So this happened yesterday: Now, I fully plan on keeping my car until it dies. That said, I've been considering whether to buy a cheap older car with good gas mileage to keep from piling up more miles than necessary on my primary car. Would it be economically responsible to find a ~$2K beater that gets about 30-35 mpg to trek the 30 miles each way to work? Or would initial cost, insurance and probability of repair make it not worth it? -RBB

  2. Dave87rs suggested a sex thread to displace the politics thread...so here is the question. You are making a movie and you can have any hollywood star do a nude scene...who would you pic? Me-Amber Tamblyn, I think she is so sexy and brainy. Not really an actress but I'd like to see Danica Patrick get buck naked. Your thoughts? And to the mods, sorry if this is "not fit for cheers and gears" but Dave did have a good idea in terms of another thread to take everyones mind off of the election. Chris

The Lumina was broken into today while parked in the parking garage near where I work. It happened sometime between 7:30 AM and noon. The asshole punched the driver's side lock in with a tool, unlocked the car, and then ripped my stereo out and left. The dash was damaged slightly and I'm not sure if they will be able to repair the lock on the door since the sheet metal was punched in pretty deep. Luckily nothing else was taken...I had a fold-out chair in the backseat, some CD's under my seat, and a set of golf clubs and a $40 battery charger in my trunk. The stereo was a $300 Alpine and has almost as much value as my car. I'm pretty bummed right now...luckily my in…

I got my second shot on Feb 11th at 6pm. The next morning I woke up feeling feverish with body aches and chills. I took Advil and drank Gatorade and felt blah all day. In the evening I had to pick up a curbside grocery order, I didn’t feel well but I went anyway. On the way back I really felt awful and almost pulled over to make Albert drive back. I made it home and went right back to bed. I had fevers during the night for the next few nights. I didn’t start feeling no…

Arkus met me at the door again this evening when I returned home from work. This time, he not only escaped his crate, he dismembered it. I have no idea how to contain him now. Clearly, no crate can hold him. Fortunately, Zora was safely locked in my bedroom so no violence this time. Unless you count the crate. Arkus broke half a dozen welds and twisted the reinforcement rods like pretzels. After making a hole big enough, he pushed the heavy pressboard "floor" I just installed out of the crate far enough to again escape through the small openings in the bottom. All of the chains and huge C-clamps are still in place, and the crate is still chained to the cast-iron…

The thing is, when installing a rebuilt unit, Honda suggests replacing the transmission PCM (power control module), at a cost of almost 1k. GE picked up the cost of the transmission, but not the computer. But since my friend is required to use a new PCM, shouldn't the warrentee cover its' replacement? Anyone have any suggestions? Also, does anyone know of any popular Honda forums, where I might also pose this question? Thanks in advance!

This spring, America hit a historic point. With average gas prices per gallon edging toward $4, America's notoriously profligate ways started to change fast. Americans are driving less, using mass transit more, buying fewer gas guzzlers, indeed shopping less wantonly in general, and lowering their previously unshakable confidence as consumers. Suddenly, Americans are acting differently; if not exactly like Swedes, then not quite like themselves, either. It's a shift that could change the world. And there are more changes to come. So far the price shock has triggered the most obvious consumer shifts in the United States. Europeans, already greener, are also are buffered …

I am going to be starting a job soon and I have some money saved up so I may try to find a good Grand Am coupe for sale. I absolutely have loved Grand Ams, any generation and I have always wanted one as a first car. Pontiacs are great and I think I may rather get a Grand Am. Sporty looks, fair amount of power. I think I might try to find a 90s Grand Am coupe. I see plenty around but no body seems to be getting rid of any. They are beautiful cars nonetheless. I am scrapping all ideas except for a Grand Am, possibly a Sunfire, and some 3800 V6 vehicles. My dad has the idea of me getting a car with absolutely no rust. Up here with all the salty roads, there is no such thing…

As it was, I took a few seconds to stare into her mirror and use every expletive I could think of, remembering to mouth each one carefully in case she could read lips. What the hell is wrong with people that the simple concept of looking where you intend to back-up before doing so escapes them?

I have a Dodge Caliber as my rental for a few days with 40k miles on it. It is an absolute pile... the best thing Dodge could have done is take it out back and shoot it. But that got me thinking, even just since the Caliber, the quality of vehicles has improved dramatically. So sound off, what are the worst new cars in production and on sale today?

I don't like: That dead fluffy animal carcass on his head that he tries to pass for hair. The way he thinks he can act on television, but its very obvious that he can't. The way his mouth moves when he speaks (See above) makes me wanna deck him right in the mouth. His grating, wheezy, irritating voice. The poster boy for everything wrong with corporate America How many times has he been married again? He's a phucking philanderer (see above. his new wife better keep some serious tabs on him) Did I mention that annoying way his mouth moves when he tries to act and speak at he same time? GAWD I wanna deck that bastard.

I just found a 1980-84 Oldsmobile Omega Brougham Coupe at the wrecking yard. The car is beautiful with its tan paint that is only chipped. There is absolutely no rust on the body. Every single piece of chrome trim that should be there is there. It is clean and has all original wheel cover all matching. The best part is, the interior. It is a darker brown. The cloth seats are mint with no rips and the dash is the same. No paint faded and every chrome piece is in the interior. The wood trim is all there and not scratched nor pieces missing. It also has the bucket seats and it may have the V6. The interior was vacuumed and cleaned before it was brought to the junkyard as was…

Well boys and girls, I haven't had my truck running very well for quite some time. I tore the carburetor off, tore it apart, and well, the power valve was blown out. So I replaced it, put the carb back together, snotted it back onto the truck, got the adjustments back together, and cranked it up. It ran like a bloody top! It feels so wonderful to have my truck back in proper working order. It runs, purrs, roars, snorts, and well, I have to curse it every now and again, but it works GREAT! I'm going to be driving it to the local cruise in this Saturday night (by the way, also my birthday), so y'all wish me luck, I should have lots of pictures of the event, and of cou…

Contrary to the firm-held belief from the New=powned! Club that 'everything is getting better because we've been told so'.... the National Association of Home Builders has released another survey showing the life expectancy of major home appliances. The last time this survey was compiled was 1993. As competition and the cost of doing business continually creeps upwards with no end in sight, undoubtedly all avenues of 'bringing home the bacon' are being discussed, including that old bugaboo; planned obsolescence. Whether that alone, or some combination of that, corner-cutting and substandard quality control from 3rd world assemblers is involved (and I supposed increased c…

  87. Guys, Although I love Civil Engineering, I cannot see myself doing it for the rest of my life. Not that I do not like it, it just makes me feel I am being too specific. I am planning to move into Management Consulting. My current firm is a Civil Consulting firm, so the rigors of Consulting are not unfamiliar to me. The reasons for going into Management Consulting are: 1. I want to get experience in a variety of fields and management consultants "advice" people in different industries. 2. I love to travel and do not mind the hectic life of moving from one tent to another while working in the process. 3. One thing that really drove me to it was McKinsey's foray in…

Well boys and girls, I always hoped and prayed it wouldn't get me, but dammit, it got me. Two nights ago I was coming home from getting gas. I had the green light at an intersection and out of nowhere comes a 2000 or newer Chevy, or possibly GMC Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe (couldn't really tell, I was too busy trying to avoid playing bumper cars) across my front end, well I slam on the binders and start aiming for the rear of the truck hoping that I would be able to clear it and just swerve. No such luck, crunch, crash, sounds of collision ensue. Anyway to make the story even worse, after we hit, the other person just slows down for a second, then continues to drive on. Po…

I love how parents pick hondas because they think they are so reliable and safe. Last night a young girl couldn't stop in time on wet pavement due to not having ABS. Her brakes locked up and she ended up rear ending the HHR. Had she had the same year Cavalier she would have avoided hitting me because of having ABS. At any rate, she was going about 20 mph and did some decent damage to the honda but very little to the HHR. One of her friends pulled over to see if she was ok and upon inspecting the cars told her that if she had bought a Chevy the damage would not be so bad and with the ABS she would have stopped in time. Funny, I didn't even need to say anything. …

  93. What is the coolest GM car that you ahve seen this week? For me it is a silver 66 Chevelle S396 hardtop that had to be one of the nicest restorations I've ever seen. I've seen lots of Super Chevy show winners, I've seen AACA winners, I've seen pritine Mustang Club of America winners... And this thing was nicer, cleaner, and more seemingly original than anything else I swear that I've seen in a long time. Ok, now after the idiot moved out, I moved kiddos computer into the living room so we could be together more, but didn't hook up the surge strip, stupid I know. Well, it blew up. I thought the the monitor was good cause it powered up and the bulb was good and the 7.1 speakers made noise when I was unhooking them so I assumed they survived. I had no way to test the speakers because of the 7.1, they have 4 cables to plug into the sound card and the monitor is DVI, and my lappy doesn't have DVI. So anyway, I made a insurance claim for the stuff that was toast. Got the check and ordered him a Dell …

THE SEXES Paid To Do It, But Fails To Make His Friend's wife Pregnant After 72 Attempts In Stuttgart, Germany, a court judge must decide on a case of honorable intentions in a situation where a man hired his neighbor to get his wife pregnant. It seems that Demetrius Soupolos, 29, and his former beauty queen wife, Traute, wanted a child badly, but Demetrius was told by a doctor that he was sterile. So Soupolos, after calming his wife's protests, hired his neighbor, Frank Maus, 34, to impregnate her. Since Maus was already marrried and the father of two children, plus looked very much like Soupolos to boot, the plan seemed good. Soupolos paid Maus $2,500 f…

Guy out driving his 20 hour old Camaro SS gets rear ended by a punk teenager with no insurance or driver's license. http://jalopnik.com/5247902/this-is-what-a...o-ss-looks-like After learning what a totaled Dodge Challenger looks like, we've now seen what a totaled Camaro SS looks like. Better still, it was only 20 hours old! Ouchgasmic gallery below. Bye, Bye Mr. Camaro According to Camaro5, this brand spankin' new Camaro SS was reduced to a pile of scrap by an uninsured and unlicensed teenager ridin' dirty in a Ford Escape.
