What do you guys do if you can't sleep? Bleh, I am feeling a bit stressed out. Work was insane yesterday, busy. My least favourite insurance reinspector showed up at 12:50 (I leave for lunch at 1). My new truck awaits, and all that jazz surrounding that project, now with a buyer thrown in the mix. My friend Ryan (yes, I've told you about him) called me yesterday to let me know the crew was going to Chili's (!) for lunch instead of our regular place and our receptionist didn't give me the message (luckily he called my extension directly just as I was about to leave) (I love him so much) (Lunch at Chili's sucked. I don't think any of us enjoyed it.) I have a headac…

Yeah, this week totally blows, and I don't give a rat's ass what side of the political or culinary fence you sit on. First, Ron Paul announces that he will retire from politics, another major war likely looms on the horizon, and now Hostess announces that it is going out of buisness. Yep. That's right. Our collective fat American asses will no longer be able to scarf down the golden sweet goodness of the processed junk food we know and love as the Twinkie. Or slap together a peanut butter sandwich using the whitest of white bread, Wonder Bread. No longer can we swing by a Circle K or 7-11 and grab a handful of Ho Hos or Hostess Cupcakes, nor can we hazily gorge ourselves…

Article appears here: http://www.slate.com/id/2161309/ As you've probably heard, there's been an explosion of inequality in the United States over the past four decades. The gap between high-skilled and low-skilled workers is bigger than ever before, and it continues to grow. How can we close the gap? Well, I suppose we could round up a bunch of assembly-line workers and force them to mow the lawns of corporate vice presidents. Because the gap I'm talking about is the gap in leisure time, and it's the least educated who are pulling ahead. In 1965, leisure was pretty much equally distributed across classes. People of the same age, sex, and family size tended to have abo…

Well, now that its all confirmed, allow me to share the great news. I have been invited to attend the Saturn Brand Advocate Board Meeting in Detroit as a representative of Cheers and Gears. This trip is all-expenses paid courtesy of Saturn and General Motors and includes tours of the GM Heritage Center, Milford Proving Grounds, and the Delta Township Assembly Plant (assly location of the Lambda crossovers) as well as a chance to meet and speak with Jill Lajdziak, Saturn Brand Manager. I will be away from April 18-20th. Needless to say, I am very, very honored and excited to have this opportunity and that pride carries over to the organization we have here. What this symb…

Perhaps the greatest (and most dangerous) street race I've ever watched....two British-sounding guys in an '06 Z06 take on a Ford GT on metro Detroit freeways during lunchtime traffic. Speeds up to 160 mph. There are so many times where it could have just ended for one of them....just one little lane change by a passing motorist and it's over. Does anyone from Detroit know if this race made the police scanner or the local news? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLw_Y-WuuI Here's another involving some Lamborghinis and the GT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGk1iFa_roU...ted&search=

As I was reading the 2007 JD Power Report for long term dependibility, it made me think. If consumer reports shows a low marking for toyota vehicles now (model specific) then JD Power will show a MUCH bigger issue later. As I see it, JD Power is closer to realistic reporting as they are not subscriber based, unlike cr which has a loyal toyota fan base. If that fan base is not used then the problems with the 3 vehicles will show 10 fold. This could easily knock lexus out of the top marking. Not only that; it could knock toyota as a whole out of the top. Hmm . . . Now add to the fact that in the past few years quality issues and recalls have been a trend at toyota t…

I got a DVD/VCR player combo a couple years ago for Christmas and went to use it today only to find out that the DVD eject motor doesn't work. I've probably only used it 15-20 times since I've owned it because I watch a lot of movies on my laptop. It was some no-name brand called "Go Video" and my sister got the same one and had the exact same thing happen about a year ago. Country of manufacture: South Korea. Meanwhile, our 1982 RCA VCR back home still works to this day.

What's your most feared driver stereotype? I don't mean just people who annoy you on the road, I mean people you avoid because you think they'll do damage to you or your vehicle. For me, it is women of a certain age in mini-vans. The typical subject is about 104 lbs, has the seat pushed as far forward as possible, wears giant Jackie O sunglasses, and is an assistant manager somewhere. She only has two modes of driving; slow and erratic in the left lane while arguing on the phone or Michael Schumacher with a bad case of diarrhea and searching an unfamiliar place for a toilet. So how about it? Who out there makes you fear driving?

Sooooooo had a root-canal at the dentist yesterday due to a cracked tooth. I hate the dentist. I'd rather get 500 tetanus shots & 500 MRIs than go in for ANYTHING at the dentist. My teeth are wicked sensitive and I have had some horror-movie experiences at the dentist. SERIOUSLY. Blood and all! So anyway I'm a little delusional, maybe that explains the following: I'm considering buying Julie a FWD car, on my own accord. Let me repeat myself: I'm considering buying a FWD car. Scary I know. It's a topsy-turvy world out there. Either way she's doing a lot of complainign a bout the the size of the RoadmOnster, esp. the width. B-bodys got some WIDE…

Did you know that originally rubber for tires was white? And that vulcanization of rubber (carbon added) created the black as we now know tires? They first used the new black rubber on the treads creating the whitewall. Here's a little history: http://carsatlarge.com/2007/01/tires-never...te-subject.html

Now Wall Street may shun $700bn bail-out Fears are mounting that many Wall Street banks and financial firms will refuse to participate in the US government's $700bn bail-out package, leaving global markets and world economies in a perilous state for months to come. 'There is a growing feeling that banks ... might instead decide to tough it out,' said Thomas Caldwell, chairman and CEO of Caldwell Financial, a $1bn-plus fund manager. For the past two weeks all eyes in the market have been focused on US Congress and its attempts to pass Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bail-out package - a bill to allow the US government to buy up to $700bn of toxic mortgage-related …

My retirement papers from GM have been signed and submitted, they take affect March 31st, 2009 at COB. I start officially with BMW on May 4th, 2009. With my sick and vacation time I have, I will be paid until June 15th, 2009 by GM. 20 years with GM, so many memories, so many thoughts, I struggled with this decision for many months, with long sleepless nights, it was not an easy one for me ... I will be 40 in June, here's to another happy 20 years at BMW ...

I couldn't take a photo. I could see its grille from my driver's side outside mirror and it was moving briskly forward in the fast lane on a rainy freeway. It was circa a 1987 Mercury Cougar. Those were weird looking cars. Ok, the front is fairly tame But, then, it all turns into a $h!tshow! Maybe some kudos are in order for the bold move. You could get a V8, but entry-level power came from FoMoCo's version of the 3.8 liter V6. (The corresponding Ford T-bird of those same years was even more dowdy.) The car I saw was in excellent condition.

2023 could not end soon enough. It seemed like people were freaking out about AI or trying to freak out others about AI. While the U.S. experienced low unemployment and falling inflation, American politics is almost beyond repair, with a dysfunctional do-nothing Congress and an ethically challenged Supreme Court. The previous occupant of the White House was charged with 91 felony counts. In the UK Charles III and Camilla were crowned king and queen. The submersible OceanGate Titan imploded in the sightseeing tour to the Titanic. The Ukraine war has no end in sight, with about a half million deaths so far, the majority being Russian troops. Hamas attacked Israel in…

Here is the question-you are producing a big bucks Hollywood movie with a script you've written. The villan/anti-hero dies at the end in a brutal car wreck that ends his (or her) life and the life of the car in a spectacular fashion. What would be a great, sinister car to blow up? Here are my thoughts- 1. Modern Porsche (cayman perhaps) painted black. 2. Suicide door moredoor lincoln from the 1960's, again, black. Would hate to destroy a vintage car, but we could use a Parts car as a stand in. Great anti hero car, suprised it hasen't been used more. 3. What else? 69 Charger R/T. Every other 69 Charger ever made has been destroyed in movies-TV, why not anoth…

So, I must rant. In the local trade book was a listing for a 1982 VW Rabbit for $600. I thought to myself "Hmm, intriguing." I decide to call the guy up for more information and set up a meet for tomorrow. A few hours later, he calls me back and asks if I'd like to look at it tonight. Sure, why not... I go on my merry little way over to check it out. It had 68k original miles, the interior was pretty much immaculate, and the exterior was fairly decent without any rust whatsoever. I'm thinking "What's the catch? It must not run very well." The guy starts up for me. Runs pretty damn good... its even inspected. Then, another guy shows up on a bike. They've either met prev…

Yes, I'm ALREADY looking to my 2011 road trip. While I know about 2 car shows the last weekend of June 2011 in PA (GM Nationals, Carlisle; MC Nationals, York)...and the irony of the 2 shows being so close together with many people I know attending at least 1 of the 2 shows, it does not appear (at this point) that I will be able to go, due to lack of vacation time. Instead, since I have yet to travel to the northwest section of the United States during any of my road trips, that is where I'm heading.... In early June 2011, I may have the opportunity to travel with a Route 66 friend of mine along part of US Route 66 from Chicagoland to Amarillo TX. If that works out, th…

Okay, first off: it's *not* an olds-person's disease. It's basically a hereditary condition where your body makes too much of something called Uric Acid. It crystalizes in a joint (most commonly your big toe) and causes you a intense pain. The first time I had it, I couldn't stand the weight of my bed-sheets touching my big toe -- yes, it hurts that flipping bad. Well, it appears that I've got it in my small-toe -- and it hurts like a mother. Just got out of the doctor (they also found a lump in my wallet, badump-bump) & picked up my prescription. It's soooo lame to be tied up by something so small! I once had it in my knee (and the doctor needed to take a flu…

..no, you pervert, my Porsche "virginity." About a month ago, I happened to be sitting in front of my computer when an email came in from the dealership I got my A5 from. They were having a "Day at the track" event for their customers and the first 75 people to reply would get a FREE track day and free instruction. Hmm…let me think…. Yes, I'll attend. As the day neared, I thought I was going to miss out. My A5 wasn't going to be available to drive that day. I emailed them back and said they should probably give my spot to someone else. The reply was something like "Oh, no, we'll have cars there for you to drive. You should definitely still come." Disaster averted. The…

This is kinda of a interesting idea. I usually frown on even the thought of doing it, but due to some of the major sucesses I've seen ( friend-05 Sunfire/ Co-worker 03 Cavalier), it has my considering the idea myself.. Keep in mind, this is going to be the beater, not the main car. I want a nice, new car that I can baby. The only requirements is that is has air, a Cd player, and decently low miles... More than my rusty beater has now... So far I've nosed though the world of 03-05 cavaliers, due to the low price, decent on gas, and pretty easy to fix. So far I found a 03 LS sport w/ 52k for 5 grand, and 04 base sedan with 49k for 4500...both with repaire…

So my aunt came over for Christmas as always, but she wasn't sure she was going to make it on Christmas Eve, as her Subaru Outback wouldn't start, but finally turned over after an hour's delay. She drove it here and it made it, and then it started fine on Christmas and the day after, when we took it to the dealer's service department. While it was in service being looked at, we went out looking. First up was the CR-V. For some reason she thinks their cute, and I guess we all have our own opinions. She thought it was what she really wanted, and had high hopes. She picked out one she liked (sticker was $28.5k) and we were on our way. We both thought it was terrible. Harsh…

Yesterday in Bracciano, we were at some guy's apartment who is also a well-known chef in the area and since he works part time for Iowa State, he cooked us a seven course meal. While we were there, his wife had on their collection of 80s music, and one song came on that I know I used to hear on the radio when I was a little kid and want to try to find it, but I have no idea who it's by or what any of the lyrics even are. So I figured I'd give it a shot and see if anyone here knows what song I'm talking about. The singer sounds a lot like the guy from Depeche Mode or the Cure, but the song isn't by either of those two as far as I know. It's sort of a slower tempo song…

Got your attention? Gather around the campfire kids I've got a tale for you. This is a perfect truth is stranger than fiction scenario. Unfortunately it has a very tragic & sad ending... First off some of you may remember "Mr.Death". About a year ago I owned, for a short time a rotted, tired & neglected 1970 Cadillac Coupe deVille seafoam green with a tan interior & black top. There's a long story about why that car was called "Mr.Death", but this is not the time or the place for that. <----- "Mr.Death" Well recently I've been talking quite a bit about another Cadillac beater... So I climbed the stairs of the CN Tower yesterday for a charity event. 1776 stairs (144 flights) Took me 15 minutes, 1 second. The records listed on the wall at the top were quite amusing... Fastest stair climb was 7:41 Fastest stair climb on a pogo stick: something like 58 minutes Most stairs in one day: Up the tower 17 times. Other numbers I don't remember, but had records listed: Fastest stair climb on a modified motorcycle!! Fastest stair climbs while carrying items, including: Engine from a Suzuki Samurai, 200 lb pumpkin. Most stairs fallen down: all 1776, on purpose. People will do some dumb crap to set a record.

It was quite the circus..walked around for about 6 hrs, spent an hour or so sitting down watching some of the actual auctioneering. Many, many Mopies ('68-70 Road Runners, '70-72 Cudas, Challengers, '68-70 Chargers, etc). Lots of Mustangs (incl. 2 red '69 Boss 429s) and various Shelbys.. There were quite a few '50s-60s big cars as well..the usual '57 Bel Airs, Corvettes and Thunderbirds, along with a massive '57 Roadmaster conv..a couple '59 Buicks, '59 and '60 Olds, a couple '59 Pontiacs and 4 '61 Catalinas and Bonnevilles.... DNA testing use to be quite expensive, now it's little more than 100 bucks. I decided to do this based on Mitochondrial DNA test results, which are passed down from Mother to Child unchanged from generation to generation with very little genetic drift. The results of this test were surprising to say the least, my German grandfather always used to call my German grandmother his Sweet Swede, there was a rumor that my mother's great great-grandmother came from Sweden or someplace north of Germany in the Nordic countries. It seems according to the DNA results, she actually came from Iceland, Swedish and Icelandic are very close languages linguistically. 90% of all my exac…

Two weekends ago my foster uncle was in Tampa looking for a fifth wheel at the Tampa International RV show. He was really interested in a couple of RV's and is planning to make a purchase soon. In October 2008, he bought a brand new half ton pickup truck and has put less than 3,000 miles on it. Since he is considering to buy this fifth wheel, he wants a 1-ton, diesel, F350 and does not want to keep more than one truck in his fleet. During our conversation, he offered me his existing truck at almost 60% of the price he paid. The truck is a quad cab, with its most powerful engine, upgraded stereo, cloth seats, 4x4, and other goodies. Since it is a non-GM truck, my…

Today has been awesome so far. I was called back into work after being laid off. During lunch I checked my miles from NorthWorst Airlines and I have enough to cover 4 tickets to Australia and back. So If i can get a new passport and permission to leave the country and AU will allow me to visit I think i will go out there for a week or two. I just have to decide who i want to take. I guess either My daughter and her BF or my parents. Or the highest C & G bidder...

A crane toppled over at one of our job sites today, crushing a Silverado, part of a Sierra, sheared off a corner of the contractor office, and flattened half of a guard shed. Amazingly, nobody was injured even though workers were in both buildings. The boom crane that fell was being used to erect two larger tower cranes (taken a couple hours before it tipped over).

I was out running around earlier, finishing up my Xmas shopping (I think, hmmm...). When I turned into my development, I realized it had not been plowed. We've got 7-8 inches of snow so far, and one of the streets is uphill to get back to my house. Starting out in second gear definitely helped me out on the road, but that stuff is DEEP for a Cobalt. The little guy spun and spun, I was in third gear, speedo reading 40 at 2500 RPM, prolly moving 1 mph, but made it up the hill and into my garage. My neighbors were standing out in their driveway, arms outstretched. "How the hell did you make it up that hill? We had to park at the bottom, we couldn't make it!" I just s…

Favorite wheels: 1963 Corvette Stingray Favorite roads to drive: Country roads around Capac and Almont A year or two ago, Olympic speed skater Jeanne Omelenchuk pushed her 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to 105 mph. Motoring Memories: Buick Wildcat, 1962-1970 Story and photo by Bill Vance Buick was long known as a somewhat conservative car, the type favoured by people like doctors and bank mangers. It used overhead valve straight-eight engines exclusively from 1931 to 1952 (its overhead valve V8 came in 1953), and carried an image of muted prestige - more than an Oldsmobile, but not quite the ostentation of a Cadillac. Occasionally however, there was a stepping out of character, and into the performance arena. Examples were the 1936 Century, named for its 161 km/h (100 mph) top speed, and the audacious, turbocharged 1982 Grand National. Another was the Wildcat, an unex…

I got a Southwest "wanna get away" moment to kick things off... I'm over by the bank, in the car, analyzing this 79 Cutlass Supreme and a 70s El Camino parked head-to-head. Cutty was quite clean, but for the slightly smashed-in-from-the-bottom grille, and the ElCo was pretty oxidized, but looked straight. OK, here's the rundown. El Co backs out to leave, while right next to the Cutty, this idiot comes in some bulls--t Yukon XL Denali at a painfully obvious bad angle (never mind that the poor older lady is putting her groceries in the trunk, and that he had five spaces to choose from, but chooses to pull right next to her). Whole lot looking right at this guy, inclu…

A big "no thanks" for me. I thought it was ok for people who needed it to survive. It has now become a sport. I couldn't imagine felling a large animal...though if a moose was headed my way, I wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger in self defense (I got real close to one on a Canadian Highway near Banff in 2003). There are some people I work with who do it. They don't seem to do it in the Sierra Nevada or in California. They tend to go to Montana or other more remote states. Not for me. Falling asleep on a warm beach on the Mediterranean: now you're talking.

Me. Yep good ol annoying Capriceman. I thought i was good at recovery. And with Ice/snow and a Rwd V8 Caprice sitting there i decide to go sliding down empty sidestreets and stuff. Well As i was going to fast I started drifting then countersteered some, hit gas, the car reacts totaly different then what i predicted. Im going side ways on a sheet of ice at around 25 down a normal narrow Suburb side street. everything i do cant slow it down or change its direction. once the car decides to stop, my front is in a snow bank on a curb. I felt like a total ass to because my buddy in the car was laughing at me. I throw it in [R] and nothing but slipage. So me and him get ou…

I can't recall the last time I've seen so much snow on the ground! We got hit with another 6 inches of snow this morning, and a big Nor'easter is taking aim at us for Wednesday. But between now and then we're supposed to be getting the coldest weather we've seen in years here. Sunday highs will only make it to 16 and lows will be -16 or colder! It's a frozen, if pretty wasteland out there. Now I know what it's like for FapTurbo in July. Got prepared for this and bought some Iso-Heet for the cars on active duty and Marine Sta-bil (red stuff is junk) for the hibernating Intrepid. So how's the weather in your neck of the woods?

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13862689/ Woman allegedly called 911 for ‘cutie’ deputy ALOHA, Ore. - A woman who called 911 to get "the cutest cop I've seen" sent back to her home got a date all right -- a court date. The same sheriff's deputy arrested her on charges of misuse of the emergency dispatch system. Washington County Sheriff's Sgt. David Thompson told KGW-TV of Portland it all started with a noise complaint called in last month by neighbors of Lorna Jeanne Dudash. The deputy sent to check on the complaint knocked on her door, then left. Thompson said Dudash then called 911, asking that the "cutie pie" deputy return. "He's the cutest cop I've seen in a long time.…

As time goes by, the influence of our fathers molds us into the people we are destined to be, yet, some things just never "take". I share some aspects of my father's personality, but some things about him remain mystifiers that I'll never adopt. For example, my father has a rather militant dislike for cats, wild rabbits, squirrels and groundhogs. He'd feel no remorse shooting them if they give him enough of a chance. I don't own a gun and don't want anything to do with them, and I have a "live and let live" attitude toward wildlife. I love my father and wouldn't change him. What things about your father seem out of step with the way you live your life? What things …

Lately I've been considering just what sort of serious vehicle purchase will come next for me. And by serious, I mean one that isn't a project or so old as to be impractical as a daily driver. At some point, I will need to replace the Tahoe and the ROPOS with a half-decent truck that I can plow with and use for all of the things I do workwise. But that can happen over time since the Tahoe now owes me some miles (and I like it). The vehicle I am considering will have to be better on fuel than the Tahoe (not hard to do), be a manual, and be something I can enjoy when I drive it. It will also have to be low-mileage and long trip worthy since I am way overdue for some goo…

http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoo...kruptcy-again/ From the article: President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That's good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market. Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unr…
