The "driving season" is far from over (well, at least, I hope it is far from over) ... and these mileage milestones should be different by the end of the year [when I'll take a more "detailed" tally and comparison ... I just love statistics, apparently], but I had all 4 of my older Monte Carlos out Saturday and Sunday this past weekend and, as of late Sunday afternoon (after filling each with gas), found myself at these mileages markers.... Browny ... 1972 MC ... 142,900 ... 13.26 mpg Elvira ... 1976 MC Landau ... 58,045 ... 15.73 mpg Sweet Pea ... 1979 MC Landau ... 141,175 ... 14.31 mpg Sweet Tea ... 1981 MC SC ... 189,450 ... 16.91 …

We all know how kids are. They anxiously await that first taste of freedom that comes with a driver's license, but a lot of them just aren't ready for driving life. Which car do you nominate as C&G's Best First Car, 2006? I nominate the 1973 Chevy Impala four door hardtop with a transplanted 2.5L Iron Duke engine, 3 on the tree transmission, and no power steering or brakes. That should keep 'em out of trouble while learning to drive in a most basic way. I truly believe everyone should know how to drive a manual transmission, and we should all know how to handle a vehicle with no power steering or brakes. Everything else would be cake, and ya never know when you'…

First of the odds and ends is my '71 Ford Mustang. It had a good strong 302 with an automatic. It wasn't really much of a looker, but it was in pretty good shape. I replaced the painted rear bumper with a new chrome one and added the Mustang letters to the trunk after these pics were taken. When I got it the chrome trim at the leading edge of the hood and fenders as well as both bumpers were painted body color. I replaced them all with new chrome pieces.

While there is the occasional domestic or foreign model that gets my attention, there has always been at least one GM model available that has suited my needs perfectly. I'll grant that the number of GM models with the power to part me from my money has often been few, it has always been at least one more than the asian manufacturers have ever had to offer. To date, no asian manufacturer has ever built any model that I would actually spend my money on. That's right, nothing past or present from Toyota, Honda or their ilk has ever appealed to me in a meaningful fashion. This is not a case of loyalty, just plain fact. The future looks to remain exactly the same in this reg…

...my ride. After so many new vehicles in so few years, as of this morning I no longer own any vehicle. Soon enough by paper too, once Chase is paid off. Since moving to Philly and working with Acura, I've been demo driving for several months and parked the Mazda. Already miss it, but a payment when it's never used and a free new car is part of my pay didn't make sense...so away the CX-9 went to a new home in the suburbs, to a couple who specifically (and luckily for me, as it was tough) wanted FWD and nothing to do with AWD, trading a 1999 Sienna. Weird. First time since 2006 I've been car-owning-less My demo 2011 Acura TSX Tech will continue to do for a while, follo…

I went to Ohio for the holiday weekend to visit family...hot and humid (felt more like July weather than May!), lots of sun, some heavy thunderstorms. Some highlights-- I really liked my '07 Mercury Grand Marquis GS rental from Hertz... it was a lot of fun driving a V8, RWD, BOF old-school American land yacht...both on I-70/I-77 and on eastern Ohio's fantastic smooth, low-traffic winding hilly backroads (state routes and county roads around the Amish country of my youth)... it handled better than I thought it would on the rolling, twisty roads... (At the rental car counter, the guy tried to persuade me to take a Montego or Five Hundred, but I had specifically rese…

We took one of these Lifang scooters as a down payment on a JGC and damn if it isn't kick-ass... The most appealing aspect beyond mere kick-assery is the economy. It was 4/5 empty yesterday, I filled it up for $2.15, drove about 35 miles around downtown St. Petersburg and then topped it off for $.75.

Inflation: not good, and has a clear reason why it happens. Historically it's easiest seen in the worst times. Germany after WWI. Industry had been destroyed, therefor minimal wealth generation through manufacturing, mining, and farming. Paper money was printed to let government pay for it's expenditures because tax income was very minimal, ~1% of their budget at times. This caused their money to be devalued, like stock of a business that was losing money, with no hope of growth. the smartest german citizens bought gold and other currency before Hyper inflation happened. One of the guys at the local electrical supply house just bought a Buick Grand National...for $2500. It ain't pretty. It's got a million Jesus loves you stickers on it, a regular Regal fender for one of the front fenders, the headliner is missing, and it needs paint in the worst sort of way. And it's got rust, but very minor. Also comes with a stack of paperwork that my tape measure says is three inches thick, the motor and tranny have been rebuilt by GOOD local people, the rest of the interior is damn near perfect, and it's a T-top car. Oddly enough, it was ordered with every option, including the upgraded stereo, but no posi rear end. Making me even sicker is…

My dog Lucky developed a limp about three weeks ago. Given that it manifested itself after she a) had been roughhousing with our other dogs and b) jumped off the deck, I decided to have her looked at. The vet on call first said it was a sprain and gave me some happy pills to give to her. Even on the happy pills she still favored it and it got no better. So I brought her back in and the same vet ran bloodwork on her. The regular vet I regularly deal with said the bloodwork came back positive for Lyme Disease, and told me to stop the happy pills and give her these antibiotics instead. One week later, still no improvement. Last Thursday I take her back to my regular vet and …

Last night, I was driving home and saw some nice gas prices. I found, at a Safeway filling station, in Northern California (though not coastal), gas for $ 2.52.9 and that was prior to the 3 cent Safeway club card discount. That puts it at a hair under $2.50. That same Safeway, 6 months ago, had gone as high as $ 4.49.9. Looks like I may take a few road trips. What's happening with fuel prices in your area?

GM gave me the 2010 SRX for a long weekend. Quite a good car. With the AWD and adaptive "FE3" suspension, the handling starts to feel almost Audi-like. Looks great inside and out. Absolutely kills the RX in styling. I didn't really like the way the SRX looked on the outside at first, but the more I see it, the more I like it. Just one of those cars you need to see in person.

Continuing with the C&G Automotive Awards 2006 presentation, which vehicle do you, dear readers, nominate as C&G's Most Powerful Love Magnet Car for 2006? Let's face it, first impressions are important, and most of us choose a vehicle that we feel extends our personality. For those of us who are single, and even for those of us who are taken, but still like to be the recipient of admiring glances on the road, which vehicle tops the list for attracting friends and potential dates?

Why, Tuscon, AZ of course Got these in an email this morning, and I've seen this "boneyard" in person. Military aircraft as far as the eye can see. Email text follows: I agree it is difficult to comprehend the size of the facility and the number of aircraft stored there. Of course the important thing to remember is that they are all capable of being returned to flying condition if the need ever arises. There was an excellent book published a few years ago on the celebration of the "Boneyard's" 50 anniversary. It was written by Philip D. There's really only one thing which can be said to accurately depict my reaction to this movie: With that out of the way, I really enjoyed this movie, and going by the audience applause and cheering at the end, so did a lot of other people. It's far better than the second movie and better than the first. There's a much better defined a plot, nods to the series, the main characters have actual depth now and there's some pretty emotional moments. The Deceptions can be genuinely scarey at times and the action scenes are incredible. It's not Hamlet, but totally worth seeing if you're a Transformers fan.

You know, I found a little more respect for the last generation Toronado today. I was browsing the Heritage section of Oldsmobile's site today, and I looked through the 1980s photos. There was a photo of a basket handle shifter, a part that was sometimes seen on hi-po Chevelles and Camaros back in the late Sixties and Seventies. When I go to a classic car show, I always get a kick out of that particular interior piece. I thought it was initially part of a concept car's interior. Then I saw that a part of the side-out pop-up read "1986 Toronado." Also, the last-generation Toronado dash had such an array of interesting features. But, I'll let the photos try to speak that p…

WASHINGTON - Employers ramped up hiring in March, driving the unemployment rate down to 4.4 percent, matching a five-year low. It was a surprisingly strong performance in an economy that has otherwise shown signs of sluggishness recently. The new snapshot, released by the Labor Department on Friday, also showed that employers boosted their payrolls by a strong 180,000 in March, the most since December. Workers’ also saw their paychecks get bigger. The fresh figures suggested that companies are not feeling a need to dramatically clamp down on hiring in the face of the slower overall economic activity and the deep housing slump. “There’s been worry that housing troubles…

Are these the most boring cars you can own? G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy www.CheersandGears.com MSN posted a story today about the most boring cars money can buy and one common point was the lack of driving excitement and what you got for the price. Interesting is that many of these autos are also considered to be rental fleet dumps. The other clear point being made is that they are not haters of hybrids, but of the CVT transmission that makes the driving a bore. Their list starts off with number one; Mitsubishi Mirage Toyota Prius Volkswagen Jetta Mitsubishi Lancer Honda Civic Hybrid Nissan Altima Chevrolet Tahoe Acura ILX Buick LaCrosse Nissan LE…

Supposedly, 07/07/07 is a lucky day. Not 100% "lucky" for me ... but, finally ... for the first time in 2007 ... my older 4 Monte Carlos saw road pavement! My sister, Joy, came over early Saturday morning so we could clean up her 2007 Dodge Dakota quad cab w/manual transmission. Once we got done, we ate lunch ... and then went to the garage where the older 4 are stored. We drove each car about 15 miles ... just enough to get gas in 'em. MPGs were anywhere from just over 12 to upwards of 17; I don't really count these, considering how long they've been sitting and the "false start" a few weeks ago. I drove the '72 and '79; sis drove the '81 and '76. I would've liked…

Went to an autox test & tune day yesterday. I made 2 runs, Em (my wife) made 2 runs, and I made one more run. LOVE the new tires! (Khumo Ecsta XS) Of course, when comparing to the all-seasons I was on last year, it doesn't take much to be impressed. Anyway, on this run, the new tires let me keep my speed up very well. So well, that I ran right past redline in 2nd gear. An odd sound was followed by some power loss, and I thought I could hear the engine "chugging" as I finished the run. Parked it & let it cool down quite a bit, started it up & couldn't hear anything odd. Made one more run, and it definitely had power loss, and I could hear the chugging by the e…

Just another one of those little annoyances in life that irks the hell out of me. The mouse I'm using on my computer right now is so damn useless. It's the garbage old-fashioned kind that uses a ball instead of the newer (and much better) optical laser or whatever. It never wants to move smoothly anymore despite me cleaning it out several times. I always have to bang the thing against the desk to get it to work semi-properly. You can imagine how much of a PITA this is when you're trying to work in Photoshop or anything that requires precision. <_< It doesn't even have a scroll wheel for God's sake. I'm gonna pick up a cheap optical mouse w…

I went downstairs last night to let my dog out to pee, and when I turned the back light on, I saw two slugs fu*king while stuck to my sliding glass door. Being the mean guy that I am, I decided to break up the party by sprinkling salt on them. They unhooked themselves, contracted their bodies, and started going in circles while secreting a shitload of slime all over my glass door. It was DISGUSTING. It looked like a camel with a cold sneezed on it. They finally dropped off the glass and started (relatively) running away. I immediately turned the hose sprayer on the door, but that slug slime is tough! It stuck like Krazy Glue, but finally, the full-blast spray …

I've thought about this a lot of times. They keep adding gears to these cars, but I'm not sure I'm much of a fan. I think six speeds is where it should be limited, maybe 8. My mom has a new Vue XR and it's the first 6 speed auto I've driven. It's a real smooth transmission, but it just seems like it shifts way too much, even if it's hardly noticeable. Yes, technology is getting better in these cars and soon you won't even know when the vehicle shifts at all, especially with dual clutches and all that good stuff. Maybe I'm old school though because I like to feel that upshift or occasional downshift to go WOT. Thoughts on this?

I, too, am again considering selling my 300EX (ATV) and my GA for another car. I still don't know why, either. It's almost like it doesn't satisfy me anymore, but I mean, I do love it as I've said so many times. I just don't know what to do... Anyways, this thread is just to get some suggestion IF I do decide I want to replace it. Please, no mention of a Fiero. It'll depress me. Also, I'm looking at being able to afford anything up to $4000 or $5000. Again, that's about the limit. It might even be less than that if I can't get as much as I think I can out of my vehicles... -The first idea I've had is a 95 or 96 Satu…

DMT Imagine a world where nothing you know now would exsist. An alternate reality if you will. This is what most people decribe DMT as. It has been dubbed the "businessman drug" because the intense effects only last around 30min. The effects are sudden and without warning, where our reality disappears and you see things that have never exsisted. Could you handle this? Would you try it? Who else thinks this is extremely freaky, but cool at the same time? website with more info Hyperspace

This guy lives down the block from me, and I have never heard the truck on the road, so I don't know if he put a 350 in it, but here's a blurry pic of a ~1988 Chevy S10 Dualy. I'm sure it is more of a "just because" conversion than for any real hauling purpose, but it still looks cool.

I have been a little busy and have wanted to go see a flick. For some stupid reason, I wanted to see "Poseidon." The reviews were not good, but I love ships. Two years out of college, I got to go on the QE2 but I was hooked long before then as a little kid when we would sail out of NY on other liners to go see relatives on the other side of the Atlantic. Is "Poseidon" any good? Any good comedies or mysteries out there? Reg, where are you?

This is purposely vague, but I'm curious if anyone has ever talked to a couselor or therapist about anything? Did you find it helpful/useful? Was it worth your time? How did you go about finding someone you felt comfortable with? I'm not looking for anyone to give specifics. An answer in general terms would be appreciated.

Price was right, pulled the Solstice wheels and added a set of dipped SKY wheels. Not a Turbo I got this thing for under $10K before tax so I took it, wife loves it. Always liked the Solstice alot, it's just the SKY looks so much better. I kinda like owning two orphan brands, maybe I'll look for a clean Oldsmobile next.

During my October road trip, I met someone from ChevyTalk.org who was a student of my grandfather in Ames OK. During the evening conversation, he happened to mention he used to live in Ames OK ... where my Mom and her brothers/sister/parents had once lived ... and we quickly discovered the connection, once I mentioned my grandfather's name. With that experience in mind, where all have YOU lived? I'd bet some of us are "more connected" than we think.... As for me, I've lived in Elgin all my life, except, of course, for semesters at college in N Manchester IN (near Fort Wayne) ... and a month in Nashville TN in September 1996.... First off, apologies to caddycruiser and regfootball. Earning a living can be difficult at times, I know... I stopped @ the local Ford dealership this afternoon to check out a new Escape, it was an SE AWD 1.6, priced at $27k. Usually this dealership lets ppl browse, but today a salesguy came out and started pitching. He said "yeah, how do you like it?" I said, "Yup, the new Focus wagon," and so the tone was set. He said with the automatic liftgate, Ford is cautioning ppl against waving your leg back and forth to open it because you can fall down. Just one kick straight ahead is the preferred way to do it. I asked if there will be a warning label to avoid lawsuits.…
