up locking my keys in the car and didn't realize it until the game was over at 10:30 at night. I went to customer services and they gave me the number of a locksmith and also a number for the Cedar Rapids Police. I tried the police first because one of the guys said they have tools on hand to unlock cars, but the dispatcher said they had nothing like that (flat out lie....probably were too lazy to come out there). So I gave in and called the locksmith since I had no other choice. The guy and his wife were both e…

If there's anything that really makes me mad, it's when some degenerate goes and kills a cop... Especially when the officer is RCMP. It's kinda sad that all of the ones that have been gunned down in recent years have been green, in their 30s, with wives and families. That is until some f-ed up degenerate takes him away from them. Just one such thing happened in Hay River, Northwest Territories the other day. Now a Canada wide search is getting started and the FBI and INTERPOL are getting involved. They'll get him. Today an Edmonton, AB neighbourhood was basically shut down trying to find this guy- another dead end. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...1011?hub=Ca…

The three-week trial was heard in Arizona State Court. The verdict was handed down on Nov. 19. In the lawsuit, Allen and her attorneys alleged that a defective Uniroyal tire -- manufactured by Michelin at its plant in Ardmore, Okla. -- was the reason for a single-vehicle rollover accident on Oct. 8, 2011, i…

A sweet little old lady came in today for an estimate on her Glacier Blue Buick Century (amazingly, with chrome, late-model Intrigue wheels on it with Buick center caps, hmmm... was that an obscure Century special edition built after Intrigue production ended?) Anyway, she was sitting in the office, shooting the breeze with my manager, telling him the story of how her right front corner got banged up. She was in a local mall parking lot, "when a lady driving a Lincoln Town House hit me!" We all managed to keep it together while she was with us, but when she left, we were rolling. All I could think of was asking her "3 bedroom, 2 and a half baths?" But I held my tongu…

Article My favorite quote: BOB LUTZ, GM's vice chairman of global product development: "Now that we have the 35 miles-per-gallon fuel economy mandate by 2020, I am hoping that in 2008 'Professor Doktor' David Friedman (research director, clean vehicles program, Union of Concerned Scientists) and his 'highly-qualified' band of allegedly concerned, self-proclaimed scientists will turn their energy toward showing the world's automotive industry exactly how those numbers, using existing technology and 'costs of a few hundred dollars at the most' can be attained with a vehicle selection that even remotely resembles the cars and trucks Americans want to buy today."

Wednesday I was involved in a pretty serious MVA. I won't go into details but the Av is probably totalled judging by what my son says it looks like. I have not seen the damage because I was unconscious when the paramedics pulled me out of the truck. I just got out of the hospital today with cuts to my face, head, arm, and left leg, bruises, abrasions from the air bags, and broken ribs. My son is here taking care of me while I am recovering. I just figured I would let everyone know since that seems to be part of the culture around here.

G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com C&G Hottest Rides List! The goal here is to have members post what they would have on a list of hottest rides. Anything is a go, yet with that said I would like you to look into your own history of auto's and what you feel would be respectable rides. We can always do a list of ubber luxury hot rod rides, I would like this to be more of a common persons ride list. With that I will start it off with what I would have on this list: 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe 1987 Buick Regal GNX Grand National 1991 GMC Syclone 1992 GMC Typhoon 20…

Friday evening, I went to the show to check out some new metal and see people's impressions. Unfortunately, I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked- only about 1.5 hours. Here are some of my takes from it- Starting with my own brand, VW's display was a joke. The cars looked great, and they had good variety of trims, but there were some glaring omissions. There was no Golf R on display. No Atlas or Tiguan. I obviously didn't expect to see any concepts like the I.D.s or anything, but the Tiguan and Atlas have already been revealed in their production guise. Not displaying your two newest offerings in the hottest market segment, at a show that is taking…

OK, so the choices have been narrowed based on her requirements, and the cars that fit them that she likes have been selected. So here is the final list of all the ones she is considering... 1. Eclipse (Spyder or coupe) 2. Mustang (Convertible or coupe) 3. G6 (Hardtop convertible only, doesn't like the coupe) 4. Altima coupe 5. Accord coupe 6. BMW 128 coupe / cabrio 7. Mazda RX-8 Eos, MINI, and C30 were all considered and dropped from the list. So, of those seven, what would you choose and why?

Moving on, we have arrived at the one I suspect most people will enjoy the most. That's right, ocho cilindros. Rules- 1) Production cars only. 2) Any era and market is allowed. 3) These are your only cars. 4) Must be 8 cylinders. NO HYBRIDS!! 5) As before, after you do a Top 5 List, if you want to do a follow-on, that would be great.

If you go to Wikipedia and search on "Star Trek (movie)" and scroll down, you'll see a picture of the new Enterprise bridge with Kirk (Chris Pine.....oooooo so f@#king hot) and McCoy...... I have to say.....the new bridge is SO cool, it's incredible....! Somehow, they were able to design a bridge that looks futuristic compared to today's times.....yet captures the "cheesy" spirit of the original (and I say "cheesy" in a good way.) Think "Enterprise" meets "Apple's IPod" and you'll get an idea of what it looks like. AND, Pine's "slouch" in the captain's chair seems PURE William Shatner..... You straight boys can let us all know what you think of the Yeoman's skirt…

I've mentioned this before, but I recently moved to Washington DC to start work. Today I decided to go to the Pentagon City Fashion Centre, which is a gigantic mall next to the Pentagon (duh). As I was about to turn into the parking garage, I noticed a black sign propped up in the median saying "Cadillac Event" with an arrow pointing straight. Obviously, I had to check out what it was. I drove to the other side of the block to discover 3 big Cadillac tents and a bunch of SRXs and competing cars parked on the side of the road. I discover that GM is hosting a "drive the SRX against the X5, RX, and GLK" day, and as long as you have a license you're free to drive each one …

Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee. The first Catholic man tells his friends, "My son is a priest, when he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'." The second Catholic man chirps, "My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Grace'." The third Catholic gent says, "My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone says 'Your Eminence'." The fourth Catholic man then says, "My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Holiness'." Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, the four men give her a subtle, "Well....?" She proudly replies, "I have a daughter, slim, …

I'll never forget the reaction my mom had when I showed her all of these... What's interesting is that my Grand Am got a 5 star rating for driver frontal. Never knew that. The newer GA only got 4. Ironic. I don't know what the Blazer got... but from the looks of it... I'd guess 2 stars. Jeeesh... I can't believe they even let Chevy sell those death traps. :D

Does anyone know why the website "GMIsidenews" behaves this way when info is linked from this site? Immediately they remove all threads that have linked info from Cheers&Gears. Not trying to pry, but, what gives? If I'm out of line asking this question just delete this thread and I apologize... But I'm very curious? <_<

On Thursday night coming home from mom's a new Honda Odyssey pulled out in front of me and almost got blasted in the ass. I had to slam on my brakes. It was full of people too. What did they do? They waved at me. I saw like four arms upraised, waving happily. Don'tcha hate it when someone who's in the wrong just laughs at you, or worse... gives YOU the finger? Do tell.

Well, the thread title pretty much sums up the problem. The roof wants to vent, but the right side doesn't want to slide back, when the left slide does. The Chrysler/Dodge dealer sais it would cost $670 for a new assembly + labor! Thats outrageous, I'd rather just get another car. Any ideas or know where I can get used parts cheap cheap cheap? Oh, and the vehicle in question is a 2001 Plymouth Neon.

No commentary... Cost? $1640 total. Car? 1995 Mazda Millenia. Miles? 160k. Anything wrong with it? Nope. How does it run? Perfectly. Was it a good idea? Well... Was it a good deal? Absolutely... and that's what's matter in the end. Is it what I expected to get? No... but always expect the unexpected.
