Been thinking that perhaps a new sort of isolationism might be a good thing for us right now. Not the old " let's ignore the rest of the world and use protectionism in our dealings with other countries" way. Just a strictly non-interventionist, and locally focused sort of way. The idea of what else defines this idea is still floating around in my head and not fully formed yet. But I see some logical reasons for it. Thoughts?

Lately i've rediscovered the joys of the library, and naturally the GM related books spark my interest... on recommendation from a friend, i took out SLOAN RULES, a biography of the wonderful ALFRED P SLOAN, and discusses how much of a business genius he was, and his transformation of Billy Durants shaky holding company into one of the quintessetial American companies.... The second book, which i just finished, is called THE CAR THAT COULD... now this book is written more like a novel then the nonfiction it is. It documents the EV1 program from its beginnings with Roger Smith's plan for the future to the release a few years later... the book is filled with twists and tu…

This weekend, while we were working on the lawn, I had Tammy move the Vette away from the garage so I could take care of the grass around that area. Ok, Tammy doesn't drive a stick shift very often, and had never driven our 2000 Corvette, so I told her to take it out and get some practice while I finished up around the garage. That was a mistake. She came back with one of the biggest smiles on her face that I have ever seen. Then she promptly asked if she could take to work on Tuesday (today). Tammy considers some of the cars hers and some mine. I think of them all as ours. So, she will ask to drive one of 'my' cars before driving it. Well, she's at work and so i…

Inflation: not good, and has a clear reason why it happens. Historically it's easiest seen in the worst times. Germany after WWI. Industry had been destroyed, therefor minimal wealth generation through manufacturing, mining, and farming. Paper money was printed to let government pay for it's expenditures because tax income was very minimal, ~1% of their budget at times. This caused their money to be devalued, like stock of a business that was losing money, with no hope of growth. the smartest german citizens bought gold and other currency before Hyper inflation happened. Wholesale Price Index: July 1914 1.0 Jan 1919 2.6 July 1919 3.4 Jan 1…

Or feel free to suggest something different but I think I am prolly getting a Garmin. I have a Garmin E-Trex for hiking and biking and just love it. I have owned it for about 4 years and it has been on many a trip out west. So feel free to chime in.

Its the official start of summer, well for me at least, I dont work Fridays, so its time to hit the beaches, lakes, rivers, whatever else you want to hit. We're going to St. Louis tomorrow to see the dinosaur exhibit at the zoo. Then Sunday is apparently river enjoyment day, its going to involve canoes and kayaks and possibly other floating craft. No plan for Monday. Anyone else have anything planned?

So yesterday we went to get the T&C out of the tow yard where it was being kept. Assuming it was drivable the plan was for me to drive it home with my girlfriend and mom following behind me. We get to yard, pay the bill and my girlfriend and I go to the van. It's way at the corner of the yard against a fence and about 6 inches away from some smashed up Elantra. I get in and start it up, then slowly back it out. I hear dragging and she points out the exhaust is on the ground...oh goodie. I move the van to an open space and notice that the force of the impact knocked it off of the hangers...no big deal. I get under the van and look around under it while I'm putting the …

In owning the car a week now, I've made some observations 1) 1st Tank of Gas - 26MPG (545Km) 2) Electric Steering not ideal but suited better to the Deltas than Epsilons 3) Battery in the Trunk - Strange 4) Engine- More Muffled than the Cavalier 5) Torque Delivery a more anemic 6) Brakes are weak in comparison to the Cavalier 7) Yes, A lot of hard plastic but at 27K Miles, it doesn't rattle 8 ) Gauge Cluster... Strange to have to look to the far left for the Speedo and have the Tach my line of sight 9) Interior Build Quality better than Malibu Maxx, almost on par with Impala 10) Closing the door from the inside sounds/feels more tinny than the Epsilons…

If you ask me why I come up with bone-headed ideas don't ask me why or where they come from... Last spring when I still had extra cash before another new Pontiac, new kitchen gadgets for the wife, and a son heading into college I looked into having our home professionally landscaped. Yeah well the two men father and son biz I had doing it had a slight problem the father fell off his roof and isn't doing so hot so now I am stuck landscaping. I have decent sized large front shrubs that need to go... The folks that were going to help landscape had a 2006 Silverado 2500HD with a Duramax and were going to "tow out the shrubs". Well I have got thinking and a hitch needs to go o…

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/ In a veto proof margin, no doubt enhanced by election political pandering, the House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure. The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow. The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto. The legislation a…

Recently have become mildly obsessed with the twilight era for vintage junkyards, which is happening right now. I have developed a small cyber toolbox (GoogleMaps, GlobeXplorer, MapQuest, Switchboard) to gather before & after aerial pics of junkyards across the U.S. Mostly this is to document where they were and their size, but it's also useful to today's scroungers to assess whether a given sight-unseen yard today looks worth the trip. I have gotten adept at recognizing ex-yards from space. Many times these automotive DisneyWorlds disappear when one's back it turned, leaving but a faint scar on the landscape. I've been in about 15 different yards over the years- I …

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/world/env....html?id=525590 You may have heard earlier this month that global warming is now likely to take a break for a decade or more. There will be no more warming until 2015, perhaps later. Climate scientist Noel Keenlyside, leading a team from Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Science and the Max Planck Institute of Meteorology, for the first time entered verifiable data on ocean circulation cycles into one of the U. N.'s climate supercomputers, and the machine spit out a projection that there will be no more warming for the foreseeable future. Of course, Mr. Keenlyside-- long a defender of the man-made global warming theor…

Here we go again. My final project was due today to be set up in the art gallery. As always, my project came down to the wire and I showed up at 3:30 (you could come in as early as 9am). A friend of ours organized a car show for a local high school. Apparently, someone had a video camera and put a couple of video compilations on YouTube. It was probably someone from the Mustang club. The show was small, but it was a success financially and actually had a good turn out given the size of the school and the fact that it was an inaugural event. The only bad thing was that we all got sun poisoning. The '68 can be seen at 3:06 of part 1 and the '73 can be seen at 3:31 of part 1. Not a bad showing for their first time out of the garage in a couple of years. Around 1:16 of part 1 is our friends (The one who organized the show) very sweet '79 Trans Am. Part…

Today is my Regal's 16th birthday. This morning, it had 244,073 miles on the odometer (that's almost 400,000 kilometers!) In this period, other than stuff that normally wears out (belts, hoses, brakes, batteries), I've only fixed the following, in this order: - exhaust donut connecting manifold to tailpipe - water pump - alternator - thermostat by-pass - 2 front wheel bearing assemblies (different times) - tie rod ends - 2 sensors: O2 and knock (different times) That's it. I'll have to wax it soon. The 100 degree temps have arrived. I still like it but am not that attached to it. But it has been reliable (so folks, don't knock the W-body too hard).…

http://www.lewrockwell.com/anderson/anderson214.html The Oil-Addiction Fallacy by William L. Anderson Watch any talking head, and when the subject comes to energy, one can expect to hear the mantra, Americans are “addicted” to oil, and especially “foreign oil.” This is repeated as though the repetition is proof that the premise is true. Thus, American taxpayers are currently being forced to contribute billions of dollars – and will be dunned many billions more in the future – for a number of measures that supposedly will “secure” the United States’s energy use and supplies in the coming years. What’s more, the debate about whether or not these energy programs are…

One of my helpers recently killed his Acura and I'm trying to help him find the ultimate "Granny car". Almost had an '88 Olds 88 today that only had 29k miles on it! My local (literally right around the corner from where I live), small-time Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer is closing per GM, at least that's what I was told today by the business manager. About a month ago, I noticed the inventory of older cars & trucks stored in the back of the dealership were missing. Then I noticed the used car inventory became smaller and smaller each passing week; the new vehicle inventory didn't seem to get any larger either (I noticed that the 4 G8 GT sedans they received apparently are their last new car deliveries; only one sold, the other 3 are still there with AMP stickers on them for $3k each ). Then on Saturday as I was passing the dealer…

If you decide you like it he'll sell you the car he doesn't own and therefore has zero legal right to sell? As I drive around, of course I'm always observing vehicles around me, it's some sort of obsession I have. So I got thinking of things about current design details that so many manufacturers share. I was wondering, who was the first? A. Plastic covered bumpers B. 'Round' tailights, meaning this overdone trend of round within a larger form. C. Rear spoilers D. Huge headlights....will this ever go away? E. Wedge/triganular tailights....I have grown to dislike this shape....almost every car does it. F. Five spoke wheels...has become so generic.

Energy Plan Political Pandering Whenever Congress puts together a bill attempting to find a solution to some sort of real or imagined problem, my immediate thought is that the bill do one of four things: It will worsen the problem at hand It will do nothing to solve the problem but instead create a new problem somewhere else It will worsen the original problem and create new problems In the very best case it will do nothing at all Consider the ethanol plan. Growing corn to produce ethanol was supposed to help make us energy independent. What happened was that subsidies to grow corn (an energy wasteful process without the subsidies), did not cause gasoline pri…

Something that has always bothered me about the Pontiac Solstice would be how they moved the placement of the arrowhead badge and the hood cutline from the concept car. The repositioning of the badge also gives the car more of a "cheeky" look that bothers me a little bit. Just something that I came to a full realization of while looking at my sig. Still a beautiful car, however, and it doesn't do much in the way of dampening my appreciation of the car.

It's a silver '87 with T-tops and a split bench seat, 46k original miles, very clean though not perfect, still titled in original owner's name. The seller wants $8,500 ( a bit high IMO) but he seems eager to sell it and willing to negotiate. The car is quite nice.

I have waxed them and polished them with spray wax alot but it still happend over the winter when I have MUCH less time to do this kind of stuff. Can I someone please help me, or am I stuck with the wheels like that? (Please say no!)

She got all fat, cranky and nauseous for NINE MONTHS just so you could pop out and bawl your little head off. Don't forget her special day this Sunday. Last week I drove my mom to Target to pick up a wedding gift for a relative. When we got out of the car, she looked at the fender of the car parked next to us and said "Look at that, it looks like somebody put sunglasses for a person with 3 eyes on that car." I said "That's a Buick Lucerne. Those are Buick portholes."

Is it just me or has things really slowed down over the past few months? It seems we had an abundance of new posts being made back around November of last year. Now everything has slowed down to a trickle.

Right now? In class. Well, I've been around a bit, just under the radar I guess. Remember that thread I posted a month or two ago about my grandfather being in the hospital? Well he passed away a half hour into April 28th. Prior to that time, I had been driving about an hour to the hospital and back about two or three times a week to both see him and support the family who took the loss pretty hard. Then I missed an entire week of school last week (sans Tuesday) to be with the family and go to my grandpa's viewings and funeral. Now I'm finally back at school and catching up on the stuff I've missed. Speaking of school, I'm at the end of the fifth week of this semester…

The other day I was out walking and something popped into my head about GM. Everyone says they have to many brands, including many within GM. I am not sure that they necessarily have to many brands as much as they have to many brands fighting for the same market. Perhaps GM needs to separate the brands more and going to the extreme as my mind often does I came up with the following to separate out the brands as best as they can be (albeit in a fantasy world): Chevrolet Core values: volume, affordability, practicality Core vehicles: FWD compact sedan/coupe, FWD midsize sedan/coupe, RWD volume large sedan Key competitors: Toyota, Honda, Ford...(other mainstream b…

Hey everyone! Got a new car, a 2008 Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit VWoA) and a "new" girlfriend Heather! (of like, five months so far). Plus, I'm computer illiterate if one will, and I am trying to figure out how to put one of my pics on my computer onto the signature area of posts, but I'm sure one of my friends can help me with that. Once I'm taught, I can do something well.

So this past Saturday was $50 Day at Holland's Used Auto, and my best hope of getting a good deal on replacement parts for our beaten up cars. Jessica and I got up bright and early at 5:30am, emptied out the T&C and put the things we thought we'd need in it and headed to Silvester's. We met at about 6:30 and followed Sixty in his RoadMonster to take care of some stuff, get breakfast and head to the junkyard. Our game plan was to hit the Prizms first, since they were near the entrance, then scope out the Cadillacs and proceed to the Intrepids. Even though it was only 8am there was already a good amount of people in the yard and they had a guy directing us to the park…

Although in may not be in the do-it yourself state you might prefer, I do believe your truck awaits. I found it at a car show in Laurel County yesterday. :AH-HA_wink: EDIT: Sorry that the photos will not show up here in the rotated state as they do on Photobucket. I will try to fix that later if you wish.

Of course... The Beast wouldn't be the Beast if it weren't a pain in the ass. This past week, it suddenly became much, much, much louder. Somewhere near the catalytic converter, it's either rusted through or rusted off completely. I haven't had a chance to put it up on ramps to see for sure. Peaking under, I can't really see too much. Everything is still there, it seems, however. On a noise level, it's not as loud as it would be if you just cut off the exhaust, a la demolition derby car, but its loud enough that everthing that can rattle inside, does. As well, something that's been going on a bit longer, there's this rattling coming from the rolling gear, suspension…

My parents bought a brand new 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ new; I was 8 y-o at the time. I essentially grew up with this car, and learned how to drive on it. May of 1993 my mom traded it in and it was gone forever (I did see it on two separate occasions in 1994). Ever since then, I've had a special place in my heart for these unloved GPs, and vowed one day to own one (even though it was never really mine, I treated it like it was my own before I bought my first car, a '78 Camaro LT, in 1992). Over the years I'd spot one for sale or just sitting alone, but all have needed work. Last Sunday I was out cruising around looking at dealer inventories and I spotted this: …

After a pretty harsh winter, I think my cars need a good waxing... Which leads me to an important question: What do you you guys/gals use? I've been a Mothers fan for years(my cav still looks new), but a buddy wants to me to switch to 3M.... He said it offers even more protection from the crappy weather here... Time for the Turtle Wax roll call.... :AH-HA_wink:

Friday evening after work, I stopped in at a new local diner to have supper. It had been a long time since lunch, and I was feeling pretty hungry. As I was waiting for my food, I caught myself staring at my server as she took care of her other tables. I realized my eyes were locked on her every move as the minutes ticked by, my table and my stomach empty. When she assured me "yours will be out soon!" with a little knowing smile, I became amused at myself and realized I probably had a half-crazed, desperate, "FEED ME!" look in my eyes, a look this waitress had probably felt dozens of times before.

I just realized today that I have been a member of C&G for five years this month. May 2003 was when I first registered, way back on the really old board. I was looking for some information on the Oldsmobile phase out and linked to here, which was still in a fledgling state and probably had only 200-300 members. And what kept me coming back was the Member's Talent area, the Skunkworks designs for the Chevelle, and the professional comprehensive reporting on automotive news. As long as I've been a member, we've had three major board redesigns, two large board failures, we've seen the last Oldsmobile roll off the line, we speculated what the C6 Corvette would look…

Last night while on my way to see a friend, I stopped off to fill up my Riv. After spending $40 to fill up from ABOVE a half tank, I proceeded north on Route 100 ( also known as Central Park Avenue) anyway about a mile up the road, I was cruising in the right lane at about 35MPH, it was dark out and raining, I had my wipers on. Suddenly, a dark blue '91 Accord pulls out of a parking lot, nearly takes the front of my Riv off, and pulls out into the road. He begins to gain some speed, at this point I had flashed him my high beams and was racing to catch up to him to curse him out. Just as I was catching up to him, I noticed two people crossing the road up ahead, and the…

in the search for a DD ive been trying to find gas mileage figures at possible cars... ive been using the fueleconomy.gov website (which doesnt go before 1985 ) and ive seen some old cars im interested... i just contacted a guy from my town with a 1980 V6 Malibu 4 door for $800... he swears its 22mpg... which if it is, i could stand that kind of mileage.... im trying to find info on it, no luck also, found a 76 Chevette for the same price... despite a chevette being a girl repellent, i might consider it if it gets decent mileage... might be nice to have a classic RWD chevy as a DD

So here i am, 1 month away from graduating High School... Scary. A few months ago i applied to Adelphi University, for Criminal Justice... they told me at the time i was getting a scholarship for my academics, but didnt tell me how much. Tuition + fees comes to $24,000 a year, and without winning the lottery, there would be no way i could go. I applied for every financial aid i could, and since my family is pretty poor, i hoped that would help. Welllllllllllllllllllllll i just got the letter a few days ago... $13,000 from Adelphi for Academics $1,500 from a Federal SOEG Grant $5000 From NYS Tuition Assistance Program $4,750 from Federal Pell Grant grand tota…

In the "Who Will Be Where This Year?" thread where I mentioned where I'll be in 2008 and early 2009, I also asked 2 questions: "Where is your favorite area?" and "Where do you want to go in your lifetime?". I thought these might be better suited for a different topic; thus, this thread. But, a twist, on both questions: 1 ... Where is your favorite area in your HOME country (for most of us, the US)? 2 ... Where do you want to go in your HOME country (for most of us, the US) in your lifetime? For me ... the answers are easy: 1 ... Nashville/Jackson TN 2 ... Everywhere I haven't been already on one of my road trips, to see the sights and, of course, meet more p…

I was watching this on the news and they mentioned a few towns where the gang had been active in drowning college students: LaCrosse, WI Dubuque, IA St. Cloud, MN Minneapolis, MN New York City Metro Detroit, MI Tampa, FL Canton, NY I didn't catch the rest... It's really disturbing to say the least. The RCMP and City Police in Edmonton and Calgary are going over their case files, it may be that there were a few done here in Calgary *cringes*. At the very least, I know I'm safe from these thugs. I'm a teetotaler for life and would never fit the profile of someone they'd go after, but still... In light of the whole Toyota Tacoma massive buyback by Toyota..... Let's say you come across someone who does not know of this event and is selling their Tacoma for fairly cheap. You buy it and in turn, sell it to Toyota for more than what you paid. I wonder.... Would it be worth it? Just a thought. Nothing more.
