Toyota Buys 5.9% Stake in Isuzu I'm thinking we're going to want to move Isuzu to the "Other Guys" section now... Toyota announced today that it will spend $373 million on a deal with Isuzu that will transfer 5.9% of the truck- and diesel-maker to the giant Japanese automaker. Toyota's goal in purchasing a stake in Isuzu is to bolster its diesel portfolio, which apparently lags behind other major automakers like cross-town rival Honda who announced in September it would have diesel-powered passenger cars for sale in the U.S. within three years. So, I needed to rent a car last min. and almost EVERYBODY in Fresno was sold out. So Hertz had cars (and have earned my future business) but... I ended up with 3 TOYOTA keys that all led me to a graphite gray Camary. It has a 4 banger in it. I CANNOT find a comfortable seating position in it at all. The seat is retarded and the steering wheel when it is pulled all the way out and put in the highest position is still not high enough or far enough out. At night, the whole center stack (including the green plastic surroundings) lights up and is very distracting. I can't ever get the car to go into gear without looking at the stupid jagged shifter. The car has really bad blin…

Just food for thought, this si not exactly very scientific but it does prove a point: why bother with B-pillars when push come to shove they're all pretty weak... I do not beleive a B-pillar saves lives more often than sheer luck does. http://www.crashanalysis.com/crash_test.htm

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=115799 It looks like they went out of their way to drive it as softly as possible, to maximize fuel economy and make Toyota look good (or at least, not as bad) for once again delivering a vehicle that gets no where near it's promised gas mileage. Who drives at 60 mph on the expressway? That's below the speed limit on most interstate highways. Here in Ohio, most people whizz by at 70, and people say this is a state full of slow drivers. If they were testing - say - GM's new hybrid the Saturn Vue Green Line, I'd bet you money they would floor the acceleration at each traffic light, and push it at 80+ on the expresswa…

General Motors and Toyota were once neck-and-neck when it came to developing high-mileage gasoline-electric hybrid cars. About a decade ago, you see, both firms had cracked the code on how to engineer a hybrid, and GM even had a running prototype. But the new technology was so costly that the automakers would have had to initially sell hybrids at a loss to build a market for them. The differing paths the two companies took symbolize why Toyota has become wildly profitable in the United States while GM has been losing its shirt in its home market. And why Toyota, riding GM's bumper, is likely to pass it this year to become the world's biggest car company. In addition to t…

But I was knocked into a curb and fell off my bike onto the sidewalk. And this was UW Ring Road, with a speed limit of 20km/h. He was more like going 50. Add 2 scratches + 2 blood injuries for me...

Toyota Motor Corporation announced today the Japanese launch of the Auris*¹, a strategic compact passenger vehicle for both Japan and Europe. In Japan, the Auris is available through “Netz” dealers nationwide, replacing the Allex and Corolla RunX. The new Toyota Auris will be revealed in Europe at the Bologna Motor Show on December 5 and will go on sale in the UK from February 2007 and across Europe in spring 2007. Auris will join Yaris and Avensis as a new core model designed and built in Europe … more Originally considered only for Canada, it may now be offered in the US as well, although Toyota Motor Sales has not yet confirmed either market. Note the Japanese-mar…

DETROIT - Detroit’s automakers went out with a whimper in 2007, as a lackluster December failed to pull the industry out of the lowest U.S. auto sales slump in nearly a decade. Ford Motor Co. was knocked from its perch as the No. 2 U.S. auto seller, a position it held since 1931, while General Motors appeared likely to lose its title of the largest automaker in the world. Both were dethroned by the juggernaut that is Toyota. Toyota Motor Corp. sold 2.62 million cars and trucks in the U.S. in 2007, which amounted to 48,226 more than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota’s sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products such as the Toyo…

So here I am with my girlfriend in Wichita, KS for the summer. In May I flew down here, on August 20th, we're gonna driver her car back to Massachusetts. Her car is a 1994 Geo Prism, 1.6, with a 5-speed manual and 164K miles on it. As we know, the Prism is a basically a Toyota Corolla, with a slightly different front and rear end, and different center stack. The body is in great shape, save for a dent in teh passenger fender and a missaligned bumper, but has no rust at all. Sounds like a good car right? WRONG First the timing belt needs to be replaced, second it slips out of 3rd, and won't even go into 4th. Sometimes it won't go into Reverse. We went to Cottman Transmis…

A new 2008 Camry Hybrid in Jasper Pearl with tan leather, look what he paid for it 33,500, 2K over sticker on a loaded Camry hybrid goes for 31K was this guy on crack who bought. People really would pay over sticker on an ugly boring midsizer? What kind of dumb-f*cker a-buys a Toyota and then pays more than its worth. Wasn't like it was a somewhat cool Land Cruiser or 4Runner but a Camry Hybrid give me a an f*cking break. Toyota buyers, figures. So what do you guys think? This makes me want to get a G8 GT for less and put a nasty Toyo hating and hybrid bashing bumper sticker on it... Something with the words V8 and "F*CK O…

I received a PM from a friend of mine on another forum whose family has a Toyota Tacoma (year 2005). After Rats ate his wiring twice due to Toyota coating their wires in tasty peanut oil, the Sheet metal on his truck has begun to completely disintegrate... To be fair to the guy, he's a GM/Ford truck guy and his family only bought it on the merits of the previous Toyota pickups they had had... So here's what has begun to happen to his "super duper" three year old truck (this truck has by far not been abused or even driven very hard either)...

Driving home from work today, I was passed by a late model Camry..painted medium metallic Subaru blue, with a big assed wing, STI stickers, a fart can exhaust, SUBARU decals on the windshield and sides, and a body kit. ...and yes it was a Camry, not the current WRX Amazing. One can only hope this was a movie stunt car for stand in duty for someone smart enough not to destroy a real WRX. Chris

Toyota's 4th-Quarter Profit Rises 39% on U.S. Sales May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest automaker by market value, said fourth-quarter profit climbed 39 percent to a record, buoyed by a stronger dollar and rising U.S. sales of Avalon sedans and Scion compact cars. Net income rose to 404 billion yen ($3.6 billion) in the three months ended March 31, compared with 291 billion yen a year earlier, Toyota said in a statement today. The company predicted profit of 1.31 trillion yen this fiscal year, down 4.1 percent from last year when it had a gain from the rising value of its stake in Japan's biggest bank. Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, 64…

Toyota's totally bizarre recall this is similar to some already posted topics, but the quotes in here were priceless.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/07/11/bad_recall/index.html example: (1) "The Tundras in question were built with an airbag shut-off switch but not the LATCH system. The solution? Spend lots of money and inconvenience customers...to remove the airbag shut-off switch. The move not only doesn't enhance the safety of these vehicles, it actually makes the vehicles unsafe for small children riding in the front seat. When I was little, I first got Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys and then Legos that I would play with for hours and build all these little cities. Then as I got older, I got K'Nex, Micro Machines (I had so many of the city sets that I could cover half of a room), and finally my favorite toy, Girder and Panel. I found my first Girder and Panel (known as KenStruct in the 70s) set at a garage sale...it's basically where you construct skyscrapers with these little plastic beams and columns and then you snap on these plastic panels for the walls and windows. The first set was from the mid 70s, and then one day at Toys R' Us I found out they had a new set and got that for a Ch…

Credit first must be given to ToniCipriani for his thread on a "Saturn Astra" trademark that GM has recently registered: http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...view=getnewpost I decided to do some snooping on the site he cited and this is what I found so far: -Nissan Motors has recently registered the names "G37", "FX37", and "M37" for its Infiniti brand. This pretty much is a confirmation of the rumor of the size of Nissan's new VQ (or VQ-derived) V6 engine. Now we just have to see if the 330hp claims are also true. -Toyota Motors last summer reigstered "LX520", "LX550", "LX570" and "LX600". Obviously, they're not going to use all of these but based on the new …

Since GMTruckGuy74 started spilling spoilers because he wanted to talk about the movie, and since those of us who have seen it are probably dying to talk about it, I made this thread so we can discuss it without ruining the movie for everyone who hasn't seen it yet. At least, that's the idea I'll start. Do you think we've seen the last of him? If history is any indication, I doubt it. There's really only one thing which can be said to accurately depict my reaction to this movie: With that out of the way, I really enjoyed this movie, and going by the audience applause and cheering at the end, so did a lot of other people. It's far better than the second movie and better than the first. There's a much better defined a plot, nods to the series, the main characters have actual depth now and there's some pretty emotional moments. The Deceptions can be genuinely scarey at times and the action scenes are incredible. It's not Hamlet, but totally worth seeing if you're a Transformers fan.

I got the idea from today's Autoblog post on the new Fiat Doblo Work Up. With all the love for a small, compact pickup here and elsewhere on the interwebs, would a vehicle like this -- a small commercial van-based truck -- work in the US? All right, so before I ask my question, I would like to point out that I am not "technically inclined" when it comes to cars. I know where vital fluids go and how to change them, but that is the extent of it. So, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to most things. I was thinking about this on my drive home from work. I drive a car with a column-mounted shifter. Where exactly is the gearbox? Is it in the same place as a car with a floor-mounted shifter? Or in a different place? How does the gearbox know to disengage park for instance in either form? I honestly want to know, and you know, become a little more educated about the car I drive. [/noob]

I was amazed at the amount of trash people just throw out their car windows... like it's the middle ages or something. A big potato chip bag with half the chips strewn everywhere, coffee and soda cups and bottles, an orange condom, (used, ew) etc. etc... what are people thinking? How can people be so damn TRASHY? I sincerely hope everyone here takes their trash home and sticks it in the wastebasket.

I'll road trip to the greater St Louis MO area 4 times in 2009; even so, the quick trip I took down there the weekend of March 14 was not long enough. It never is when you are meeting people and "catching up".... Friday the 13th, I went to work for a few hours, came home, picked up the rental (a Dodge Charger, of course), finished packing and left town about 2:10p. I made a beeline for St Louis (via RT 64 W, I-39 S, I-55 S and I-64 W), hoping to arrive for the ValveReplacement Reunion Friday night dinner. I stopped once, at a Shell station in Raymond IL just off I-55. I noticed a "Route 66" historical marker ... so, I suspect I was on Route 66 a bit. Unfortunately,…

I was wondering if any of you guys could give me advice on a camera tripod. The one I have is old and well, a piece of crap. It's held together with J-B Weld, lacks the features I want, but worst of all, can't hold the camera steady. So here's my criteria: Durable, but fairly lightweight Must be able to tilt the camera 90 degrees and be able to pan up and down...at the very least. Detachable release plate. $50 is the limit...I can go a little over but I'd prefer not too...on a budget. Now, I'm gonna have to take a trip to the camera store and play with some to see how the features work...because I don't know exactly how a 90 vertical platform works...for example.…

Father died at the beginning of the project, son was almost killed by the project....but yet every type of auto uses this THING they developed together. Trivia number two...I am thinking about a race car driver... Race car driver was an SCCA member...and the first race they ran was in a Ford Pinto...which was promptly sunk into an on course lake during the drivers first ever race. Driver towed the P{into home and actually used the oven to dry out the windshield wiper motor and a bunch of other parts...and then drove it to work the Monday after it was totally submerged. This driver was most noted for racing Mustangs....but also ran at the Indy 500. Driver qualified well, and won an award...but never won the race. Driver set a track record at Talledega in a NASCAR prep Thunderbird that to this day the Monte Carlo has n…

Well, it's not really so much trivia, I guess. I just want to see who can correctly guess what vintage my Fender Jaguar and amplifier are. And, no, I have no desire to be Johnny Greenwood.

Welcome to my "workhorses" thread. It's going to be a long one and won't all happen today. This is "Bumpy" my 79 GMC High Sierra 2500. I owned this truck longer than any other vehicle ever. It was always rough and rode the same way. It changed alot over the years - most of the sheetmetal you see went to the scrapyard long ago.

While I was out working today, Arkus pulled his Houdini act and got out of his crate. There was a terrible dogfight, and now I have two injured dogs. Zora really got the worst of it. Now I have to decide which one will be leaving, and figure out how the hell I'm going to make that happen. F'ing hell!

It's 100 percent real, nothing has been altered. Notice the cons? The disclaimer at the bottom (if you can see them)? I think this is as truthful as Toyota's gonna get. (And ImageShack can suck my ass. Thank ya, fellas, for taking down the image!)

Okay, a quick questions for my gurus.... To keep an eye on my computer, I'm running a few things. I've got AVG 8.5 (newest one) and Advanced system care ( since I've only have 160GB on the LT) Problem is, within the last week, when my ASC gets to security settings, it says I have hijacked settings, but it can't tell me witch ones might be malware, or just my settings. I don't plan on deleting anything yet, as I would like to not crash my computer... Any suggestions?

Yesterday in Bracciano, we were at some guy's apartment who is also a well-known chef in the area and since he works part time for Iowa State, he cooked us a seven course meal. While we were there, his wife had on their collection of 80s music, and one song came on that I know I used to hear on the radio when I was a little kid and want to try to find it, but I have no idea who it's by or what any of the lyrics even are. So I figured I'd give it a shot and see if anyone here knows what song I'm talking about. The singer sounds a lot like the guy from Depeche Mode or the Cure, but the song isn't by either of those two as far as I know. It's sort of a slower tempo song…

There's a movie I saw years ago that I just remembered again after recently having bought Demolition Man, but I have no idea what the name of it is. I'm pretty sure it came out in the 90s sometime, and it's in the vein of Demolition Man where a guy gets sent into the future to track somebody down. I think the movie takes place in a future New York (I remember one fight scene takes place in a futuristic highrise building that dwarfs the Empire State Building). The protagonist in the movie used to be a racing driver before he is sent into the future, and he meets up with his girlfriend from the past. It's not Demolition Man and I'm pretty sure it's not Fifth Element...d…

Well, after my Mom had her car obliterated in a head-on collision (can the "curse" affect you family too?) she will need a new vehicle. And not being in the financial position to buy a new vehicle we decided to go used. Mom wants a Tahoe, specifically a Black Tahoe. It will still be quite a while before my Mom will be able to drive but my Dad an I are looking anyway, and we have noticed that there are hardly any used Tahoes out there. The few that are just aren't appealing or in a color my Mom doesn't like. Now I suppose we could go the GMC route and get here a Yukon, but she is pretty much set on a Tahoe. So I guess fuel milage concerns aren't really affecting anyone aro…

Bought for $1500 in 1956, driven only 603 miles, then garaged for unknown reasons (with 9800 original miles), it has recently been sold (undisclosed amount). Mostly complete, it needs a complete re-do. Rust & mice are never mindful of history, unfortunately. Some sort of impact of unknown force poked out it's Cyclop's Eye. Hopefully & assumedly, it will be restored, as Tuckers have now cleared 7 digits in the collector arena. Neat to see a 'rumored' one re-debut.

Arizona's Immigration Mistake Wall Street Journal I have spent over 50 years in the law-enforcement profession in the Tucson community, the past 30 of which I have served as sheriff. I have seen relations between our community and law enforcement personnel shift with the times: sometimes challenged when the actions of a few police officers cross the line, and often improving when there is a sense of partnership. But in the past few weeks Arizona became a model for the rest of the country of what not to do. The immigration reform law that was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer on April 23 effectively requires that immigrants be able to prove their legal presence in the state of…

Water Seeps Into Vault Holding Buried Car KOTV - 6/13/2007 11:13 AM - Updated 6/13/2007 3:46 PM TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Workers unearthing the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere buried under the city's courthouse lawn were dealt an early setback Wednesday, as several feet of water were found in the concrete vault supposedly strong enough to withstand a nuclear attack. The two-door hardtop, buried in 1957 to celebrate Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood, is set to be lifted out of the 12-foot-by-20-foot time capsule Friday morning to commemorate the state's centennial year. As many as 50,000 people from all over the world are expected at the event, and more than 260 media credentials h…

This is a public service announcement. http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tund...ures-i-am-club/ By the time you reach this link, it may be dead. In some cases, I've had to go to the website directly and then nagivate down. There is another Tundra storm abrewing. And it's not looking good for Toyota. Is the liftgate really considered another door by Toyota? Should anyone be able to use their truck to haul ATVs? Could someone get hurt from this? As one of the owners experiencing this problem stated, we need to let everyone know.

Turbo Camaro?

I found a red, 1985 Camaro setting not to far from home yesterday. It's been slightly modified with a front fascia from a early '90s Camaro, which needs paint, and a hood from an IROC-Z, which needs the hinges fixed. Other than the two hiccups I pointed out (I'm not making much mention of the upholstery, which is only torn in one or two places, which I don't much care about, and the missing headliner, which you don't notice because of the t-tops), the car is very solid, is rust and ding free, and, except for the bumper, has great paint with plenty of sheen. Now, on the door handles I noticed a few interesting anomalies that read "Turbo." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, bu…

G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com Turbocharging, Stop Gap Step to Variable Supercharging? I have come across multiple stories lately about Variable Supercharging. Torotrak has the rather dry scripted but exciting video about Variable Supercharging that delivers big engine feel all the time with none of the traditional Turbo lag or the high pressure, premium fuel requirement of traditional Superchargers. The video does cover how this variable Supercharging compares to turbo's and regular Superchargers. With the push for fuel economy and downsizing of engines by taxation on the size of an engine, we have all seen our a…

Have you become a fan of a TV show AFTER its original run? Or, have you started watching a TV show after a few seasons have already been aired? For me ... in some cases, I've missed TV shows because I watch something else in that time slot. In others, it is because the show originally ran when I was "too young". Most-recently it is because I'm tired of giving shows a chance only for them to quickly disappear, like ABC's "Eli Stone". The newest "old" show I've started watching is former FOX staple "That '70s Show". I started watching because reruns are on late weeknights here in Chicagoland AND seeing Kurtwood Smith (Red Foreman on "That '70s Show") on CBS' new com…

I figured someone will eventually have an abbreviated term for this, much like DWI, etc. So I'll just go with TWD for now. Wow, how this one makes me shake my head at the completely pathetic drivers out there: "Texting driver doesn't notice police" The link: OH! You're pulling ME over! - Full story below: A young motorist had a simple answer when police asked why he didn't pull over earlier during a 28km pursuit. The 22-year-old said hadn't noticed the marked police cruiser following him because he was busy texting on his mobile phone, police say. Officers had first noticed the man when he shot past them on the Eastlink Freeway in southwest Melbourne at a s…

Almost a decade has passed since I officially joined Cheers and Gears in 2005. In that time, I've graduated from high school, quit work, started work, started college, and what seems like several dozen cars have been in my ownership. Despite the multitude of variables in my life right up until today, this website has strangely been one reliable constant. I've even contributed to this site beyond my mere musings with a small host of articles and opinion pieces that have managed to find their way onto the front page of the site. While Cheers and Gears has been a constant in my life, my activity 'round these here parts has been fairly -- hmmmmm -- quiet here lately, more va…

Posted: Thursday, August 6 2009 at 03:27 pm CT by Bob Sullivan The best way to get the attention of a classroom full of rowdy kids is to turn the lights off. And the best way to get the attention of Internet users is to essentially do the same thing. Thursday’s Twitter denial-of-service hack certainly grabbed everyone's attention. Nothing like a total shutdown to make people sit up and take notice. But relatively speaking, denialof-service attacks are harmless. Everyone's been through it - CNN, Yahoo, Microsoft. Heck, Facebook and LiveJournal were hit Thursday, too, by the social media bandwidth bandit. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.) …

I'm on the way to work today and one sees headlines on the paper, the MSN home page and all kinds of crap. And then you can't help but think: Aren't both Presidential tickets lacking? At the time we need good leadership the most, we have (1) a reasonably likable but 72 y.o. Arizona Republican who picks a woman who just had a baby within the last 6 months and whose (national and) international political savvy is thoroughly questionable, and (2) a well-educated but almost completely inexperienced Illinois Democrat who delivers all this unsubstantiated rhetoric and sounds like a Bible church preacher if you're listening to him from the other room. Out of 302 million p…

I have Windows XP. If the mouse doesn't move for a while, my computer goes to "notepad", mspaint", "calculator" and other places, by itself, then it clicks back to the screen I was viewing. What do I go into to stop that nonsense? Is that some sort of "demo" I can get rid of? Also, I have some movies on VHS that I don't want to throw away. Is there a machine that will record my VHS tapes onto DVD directly? I don't want to buy the machine, I just want to maybe rent it or take them somewhere and have them converted. Thanks for any help.
