Once upon a time the United States made things. We harnessed the energy of coal and the power of mighty rivers to run factories. Steam engines spun and generators hummed and we used the electricity to smelt iron and aluminum, to light homes and shops, and to power chemical plants and mills. Cities sprang up. Cities with names like Cleveland and Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Newark. In these cities the iron was made into I-beams and thumbtacks and Buicks, and the chemical plants turned out dyes and plastics and penicillin. The wheels of industry turned. Cities grew. AMERICA PROSPERED. We made everything from a pocket watch to a battleship, and we were prou…

  9. WASHINGTON - Gasoline prices have jumped above $3 a gallon in some parts of California and Hawaii, and may hit that level in other parts of the country when the busy summer driving season approaches. “It kills me,” said Gloria Nunez, 53, as she filled her Ford Explorer SUV at a San Jose gas station. Nunez, a clerk for a communications company, has started working a couple hours of overtime each week to help soften the blow. “All of a sudden you kind of have to watch your pennies,” she said. Analysts say drivers should brace for more increases in the coming weeks. Crude oil, which makes up about half the price of gasoline, is trading above $60 a barrel. Higher demand, r…

From Craigslist: I believe the car originally belonged to my Aunt Betsy, who was born in Wisconsin in 1931, and later migrated to California in 1954, while engaged to my Uncle Talbert. She had a Tabby cat named Blinky, who died in the spring of 57. Blinky had 6 kittens in 1955, all of whom she regrettably gave away at a fair in Modesto. The cats where never seen or heard from again. Betsy left Modesto in 1963, approximately at the time she allegedly helped purchase the car for her lover, Benson, whom Talbert was unaware of. OK, the plan is this: tonight, under cover of darkness (and I'm going to dress in a black leotard and paint my face black to ensure I go undetected), I am going to SWITCH GAS TANKS between my truck and the tiny Yaris. What do you guys think? Huh? It's quite the brainstorm, eh? Instead of $90+ to fill my tank, it might take about, ohhh... $35. KaCHING! Instant savings at the pump! I just wonder how long it will take my neighbor to notice how much mor…

Anyone here with interesting names for their computers..i.e. other than the IP address, giving it a hostname? It's kind of a computer geek thing, I think...friends of mine name their computers after things like sci fi characters, Star Trek characters, places in the Lord of the Rings movies, etc... when I set up my current home network about 5 years ago I went the naming scheme of vintage GM car names that end in 'A'... as I've added computers, I've added names... my network now consists of Ventura, Catalina, Electra, Invicta, Impala, and Omega.

Just an observation. At time of writing this, 14 out of 69 posts today were GM focused. I'm just throwing this out there: Is C&G becoming more a general automotive interest(and much not related to anything automotive) forum rather than a GM 'cheers and gears' forum? Was it always this way? Does it matter? ( And for the record, I'm as 'guilty' as anyone else).

Since I'm not up on Hair Metal, I thought I'd try a variation on the theme of Walt's contest. This album cover featured a white mouse crawling out of a white egg on a white background. The band was what I would call extreme Prog. Anyone?

  81. Found this in the Hemmings eWeekly newsletter.. One for the Rust Belt See, what goes around really does come around. Word comes to us of Mack Trucks Inc.’s plans to move its highway truck production from its New River Valley plant in Virginia to that traditional stronghold of the Bulldog (and classic vehicles in general), Macungie, Pennsylvania. The big rigs will be built alongside construction and trash trucks that are already assembled in Macungie, in a factory that’s nearly across the street from the onetime Mack museum in the same town. It’s a reversal of the timeworn practice of shifting such manufacturing jobs to the South. The New River Valley plant, inciden…

Been a while. Good to see you guys are still in operation post-bankruptcy. Some of you may remember me, I wasn't the most active poster but I have been a member since 2002 (before the real big redesign back in 2005). Also, you should be happy to know I'm still carrying the GM torch in other message boards I'm active in. Oh, and I guess I have to post me and my wife's current rides. I'm still in the old beater, a 2001 Cavalier. It actually had a fuel pump failure last summer, which set me back $500. But, bought used in 2005 and thats the only problem I've had, so I can't complain much. As for my wife, we sold the 2006 Escape back in September and bought a 2010 Mazd…

If you caught on right away... my dog Lucky died. He's been struggling for the past few days and he finally couldn't hold on any longer. You know... I'm mixed, as far as emotions. I'm devastated that he's gone, yet I'm angry. Mostly at my parents for only contributing to his death. They refused to take him to a vet saying that they couldn't afford it. I mean... what if it were me? Would they not be able to afford it then, either? Come on... He was my dog and I loved him. Wasn't that enough? They said this for a long, long time saying that there was nothing to be done and that he couldn't be saved. That was over 5 f@#king months ago. What's their excuse. I just wish I had …

  88. As I've been resting (or restless, depending on one's point of view) since my gallbladder surgery December 30, I've had time to watch some of the Dukes of Hazzard episodes from Seasons 1 & 2. And, while I was watching a couple episodes from Season 2, I noticed this "glaring" peculiarity (among others, of course).... In Episode 14, "The Runaway" (originally aired 01/11/1980), Daisy's yellow car dives over a cliff and explodes after the accelerator gets stuck while Bo and Luke are in it. That same episode, Daisy is given "Dixie", her Jeep, by the father of the runaway gal. Skip ahead 4 episodes to Episode 18, "F…

  91. Boomers: 3 ways the crisis whacks your retirement 10/17/2008 12:01 AM ET Link to MSN Money For the generation of Americans born between 1946 and 1964, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression comes at the worst time imaginable. Baby boomers are nervously trying to navigate their nest eggs to a safe port in a stormy sea of wild stock market swings, falling home values and a weakening job market. It can take years for nest eggs to recover from heavy investment losses. But time is something baby boomers -- the oldest of whom turned 62 this year -- just don't have enough of. Here are the problems near-retirees now face and what (if anything) baby boomer…

  93. Recall: Various Volvos, Different DCXs, Few Fords The government announced four auto recalls Wednesday affecting about 300,600 vehicles. More than half of the vehicles being recalled -- 170,099 -- are Volvo passenger cars, station wagons and SUVs from the 1999-2002 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. Volvo Cars of North America, a unit of Ford Motor Co., is recalling vehicle speed controls on some C70, C70 convertible, S60, S70, S80, V70, V70XC and XC70 models. A malfunctioning electronic throttle module may cause the vehicles to unnecessarily go into "limp home" mode, in which the vehicle's speed is limited to 10 to 30 m.p.h., NHTSA s…

First of the odds and ends is my '71 Ford Mustang. It had a good strong 302 with an automatic. It wasn't really much of a looker, but it was in pretty good shape. I replaced the painted rear bumper with a new chrome one and added the Mustang letters to the trunk after these pics were taken. When I got it the chrome trim at the leading edge of the hood and fenders as well as both bumpers were painted body color. I replaced them all with new chrome pieces.

  97. Polish newspaper claims 'Pedobear' is 2010 Vancouver Olympic mascot A Polish newspaper mistakenly identified "Pedobear", a notorious internet meme, as one of the mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Gazeta Olsztynska published an image showing the bear alongside genuine Olympic mascots Quatchi, Sumi, Miga and Mukmuk to illustrate a feature about the Games. It appears that the newspaper lifted the picture from Google Images, unaware that it had been created as a prank by Michael Barrick, a Canadian artist and graphic designer. Pedobear, who is on the far right of the picture, was originally devised by members of the anarchic 4chan message board as …
