In the 60's and 70's my parents collected Beetles like they were going out of style. My dad and a friend of his could yank an engine, tear it down, reassemble and throw it back in the car in no time. Eventually having kids caught up and my dad hasn't owned one in years. Cut to 2007. I spent insane amounts of time looking for a "kayak car" that I would be cheap, reliable and I could use for a handful of mile per year at least, ideally it would be reliable enough to let me unload my Fusion. After having a few things fall through (still pissed about the '87 Caprice wagon" I put my search off until spring 2008. Cut to yesterday. During a casual conversation, I learn …

Good evening! Its been a while since Ive posted outside the Merchandise forum. My lease on my '17 Traverse is coming to an end in the next couple months. Once again, I am not finding many good deals on GM vehicles at the moment. I am holding out a little longer, to see how incentives go. I just cant fathom that the same trim level Traverse in the new body style is ~125-150 more a month. Last time I ran into this with the car, I ended up buying a Charger since I couldnt get what I wanted from GM. Now on my third Charger, I dont regret it. I have been seeing ads for the new '19 Ram with a great lease price. Could I end up with no GM vehicles in the next two mo…

So I setup and in-cockpit video camera during today's flight lesson. The last two lessons, we'd been working towards me taking over more of the controls. There are three main controls in a helicopter you have to be working...sometimes all at once. The cyclic (stick in your right hand,) the collective (lever in your left hand) and the pedals under each foot. The collective also has a twist grip throttle control on the handle. A landing approach is one situation where you need to be adjusting all 3 controls at once. Today was the first day I was doing all the work on the cyclic, the pedals, and as much of the collective as I could manage. Kinda hard for a newbie with 5 fl…

Link: Fake Craigs List Ad-- "Men hungry for sex besieged a Brooklyn woman with phone calls after spotting a bogus ad on Craigslist that said she was looking to turn tricks to pay off Christmas debt The callers were responding to the racy ad, which read: "I'm a real hottie looking to earn extra cash to pay off Christmas debt." The data entry specialist had to change her phone number. "I don't want to constantly look over my shoulder," she said. O'Malley said she was further peeved when Craigslist would not help her locate the pervert." -- Theres lots of dirty stuff on the internet but I think this ranks right up there.

If anyone here bothered to picked up Tool's 2001/2002 release "Lateralus" and listen to track 13, "Faaip De Oiad," you may already have heard the major bulletpoint of this radio phone call. For those that haven't heard about this at all, read on and afterwards, click the link. In 1997 -- hell if I know the day and month -- Art Bell told listeners to call in and spill the beans on Area 51, if, in fact, there is something there at all to spill the beans about. Well, ol' Art may have gotten more than he bargained for... When listening to this mp3 file, try your best to hold all judgement back to the very end of the file has been played. This guy, for God's sake, is cryin…

Just returned from a few days at Universal Studios Orlando (stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel) and we spent three nights at the annual Halloween Horror Nights. My wife and I are big horror fans and of Halloween. Here's some choice pics from the trip: When you first walk in, there is the "Horror Comes Home" street that walks you to "The Arrival" stage. Along this street is a bunch of strange characters: Here's me and an evil woman on stilts: My wife with this creepy stilt guy: This guy creeped me out the most, especially in the dark: And yes, that is a plastic chest-plate: Then there is a little show called "The Arrival" where the Devil takes the ashes of HHN …

My new apartment faces the Cedar River and every day I have been watching the flooding going on around here. The road I take to work will be flooded over sometime Monday and apparently levels may reach those of the Flood of '93. Parts of downtown Des Moines are flooded and Iowa City is starting to sandbag. There are stretches of fields along rivers that have become huge lakes in Eastern Iowa. The good news is that after the Flood of '93, a lot of cities built earth berms along their rivers so hopefully if we have another 500 year flood it won't be so devastating.

I don't consider myself handy but... this was pretty easy actually. I just put in a window mount air conditioner. I had to take out a fixed pane of glass to do it. I just ripped out some sheilding and pushed on the window, and it came off the caulking and popped right out. I was worried I was going to break it putting it in. The only problem is that I can't find my caulking, or my duct tape, so right now all the air leaks are sealed with scotch tape. Yes, its actually strong enough - 3M makes some good scotch tape, apparently. So, what else around the house is surprisingly easy? Has anyone else fixed something or installed something that they can give tips on? While …

Okay, so earlier this year my wife was testing her employer's online travel site and "accidentally" booked an AirTrans airlines ticket. Of course she had to pay for it and it hasn't been used to date (we should have figured out how to use it when we went to Walt Disney World in May, but she went through a travel agent). I was going to use it to fly to the NAIAS in Detroit in January, but recently learned that the ticket expires December 31. It's roughly a $120 ticket, so it's not like the family can take a trip anywhere, it's really a one-person trip. So I was thinking, a'la Yes Man with Jim Carey, where can I fly round trip to for a day, that would be worthwhile? I …

Kicking this off mid month since I did not see anyone else start a February thread. Saw a rather dirty but new GMC Hummer EV Truck. Was really surprised how tall and big it is. Thought it was the same length as my 2006 Escalade ESV which is 221 inches long and the GMC Hummer EV Truck is 217 inches long, so only a 4 inch difference between the autos. Very cool looking and I love the stance.

One is aimed at enthusiasts and the other is aimed towards artists (since the judges are from the art department I figured it would be good to appeal on their level). Tell me what you guys think...if it pushes the idea of the ad successfully or not, if it's too much or too little text, if the wording is good and so on. Extremely said day for anyone who has an appreciation of these old warbirds. Apparently there was a fire on engine #2 shortly after takeoff. The pilot found a field and made a successful emergency landing. Everyone on board escaped. At the time teh fire was small and it was thought the plane could be saved. However the firefighters sat and watched it burn, claiming that the ground was too soft for the trucks to drive on. This last part really aggravates me. Last time I checked, an 18 ton plane weighs more than a firetruck. yet they made a successful landing on said field. And to add insult to injury, footage shows the lazy bastards with their trucks on the field half-ass…

Yesterday my friend and I stopped at Lowell Used Auto to see if they had any Prizms in the yard that I could get the parts I needed off of: trunk lid, rear bumper cover, bumper reenforcement, and the left tail light. I was telling how how it would be nice if I could find one the same color as ours...although it'd be highly unlikely...I've never see a Crimson Cloak Mica in the junkyard before. He told me he didn't think there'd be any way I'd find one the same color and that I'd have to settle for a blue or green or white or whatever one. Which I agreed. I am usually never awake at this hour. I dreamed that I became friends with an inner city kid. Somehow I ended up being asked to drive vehicles for him and his other buddies, from one place to another in the city. It was winter time, there was snow on the ground. He was driving an Escalade, I was riding with him. Throughout the dream, I could feel a growing awareness of what was really happening. He was part of a drug gang and I was an unwitting driver, parking these blingy vehicles and leaving them in rundown, unfamiliar parts of town. We park the Escalade and I ask him something through mind waves (no talk) like "what do you want me to do next?"…

Sighs, it never rains but it pours, right? I had my new 71 Camaro at a show a couple of weeks ago and on the way home I started to hear a knocking from the engine compartment. LOUD. I immediately got into a weigh station (lucky it was right there) and shut down. Thankfully my brother had trailered his 73 to the same show and we unloaded it and put my car on the trailer. He then let me drive his car to my place (with only 100 miles on the new engine) while he followed me. The next day Tammy (my wife), our 2 kids (7 and 11), and I pulled the engine out and tore it down. The front two piston rods were completely drive at the main bearings. In fact number 2 had no main…

LOS ANGELES - Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon’s scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America’s history, has died, his wife, Betty, said Tuesday. He was 93. “My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued from her husband’s office in Rancho Mirage. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.” The statement did not say where Ford died or list a cause of death. Ford had battled pneumonia in January 2006 and underwent two heart t…

Although they look like they might be some sort of "marital aid", these are actually sterling silver salt and pepper shakers that came down through my dad's side of the family. I did a little research and discovered that they were made between 1920 and 1930 in NYC by P.H. Locklin & Sons. The puzzling thing is the monogram - it appears to be a "G". I can't find anyone on that side of the family with a "G" name. The pics aren't so great, but does anyone see some other letter in the monogram?

Hey all, Does anybody have any opinions to share about baltimore? My girl friend and I are thinking of moving there late next year. We both graduate in may and I can easily get another senior paralegal or project manager job in DC. We both like the idea of Baltimore because it is so much cheaper then the greater NYC area where we live now even though we would both be working in DC and we would be getting paid roughly equal to NY wages. From what I've gathered Baltimore has parts you wouldn't want to be caught dead in but has great parts along the river like Ferderal hill. We're both suckers for row houses and we've been to some of the good areas and really like t…

At least for a while. My Tahoe tried to kill itself yesterday by bleeding oil all over the place. It's in the barn and parked until I can find the source of the leak - what a huge mess!

Oh, why did I open my mouth? Our firm hired a new safety director a couple of months ago. He seems like a good fellow, and knows what he is doing on his job. He is quite professional, amiable and good conversationalist. During one of the safety meetings, he told us that he raced his vehicles, and will be more than happy to start a club for at our firm so young dudes and dudesses (yeah there are a couple of gearheaded girls like our own GMpartsgirl) of our firm can race and enjoy. The conversation was going great. I asked him what vehicle he drove; to which he said a 2008 Civic Si, with some modifications in progress. I thought it was perfectly fine – different…

So I refinanced my 6 recently, from 4% to 2.24%. and from 5 years to 5.5 years. I was paying a little more than required previously to round it off at $500/month. Right now I'm planning to pay $200/2weeks, but the required is ~$360/month. what would you do? pay it off faster.... pay the minimum and bank the savings... something else?

Interesting article in car and driver... http://blog.caranddriver.com/why-honda-is-in-even-more-trouble-than-you-think-deep-thoughts/ To many observers, Honda appears to be going through the corporate equivalent of a mid-life crisis. Supply problems from the effects of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and flooding in Thailand, along with less-than-complimentary write-ups on the new Civic by Car and Driver, Consumer Reports, and others, are bearing the brunt of the blame for the slump in calendar-year 2011 sales. Further issues: Acura’s inability to attain tier-one luxury-car consideration or status among consumers, Honda’s attempt to build a pickup truck, and the fir…

I couldn't help but notice Honda's advertisements for the Odyssey- stuff like "The Van is BACK" and "Respect the Van" along with all of the crazy psychadelic colours and whatnots and think to myself, either Honda is trying to appeal to new "hippies", people of the 1960's/`70's, or of course, nothing like the classic clam bake in a van, eh? Let's get one of those. Any other thoughts?

Enterprise Rent-A-Car delivered a Saturn Outlook to the dealership shop after the check-engine light appeared and the engine quit running. The problem? Enterprise records showed zero oil changes after 30,000 miles. Brutal results below. As you might expect, going 30,000 miles without an oil change is not a recommended break-in procedure, and as a result the engine oil completely broke down turning into a thick greasy sludge. After finding this mess, technicians contacted Enterprise to see if their records showed any oil changes, which they did not, though it's suspected at some point at least one change was done as the factory oil filter has been replaced. Of course, th…

So, I just finished hell week at school, (In case you're wondering, It is possible to get 7 hours of sleep over a 72 hour period and survive) and I am just a little bit bored today... I was looking at the GM logo, where I realized that it looks absolutely ancient. Research has showed me that the last time it was updated was in 1999 (I think) where they converted the original 1967 logo, glossed it over a bit, and slapped it on the letterhead. I think that with the volt coming out in 2010, and the vastly different corporate image GM is after, a new logo is necessary. I made these 2 earlier today. What do you think? Make some of your own too!
